Exploring an Unusually Large Abandoned Backsplit in Durham Region

  • I have passed by this house so many times and for a long while I could not tell it was abandoned..until one day it was obviously empty.
While there is not a lot of historical value in this house it was still very interesting to explore. First and foremost was the size! From the road it looks like just a small bungalow, but as soon as I was able to walk around, the place was bloody huge! It seemed that every hall had another hall to walk down or room to explore.
The smell of fuel oil was heavy throughout the whole house and when you watch you will see why. It appears this place was some sort of assisted living or halfway house. Based on some of the heavy duty HVAC and utility systems you can tell it was built up to a higher standard than a regular house.
Some odd features were the police tape everywhere and some closets with locks on the outside? umm were these punishment rooms or something? What ever this house was, there were many rules, rules were posted everywhere.
    One has to wonder...
I knew by the location it would eventually be vacant and I am pretty happy I kept my eye on the place..Another great explore under my belt.

Police don't tape off the inside of crime scenes , only outside. It was put there by someone who isn't a cop.

I've looked around on Google, and it says the facility shut down in 2012 due to lack of funds. Having worked in healthcare, and known people to work in halfway houses, etc, certain storage rooms HAVE to be locked. Med carts must be locked when not attended, and some facilities/states also require them to be in a locked room. Storage for all toiletries must be locked. There are people out there with mental issues where they try to drink soap or mouthwash, or eat toilet tissue etc. All staff areas must be closed off to residents. Linen closets usual require locking also. The posted rules about locking one half of the house and never leaving anyone alone is for the residents' safety. The chemical pink SWISH note tells us that someone goofed up and put a chemical in a bottle that previously had another chemical in it. That can cause all sorts of issues from the bottle exploding, to chemical burns to staff.

Sad since this was a place for people with Developmental issues.. Hopefully they were all able to relocate peacefully. Darn government cutting support.. ugh

    • @gerrycrisostomo6571
      @gerrycrisostomo6571 6 лет назад

Well maybe the reason why the government stopped supporting this facility is because way too many people were pretending to be retarded just so they can live in it. Man, this place is gorgeous! Wouldn't you do the same? HA HA HA HA!

Got this from google: "Community Living Oshawa/Clarington is an accredited, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the achievement of personal outcomes for people with developmental disabilities."
It looks like this place might have been a group home for adults with developmental disabilities. I haven't found anything about any crimes taking place in relation to the organization, so I can't explain that police tape...

  • @catbert26

It was a group home ran by Community Living. I did t work there, but I knew from the design and the layout. The house would have held and supported a few people. The police tape means that one of the residents died under suspicious circumstances and the result forced the company to close the home.

That was a very fun tour!! It was HUGE!!! Although it was an assisted care living facility, the inside and décor left behind, looked somewhat like a regular home, except for, as you said all the rules and regulations. Those locks on that one door looked pretty heavy duty....hate to think they locked anyone in there. And the police crime tape in several places regular makes you wonder?? Really enjoyed the tour and thanks for sharing!! :)

I didn't read what you wrote before starting to watch and as soon as I saw the furnace change list I knew it was some sort of care home. There is all kinds of equipment needed so closets with outside locks would be common to prevent misuse or abuse of the items. Our family is a four generation household of 10, most on the Autistic spectrum or having other special needs and disabilities,,, and boy would I love to have something like that. Multigenerational homes are starting to make a come back but they are completely out of our price range. It's amazing how more laws and costs are demanded by commandments every year , raising the cost of housing but they don't seem to prevent easy decay of the structures.. the best structures were still the oldest.. so much for building codes.

The heavy duty locks on the closet door(s) may account for locked medications for the residents (patients). My sister and 1 of my aunts are nurses and work for an assisted living home, I showed them this video and they both told me that in a lot of the assisted living facilities they keep heavy medications for certain patients thus locking the closet(s) up so others cannot get to them. As for the Police tape?? Hmm, I have to say I nor my aunt or sister could account for that unless there was abuse going on there and they were investigated for said abuse. Thanks for another great adventure daadeeoh (: Always great fun to be on board with you on you're travels (: I look forward to more adventures with you (:

At 2:47 I could hear something dribbling. I am babysitting a friends rather nervous Boxer and I thought it was him peeing on something. Thank god it was the vid. Still furnace oil left in the tank! 3 water heaters if I counted right?! Were those propane tanks at 5:09? Locks on a closet from the outside.? That's scary! Makes my imagination run a bit wild. This is still a very desirable house! It's beautiful, bright and big. Thanks Daadeeoh for another excellent adventure!

This makes me mad & sad, as where I come from we used to have some beautiful homes built specifically for people with both physical & mental issues, but due to funding the council shut them down & shoved them anywhere they could!! They suddenly went from having staff there if they needed them & having friends around to being stuck in a high rise or on an estate where they had to manage for themselves & most felt isolated. I hope the folks from here fared better. But another great video!!

What an interesting place, you should seriously consider calling the oil company and make anonymous tip about the oil leak, if that oil gets into the ground water it could be very serious.
It looks like somebody recently spent a bunch of money on that place within the last few years the furnaces are not that old and the water purification systems are not that old either.
I know I say this a lot but if there's one place that's worth being saved it's probably that one, as long as the septic system is OK and up to code and the wells are still ok.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a Dateline show about this place. They were taking in senior citizens for their Social Security checks, and neglecting them. You put your camera over the filing cabinet, I paused it to see what it said, the words community living caught my eye so I can tell you that this rather large home was a home for the disabled. Who needed to be cared for 24/7 and the house was staffed. Which makes sense as to size and all the high tech stuff in there. I used to work for a community living at one time over a decade ago. This info should help you to narrow down any research you may want to search for on the home.

The owner must have fed the birds as the dove saw someone home and hoped for seed.

closets with locks on the outside, were these punishment rooms? no, just to keep other residents from helping themselves to other people's belongings

12:33 that is similar to what i have to do at my job and i take care of individuals with developmental disabilities. you have to document everything. the police tape was probably because a lot of abuse and neglect may have happened there. it is known many places like this shut down because of it. But that's only my guess.

As far as the crime scene tape goes, it would have to been a brutal crime for that to be there.

it was a very nice place. hallways with hallways, always cool, as well as the multiple stairs. makes me wonder why there would be police tape everywhere. really great find.
