- A brief overview about cosmetics by a funeral director. Brands, types, etc.
A little hiccup in the video but one of the file had some issues.
Check out the video on airbrush cosmetics by Matt Smith:

• Airbrush: Getting rid ...
When Mom died I dressed her, fixed her hair, put on her makeup and jewelry. She looked exactly the way she looked in life. And the additional time I was able to spend with her, gave me valuable comfort. The information you provide is great for family or friends who are tasked with making final arrangements !🙏🏻❤️
That is lovely. A little more quality time that I'm sure she would have appreciated.
I've attended viewings where the deceased looked more lifelike than when the person was alive!
All of the things that you had to be trained and educated on you all should be paid well because you all deserve it.
AMEN TO THAT! There is SO much involved in getting someone ready for viewing.
As a makeup artist myself this is really interesting to watch
I was not sure but so glad I was able to do my Mother's final "makeunder".
The "tint" our funeral home used, (they appropriately called GLOW TINT!), was horrendous! I had to remove it before I could apply makeup on her.
We got more compliments on how natural she looked & not "made up" like many are.
I was honored to have been asked to do another close family friend when she passed. Happy her family & loved ones were also pleased with the natural look.
Thank you for what you do. You seem MUCH MORE caring than those I've dealt with. 💜
This is such an important job. Families appreciate when their loved one looks appropriate. Kudos to you for your hard work.
Thank you!
You are a blessing to the general public and to people who are interested in mortuary science as a profession.please keep the videos coming ,I have a question why can’t regular makeup be used on the deceased?.
I learned in makeup artistry class that mortuary makeup is non-thermogenic. It doesn't react to warmth and blends easily on cold surfaces like skin of decedents.
You can use regular makeup i know cause when my mom passed i asked. But you cant use makeup for the dead on the liveing because dome of it can burn
Most of the makeup designed for the deceased is made to adhere to cold flesh. This is not necessarily the the case for makeup made for the living. In addition to this, some of the makeup contains formaldehyde and can burn the skin of live people is another reason why this type of makeup is specifically designed for the decedents.
Excellent presentation. In restorative arts we learned to make very good use of cosmetic products. You're right some embalmers have incredible skills and training in the art of using cosmetics to make the cases look as natural as possible.
Thanks for watching!
@@KaritheMortician You are very welcome! I always enjoy your videos! As a former practitioner of mortuary science, I know you know what you're talking about!
This has to be my favorite week on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time out to share with us. Please keep up the great videos!
Me and my cousin were allowed to do our grandmas hair and a little makeup for her viewing. My cousin and I are very, very close. More like sisters. Both of us were very close with our grandma all throughout our lives and even as young adults. I was 20 when our grandma passed and it absolutely devastated me. I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with my son and all I had prayed for throughout my pregnancy was for my grandma to live long enough to see her first great grandson born. She passed shortly before Christmas just days before he was born. It sounds so weird to say but, when I was able to do those last things for her like I had always done since she had become very ill, it seemed to comfort me and give me somewhat of a closure. I knew just how she liked her beautiful snow white hair fixed and just her blush and on special occasions, a little bit of lipstick. I fixed her just the way she always liked and gave her a few more kisses on the cheek just the same as I had done every day all through my 20 years with her. I miss her dearly every day and not a day passes that I don’t think of her ❤️
Kari Northey .. it really was! I will always be thankful that I was able to do that for her. It made a world of difference for me and gave me a sense of peace in the wake of her passing. Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my comment. It helps me a lot to talk about her and share memories with others. The grief process for me seems to be never ending. I lost my dad when I was very young. I feel like I’ve not been the same since. So when my grandmother passed, it really felt like I was losing everything and everyone that I loved. Thankfully, I still have my mom and quite a bit of immediate family. Since I started watching your videos, I have been able to look at death very differently and it really got me thinking about how I want things to be when my times comes. I am still very young but, tomorrow is never promised. I checked in with my mom about life insurance to make sure that my family wouldn’t be left with the burden of any final expenses. My mom has had the policy ever since I was a toddler but, it never really mattered to me how much it was for or anything like that. I never even gave death/funeral/burial a thought. I feel kinda content and relieved knowing that I have a pretty hefty life insurance policy and my family will not have to pay out of their pocket for all of my services and things like that. My mom did not even want to listen or hear me tell her what I wanted and what my wishes are when my times comes. But, I feel better now knowing that there won’t be any confusion or questions that I won’t be there to answer when that day does come for me. Without you and your advice, I wouldn’t have ever been able to sit down with my family and have a conversation about something as touchy as my own funeral. So thanks so much, Kari!
We’ve been spoiled this week with new videos everyday! 😍😍😍
I never thought this would be a video I would have to look up. But today I have to do my sisters makeup for her funeral. Thank you for this video.😞😥
I second that. I do my mother’s tomorrow. This helps
Me too my sis today
I do my mom's tomorrow. Love and peace to y'all. 💙
I'm doing my aunt's makeup next week. Y'all pray for me.❤
Sending love to you Amy, Angee, PButta, Lupita, Sherrian...so strong. Sending hugs to you all, as you continue adjusting to life without your loved ones on the flesh. They are always with you. 💫✨💫✨🙏🏽
You do a awesome job explaining topics.
I had no idea how many areas you had to be talented in to be a funeral director.
Kari Northey you have the most beautiful complexion.
Bella Katherman yes she does!! Ever since I first started watching her that is the first thing that stuck out to me. Her complexion and how beautiful her skin is! The red nail polish really makes her skin complexion pop. Since it’s such a bright contrast. So pretty!
Very interesting indeed. Learned a lot here. Lol now if I could only learn why my 15 year old daughter has the entire bathroom sink covered with her cosmetics!!
Paul Thomas a girl needs options 😉😉. Between myself and my 2 teenage daughters, we could stock a store!
How do you do reconstruction of facial features or cover up gun shot wounds?
wax
I absolutely love you! Not sure how I stumbled across your channel, but I'm so glad I did! I've always been facinated with death, and the process of preserving the body! You are definitely an asset to your community! Thank You for all you do. Much love and respect!!
Thank you so much!
@@KaritheMortician no, THANK YOU!!
This video seems edited strangely.
Kari Northey the intro shows twice, you looked in cosmetic box... like your formulating your words, you sniff your nose...which doesn't seem like the normal well put together Kari. Maybe watch the video at least the first 3rd of the video.
Rebekah Bridges-Tervydis I noticed that too but quickly remembered Kari is a human and does everything you do. Who cares if she sniffles?
Oh no! The world is ending. 😭😭😭
Kari keeping it real.... how boring is a "perfect" vlog...very --good job Kari...
Kari Northey lol, well that's me! Pointing out flaws and criticisms. Sorry, Kari. I just thought you'd want to know.
Hi Kathy! Have you ever done the cosmetics for a black person? If so how was it different from doing that of a white person?
Very interesting, thank you, Kari for explaining the different processes used in creating a natural look for viewing.
I’ve been to quite a few funerals unfortunately and they all looked too orange or tan. Do you know why that is?
The lighting or the cosmetics are not being used correctly
What was the name of that make up line that that kit came in and is there a website or a link
I have often wondered why you don't use more of the red coloring in the embalming fluid to give the decedent more color
Kari Northey I understand that, but it could help. Thank you for your reply and your informative videos.
I have a question, how come people in the caskets, their skin looks shiny and clay like, I understand you won't look EXACTLY like you did, but their skin looks "fake" like a wax figure.
I’ve observed this a lot and I think it’s because life has gone which gives this effect, especially unembalmed decedents tend to look this way. There’s no blood flowing, the corpse is dehydrated, there’s nothing going on within which we are so used to seeing in a living person, death is a whole different look.
They use wax skin and wax lips if needed to mold
Do you use the same brushes and makeup on each person without cleaning or the same makeup on each or do you use it at one time per person?? Always have been curious about that... I know when my dad passed I kept rubbing his forward and I would even kiss his forward.. What I'm trying to say is is it not wise to do that? My 19 year old son was in an auto accident in Germany 32 years ago, his head was crushed on one side, Dover fixed I'm up with wax, I didn't notice for I was still in disbelief of his death. The military in Dover Del. did his... I wanted to touch him all during the viewing..
The makeup on him was very good as was my fathers.
Thanks for taking care of our families!
I notice that people who have wrinkles in life have a completely wrinkle free face after the funeral home work. How do you do that ?
could air brush foundation be used in this process intead of brush to give the rosy look/make up etc?
Hello. I’m a cosmetologist in Florida and Iv always been interested in working on the dead but I have no idea how to even begin to look into that. Do I need to be an embalmer to be able to do hair and makeup? I have so many questions I don’t know where to research this. Thanks!
Abe Olivares I do makeup for a funeral home and didn't go to school for it.. kind of fell into by doing a family member requested by the parent and did a good job and that's how I got started
Georgia Baines what kind of makeup do you use?

Heyy!! Im from florida too!!! Lol
Im here in fl from here and raised here
I did my best friend's makeup and hair for her viewing and my grandmother's makeup and hair for hers. The mortuary makeup was used on my grandmother for the foundation, the rest of it was my makeup and hers. For my best friend, I used virtually all of her own makeup. I suppose every situation would be different.
Question how much does a dodge make up set like this one cost?
😄👌 _" A good mortician can make you look 10 years younger "_ ~ Jessica Mitford
Very! true! When my mom passed she looked 20 years younger we couldn't believe it till this day she looked Goregous! She was 80 years old looke like 60 when they did my mom
Kari, I have been to some funerals where the lighting in the room is dim and there appears to be like a veil over the body in the open casket. Does that have anything to do with cosmetic purposes?
How do you feel about family dressing and doing the final makeup on their deceased.
Hello! I work as a mortuary cosmetologist and I think it is great when families request to dress and also do makeup for their loved one. The only problem I tend to see is that families aren't prepared to see their loved one dead. Depending if they asked for embalming or any sort of prep work its definitely terrifying for them to see the eye caps and mouth closure if they asked for that. And also even if the death was peaceful and at home, death can definitely take its toll on the physical form and seeing that and not knowing what to expect can really upset a family. I mean, there is such a hidden culture of death and most families just assume that they are going to look the exact same and when they saw them alive and that their eyes and mouth will be naturally closed like it is in the "movies". I think at home funerals and families taking care of their loved one is fantastic but they need to be open minded and comfortable with the fact that the person they love might not look completely the same.
When my cousin in law passed in 2001, her daughter did her make up. I've seen some cadavers who were made up, that looked very natural, and some who, well didn't look like they did while living. I was going to ask about restorations, but I think you answered my question. Thank you....PS: you have nice hands.
"Um. For a lack for a lack or a better term. Dead so they don't look so dead!" That made me chuckle. Lol. I enjoy the info you share and your awesome personality you present it with. Thanks for making this subject not so scary. Ps. Have you ever thought of doing a blooper reel. I bet it would be hilarious.
:)
Where to buy ? That product
Any mortuary supply company
Thank you Kari for another interesting video on the funeral industry. Always look forward to seeing your videos. One question though, the tint you use is it topical or used as part of embalming fluid?
Hi there. My grandmother passes away on Thursday 11/1 her viewing is on Sunday. My aunt and i have decided that we want to do her makeup. Is there anything i should be aware of. Will she look blue. Will she look unrecognizable, too pale, any tips would really help me. Any primer we should use is it sanitary to wash our makeup brushes and reuse them or get rid of them. Please any advise would really help. Thank you
Is that theatrical makeup?
what would you suggest to the family that won't agree with make up but the decease apperance would benefit from?
Im a makeup artist. And i will love to work a a murtuary makeup. Can you give me some ideas to start
It depends on the laws in your state if it would be allowed or not
What kind of tint should one use for dark skinned African Americans to prevent the caking or talc like appearance?
Is it wise for a person to use the same make-up, eyeshadow, etc. on making up the deceased and use the same brushes and so forth on making up a bride or beauty pageant girls????
You should not
You use cream make up on dead skin?? I only use tint and powder and my effect is beautiful.
Yes cream to cover heavier imperfections.
Love your nails! You are so gentle it’s awesome
R B she is very kind and gentle
Do you have to sterilize all the equipment like at a hospital or do you just give it a hot soap wash? I am interested because I know the medical field anything touching a body or floor they have to discard or disinfect the item. But I wouldn’t think dead bodies can catch germs.
When my Aunty passed away from suicide she wasn't found for a day or two but they decided on closed coffin due to discolouration of her face. We always wondered what they meant. She had a lace edged hanky over her face. We always wondering what the problem was. Do you think the blood had settled to her face?
After talking to a few UK funeral directors about the industry etc they all say the same. Unfortunately they seem to think because it was December and very close to Christmas (21st) they wouldn't of wanted to put the work in 😢 very hard to accept someone has gone when you can't see there face and process it. She was found on her birthday. At least we got to put her birthday cards etc in with her.
how would you know which color or tone to use on a dark skin decease compare with a brownish skin color, and could we use a picture of the decease when alive with make up?
What would you say is the key to doing a good job on the make up and helping the body look life like?
I have seen some bodies and they look like they can sit up and talk to you. Our favorite funeral home does such a good job but one local funeral home looks like they just threw a bunch of powder and foundation at the body from across the room.
Also, how do you get the makeup out of the casket lining?
This same poor quality funeral home usually gets the makeup on the casket lining as well.
Do you need to have mortuary cosmetics
I've been to some funeral homes that have pink and blue lights above the person in the casket how does that help the person in the casket with the makeup. How do the funeral directors know when the pink and blue lights are set at the right brightness level?
I am going to be 60 years old and when I was 10 years old I wanted to be a Funeral Director, and I would like to know if I can still work in a Funeral home, but I never made it to College to be come a Funeral Director and I wanted to Owen my Owen funeral home.
Yes you can
If you go to different F/Hs, do you bring your own makeup and chemicals? I assume different F/Hs use their own mixture of chemicals and brands of makeup.
do you place the "softtouch liquid first before the make up, and how long would you wait to apply the cosmetic?
So Kari, are you saying that if one person applied cosmetics to a dead body, and then the face was washed clean and pale again, and another person came in and did the cosmetics again, that the dead body would look totally different because of the different colors of makeup that were used? I never thought of that?
Also, hoe does a funeral home charge for embalming? Is it a flat charge for everybody, or does it vary per deceased based on the amount of work and restoration that may be necessary, and the time it takes? Thanks.
Do you normally shine a decedents shoes? Esp if the deceased is a male?
Hi there I really enjoyed you sharing this info.
Q: where did you purchase the little tubs? I'm a makeup artist and would love to transfer my liquid foundations into something like this.
how do you apply the lip color do you use a cutetip, or finger with gloves on, or how do you apply it?
What about the makeup that looks matted and dried out? And is fake eyelashes a norm for females?
Down here in South Carolina I see that morticians but tissue or paper towel over the deceased’s face when they are about to close the casket. Why is that? Also do you fear that when you put make up on the body and close the casket, that the makeup might get on the head panel.
What type of training does someone need to apply makeup on the dead?
I really enjoyed this video Kari, so interesting!!!
What are the salaries for a makeup artist in a funeral home?
What brand of makeup is this?
Dodge most of it
currently enrolling in st Petersburg College in Florida for A.A.S. Major in Funeral Service... any videos of yours or ones that have interested you would be great :) thank you!
I have always wondered if someone comes in and they have had eyelash or nail extensions for example and one of the above is missing a nail or a lash extension how is that corrected? Also if someone has very light hair like platinum blonde and the roots are coming in quite a bit how is that corrected as well so they look like their light blonde self?
You can have somebody come in and take care of those things. Most funeral homes contract out for things like that.
Kim Sims Apologies for not seeing the reply sooner but thank you so much for answering my question!
@karinorthey I have been told by several friends that they were allowed to do the hair and makeup for their loved ones? Do you see that a lot and is it allowed after you've used all of those chemicals to embalm?
Not as many people ask this as you would think and yes there are not restrictions.
A little diddy about Kari's cosmetic hhhaaannnddd. Final for Friday, nicely done! I do have a question, does the jaundice color disappear or fade after embalming?
What brand did you use?
Hi Kari, I love your videos and I have a quick question: What happens in a situation where there is a viewing and the family is not happy with the hair and makeup of the deceased? Does the funeral home get to do a "re-do" or do they offer an explanation? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us.
The family views the body first,, usually a day before the funeral to make changes
Can yourself finish powder on the make up
Is that makeup only sold to people with a licence to work with the deasceased? Idk why would anyone wanted it, I'm just curious.
is eyelashed necessary??~...
Thank you so much with the way you explain everything in detail .
You are welcome
Can a family member do a loved ones makeup and hair if they choose to do so?
@@KaritheMortician thanks so much ❤
What if a family insists that their male loved one not have his beard/goatee shaved? Will that be an issue for the mortician?
Kari Northey but what if they don’t want the face to be shaved because that’s how they looked when alive?
My late Aunt Noëlla literally wrote the book on mortuary cosmetics and haircare, and coined the term Desairology for it. :)
that is awesome! I would love to learn more about her. Please email me kari@Karithemortician.com
@@KaritheMortician I can email you, I'm traveling atm but when I'm settled in my next destination I'll get in touch.
I really appreciated this video, I'm a cosmetologist that services clients who have asked me about doing their final look when that time comes. An its been a taboo subject to discuss has been my experience when trying to ask my own peers. So RUclips bound I became. Your professionalism an humbleness are just amazing. To me I view it as an honor to do my clients last look, the last time their families will see them, that is an honor. Thank you for helping me on my journey.
7:00 Was that a hair in the foundation pot!?
What, are you afraid of cross-contamination or something?? 😂
Yes now that I think of it Why does funeral home ask you to leave the room when they are closing the casket? I was hoping to stay and watch what they did when my dad passed. Perhaps you can let us know I didn’t have the nerve to say no I would
Like to stay and see this
James O'Leary where I live we stay, I covered my daughter with the little blanket that’s over the bottom half of the coffin. They lower the bed with a crank type thing, and close the lid. It’s really sad.
Shy Ann thank you I’m sorry for your loss I thought it was something like that
I am my funeral director to please let me leave before the closing of the casket for my mother and son. I felt like I couldn't stand seeing them closed in that last time. My mom had my dad open during the furnal and when they closed that casket at the end of the funeral I a most passed out
debbie allen I’m so sorry for your loss God Bless you sincere condolences.
Tx for reply, I hadn’t thought of that aspect for some reason Totally understandable
Thanks for your reply
Sometimes they need to discreetly slip off wedding rings the family wants to keep.
Wow you are even a makeup artist. There is a lot of work you do . Amazing but cool making them look perfect and I would want to look my best.
How do you dress a body, what if the dress or pants are too small?
There are a range of purpose made shrouds and gowns for both male and female deceased, including burial slippers in some cases.
Wonderful video!! Very much enjoyed learning about the makeup procedure.
What's the name of the kit
Did you mean "ditty"?
How would you go about doing somebody's makeup that has visible tatoos? (i.e. hands, neck, or facial - something that would show during a viewing)
Love your videos!
Have you ever worked on a celebrity? If so what was your experience
Having watched a few make up artists doing bad things, this is impressive. Also, I keep watching these videos, so I did subscribe. I was watching her with the makeup, thinking, don't put that on your hand!
thanks

Wonderful series. Thank you. You're presentation skills and no-nonsense manner add to the quality. (Was this "ditty"?)
What about the colors of makeup for people of color? Do you guys shave the peach fuzz from female bodies ?
The cosmetics come in all shades! Yes many people do because it cosmetizes more smoothly.
These colors are really lovely....... how intresting this was....
This is very informative, thank you!
Kari I've watched this video before but sometimes I watch them again but your hair in this video looks so good on you I know its weird but it really compliments you I just thought I'd say that lol 😆
Oh thank you!
Kari is so pretty!!!🌹🌹🌹🌹
Aww thank you!
Hey Kari great video as usual, when my Father in law passed he had been in the hospital for a while and was not up to shaving, I offered but he just felt unwell so by the time he was to get prepared I had to threaten to take matters into my own hands and say I will shave him myself as they seemed reluctant to want to do it!?... am I missing something is there a problem shaving a corpse?
Very interesting video, I have wanted to work in a funeral home for many years and find it quite difficult to get into, I did not realise just how much goes on in the process of embalming etc. however, I am not put off but as I am getting older I may find it even more difficult for someone to take me on without any experience and try to gain training on the job, I am in Scotland which could be a lot different to you guys overseas but wondered if you have any tips on how to go about applying for work without the knowledge? Thank you for sharing these videos! :)
Thank you Kari!
My mother was airbrushed and she looked really good. I showed you her photo on Facebook.
Do you wash brushes or makeup applicators after each body? When people are alive you should wash after each person, its so interesting but because they are deceased what is routine?
Goodness, why would they need to be washed for a dead person.
Laura Johnson maybe because all dead people are different colors?
Jennifer Garcia could be . I was thinking about germs.
I love your videos! Keep them coming !!💕💕💕
