Here’s the thing, if there are 380,000 channels with over 10k Subs, then why not offer these RUclips badges, in terms of let’s say funhaus - adult humour, suggestive behaviour, gaming, movies or ETC show - news, world politics, movies, strong language.. so on ., this way all channels can apply for badges. Post this advertisers can be shown the 400k off channels and be given a “package” dependant on the amount of money they pump in. Example Toyota decides to put in 100usd for YT advertising . They can first off choose car channels, choose family friendly channels not related to cars, and potentially anything else they want to advertise on, caveat being each amount slab mandates you need to advertise on let’s say 6k channels under 50k subs, 5k channels 100-50k and so only a small or average number of huge channels get their ad spot. This solves a majority of the revenue problem for both YT creators and the advertiser. As far as flagged videos are concerned, somewhere down the line they will need to manually view videos. Yes I agree personal biases will potentially be a problem, but at least it will sort out a large large majority of randomly flagged and demonised videos. The algorithm may not improve, but Even for it to, it needs time. Creators affiliated with a parent company let’s say RT and its subsidiaries- FH, SP7, AH, Know, Let’s Play etc or Machinima and affiliates, IGN and affiliates, Casey neistat, and so on, get clean chit badges where it’s established that they’re friendly channels. So let’s say they make some content which is offensive, it would need behind a certain number of flags on the video for it to be reviewed by RUclips . These are just suggestions that seem to make sense to me .
The only problem I see with these badges is that i would assume the majority of channels would want to be family friendly because it seems to be more profitable. Family friendly would be what most advertisers would want to go with since these channels would pose little to no risk for the advertisers brand.
Mr. Czarcasm I see your point but look at sponsors like blue apron, me undies, audible, car manufacturers, tech companies. These guys need adult viewers for their ads as they’re the only ones who can afford to buy into their products right ? Imagine selling high quality undies to a 7 year old, it’s unlikely he’ll tell his parents to buy him cool new anti microbial, soft silk undies right ? Also this idea will give the manufacturers options and potentially the creators a way to even approach these companies saying hey, come check out our channel, we’d like to be sponsored by you as we cater to such and such a demographic . If the pewdipie debacle showed us anything, it was that sponsors are willing to fund stuff as long as it isn’t attached to hate speech or religious extremism. Plus this is where badges come in right, YT friendly meaning adult content but friendly. Now if a hate speech channel gains 10k subs, or gets flagged for hate speech before it reaches that amount, YT will issue a badge saying it’s been flagged for hate speech once or that the channel itself is controversial and talks about extreme topics.. Also these are just ideas 😅 don’t think anything will come of this anyway .. I’m sure there are millions of smarter execs they hire to think of this stuff, I just feel this may help.. again I’m no pro so I may be wrong all together 😅
Who would decide who gets a badge and who doesn't? You'd have to hire an entire department to review channels to make sure they qualify for it, which still puts you back in the position of having to have an impossible amount of human beings on your payroll; all of whom have been trained to abide by the same judgment standards.
Lol don't say that or else they'll dedicate a bunch of time and resources to make a shitty cartoon that nobody likes and then they'll just get bitchy and depressed when it doesn't get enough views
I think there are people out there who seek content that challenges their opinions. For example, I listen to the conservative news talk radio station in my area because I like listening to people with points of view contrary to mine. I'm talking Rush, Hanniti, etc. If you don't try to go against your own grain, you're probably stuck in an echo chamber.
At about 20:35, lawrence describes soupwine as soup made of wine, but that would be wine soup, wine being the adjective. Soupwine would more accurately be wine made of soup. What are your thoughts on this issue?
Adam, I like your idea of the people or companies who are certified to 'check up' on demonetization issues. And your idea of having a system similar to a medical license is a great idea, where a malpractice can get said license revoked making it difficult/impossible to work in the same occupation again. I believe that regardless of if the person doing this job is employed by the channel, RUclips, or a 3rd party business, there's still a conflict of interest because the employee relies on the videos getting proper monetary care, and getting demonetization issues resolved. If the videos continued to be 'deserving' of demonetization or conflicts with said issue weren't resolved, the employee's job security goes out the window, because the channel wouldn't be able to, in the long run, support the employees salary for no return value, and the same for RUclips and other companies who might be involved, those jobs could easily become obsolete if videos are still getting demonetized. Obviously it's not just one way or the other, it'd end up somewhere in the middle, but kinda like Elyse brought up, I personally don't see how there wouldn't be a conflict of interest at all/most times (love the content, you guys rock).
Man, going into the kid side of RUclips can really lead down into a messed up hole if you aren't careful. The worst part is that a lot of the messed up videos on the kid side of RUclips that should obviously be demonized or taken down aren't. I think part of the reason for that is because there's not much awareness about the issues with these type of videos. Thanks for helping people become more aware!
Is there any way you guys could cut the children’s segment into its own video so I could share it with parents? It’s presented so well and with so many examples and I really think more people need to see it.
I'd try some sort of community approval / delayed upload system. So you're wanting to upload a new 5:00 minute video to YT. It gets uploaded a placed in a bucket for review. While your video processes, you can review other users videos waiting approval and give it a thumbs up/down. After a video gets enough approvals, it can be successfully published. I think this could reduce the overall work YT reviewers have to provide.
I haven't had a chance to watch the whole video yet but my social media professor (yeah that's a thing) showed us the article "Something is Wrong on the Internet". I clicked around and haven't seen you guys explicitly mention it but Lawrence brings up similar points at the very least. I don't believe the system will confuse plain RUclips Poop with content kids should watch. YTP isn't made with that intention. It is just often dark and absurd humor from heavily editing the video of some IP. It isn't necessarily trolling. But if someone wanted to make a video for the sake of traumatizing kids, what is stopping them? They could be an actual troll (one that maybe hasn't thought through the consequences of these actions) and make the similar 30 minute word salad videos and buy some bots to boost me up. Once the algorithm includes them with innocent (albeit creepy) videos of the same ilk, they could use their platform to harass and traumatize any children who are shown these videos.
I actually love this channel for it's great diversity of videos. One day y'all are laughing at ridiculous demos and the next it's an intelligent conversation about current issues that effect youtubers, viewers, and many other people. Also I bought the poster woot woot
WALL of text here: I sometimes seek out information contradictory to what I believe. I'm pretty pro-gun, and I'm friends with a few folks that think we need really strict gun control. That is to say, strict to the point I find disagreeable. I've actually read a lot of articles vying for stricter gun control so I better understand where they're coming from. It's actually been pretty enlightening. The way arguments have been articulated to me in the past, I always thought folks found issue with the ability to /own/ weapons like AR-15's, but I've come to find that most of the aforementioned friends (and at the risk of assuming too much, a lot of pro-gun control folks) find issue with access to those weapons. And that's something even a lot of pro-gun people would be inclined to agree with (background checks, gunshow loophole, that sort of thing). It's like we've been arguing about two different points, and neither side is receiving the intended message. Not trying to contradict your point about people's tendency to seek agreeable stuff. I'm just saying it's really helpful to break that habit. And if anyone read this far and wants to have a real discussion, then let's do it.
Just wanted to say thats a great way to view life as a whole and from my country (Singapore), guns are illegal and crime rates are considerably low, its also a small place so that might affect it as well. Hope people around you dont change that view.
Gun control laws should be more stringent. That being said, it will not deter a lunatic from pathologically carrying out a plan. Unfortunately we’ve reached a point of no return. I hate it as much as you do!! But the fact of the matter is there are so many guns out these new stricter policies would do very little to stop people who really want to carry out such an attack. Also wherever there is a new law, you better believe there are criminals who will try to capitalize on that laws existence. So what do we do? I don’t know! If I did I wouldn’t be leaving comments on RUclips. What I think is happening is we are as a society becoming numb. Not because we are bad people, but because after seeing it over and over we become desensitized. To top it if we feel helpless to do anything which breeds apathy. I think we will reach a point where it almost doesn’t mean anything and that in itself will become a deterrent for all of these copy cats. All I know is I want it to stop 🛑
We are definitely a major minority. Statistically people never go find an article or fact check. Heck people who do fact check never go to deep. I consider myself moderate left, but thats because of my extensive research into the right and left. Many people are like adam. People who live in ignorance, people who look at the fire in the allegory of cave. While active people who look into info are the ones that go out of the cave. I hope one day I can reach the fourth level of helping people come out of there cave. There is something to say how mad i got with how Lawrence talked, to the point i wanted to unsubscribe. Its that attitude that has lead to such a system. Regardless its the world we live in and the people who are far more educated in true education, not conspiracy or not credible sources, Professor are not even needed just active knowledge. These people who actively seek out knowledge will truly be successful atleast a marginal factor in there lives. Ignorance is bliss, but Ignorance causes people to be sheep to other people. If anything be the leaders of knowledge. Thanks for pointing this fact out my man. Glad to see some people who arent sheep but arent crazy people believing they know what no one else nows.
I'm glad to say I am someone who does take the time to look up information that may contradict what I think I know. I began practicing such a thing when I was continuously proven wrong about many different subjects. It's a nice eye opener from time to time.
OMG Now this killed my brains "27:00 - Children's content being made by bots." I didn't even think of this nor did I pay attention to this! this is crazy! Great Job Great Research Great Video. Thank you. I have to add!! This is Crazy!!!
4 things. 1) 62 peoples salary is nothing when you consider how much revenue RUclips would get from the lost revenue that would be regained, youtube obviously get paid too when adverts run. 2) Casey also said 100,000, which makes things very different. 3) he also suggested that after a while creators can become whitelisted. 4) its only the demonitized videos they need to check.
I can't stress how much I love my Casper mattress, it was a bitch getting it up three flights of stairs by myself but the cal-king sleeps myself and my girlfriend very comfortably and I sleep more soundly.
I wish the journalism had started a little earlier than 9:00 since Neistat literally recommended 100K subs in the same breath, and never meant either recommendation as a hard number. It's obvious it was never about the specific amount of subscribers, but about RUclips giving its top channels (the ones that make good money for RUclips) the benefit of the doubt. Also, they're not saving time if they have to go back after the fact and manually check the demonetized videos later, they just lose their cut of the adsense from these multi-million subscriber channels.
36:25 The funny part about this, is that it's paradoxical to try to find a real truth by looking for statements that are supportive of your idea. The only way to find a real truth, would be by finding an anti-thesis of your own idea/statement/ect, and discern the middle ground between them.
Simple solution: Don't demonetize anyone. The people watching RUclips are the targets of Ads, not the content the Ad runs against. Demonetization was a reactionary measure to advertisers pulling out, but that vacuum WILL be refilled by advertisers who see the mass audience that is no longer being bought by the competition. Current algorithm is doing nothing to stop bad content, it is doing everything to take money away from honest, hard working creators.
I feel like what youtube can do, is instead of hiring people to watch videos, but instead to have the users, i.e. channels, to watch youtube videos with the payoff of more advertising for that user. youtube is growing and so is its audience, i think this is an equally mutual solution.
I genuinely appreciate lawrence's game journalism. Dude should just have his own channel to breakdown the nitty gritty in the youtube gaming sphere. Bring Adam for backup maybe. But i'd watch the shit out of a channel like that.
My cousin's 3 year old tried to stab me with scissors. When I grabbed the kids tablet, there was a bunch of Frozen Elsa videos where Joker would try to kill her right before Spider Man saves the day. Shit's scary.
What about a system where creators pay RUclips a monthly fee to check their videos before demonetizing them. This way it's not discriminating by channel size and RUclips has a monetary reason to do it. A video makes most of it's money in its first few days, and therefore they can be assured it's either monetized during this crucial time or that they wouldn't have lost ad revenue anyway. This system may not be the perfect compromise but at least this way both parties get what they want; the creator knows that the video was viewed by a person and is not wrongly demonetised and RUclips gets another source of revenue and something to point to when creators complain.
The RUclips algorithm and these robot-created videos are exactly the reasons my kids aren't allowed to watch anything on the platform. There is too much disturbing stuff out there and I can't trust anyone other than myself to filter that kind of stuff out of my home.
I'm not sure if anyone else has suggested this, But RUclips could enable and third party company to do a portion of the demonetise strike processing for them. They would have them follow guidelines set by RUclips, and the way the company could make money and also keep demand in control would be that youtubers would have to elect and pay a monthly subscription fee for the company's service. Like that of a car insurance company. That way they don't have an overwhelming work load, youtubers who are willing to invest are catered for, And enough money can be earned for the process to be worthwhile and the workers can have adequate pay and conditions within the company. Just an Idea i thought of. :)
Okay so I’m having a hard time understanding “add friendly” because to me I don’t see why corporations that are pushing their adds wouldn’t want them to be placed in all videos regardless of the content that the add is put on. I don’t see why they have a problem with the adds being seen by people who watch a non “add friendly” video. The more viewers the more money, and you only get that by placing adds everywhere not just one approved type of video.
I remember being a kid and that happy tree friend thing happened. I remember an animal sent flying on top of a flag pole and it went through its eye, and it just slid down the extent of the pole. It was weird, but atleast I was old enough to not care so much.
It has been for a long time. Anything connect to google has bots that do keep an eye out for specific searches. What makes that bad is that they're ad specific bots.
Thank you for this video. My kid will watch “Baby Shark” & will sometimes press one of the videos on the side. I need to make a playlist just for her with videos I approve
I like Elyse’s idea of a third party, but why not have the companies themselves choose where their ads are placed? For instance, if I’m Toyota, I can have my own employees say “yes we have reviewed Funhaus and we think they are a safe space to air our ads”. While certain channels may not get as many ads and therefore money as others, they don’t deserve them because their content isn’t raking in as much of an audience. When an advertiser buys a billboard, they know and select which billboard to put their ad on. So when a company buys ad space on RUclips, they determine the channel who gets their ad. Any holes in my logic?
So what if RUclips is controlled by robots? Lawrence used to be a laptop.
Hostile and he used to be the boss in the incredibles.
This is the only comment that matters
Haha, awesome throwback. I love it!
i miss disembodied laptop voice lawrence
he's lookin too good now to hide behind that technological veneer. That long sleeve shirt and weight loss? Lookin' suave af.
I loved watching James' pained face trying to back up that tractor trailer for like 5 minutes
oh man that was painful.
I got pissed because he didn't need to back it up at all
Here’s the thing, if there are 380,000 channels with over 10k Subs, then why not offer these RUclips badges, in terms of let’s say funhaus - adult humour, suggestive behaviour, gaming, movies or ETC show - news, world politics, movies, strong language.. so on ., this way all channels can apply for badges.
Problem with your suggestion is that its too logical.. RUclips has proven to apathetic and backwards towards fixing this..
Who would decide who gets a badge and who doesn't? You'd have to hire an entire department to review channels to make sure they qualify for it, which still puts you back in the position of having to have an impossible amount of human beings on your payroll; all of whom have been trained to abide by the same judgment standards.
you forgot leftists hate adult stuff and would rather be lazy
The willems doing cute things in the backgroung warms my heart.
And makes me feel alone.
"Whats flappy and stiff at the same time batman? HAHA ME!" : Pervert Riddler. I really want James to flesh this character out now, gimme a live skit.
Isn't that just Riddler?
ImpatientTurtle his name should be Diddler
The Riddle me Diddler
Lol don't say that or else they'll dedicate a bunch of time and resources to make a shitty cartoon that nobody likes and then they'll just get bitchy and depressed when it doesn't get enough views
Pretty sure Casey said 100000 subscribers, for channels that should have human review on demonization.
he said 10,000 or maybe 100,000 so i agree that should have been stated as well
Bumping to raise awareness of bad games journalism.
FYI its Nice Tat not Knee stat
Elyse putting on her hood, truly embracing her new rapper life
Excuse you, her rap name is “E-Dubz” & the movie 8-mile was based entirely off of her lyfe!
What I want to know is how are Casey Neistat’s videos considered non advertiser friendly?
'What's floppy and stiff at the same time? Me, Batman!' 😂
18:44
Oh, Adam. I NEVER miss a Simpsons reference (even though it may not have been)
ruclips.net/video/n39897a9hNk/видео.html
James and Adam : "Con Con!!"
Adam: "are we bothers now!?"
James "YUP!"
It's pronounced "nice tat"
It's pronounced 'skip'
Ducky Man if you can stand 10 seconds of them debating his name. That seems more like a personal problem.
+Skankhun42 It's a shame that Casey doesn't have any ;)
boy gotta flex, gotta flex flex flex
Lawrence looking ON FLEEK
DoomSaurus cringe use of old slang
hence why I used it, but I do really mean that
I’m digging that fabric pattern on his shirt myself #NotHardNettin
2011zbjr Cringe is way older slang than fleek, welcome to 2017 kind sir.
Why are there so many Lawrence comments, do you want to be featured in the comment show or what?
To combat demonetization everyone should just upload on pornhub, i’ve heard they are pleasant to work with and their ads are kinda awesome
pr0ph They probably wouldn't need to edit Demo Disc as much
Ah, but the fun is having blurred, lewd content on RUclips.
James I bet you I can battle your pits. Other Bleaches ain't got nothing on me!!!
You guys are the reason my ride home from school is bearable.
I think there are people out there who seek content that challenges their opinions. For example, I listen to the conservative news talk radio station in my area because I like listening to people with points of view contrary to mine. I'm talking Rush, Hanniti, etc.

James' expressions this episode stole the show.

At about 20:35, lawrence describes soupwine as soup made of wine, but that would be wine soup, wine being the adjective. Soupwine would more accurately be wine made of soup. What are your thoughts on this issue?
All I know is they should have made it DudeWine or WineDude

"Go get a moon waffle" is a wonderful 1920's insulting dismissal.
I agree with James, Hard Netting is about consistency in your art.
Probably my favorite episode of Dude Soup so far. Interesting and funny.
I quite enjoy listening to dude soup as I work.
Always a good slice of pop culture.
I love when Lawrence says "I'm a journalist" Adam and James look at each other like....

Love how Lawrence's stuff is slowly invading Elise's desk. Keep those girls stacking on your desk dude! They will rule the entire office!
Lawrence looks fly as fuck in this. He's like the coolest dad.
I really dig the lighting in this Dude Soup!
Am I the only one that shook his head at Adam's "chosen ignorance" line at 42:49. I liked James' look after that.

OMG Now this killed my brains "27:00 - Children's content being made by bots." I didn't even think of this nor did I pay attention to this! this is crazy! Great Job Great Research Great Video. Thank you. I have to add!! This is Crazy!!!
This video filled me with genuine terror at the thought of our future as a society.
"we're not robots" then Adam and James simultaneously CON-CRETE at the same time 🤔
Holy crap. Funhaus talking about Fred Penner's Place. I felt like I was the only one who remembered that.
During that Blue wine ad read I really wanted Lawrence to just start drinking that red wine.
@iBehemoth iS Shut up you dumb bitch..
Also I hate hearing about Casey Statcom *
Don't mine me, just waiting for the comment with the Stewie Griffon profile picture and 10k subs.
Just ordered that amazing poster. Instantly liked it, and bought it. All funhaus content is 11/10.
Terminator's Skynet prediction came just a few decades too early.
36:25 The funny part about this, is that it's paradoxical to try to find a real truth by looking for statements that are supportive of your idea. The only way to find a real truth, would be by finding an anti-thesis of your own idea/statement/ect, and discern the middle ground between them.
its so cute how much adam and james are bffs. gets me all warm inside....
they sat on opposite sides because they sit together TOO much.
Bruce is lurking in the background, he already accepts our AI overlords.
i''m so pleased jelle's marble runs won for a second week running.
From Tennessee, can confirm Tennessee mud is different from Mississippi mud.
I like the idea that The Riddler is just a pervert. That would make the character a thousand times more interesting.
Lighting looks very nice in this one!
Peppa drinking bleach is the hardest nettin' thing I've seen on this podcast yet!
Something funny yet insightful into funhaus
No one should make fun of Law Dawg in this video for wanting mud to squish, because as a fellow southerner from NC I too enjoy watchin the mud squish
I feel like what youtube can do, is instead of hiring people to watch videos, but instead to have the users, i.e. channels, to watch youtube videos with the payoff of more advertising for that user. youtube is growing and so is its audience, i think this is an equally mutual solution.
Now I have a headache.
Ooh, this'll be a good one 😃
Edit- Lawrence, Defranco says Casey's name quite a bit, you're incorrect on the pronunciation.
I genuinely appreciate lawrence's game journalism. Dude should just have his own channel to breakdown the nitty gritty in the youtube gaming sphere. Bring Adam for backup maybe. But i'd watch the shit out of a channel like that.
Solid journalism Lawrence.
Lawrence is rockin' that shirt!
51:51 for classic Adam
What was the thing that had a trillion views? The channel with the most views only has 24 billion
Lawrence Sonntag - " I bring the math ".
Aww cute! James and Elyse wore the same pants! I wonder if they’re the same size
My cousin's 3 year old tried to stab me with scissors. When I grabbed the kids tablet, there was a bunch of Frozen Elsa videos where Joker would try to kill her right before Spider Man saves the day. Shit's scary.
i love watching everyone's faces during the casper promo....they're all like..."we don't own any of this shit"
Aww James and Ellis are wearing matching pants
Not screwing people over should be the top priority. Everything else like making a profit is cool as long as you don't screw people over.
Wow great podcast guys 👌
What about a system where creators pay RUclips a monthly fee to check their videos before demonetizing them. This way it's not discriminating by channel size and RUclips has a monetary reason to do it. A video makes most of it's money in its first few days, and therefore they can be assured it's either monetized during this crucial time or that they wouldn't have lost ad revenue anyway. This system may not be the perfect compromise but at least this way both parties get what they want; the creator knows that the video was viewed by a person and is not wrongly demonetised and RUclips gets another source of revenue and something to point to when creators complain.
Holy crap Lawrence, you're lookin' good! All that hard work is paying off, my man!
Loved the bruce entrance at 50:08, he looked sad.
The RUclips algorithm and these robot-created videos are exactly the reasons my kids aren't allowed to watch anything on the platform. There is too much disturbing stuff out there and I can't trust anyone other than myself to filter that kind of stuff out of my home.
I have a theory that funhaus is actually just one very long and intricate ad for marvel puzzle quest
I would absolutely LOVE to see an A.I. generated YTP
I once had a job where my only job requirement was to draw boxes around other boxes on a computer. Not exaggerating, that was my job.
I actually hate myself for laughing at those troll peppa pig videos bc that shit is fucked up but for some reason I'm crying laughing
I need to make a playlist just for her with videos I approve
tigmathis there’s a RUclips kids setting where it won’t allow them to view just any video. Use it for nephews cause they love RUclips, works great.
My boss goes to Concrete Con, CONcrete, Con Con etc. every year. It's apparently a lot of fun and a ton of drinking.
