    Nice video.
The caps go bad due to them being fitted right up against the metal heatsinks. Caps die much faster when they get hot.
Using modern high quality ones that are higher temperature rated will give much better reliability.
It's worth checking the bridge/diodes for dry joints too.

The one thing I never see anyone do is put thermal paste behind the voltage regulators. I did and it helps dissipate heat better.

    • @plecebomc

That's true thermal grease for regulators and such often gets overlooked I'm even guilty of that

Yes, the connector to the rest of the console has the same pinout and voltages

Hi, thanks. I have a relatively new Dreamcast (US version), just a week of use (24 hours per day) which was stored for about 2 years without being turned ON. It won't read now but the laser is glowing faintly, it spins, the laser sled moves, including up and down. Which capacitor should I replace? Do I need to replace all capacitors on the PSU? Where can I buy good solid state capacitors for the Dreamcast's PSU?
Thank you. Could you list the capacitors here. The link doesn't show the list.
    God bless, Revelation 21:4

Wierd... I am having this problem where the drive only reads after the DC is warmed up but the PSU caps look fine (like yours). Especially these Chemi-con caps usually fail with blown vents and these look perfect.
Only thing that has brought me here is that my PSU is heating up a lot and I thought something else was wrong. Will measure the caps on the PSU, as mine are Rubycon and I don't think I ever saw one of those just fail.

Measuring the capacitors is a good measure

Woah dude! I have a Dreamcast that when i turn it on, the LED kinda flickers like it's not getting power and the system resets alot. I'm going to try changing the capacitors too! Thank you!

    • @SianaGearz

First off the single most common issue on the Dreamcast is that the connector that adjoins the logic board underneath with the power supply on top no longer works properly, it suffers from oxidisation and relaxed contact pressure. This issue is extremely common, i had 3 Dreamcasts (all VA1 EU) and all of them had it. First step is to just clean both connector sides very thoroughly, and tension the leaf springs, simply by poking them a little bit so they press a bit harder against the header. This guy bent the pins on the board instead, and while i'd be afraid to do that personally, ultimately if it works, it's fine, it solves the same problem. If that doesn't help, you may consider a recap - whether it's needed depends on luck, on climate, and how long it ran, but generally the Dreamcast PSU doesn't seem to have any other fundamental faults.
As a cleaning agent you may consider isopropyl alcohol, or residue-free electronics contact cleaner, or i use a particular brand of residue-free plastic-safe brake cleaner that happens to be chemically identical to my preferred electronics contact cleaner :)

@@SianaGearz Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I'm not super skilled at electronics repair but i love servicing my good old Dreamcast! At first, I adjusted the laser pot and it helped but then it started resetting again. I really don't like adjusting the laser pot :(

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 лет назад

I don't think adjusting the laser did anything in your specific case to be honest, when the laser goes off calibration, it shouldn't reset the system, it mostly just locks up or the drive keeps making sneezing sounds. Chances are the process of disassembling and reassembling the console allowed the power supply to make contact better for a short while because the whole assembly flexed and moved a tiny bit.
