1981 my family and I lived in Cat Harbor. This was fascinating, amazing and creepy to watch. Thank you for posting it!

When I was young and stupid I built a raft out of drums and pallets. Me and a mate dropped it into fast flood water and went for a ride. We got about 50 feet before the raft capsized and pinned us against a tree. Luckily we managed to push the raft away into the current and haul our selves out using the tree we had been pinned underwater to and some nearby reeds. It was stupid and we nearly drowned. If we had managed to raft on down the creek we would have definitely come to grief where the creek turned into drain pipes under the road. Now I won't even cross a flooded street without testing the strength of the water.

I don't blame you. Luckily this wasn't that powerful and the man with the camera had a couple boats on the dock he could choose from to get off that dock.

I'm here from the Tonga tidal wave video of Jan 15, 2022 which is in memoriam, taken by a woman.

Big Wow Factor. Why you stayed on the dock is beyond me. Great footage however.

The guy recording was a patrolman at the time. I'm sure he felt safer on the water than the shore. All the Harbor patrol men and women were fantastic boat handlers

People are idiots and some wonder why so many first responders lives are senselessly lost. Smh.

Is that Catalina? on the west side of the isthmus?

Is that a sewer or river?

    • @Isthmus101
      @Isthmus101  2 года назад

It is neither. It is a harbor on an island, very much tucked in. That debris came with the surge

When you consider that the Japanese Tsunami raged 6 miles inland at it's furthest point and 128 feet at it's highest point, I think your community will be okay with this wee puddle.

    • @Isthmus101

Of course we were ok. Just itty bitty damages compared to Japan. Parts that were not recorded was that beached barge, out for it's yearly maintenance, had no engine at the time, and the water kept picking it up and trying to smash it into the pier and potentially could take down the moored boats (people's homes) as well. It took a lot of hard work on shore and from the water to keep that from happening.
Just because the damages are incredibly horrible elsewhere, doesn't make this experience not worth recording

Mini Tsunami's wake travels 5,545 miles from Honshu Island Japan to Cat Harbor CA. must feel like an omen
    .
Guy thinks to himself, Oh that's great, I tied down the boats to the dock , but who tied down the dock. Good idea warn the girl " Cindy, I wouldn't be out there..." moments later she watches you from shore as you drift away with the dock. Looks like the Sheriff didn't come to the rescue, his boat is stranded too. Just think the People in Japan will be cleaning up that damage for the next hundred years. Could happen to anybody. Nice video thanks.

The Sheriff did come down to check on his boat. There was a huge scene of the locals running down and saving skiffs and dinghys when the water went out. We had spotters announcing when the water was coming back.
Also, the barge was without it's engines and a maintenance guy was keeping that barge from taking out the pier and all the moored boats with a backhoe.
It was all very exciting and heartwarming to see the town come together like that
