    The "real" reason why guys like this want you to have locking caps is so you have to call them to service the unit. Don't go along! It's your equipment and you have a right to know what is installed on your unit. Many of these guys install them without your knowledge....totally deceptive! Stay away from any company that does this.

    These locking caps are the most ridiculous waste of metal. I would have to disagree on putting them on. Torque down a normal brass cap. What’s next motor oil locking caps because we are afraid the kids will drink motor oil. I Live in Phoenix Az and all these new build houses they can’t even get duct work right.... but they do put these locking caps on lol.
    You make good videos but I will have to disagree using these

      yea seems like electrifying your unit from underneath with 240v ac would have been cheaper and definitely more useful, because tap valves, are readily available and anyone can use them, now your locking caps are useless. your welcome. btw, those tap valves literally cost 1/10 usually of what you paid for those caps.

    Thank you. Sears installed my system in 2014. I no longer use Sears for proving service and repair. The lock system they used is not used by other technicians and obtaining the proper key to unlock the service site is a headache.

    If a drug users wants to huff refrigerant, they could easily drill hole or just pop a hole in the line. Also, locking cap tools are sold for $15 on Amazon. Additionally, there are videos showing how to use use a sheet metal screw to remove these caps WITHOUT damaging them. Techs are charging $190 for a set of 2 caps which again, cost $15-26 on Amazon. Personally, I disagree that this is effective or needed. Feel free to come to your own conclusions and disagree though.

    I think there is just one good reason to have locking caps and that is prevention of mischief or malicious tampering. The homeowner might feel that is something to worry about, and if you have kids around then yes it is. Kids will mess with stuff, and they don't have to be motivated by wanting to inhale it for a high to mess with the valve and let refrigerant out. I've seen it happen. I don't agree that un-elected bureaucrats imposing it as law is a good reason to have them, and service techs charging customers huge markups to install them on every system on the pretext of being required by law is just typical racketeering.
    Then at the end of the video he preaches about a roof mounted system not being safe from motivated thieves, and cites a case where a rooftop system is stripped of its copper by a thief who chopped it out with cutting tools, with witnesses saying they heard the refrigerant violently escape, and then shows other videos of thieves making off with entire condensing units. What will locking caps do to help prevent this situation? Nothing. The thieves have no concern for the service port valves, they just chop the copper lines with cutting tools in a hurry. Why is this guy pivoting to the topic of thieves with cutting tools chopping the lines with no concern for refrigerant loss in a video about locking caps? In the description text of the video it says: "Locking safety caps can prevent ac theft ..." No they don't, and the video even shows clear evidence that locking caps don't prevent ac theft. In order to prevent theft of the entire system the homeowner will have to build a steel burglar bar cage around the entire condensing unit. And if the cage is well made so that hands cannot reach thru the bars to the service ports, then locking caps will be totally unnecessary in that case.

    If the real reason for the safety cups is to protect Kids and unauthorized access to the service ports why do we have different keys for different refrigerants? We have to buy one removal tool for R-22 and a different one for R-410A. Sounds someone is trying to make money out of me.

    Good video, informative. Other than this being code, it seems like your fairly passionate about this subject. That's all well and good, but other than for liability and I am not sure who would be liable the homeowner or the HVAC company that services your ac system, wouldn't this be kind of like putting a lock on a chain link fence... Growing up I found supporting and protecting just the people you love to be an arduous task in itself. After a long life I have found that, regardless of how they got there, people make decisions based on the situation they are in, good or bad, and that lives may be lost, It's sad, shit happens and in the end life, goes on... Thank You for the information...

    I'm an AC Tech and I think it's just another marketing gimmick. You can get access valves very easy, it's just another way of making more money. Just like the automotive industry, locking you out fixing your own equipment. Phones that you buy that you cannot change the battery anymore, gluing your phone together. You think why didn't they think of this stuff in the past. We're in some different times.

  • @stephenwalker928
    @stephenwalker928 3 года назад

    I know this video is old, but im going to point out that tap valves are readily available at any HVAC or Plumbing Supplier, They Clamp on and those caps you charge for to put on, are defeated... 350 dollars for 50 caps.. that's insane.. they are caps. It would be cheaper to electrify the unit so when they touch it, they get shocked and make those supply wires come from under the unit through the ground.. so they are harder to find and make it 240 Volts so it really messes them up... if you smell rotting from your roof or girlish scream, then you know you have successfully stopped refrigerant theft. Its probably comparable in cost, but will definitely make someone think twice, and is sure way to prevent the theft. You can even spend a little extra money and make it three phase 480.. it wont be girlish screams you hear tho.. I hate thieves.. and i really hate drug addicts.. at least those that steal to get their fix.
