    I am so glad I'm not alone on Into the Drowning Deep... I had high expectations for it because I do love SciFi and water horror.. BUT it took FOREVER to get into the water, way too much background on the main character, who also made really dumb choices, the ill-timed "enemies to lovers" romance BS, the scientists did unbelievable things, there was not enough underwater horror, and the ending was just resolved too quickly and I was like... huh.. that's it? That's ALL they had to do?? (Middlegame is also a 5⭐ all time fave so another reason ItDD was disappointing)

    • @ErinMegan
      @ErinMegan  6 месяцев назад +1

      Omg the romance!!! It was so random and odd, which is saying a lot because I love romance in my horror! The ending was sooo frustrating. It felt like everything had just started happening and then poof it’s over. 😫

    I totally agree with you on Theme Music. I was so mad at myself for finishing it, but it was a book club pick. Hated the characters, the writing and the story 🤦‍♀️. However, Hex is one I love and recommend a lot.

    About Hex: it's NOT just the translation. The original Dutch is equally horrendous. I think the author got a lot better with his writing in his latest releases (November and Oracle), but his earlier works (Echo and Hex) I hated with a passion.

    I loved the first ring book. I understand why people dont like the main two characters but its more realistic than having protagonists that are pure hearted. As far as the MC's friend that helps him being an assaulter, i think there is enough evidence that he made it up.
    His theory that sadako let herself be assaulted and murdered because of depression. Her mother killed herself, her farher was dying, and her acting career wasn't taking off. She was a powerful psychic who could have killed her assaulter if she wanted to. When the main character asks why she would allow that to happen to her, his friend told him that she didn't want to die a virgin. Even when sadako's killer retells the story he says he was compelled or driven by an urge to kill her, that points to sadako taking over his mind. After the main characters friend dies and he talks to the female student "lover" she says that she believed that he had never been with a woman and was really soft and sweet. It is possible that the friend made the story of assault up because he couldn't get a girlfriend and the only way someone would believe he could have sex is by assault. In this characters mind dying a virgin was his greatest fear, even greater than the fear of being known as an assaulter and thats exactly how he died. He was outwardly brash but all clues point to him wanting people to like him, he just didnlt know how to show people his softer side. I mean he dropped everything to help his friend out and ended up dying trying to help him. I could be way off but I've read through the book 3 times and after my second read through I saw him in a different light. Im not trying to make him a hero but i do think he is misunderstood.
    Also the MC realizes that he loves his family by the end and was terrified that he wouldnt find a way to save them, he had became numb from his day to day life.

    So I just finished “TPC” and I agree, it had no idea what it wanted to be, focused way too much on the vampire aspect, but the actual story was way better if Tremblay would’ve figured that out. “Art” was a depressed prescription drug addict who had delusions and wanted to blame “Mercy” for all the bad happening in his life. It was easier to believe that Mercy was a vampire sucking his soul than him being depressive and lacking a ton of self worth. I figured it out during the “dresser scene” when Mercy said her point of view. That’s why she kept saying this was a novel, because none of it was true. It was horror in the way, “Trainspotting” is horrific, but Tremblay didn’t write it well for it to come off that way which makes it worse.

    • @ErinMegan
      @ErinMegan  6 месяцев назад +1

      The dresser scene is what made me realize what was going on too!! I was disappointed because I think if Tremblay had done the vampire thing and really leaned into the horror, it would have worked better. Instead all we got was this book that was riding the middle between two ideas and never fully giving us either. 😭

I'll get it figured out eventually. However, my two Clive Barker suggestions are: 1. Books of Blood/Very highly regarded with his fans, and this book is short story format too. 2. Mister B. Gone/shorter novel/tends to be a 3 out of 5 stars for most fans, but it still was a kickass story to me! I SINCERELY hope that you will become a Barker fan as well! But, I'll let you decide!!! :)
