Like this if OBS has ever imploded on you and ruined your life. EDIT: For anyone who's wondering why OBS is no longer saving any changes to their scenes, the reason is because you don't have write access to your C:\Program Files\ folder. This solution to this is to (A) run OBS in admin mode (thus giving you write access) or (B) moving OBS out of your C:\Program Files\ directory entirely. I highly advise that you do (B) and move OBS into a cloud storage solution like Google Drive or Dropbox.
Well, now i got this Error msg: "Failed to get text from remote : The requested URL returned error : 404 Not Found" and cant connect my Twitch account... already reinstalled everything
I have watched so many of your videos, they’ve all taught me something! The last video I watched I was thinking to myself how the hell do you keep coming up with content? Not only that but how was it still so relevant and helpful so many years and videos later?! Thank you Nutty, you’re amazing please never stop posting! 🥺🥰
To access quickly to the APPDATA folder, here's a fast shortcut with your keyboard: WIN+R to fire up RUN, then type " %APPDATA% " (without quotes) and press enter. In this way you will avoid confusion, because the folder is hided by default. Enjoy! P.S. Nutty is the NUTS!
holy shit the algorithm is inside my head because i have to reinstall OBS but have been waiting cause i really don't want to redo everything i've created over the last 2yrs. These steps (i hope) are going to help solve so many hours i was planning on spending on recreating stuff!!
Thanks dastardly Dave for sending this to me sassily, after I spent 9 hours rebuilding obs yesterday. At least I’ll never have to go through that again 😅
Mr Nutty Lord, I saw your video 6 days ago and immediately thought I should really do this like right now. That same day, my OBS crashed!!! THE SAME DAY... Took me a couple of days to bring it back to almost what it was. Honestly, please people do this!
Thank you so much! I am installing a new motherboard and CPU and needing to do a clean windows install. I was able to use your method and moved all my assets in to the OBS directory and am able to back everything up at once now. Hopefully I can just move my OBS to the new windows install and everything will work perfectly!
There's a nice little program called "Symlink Creator" that allows you to create junctions or symbolic links nice and easily. you can also store it on the cloud because it's essentially portable. A junction is exactly the same as creating shortcut, except the junction acts like it's not a shortcut, windows treats the junction shortcut like you created a new folder but the contents of that "new folder" (junction shortcut) is stored in a completely different folder. Windows will read a junction shortcut as having having memory but it won't take up space on the hard drive (if the source folder is on the cloud or on another hard drive). In essence, a junction is a folder that's content are stored else where.
The first time I was listening to you on the last three minutes of the video, I honestly did not understand it. But as I was just doing what you were teaching in the first part, it made sense to me. I never had to deal with the *missing* thing. Thanks for this tutorial. Now I won't have to worry about losing my OBS even if I switch PCs.
I was going to use the junctions feature, but my assets were so ridiculously unorganized, this provided a good opportunity for me to clean things up. Looking forward to this going much easier moving forward!
great video and very useful scripts, thank you. one thing to point out is that if "create-backup" script to be run as a scheduled task, then path to the portable obs folder needs to be specied in ":: Zip folders" section (to replace "*"). if not, it zips system32 folder instead :)
Hello nutty big fan.. i have seen alot of your videos these days and learnt alot from you.. I have lot of questions for you on this.. 1. If i make a backup by this method then it become portable so now can i uninstall obs from my pc? And run obs from that backup anywhere in my pc. And can i shift all this setting from one pc to another. Because thats the whole point of making it portable. 2. Streamer bot doesnt work properly when obs is in portabale mode, same with speaker bot. Both of these will reset after every restart of obs or pc. 3. Streamer bot and speaker bot should be placed inside asset folder or it can run from other drive like e:/ where i keep my softwares Please explain.. It will be very helpful.. Thanks alot in advance.
Couldn't you just backup your OBS-Studio folder and then replace it after If needed. ? Or in my case, let's say I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 11, then i would install OBS as normal, then delete that folder, then copy the backup folder and paste it in the same place as the deleted folder ?
@6:11 I removed the pause function, since I just want it to close when it's done. I've also setup a multifunction on my stream deck, first open the cleanup file, then wake 2 seconds, then run the backup file. Thanks for this.
Is there an easy way to get a list of all asset files and their current location? I would happily do the manual process of saving to the asset folder as a backup and then always use that folder moving forward
so i tried this too and got the same problem but i figured out what the problem was (for me at least) and hopefully it works for you all too. i created the file just like nutty, did not work - then i deleted the ".txt" so the file name is "obs_portable_mode" without the ".txt" and it works now - it just opened a blank OBS thingy and i am now continuing with the video (just thought because i was looking at comments for a solution earlier that i write this here) - hope it works! :)
Nutty i need a tutorial on how to un portable obs, i just did this portable tutorial to save my settings after a hardware issues. is theres a way to put it back on windows at it was in the past?
I switched over to obs portable mode and everything seemed to be working fine, until I changed a few things in my scenes. now whenever I close and reopen obs none of the changes I made are there. Changes appear to be saving to my old roaming folder instead of the new config folder. I have to go back to my roaming folder and copy over the obs-studio folder into the new config folder inside of obs portable every time I change something. is there a way to make obs save to the new config folder instead of the old roaming obs-studio folder??
So all this script seemed to do currently is copy my system32 and ruin my obs setup, didnt use anything but the default. Guess it did technicly backup something
So i made the config as instructed and then upgraded to OBS 30 and the config file is in there but OBS is loading as if its a brand new install and none of my settings are applying. I'm not sure what I did wrong.
Nutty! This was totally helpful I'm saving my settings when I switched over to my new PC build. HOWEVER, when you move the OBS folder, it throws off your Stream Deck plugins and they won't work anymore. I'm trying to follow Elgato's steps to remedy the situation, but it's not working. This might be disastrous 😭
@@spyco_tv were you able to fix yours? I ended up having to move the folder back to where it was in order for the stream deck to work, but then OBS started crashing in the middle of my streams. So, I uninstalled OBS completely, then reinstalled it and copied the folder with all my settings to where the new install of OBS had them. Thankfully, that worked. All of my stuff is working now and OBS hasn't crashed since.
When I create the text file, drop it into the obs-studio folder then run obs. OBS wont run and instead I get a pop up that says error could not create folder "config"
4:15 yeahhhh about that lol. Thankfully it was a fresh install anyways, so I just have to recreate the most basic of basic setup stuff. Every single time I would boot up OBS it would act as a new install. But damn why can't it be easier to just create a simple backup? Edit: So oddly enough I attempted to delete the obs folder, and move the backup zip to where the regular OBS folder was. At first I couldn't open it. So I attempted to reinstall it. Once it reinstalled it applied my settings back into the appdata folder and my settings are saved >.> I have no idea what has happened but I'll take it for now lol

Then I would remove the 'obs_portable_mode' blank folder out of the files and it would put the multi stream rtmp back, however, I would have a brand new OBS, everything else lost. Idk what to do besides wipe it all and start fresh

It's a shame there's nothing in the native UI for creating junctions/symlinks.
