- Another low-cost / high-profit fence picket item to add to your collection! Everyone loves birdhouses. Especially purple martin boxes... There's just something nostalgic to a handmade wooden martin box. And you simply can't find them anymore... they have been replaced with cheap plastic ones.
In this video, I will show you how to make this large martin box using only 4 fence pickets. Now that's what I call a home-run for any woodworking business or side hustle.

I make furniture and stuff out of old reclaimed wood although I do alright with it as a hobby. I've recently started making birdhouse and birdfeeders and they've been selling like hotcakes!
Everytime I go and sell, I sell out pretty quick!
There are so many designs a person can do.
Where I live, bluebird houses are very popular. And they sell quick!
Thanks for sharing 👍
Yes! They sell like crazy! People love to watch birds. And the martins are great for bug control!
Where do you put them for sale?
Where do you put them for sale?
That’s amazing. Where do these birds get the money to buy a house? And how to they carry the cash while flying to buy a house? These are some smart birds you got over there!
Using their fly buy reward points.…..
I am a professional woodworker, but you are showing me stuff I haven't noticed before!
New to the channel and a whole lot of great projects. I saw the $8 martin box and clicked on it, then saw it was 1yr ago. So it's probably safe to say that it's now an $80 martin box
$8 in materials but he doesn’t account for the $20 in pocket hole screws.
I am enjoying your series very much and have made four planters so far for my wife. showed her the bird house video and have now started building one for her. I do not make these for profit, I simply make them for the pleasure I get I get making them for my wife.
I read many of the comment's people leave, which are mostly good except the people who are confused and think they need a nice workshop and a bunch of high end tools like yours to complete these projects. I do not have a big shop and a bunch of high end tools. Work with what you have and if you sell projects, take the profits and buy Quality tools that will make you more profit. continue building your business and your skill level.
Thanks Matthew
Hello Matthew
I want to say Thank You, I took on this project , I made it my own style and put a base that assembles and disassembles in seconds and every time i make 1 it sells like HotCakes. This video has been a big part of gaining confidence to make stuff that ppl will actually be happy to give me $$$ for, which has also made me a better Father in being able to provide for my family. So from the bottom of my heart Thank You Sir 👍
Thank you for sharing your experience. Can you tell us how much you sell your bird houses for?
@freewillchoice8052 i sell my houses for 80$ and the stand it comes on for 30$. When I started making them the most common question I had was how do I mount it. So I made a stand that it can slide on and off . It solved the problem of how to mount it and made a way for me to upscale.
@@kingbunny5306 thanks for replying. I was also wondering how long does it take you to make one bird house with a stand?
@freewillchoice8052 I usually make 3 at a time, if I'm organized, keep it basic and don't have to search for tools or material I can do 3 in 2 work days. If I'm making a fancy house which means I'll burn the wood then scrape it down and then stain it then it usually is 3 houses in 3 days. I find burning and scraping the wood takes the house to another level and I've been able to sell those for 200$ with stand. I find with the stand it takes it from a birdhouse to a piece of backyard furniture 😃
@@kingbunny5306 that’s awesome! 👏 👍 I’d love to see your work. 200 bucks for a bird house and stand is pretty good in my opinion.
You have the best practical woodworking videos on RUclips these days. Please stay true to this style and resist the apparent maker's draw to CNC, Laser Cutters, and other ridiculous automation. This fills a void that is left by many others who have moved on to bigger, more expensive shops and tooling. Thanks!
Hey! Thank you and I have no plans for that. I actually have several machines in my shop that I never use for my videos. You can't teach someone by using machines that they don't have access to.
I made 2 of the planter boxes from one of your previous videos & they were both bought today. My first sales Ever! And I have 10 more to make that are already spoken for haha
It's all thanks to you, brother!
Lol. Thanks Jeff. I do love me some Bob Ross.
WOW! that's awesome! I've been thinking of making the planters, but where do you put them up for sale, if you don't mind sharing? thanks!
In case nobody tells you today, you're amazing! Thank you for sharing all of these plans AND for being even more phenomenal and breaking all of it down so perfectly! You're an extraordinary human being!
This could also be slightly altered to make a toy stable. My daughter would have loved that when she was little!
Great vid as usual Matthew 👍
Great Idea!!! Run with it!

I absolutely love your videos! Content is always on point and your delivery is great and down to earth. There is nothing I hate more than those overly hyped, fake, cookie cutter RUclips videos. True pro when it comes to wood working and RUclips.
Thanks Travis! I just try to do me.
I just finished this one. When I brought it in the house my wife wouldn't believe that I built it, she thought I bought it. Thanks for the great video and detailed plans on Etsy.
My dad decided to make one back in the early 70's. 3 levels, 9 boxes per side. Made it out of 1/2 inch plywood. Think weighed a ton.
Man you are 100% RIGHT. Most all stores Only sell Junk. Because everyone has a dozen credit cards this is easy to pick up.
Thank you for all the great ideas. I've sold $400 in planters in the last couple weeks. It's a hobby for me and that much work makes it almost like a job.
That is awesome! Yea it's kind of what you want out of it. Some just want some extra cash other want a solid income stream.
You are a genius my friend! The ideas and simple to follow instructions is second to none! Thank you Matthew!
Thanks Terry! Glad you enjoy the channel!
Just finished up this project with your Etsy plans and it turned out really cool. My wife laid claim to it right after the 3 walls were attached. So I guess this one will be zero profit. Thanks for the inspiration.
Matthew , I always enjoy watching your build videos. You are very creative and come up with great ideas. Using fence pickets is a brilliant idea! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Michael!

AWESOME,,,GLAD TO HAVE FOUND YOUR CHANNEL
Matthew, Thank you for your content.I have been finding your chanell to be invaluable resource
Thank you for all the great ideas.
No worries!
Love your videos. Really got me back into woodworking with the prices of wood the way they are.
How do you come up with such awesome ideas? I feel like my brain has turned to mush as I've gotten older and my creativity has disappeared.
Since there are not so many Martins ( In German we call them "Sperling" or "Spatz" ) around any more, we will def build some of these later on. THX
Learned quite a lot on this video. Thanks.
Gonna save this video for a future project. I'll need to make a minor modification to the roof (waterproofing) since I live in a very rainy climate.
Note: I see this exact birdhouse on Etsy right now for $150, which is a far cry from the $350 you claim selling them for.
He never claimed that price for this build, watch video again and you can see he shows a different pic in a thumbnail 👍
You could add two holes on the roof for more bird house space
I would recommend sanding the joints you are going to glue to bare wood unless your glue specifically says it works on painted surfaces.
That’s really nice 👍
Thanks!
Awesome build!
Thanks!
Great video! Another project that I am looking forward to trying!
This is amazing! I think I’ve got enough scrapwood to make this without spending any extra money
Assume build ! Looks like I will be dragging out the MC and buying the plans . Thanks for the YTV !
Great build.
You're killing me man. One great idea after another but I'm keeping up. I have attempted to make at several of your projects in this series. I'm having fun. Thank you.
Lol. Thats the name of the game! Have fun with it. Thanks for watching!
Bro thank you so much for this I'm going to so copy these and sell them there awesome

I’m so excited to get into some cedar picket projects… your resourcefulness is impressive and I love your planter boxes….
But….. I can’t find cedar pickets it’s all sold out around me 😳

Thanks
Appreciate you.
I love this build! Definitely something we will be making and selling, thank you for videos you make 🙏
Wow! That looks great!
I think they call that depth stop a "trench cut" on a mitre saw. I've had my hands on hundreds of mitre saws and have never found one to not have it.
Nice... That makes sense. It's one of those super handy things that most people don't know about.
Great job!!!
Thank you!!
Just came across your page and subscribed. Thanks for putting your ideas out there for community growth not only with you but for our individual businesses. This is solid stuff. 👌 look forward to future videos and will have a peak at the others.
I enjoyed the video bought the plans. of note i will build one as to your dimensions. However If I was building for a Martin box I will have to upscale the dimensions. Nest box size and entrance holes are undersized. Please understand this is not a criticism. As we woodworkers often have to rescale projects to meet our needs. Keep up the good work.
Great build thx for sharing and the info Great project
Love it! Great Job!
Really nice
Cool
Will you make a video on PESEBRE de Navidad for decoration at the cementery 2×2 or 2×3 . That would be a hot sale. Thank you
VERY IMPORTANT!
ANY TIME YOU MAKE A BIRD HOUSE !!! The inside front panel (where the hole is) HAS to be ROUGH!!! Whether you put hardware cloth on it or use rough wood or cut small grooves in the wood (like a tiny ladder)
OTHERWISE the birds could (most likely) get trapped inside and die. - because if the panel is smooth (planed or sanded at all) their tiny little toenails can't get a grip to climb out and there isn't enough space for them to fly out either.
Which is literally the opposite goal of having a bird house.
I love that you told people this. I know it because I rescue every animal I come across but sometimes I forget not everyone knows little tips like this.
Thanks for the important tip!
Great tip and thanks for sharing!!!
Fence pickets are usually fairly rough if you don’t sand them
@@melissawf fence pickets probably would be fine for roughness, except they are treated... which I would generally shy away from using treated wood if it's going to be an animal enclosure of some form...which this is. (Like my rabbit hutch. Treated wood is only used for the legs that don't come in contact with the animals, everything else is untreated and not stained or painted)
This is one of those projects if we are going to make it for birds to live in we should probably upgrade to the cedar picket. Still plenty of money to be made tho.
My sister lived in the city suburbs,, I built her a few bird house's ,next thing I new here she come with me an order for 25 for her neighbors. Like you I enjoy taking scrap stuff an making something out of it,or those fence boards for couple bucks each at the time ,I could make 2--3 of the little bird houses from one. Last time I went to visit I could see my little bird houses hanging all throughout her neighborhood. I enjoy your video's. Take Care & God Bless!
That's really cool. I hoped you numbered them, just for curiosity. To see how many previously homeless birds now bring your Sister's neighborhood pleasure. 😊
I didn't number them, But I date & sign anything I build. It's neat & fun to pick up something and see I built it 5--10--20 years ago or more.. @@yLeprechaun

New follower. Mad skills Dude.
Matthew,
Greetings from Detroit, MI. I followed your plans and completed my birdhouse over several weekends using five pickets. As a beginner, it was a very satisfying project, with minimal cost and probably 10 hours of work. My mistakes were not expensive. The only problem was that the pickets warp quite a bit so nothing really lined up easily. I added a scrap of Tyvek underneath the shingle strips to try to keep the rain out of the interior. I'm really happy with the result and look forward to attempting your other project ideas.
Ideas on a pole to mount them on?
Very nice!!
Draw up the plans on a computer or have someone do it for you, sell that on click bank. One tip, make some templates, saw you laying off the shingles, and other repetitive marks...a template will save you a ton of time.
This is a beautiful birdhouse. However, please make sure you build in a way to open it to clean it out! Most birdhouses have to be emptied occasionally. Thank you.
Hey dude me again. This is amazing been thinking about bird houses and bug hotels recently they seem be really popular. Missed u last week was waiting for the video that never came!😞 Glad to see you back this week. Gonna give this shot. U really getting $350 for these? 🏴👍
Hey Michael! Yea I had to sit out a week... but honored that you noticed! I havent sold these. The one that I showed in the picture was the one that I used to get $350 for. But it was huge. Hand cut shingled roof.. multi level. It was a decorative piece.
One thing you might want to add to the design is a few small holes or cuts in the floor of each compartment. Will allow for any liquid that gets in (either rain, dewm or from the birds) to drain out and increase the birdhouses life a bit and its pretty easy to do. Overall awesome project, would be kind of fun to see a small railing on the front like a southern plantation house. Not sure if that would dissuade the birds though.
Actually its kinda necessary to prevent the young Martins from falling that might wonder out of the box! It won't dissuade the adult Purple Martins one bit!
So I made my $6 planters. The first one I kept to intrigue my neighbors. The second I took for the family reunion auction. Both were made with pickets we had left over from when we replaced our fence. The auction one went for $60 and would have been higher but the heat and an anniversary party kept the reunion small.
That all being said, I've invested in new tools. My husband's tools are about to hit the classics age, so figured I'd treat him to a new table saw, sliding compound miter saw with stand, and the one tool he's always wanted but couldn't bring himself to buy for himself, a pro pocket jig like in your video. Plus organizing and cleaning the garage since he is using his vacation week to help elderly disabled relatives fix their home. Can't wait to see his face at the surprises.
Thank you for these videos, they have inspired me!
I've given you several likes and am subscribed. I like you work and your attitude. Keep it up. To your Martin house I must say it looks very heavy and how do you give it it's spring clean out? It's really very nice looking, especially perfect for a rural setting.
Best regards and like I said, buy low and sell high!
No No! That's not what I said!
Made my prototype this weekend. Any tips on how not to blow out nails on the corner posts? I had issues because of angle of the gables
Congrats to the winning guesses !!
Yes!
Am I missing it? I don’t see the cut list in the description. Once again, great video!
It's available on his etsy shop
Hey so sorry I forgot to put it in! I just put it in the description.
Surely water is gonna get through the roof slats ? there not bonded together or lapped ? or was it just an idea ?
If people use it as an actual Martin box, wont the roof leak like a sieve? Rotting out the interior eventually? Very neat looking for a decoration though.
New to the series.
Do you sell the things you make on Etsy or do you sell them locally somehow?
I'm curious how you get started selling things. I just make stuff for myself and for gifts.
Great looking birdhouse!
Couple of quick observations:
Could the cutoffs from the gable ends could be used for the roof support?
The gable ends could also have holes drilled for an additional two nest boxes. The roof would have to be removable.
Cut the shingle details before ripping the roof strips, cut the pieces a half shingle longer and then just flip them to create the offset pattern.
Yes they could. I actually used the cutoffs for one end of my prototype. I just didnt want for someone newer to the trade trimming small parts on a miter saw. And yes with the roof removable you would have room for 2 more end boxes.
"Cut the shingle details before ripping the roof strips, cut the pieces a half shingle longer and then just flip them to create the offset pattern." this for sure.
Nice
I was just thinking about using Wood glue. I was wandering if the stinch of glue would keep the birds from Nesting..?
i would add a hole in each gable end for more nesting spots inside the roof.....screwing down the last shingle on the back for cleaning
Mathew's plans, cut sheet, all of it was easy to follow and my first Purple Martin Birdhouse was a great success! Your videos have a focus on selling and marketing, which for me helps you standout in a big way. Thanks Mathew.
seems like it would leak. the split in the "cieling" board is right above where they would nest. how do you access the interior to clean out old nests?
Saw a few comments , people worried about water getting in , simple bead of silicone between the 2 ceiling boards would solve that
Love how using saw cuts makes it look like more pieces of wood went into creating it! One question: is the roof waterproof? it seems like rain would come between the shingle slats and flow between the two ceiling pieces.
I was wondering the same thing .It's the way the third and fifth "shingle" course is recessed behind the course below . It looks as though water will run behind the second and course. Plus, it just doesn't look right having those courses recessed behind the course below. I think the Purple Martins will love it though. FYI- Purple Martins never land on the ground.
He glued them so the water will not penetrate the glue.
After hearing those prices I'm building bird houses! And planters and obelisks and whirlygigs, and cat trees and plant stands, lol! Wish I had some kids! Thank you for all your wonderful videos, Matt!
Don’t forget the squirrel tables. for the love of God the squirrel tables!!!!!
@@Slyfox1775 Thank you! Almost forgot! Good thing I "squirreled" away lots of lumber over the years! lol
And I still forgot! Guess I'm getting old. But I'll never grow up, anyway!
@@Slyfox1775 Do you find that they are still popular?
I've built some, just haven't advertised them yet.
How long did this project take from start to finish?
If it's like anything I build the first one will take 2-3 days, the second one takes a day or two and after that you can batch out like 6 in a day 😂 This would be all about how fast the paint or stain dries. Whatever you do don't rough up the wood for a weathered look then use gel stain, it'll be wet 3 days later! 😆
@@_Rick_S Some effing stains takes literally days to dry.. even laying outside in Greek scorching sun. :/
Other are dry before you can clean your brush. weird.
@@Coen80 🤣🤣 yep pretty much! That's why I use all water based finish now, dries fast and easy cleanup with just water. Going to try that grey gel stain again but in water based, we'll see how that works out lol
@@_Rick_S that’s exactly how it goes 😂 first one takes long as you figure stuff out/ run into issues for the first time. Second time you are more used to the build and anticipate the issues heading your way. After that it becomes a breeze 😂😂
@@_Rick_S yes i also started using waterbasis for cleaning purposes, and now you mention it these 'non dryers' might indeed all be petrol based stains.. come to think of it...
This is great. Heading to the store to buy em outta pickets and 1 1/4 pocket hole screws.
What would be the most secure way to put this up on a pole?
Great video. I'm a new subscriber
I just built the farmhouse style planter from pallets. It took a lot longer than it should have, but it's a good starting point to get some money for fence slats. The premium slats are 4.50 at my local lumber yard, and anything of lesser quality might as well be recycled pallets. I made the cedar planter too, and it turned out really nice. Love your channel.
Where do you get the glue applicator and how do you keep the glue from hardening up between projects?
Another great and simple build Matthew, you are the Bob Ross of woodworking, explaining and showing how to do it all, you are the man, thanks again
Hi, first video, first minute and first tip for you: if you gonna start talk measures in metric units then I hit like and subscribe :)
About the design: I like, nice, but that for our human eyes, not for the little creatures. The front step is too big for the predators to come. not safe. That's why usually we have that hole high up in a houses and little stick that only little bird would be able to sit on it before it goes in or sit and look around. For the decoration purpose or use as a feeder it's fine. Unless this house is for some kind of little bird breeders who breed birds which birds never been in wild and generation by generation lost that safety instincts and they are totally fine to breed cuz they are only birds in that environment where they are.
I would be doing only 2 holes on each side in the middle of a canopy and attaching small piece of wood under the holes where only small birds could stand on, and if want for the look of those windows at front you always can drill in not fully just for the view and paint dark as like they would be there. upper holes also protect from the weather :) Also side holes can paint in white the inner edges so they would be stealth
Matthew Peech, do you track your comments? Never seen yet spam like that before.
Make sure you guys have at least $3000 worth of tools before taking on this project 😄
So I'm in the process of making the herringbone planter. First time using fence pickets for anything but a fence. I have to say, if you can afford it, opt for better boards. Either get the cedar pickets, which at my Lowe's were cut better, or get 1x6 lumber or something. These cheap pine pickets have been a struggle. It's a time or money situation, which one do you want to spend?
I get Cedar and run them through the planer a couple times. Then rip to even 5.5 or 5.25"
Hey Matt, I have made the planters and sold them all, but I have been asked about making Wishing Well planters, I figured that might be an Idea for you, not sure if that would be for other followers?
Thanks
I have made them in the past. I'm just thinking viewers are getting tired of planters. I really dont know. lol
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking I'd be interested in wishing well planters!
Dude you’re bad ass
Great build! Question, couldn't you have cut the "shingle" marks prior to ripping the strips? Just seems it would be a more time efficient method than processing each one. As we know, time is money.
That's what I have in mind. 👍 Besides, I don't have a sliding miter saw, so I'll have to use my table saw. MUCH easier to do the whole board be fit pre ripping to depth.
Legend love it what's the glue you use for braces 👍
Thats CA glue. I'll throw a link in the description.
Great build , I would love to have one . I might add tar paper under shingles
