I worked in a Wendy's on the grill station. When you see how the meat comes in, square makes more sense for packaging and transport. The burgers come in fresh, never frozen. So, the patties are separated by wax paper, so you peel off a piece of paper with the patty attached and you can put it on the grill without even touching the patty. Since the burgers are fresh the patties would potentially get disformed in transport. In contrast, I also worked for McD's for 3 days before this. Those burgers were frozen round discs.

Ok so I'm from Ohio, where Dave is from. When he was a kid, he worked at a place called Wilson's. Dave stole all of Wilson's recipes and food styles, everything!! It makes me happy because its proof that we can connect to each other. The sharing of foods, art, culture is what brings us closer together as a species.
Every December they sell keychains and when you buy them the money gets donated to foster care and you get a free Frosty each time you show your keychain.
I met Dave Thomas as a kid. He was selling 25 cent frostys for charity. It was at a breakout hockey tournament at the Tampa convention center the last year we held the all star game there. I was 13 and he was so humble people asking for pictures and he didn’t see himself as a celebrity
The founder of Wendy's created the square hamburger patty as a marketing scheme. Their commercials used to say something like: We don't cut corners in the quality of our beef
Huh. I always assumed that at some point they'd had equipment that could more easily produce square burgers than round ones, probably by pressing the raw hamburger in a large sheet and then cutting it with a rectangular grid of thin wire. (A lot of food shapes can be explained by the equipment that was historically available, e.g., that's why sticks of butter are a different shape in California than most of the rest of the country.)
I worked at Wendys when I was in high school from 1978 through 1979. We used a machine to patty the square burgers. You had to keep a consistent flow through the hopper on top to get the pattys complete.8 pattys to a stack and 8 stacks per pan.The machine also placed a paper between the pattys so that when they are being prepared it was easier to put them on the grill. The motto was hot and juicy. Sad they aren't like that now. @jonadabtheunsightly
It was also to make it appear there as more meat on it. He claimed people would see the meat hanging off the edge making it seem like you were getting more value.
Yeah Jolly and team should work out a deal to feature this segment in Wendy’s marketing. It reminded me of how good their food is under the fast food category and motivated to go find a Wendy’s and enjoy the higher quality fast food as a treat.
I cannot see American teens trying food like they are. Usually they take one look and say I am not eating that. I always tell my grandkids if you don't try it you will never know if you will like it, but they refuse. These boys are polite. They try it all and their manners are very good as well. We need to teach our teens better.
@Buttsceatcgee Test scores say otherwise. Massachusetts blows away any states education system that isn't in the North East or midwest. Even then it's still better, but there's some close ones like Minnesota and Connecticut
So glad you’re creating again. You guys bring sunshine to my world. BTW: holding the frozen dessert upside down is actually Dairy Queen’s Blizzard schtick. Wendy’s has never claimed that, which is good because the Frosty (what us Yanks call it) melts really fast.
@@icollectstories5702 Blizzards tend to have candy or cookies mixed in. I'd imagine that sprinkles are an option, but other toppings are more popular. Like M&Ms, Oreo cookies, Peanut butter cups.
@@icollectstories5702 Blizzards have ad-ins, like Oreos or fruit. DQ has posters in their stores showing the upside down cup and saying it’s free if it drips. And they’re supposed to flip it upside down in front of you.

Frozen custard is actually way better than Dairy Queen, so much so that it ruined DQ for me. Andy's and Culver's are two must try chains that have it. The texture is incredible and they make a new batch hourly so it's just right.

The reason why the Frostie has a much more subtle flavor is that Dave didn’t want them to overwhelm the flavor of the burgers. Surprisingly, one of the key parts to achieving that was to combine both chocolate and vanilla into the mix.
When they brought out the frosty, I kept saying “They have to dip the fries in the frosty!!” I love seeing these kids getting older and guessing how they will react.
This is seriously one of my favorite series to watch on YT, the "British Highschoolers try" videos. Love them. The kids are just adorable, and I love their reactions! So honest!
Dave Thomas was adopted as a baby, worked for Colonel Sanders, came up with the red and white bucket for KFC, started Wendy's in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio (my home city/state), and became a big advocate for adoption starting a foundation under his name. The Frosty is my favorite "ice cream". And yes, you can't have a Frosty without dipping a French fries in it!
I grew up in a smaller town not too far from Columbus and I remember as a kid doing trips to the original COSI (Center of Science and Industry) which was right across from the original Wendy's location, which would be where we always grabbed lunch, and so I have really fond memories of it. It's unfortunate that it's no longer there as that location was more of a unique experience from the other chain locations.
No, Wendy's Frosty used to be like wet cement. It wasn't going anywhere. Even upside down. I tested this many times. Now it's not strong enough to act as the mortar in the great Wall of China anymore.
These highschoolers and their headmaster are just so cute. Their reactions are so funny, whether they love or hate the items. I really enjoy these videos.
When that kid reached for the fries to try with the frosty, I actually screamed YEAAAHHH and put my hands in the air, such good memories of doing that growing up
Its a common thing among the workers at Wendy's as well. Worked Grill for 2 years awhile ago. Love the Spicy Chicken with different sauces and pickles too
Yes. I am surprised the colouref boy didnt ask for a slice of watermyfor dessert! It is in there culture to be fair. They probably got home and started jiving to reggae!
Dave Thomas began his restaurant career at Regas restaurant in my town, Knoxville, TN. It was open for 90yrs and finally closed down in 2010, much to the dismay of many Knoxvillians. I ate duck for the only time in my life at Regas for my wedding dinner appetizer.
Them:"Why not square buns with a square burger?" Me: "Cause that's White Castle which was the first." Edited quote: "White Castle also uses square patties - an invention that actually predates Wendy's. According to its history, the chain began in 1921 in Kansas by selling square hamburgers that were easy to eat and called “Sliders.” In 1954, White Castle added five holes to the patty so they could cook faster."
fun fact: the square shape serve to make better use of the grill than with traditional burgers. while the shape gives it a distinct look, it also allows them to cook more food in less time, giving them their reputation for "faster food". Yes, it is true that the speed of the past is not as it once was, but still runs laps around the likes of Mcdonalds.
I do like the occasional Frosty, but Dairy Queen's "Blizzard" is the one known for being safe to turn upside down for a short while after it's made :) "Chocolate" Frosties are good for dipping fries into.
I love how the banter between the headmaster and Josh&Ollie is different than the banter between the kids and Josh&Ollie, yet both funny and entertaining
The issue is really consistency. McDonalds is consistently mid. If you have had a tough day, you migh settle for a con mid rather than trying to gamble for gold
American grandmother here--these videos bring me such joy and laughter! All of you are so precious, and i know these food moments are a lot of fun for you to produce. Thank you for brightening my day!😊💖🇺🇸
Canada 🇨🇦 here, When i was your ages, i worked at Wendy's and i can honestly tell you, Wendys uses fresh products only. The cheese is NOT that fake processed stuff, the Frosty is actually a dairy dessert you eat with a spoon, the bacon is high quality applewood smoked bacon. The beef patties are made fresh daily from huge packs of fresh lean ground beef, its inserted into the top of a stainless steel patty press machine which presses meat into square pattes with wax liner sheets in between. The patties are stacked into stainless steel pans, covered in stretch wrap and refrigerated to only be used for that day. Any patties unused daily are cooked well done on the grill, then chopped and put into freshly made chilli which is also one of their products made with fresh sauce, their own spice mixture, the beef patties, and huge really rinsed well kidney beans. Its not overly spicy though..perfect really because anyone who prefers spicier food or chilli receive foil packettes of Wendys hot sauce to mix in. They also serve huge russet baked potatoes (if you prefer baked, instead of fries), which come plain (with butter) or sour cream and chives, or loaded with melted cheese and REAL bacon bits. Their chicken sandwiches are also fresh and pure 100% chicken breast meat, NO FILLERS. They also offer grilled chicken breasts if you prefer foods not fried, but grilled. Lastly, they have the most delicious healthy salad choices as well. The chicken ceasar compares to top restaurants, real cheese dressing, actual bacon broken up, garlic croutons and you can get it cold with warm fresh chicken chunks...so delicious!!! They have other assorted salads, all fresh, crisp and delicious. They even have a Taco salad, it comes with various lettuce types, shredded cheese, a container of chilli your pour on top, fresh sour cream, & a fresh packette of taco chips. The salads are large and a meal in themselves. Wendy's founder Dave Thomas named store after his daughter Wendy. He was adopted child and grew up into an amazing entrepreneur founding Wendy's restaurants with only the best ingredients. The fast food Wendys chains promote adoptions, have donation receptacles on the counters, and donation blitzes whereby if you donate $2.00 you receive a coupon for basically a free burger meal, so its valued more than your donation, at least here in Canada, not sure about the U S. Glad you all enjoyed the food. It was fun watching you all try it out and enjoying yourselves. You all seem to be such polite, well-raised, well-mannered young gentlemen. I was very impressed with you all. ❤ from Ontario, 🇨🇦 CANADA
That's cool! I used to work for Wendy's for a long time here in America. Did you guys have a secret menu? Like ours was a T-Rex burger, it was a Dave's Single but added 8 patties to the sandwich.
@@Nulifenaction65 Unfortunately, it's probably simply because they don't sell enough. I personally like to get a side of chili to dip my burgers and fries into. But I can see that it's probably not the most commonly sold menu item.
The paddy's are square so that meat hangs out of the bun. The sides of the paddy's are suppost to always reach the sides of the bun. So the square provides some extra meat in the corners. Worked at wendys for a couple years in high school and a coworker read that in Dave Thomas's autobiography. He really was big on quality, and why it's still my favorite fast food to eat.
I love it too. I’ve noticed my 15 year old son now says their slang like oh my days. He plays online with kids all over the world and it always amazes me the little things he picks up from each friend. But oh my days always makes me think of these adorable gentlemen.
Great seeing you Jolly people! Dave Thomas actually worked in my hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana, as a teenager. He worked at a restaurant called the "Hobby House" which was a purveyor of "KFC" chicken. Dave's story is absolutely incredible, and he was such a humble man. If you ready Dave Thomas' story versus Ray Kroc's story, you will be able to know why Wendy's is sooooo much better than McDonald's. IMHO Dave talks about who helped him to be a success, and Ray talks about who he "crushed" to become a success.
Little man's theory about chicken shops is the same as my theory on BBQ shops. You want them to have a corrugated plastic sign that's discolored and looks like it's been there for years.
Dave did the square patty to stand out and let you see that the patty is bigger than the bun itself and they do not freeze the meat it is always fresh and never frozen. Glad you guys love it!!!
My Mom & brothers LOVE Wendy's, I never liked it growing up. We used to have to go to BK afterwards for me because I was 100% a shitty spoiled brat as a kid. I still can't stand the beef, for some reason I always get bone shards whenever I get burgers, but the fries and all their chicken stuff is very good, plus the veggies are always fresh. If you get the app it's almost always free every day, just have to buy a $0.99 juice box, def not expensive but still WAY more expensive than BK or McD if you just go without the apps
Love that the principal gets to partake in the trying the fast foods around the globe. Thanks, enjoying the uploads. The students are hilariously funny and happy to eat. Most of all, open and honest with their assessment
8:21 I agree with the kid. Even here in America I find some of the best tasting food comes from little shacks that look like they haven't been updated since the 1950s. As long as they practice safe food handling and are sanitary, I don't care. I've been to newly opened restaurants that looked incredibly clean and have had the worst tasting food and have made me sick with food poisoning. That little dude knows what's up. 😊
Last time when I ate the bacon egg burrito. I was eating the burrito and I asked myself,"where's the bacon?". Then I saw some bacon bits in the burrito. I was deeply disappointed that I ate a scrambled eggs, potato, bell peppers and cheese burrito with a few pieces of bacon.
Dipping Chips in a Frosty is a thing in the U.S. In the 80s, when my son worked at Wendy's, the morning crew would press out burgers in a machine, from none frozen ground beef. The only thing frozen were the chips.
I worked at Wendy's too at that time and every morning they would bring us fresh ground beef & we used that machine to stamp out the square shaped burgers that would go into metal bins for only that day. That is why the burgers taste so fresh & juicy ! By the way the Chili is mostly over cooked hamburgers from that day.
Trivia from someone who has eaten Wendy’s for their whole life: Wendy’s has the freshest burgers, never frozen, unlike most of the big burger chains. It’s why they just melt in your mouth and taste so delicious. They are square because the meat is seasoned and pressed into a large rectangle pan and cut into squares. It’s all done by hand everyday and not by a machine. Needs to be easy and quick for the employees. When Dave died his daughter Wendy named his famous burgers after him. So the burgers were not always called Dave’s Single or Dave’s Double, etc..
The "Always fresh, never frozen" standard for Wendy's is also why you won't find any in northern Canada. It's too hard to get fresh beef up there, so Wendy's refuses to allow any franchises in several areas up north.
I spent 2 minutes on chatgpt and got all that info and more. The square patties actually did start as a marketing scheme though, square is no easier than disc.
Trivia from someone who worked at Wendys [line coordinator] for 5 years in the late 80's, those burgers were never, ever, ever made by us.... they came delivered fresh every day or ever other day, depending how many we used. Never frozen, always fresh. Any patties not sold in alotted fresh time were put in the refrigerator and chopped and boiled for the world famous chili the next day. Never kept more than one day, each batch of chili was made fresh in the morning. Trust me, you could never get kids flipping burgers to cut those so perfectly... never.
@@WARnTEA Depends on the branch but for the most part, its popular enough to rarely have more than 2 cups of chili leftover at the end of the day where I worked. Also while yes it can run out, (most of the time), there was another batch on the way with fresher meat due to extra burgers almost always being on the grill at any given time.
The reason the pattys are square was like they said to stand out and also because Dave said they don't cut corners in quality like other fast food which then became their motto as well "No corners cut" or "We don't cut corners". It sometimes even says it on the bags or burger wraps
Actually, I worked at Wendy's and we were taught working the grill to press each of the four corners with the spatula before and after a flip so that the cook on the burger happened equally and preventing any one corner of the burger being under or over cooked.
Having worked for Wendy's for three years in my early-mid 20's, it is my favorite fast food chain. Having also worked at McDonald's before that, the contrast in quality of food between the two chains is insane. As far as freshness and quality of fast food, Wendy's is top of the list.
My list of best fast food burgers best to least fave are DQ, Wendy's, BK, McD's. I'm from the Northeast so Five Guys is a decent burger but way overpriced & fries are a No.
Wendy's is either good or cold and sloppy. I went last week and the fries and burger were cold, it didn't have all the toppings, and had cheese when I didn't order any. MCDs always gets it right; it's the same every time and at every store. Frosties are always good, though.
Wendy's has gone down hill, by the current billionaire owner who took over since Dave The Founder died. We won't go to our local Wendy's. They are rude to all customers, and the manager told me and a 90 yr old widow at another table, in an empty restaurant, that had 30 minutes each to eat and leave, otherwise we would be loitering! I had just gotten out of the hospital for gall bladder removal surgery. I can't eat fast. I complained to corporate on my receipt. An equally unprofessional man banned me from being served! Wow! Pay top dollar for a meal and $6 for a soda and get treated this badly?! Never again! Wendy's now wants to charge customers higher prices for "premium hours". The Cedar/Herndon, Fresno, Calif, Wendy's has lost many customers, angry at the bad treatment.
Square patties vs. round means you can get more on a square grill. Plus, the exposed square corners on a round bun give the impression of even larger meat portions. Plus/Plus...you can eat the corners first like an appetizer which is more fun than none at all.
Wendy's returned to the UK in 2021 after a 20-year break and has since opened just over 30 sites, including company-run and franchised restaurants as well as delivery kitchens. This has included four drive-through sites in Colchester, Peterborough, Derby and Brampton Hut.
"Dave is a good man." Yep. I was adopted in 1969, just like Dave's beloved adopted daughter, Wendy. He launched the business that year, and everything was named in her honor. ❤❤

It makes me happy because its proof that we can connect to each other. The sharing of foods, art, culture is what brings us closer together as a species.
Another nice thing about Wendy's is that they donate, and you can too thru them, to adoption funds. Dave was adopted, so he likes to support that.

The founder of Wendy's created the square hamburger patty as a marketing scheme.
Their commercials used to say something like:
We don't cut corners in the quality of our beef
You can fit more square patties on a griddle than round ones - it was an engineering solution to increase efficiency in the kitchen.
@jonadabtheunsightly
Yes! I worked there and that's exactly right! 😂
It was also to make it appear there as more meat on it. He claimed people would see the meat hanging off the edge making it seem like you were getting more value.

The reason why the Frostie has a much more subtle flavor is that Dave didn’t want them to overwhelm the flavor of the burgers. Surprisingly, one of the key parts to achieving that was to combine both chocolate and vanilla into the mix.

He also came up with “Finger Licking Good” for KFC
I grew up in a smaller town not too far from Columbus and I remember as a kid doing trips to the original COSI (Center of Science and Industry) which was right across from the original Wendy's location, which would be where we always grabbed lunch, and so I have really fond memories of it. Why is it so inexpensive? Makes me trust it less.
The paddy's are square so that meat hangs out of the bun. The sides of the paddy's are suppost to always reach the sides of the bun. So the square provides some extra meat in the corners. Dipping Chips in a Frosty is a thing in the U.S. In the 80s, when my son worked at Wendy's, the morning crew would press out burgers in a machine, from none frozen ground beef. The only thing frozen were the chips.
And the frostys 😂
I worked at Wendy's too at that time and every morning they would bring us fresh ground beef & we used that machine to stamp out the square shaped burgers that would go into metal bins for only that day. That is why the burgers taste so fresh & juicy ! By the way the Chili is mostly over cooked hamburgers from that day.
Why don’t you have more likes?
Trust me, you could never get kids flipping burgers to cut those so perfectly... never.
@@shibalover54so did you guys end up throwing out most of your chili everyday? Is chili a popular item? Did you often run out of chili?
@@WARnTEA Depends on the branch but for the most part, its popular enough to rarely have more than 2 cups of chili leftover at the end of the day where I worked.
Wendy’s was my first job at 16 and none of the other fast food chains match up in quality of food.
Wendy’s fries gave me heart burn, and I felt a little sad that I can’t eat Wendy’s anymore, but I also don’t want to die🙂
So cool. Wendy's is top notch compared to other fast food franchises. That place is my go to.
"Dave is a good man." Yep. I was adopted in 1969, just like Dave's beloved adopted daughter, Wendy. He launched the business that year, and everything was named in her honor. ❤❤
Wow... thanks for sharing.
Not everything when he named multiple sandwiches after himself 😂😂😂
Dave was adopted, too.
I was adopted too and always knew about him.
Wendy was not adopted; Dave was.
I ain’t never seen someone struggle with a Wendy’s spicy nugget lol
Me neither usually even their ghost pepper items are tame enough that 99% of people can eat them with no problem
Those weak brit genes. They've conquered everything but all of the spices that they've stolen from the world.
they not used to eating food with seasoning lol
😂 my dad and brother are the same way. Dad literally struggles with black pepper too 😂
It’s the English. Flavour is a rumour there.
The burgers are square to show that Dave doesn't cut corners!😂😂😂😂
Canadian here. I work evenings/nights, and by the time I'm done work, fast-food restaurants are usually the only things open. I LOVE Wendy's, because they have a decent array of items that don't involve a slab of meat on bread. Their salad options are so good, and so are their baked potatoes! Also, unlike McDonalds, they don't price gouge you like crazy lol
So true. I miss the broccoli cheese potatoes! I used to get them all the time late at night on my way home from work- one summer in particular I pretty much lived off of them! :D
I really miss the Caesar side salad 🥗. It was the best! That and a baked potato was a perfect work lunch!
@@fatgirlhiking6250 🤯 No, really? They discontinued it where you are? No lie, I legit had one for dinner YESTERDAY (with a small poutine!!!)
Sometimes I think I halucinated the broccoli cheese baked potatoes lol.
@@lesmercredis they discontinued it years ago. Bummer
Retired food delivery guy here. Wendy's was one of our customers for a few years. The beef was never frozen. Sometimes we had to wait for the truck that would bring it from the meat plant that was by Boise Idaho. The lettuce on the sandwiches of course will be crisper if you eat it within 10 minutes of purchasing it. The nature of lettuce. It goes limp over time with heat.
Welcome back!!! I've missed you guys so much
I'd been (re)watching old videos to kind of seal the gap
Love these well-spoken young men! ❤️
These young school boys are delightful! They ALL are polite, speak so well, and all so cute! Lovely Brits!👏
