M2 Pro Mac Mini - Unboxing and 4K Editing on Final Cut Pro

- Upgraded to the new Mac Mini with the M2 Pro. In this video, I'm going to unbox the M2 Pro Mac Mini, we're going to skip all the major technical specs and Geekbench scores to get right into real world testing by seeing how it handles 4K editing in Final Cut Pro. The footage being used was shot by a Sony A7IV in H.265 HEVC codec.
This video was shot with the Sony A7IV and edited on the M2 Pro Mac Mini. Purely my initial thoughts as I don't get too heavy into the details.
This is my FIRST video for the channel so welcome to feedback so I can only get better. If you like the content, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so we can grow this channel together!

I know my audio is pretty unbalanced so any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated! Looking to learn from others!
It seems the noise floor of the audio is quite high. Are you using the camera built-in mic to pick up sound? I would recommend use a lavalier mic or gun mic for audio recording. Nice video though. Keep it up, man.
So noise and the sound quality have been my nemesis since I started my channel. Ended up getting the shure, SM 7B and an audio interface.
Can’t wait to see your channel grow!!! ❤️
Clean, straight-forward. Nicely done.
@johnbarbuto5387 thank you!

@rodneydangerfield7153 glad it was helpful! Would love to see your setup once it’s done
Great job Matt. I'm deciding between the M2 Mac mini and the Mac Studio so your feedback helps a lot.I know I can do everything I'm doing today on the M2 mini but want to future proof myself for the next 3 to 4 years. Again thank you and keep recording.
@ramonperez118 thanks for the support! I’m glad I was able to help you out. One thing to consider for future proofing is that the current Mac Studio does not have a HDMI 2.1 port, it’s still a 2.0. So you would be limited to 4K at 60hz instead of 120hz and I believe 8k 60hz on 2.1. This would of course depend on the monitor/display you will be using. Right now that 120hz at 4k is beneficial for gaming but anything else I would think 60hz is sufficient. However, if you bump your display up to an 8k monitor, then that HDMI 2.1 will benefit you with the 60hz refresh rate. Not a huge deal right now but just something to consider for the future.
great point Matt. Just another thing to consider. Apple doesn’t make it easy.
Nice video, and I'm subscriber number 400 :)
Amazing! Thanks for the support! Hope you enjoy the future videos to come
Thanks Matt! I’m Just now getting into editing for my wife’s channel and have been shopping for a new Mac. Definitely answered a few questions I had.
Glad you found it helpful!
Got a 16/512 M2 in the mail! Can’t wait to get it!!
Yesss the best feeling is knowing that’s it’s coming. Enjoy it!
That’s why I left the plastic cover on the bottom.
Nice video!
I recently ordered the M2 Pro Mac mini myself, decided to go for upgrades though; the 12-core CPU/19 GPU’s, 32 GB uni memory, 1 TB SSD and the 10 Gigabit ethernet option. I opted for AppleCare+ too, never hurts. 🙂
Mostly going to use for a power desktop/workstation, for both techie work, productivity as well as everyday stuff, maybe some audio/sound engineering as well.
Looking forward to receive it, I have a feeling that the the power of a machine like this inside the sleek and well designed Mac mini format chassis, will provide me with one of, if not THE desktop experiences I have had in a long time. The ports on the M2 Pro version is “more than enough” for me, not too few and not too overflowing, another nice plus is that the M2 Pro supports HDMI 2.1, although I still expect to use USB-C for the most part.
Anyway, thanks for the unboxing and the tests you did, I subscribed! 🙂
@Zyking thanks for the support! Sounds like you got the best of the best for the Mac Mini. Should have zero issues with anything you need it to do
@Computron I think buy a 12-core CPU/19 GPU’s, 32 GB uni memory, 1 TB SSD also. Did you recieve it? Can you share your comments? Especially I wonder how much this configuration is silent.
@@atacoskun3597 Hi! Yes, I recently received the new Mac Mini, but I haven't been able to truly setup it up yet, as I am in the process of arranging a new workspace area. I will do it this weekend I think, and I can back to you on the noise level. Although I generally think that the noise aren't much of a problem on these, unless you do heavy stress tests on purpose that makes the fans go off, that sort of thing. 🙂
@@Computron64 I am looking forward to it.
That Sony camera is a killer camera! -don from Lorain Ohio USA 🇺🇸

Btw just bought the M2 mini but with 24gb and 512ssd!
@faithmartin2369 thanks so much for the support and coming along on this journey!
Awesome pick up! The M2 is still a monster and with the upgraded memory and SSD, you’re good to go
This is your first video? AWESOME editing skills! It took me 30+ videos to look nearly as good as yours so GREAT job! My channel is about Music Production so here are some options when it comes to audio:
1. Lav Mic (cheapest option but not the best sounding) You can attach to your shirt and read your script or film talking head videos.
2. Shotgun Mic (Rode or Diety) are great to put on top of your camera and record as your filming yourself do talking head videos.
3. Dynamic or Condenser Mics (Rode NT1, Shure SM7B) These are more expensive than the other two options but will give you a way fuller and richer sound to your voice. They will be great if you can get close to them while filming or reading scripts and recording audio in post.
Hope it helps and once again awesome job!
Thanks a lot for the support! I’m using the Zoom H4N but just had it propped on my desk and talking into it. I had to also had the vocal enhancer equalizer in FCP to it. I find that sometimes my voice goes really loud and then goes low but it’s probably me where I need to speak at a more consistent volume lol
@@mattchungz For more consistent audio levels, there is a tool called a “Compressor”. This will even out your audio levels and you won’t have to worry about talking at the same volume the entire time. I have made videos on my channel on How To Mix Vocals and compression if you want to learn more about it. You can also add it to FCP or in GarageBand since you are a Mac user.
@homestudioacademy Thanks for that, definitely going to play around with this and check your videos out!
Great video! I think I'll need a new Mac for video/photo editing as well and so far the M2 Pro Mac Mini looks like the way to go
@WincTech thanks for the support! For photo/video editing, the M2 Pro Mac Mini will absolutely handle the heavy lifting for you
@@mattchungz what about ram? 16 enough? Filters, transitions, multiple timelines
@enigmawstudios4130 16gb of memory should be enough to handle everything. My M1 Mac Mini was the base with only 8gb and I was able to get by, although reaching limits. 16gb is enough but if you have budget to increase the RAM, why not do it anyways since you can’t upgrade it in the future.
@@mattchungz I wouldn't upgrade memory because if the price increase of $400. It then becomes a competitor, price point, to the studio, and that machine is more worth it at that price
@enigmawstudios4130 that is true and climbing up the Apple ladder
Hello! Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us. Could you upload a little video to see how the m2 pro behaves in an edit with 4k 4:2:2 10 bit material, with 2 or 3 clips above the timeline? I would like to see how the viewing experience of the material is, if there is lag or not... There are thousands of reviews on the internet but no one is showing this and I think it is very important
That’s what I had in there, all 10 bit 422 4K footage and stacked with multiple layers. No issues or stuttering
I agree with you, why they don't make 4 rubber pads on the bottom to prevent sliding.
Thanks for the video..I'll sub. Good luck on your journey mate - i wish you broke down the specs / config of your Mini.
@elysiumcore thanks for the support! That’s true, I could’ve mentioned it. I have the the base M2 Pro and didn’t opt for any upgrades. So 16gb of memory, 512gb SSD, 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU. Hope that helps!
You could add sticky rubber feet.
Hi. Nice first video. Question: is that fan you can hear at 3:26?
Thanks! Good hearing, that was my wife blending smoothies downstairs haha but yeah it does sound like the fan. I haven’t heard neither the M1 Mac Mini or this one make any noise or even get warm.
Great video. What is your monitor for 4K editing?
@nameno8735 thanks! I’m using the Samsung UR55
Nice video, can you please let know 4k 144hz support is working properly or not?
@utsabbhattacharya HDMI 2.1 limits at 4K 120hz uncompressed, however you can get up to 4K 240hz if your monitor supports DSC (Display Stream Compression) and has HDMI 2.1. Hope that helps
I subbed bro I’m thinking of getting a Mac mini
@peanutbutterjelly.7 appreciate the support. Which model are you thinking of getting
@@mattchungz I have no clue lol probably the M2.I’m confused on the difference in storage and memory. Wouldn’t they be the same? And I noticed Mac store has a option to set you up with some software, is that a decent price for those programs? I have bought a computer in about 15 years
@peanutbutterjelly.7 I guess it really comes down to your use case. Whether you’re a casual user for browsing and regular work or if you’re producing content. Base M2 is still pretty capable. About the storage and memory, the base starts at 8gb of Ram, the M2 Pro starts at 16gb. The storage, the base M2 starts at 256gb and the M2 Pro starts at 512gb. All the stir about the base M2 storage speed is the SSD setup. It’s one SSD chip vs two and having multiple SSD chips results in faster speeds. We’re talking about 1.5gb/s vs 3gb/s so it’s still fast, just a matter of fast vs faster. Again, depending on your use case will depend whether that actually matters to you or not.
My recommendation: if you’re not producing heavy content, base M2 is fine but upgrade the Ram if it’s within your budget.
@@mattchungzthank you so much for that explanation. I’m starting to feel more comfortable with a selection. 🫡
Nice video. What software do you use for screen recording?
@supplytex7303 thank you! I just use QuickTime to screen record on a Mac.
hi, do you use samsung lu28r55 monitor? what color profile do you use on mac mini and what is your color settings on samsung monitor? Thanks. I have this monitor, but i have problem with correct color settings on this monitor.
@pavolvarga yes that’s the monitor I am using. I didn’t set any color profiles, just using out of box. Has been fine for me, however, if you are editing videos and color grading, I always recommend using scopes and histograms for accuracy.
Thanks for a great video, but now try a 4K HDR of prores (as apple advertise) and not in rec 709 but widegamut HDR. And show that!
@pep98 thanks! I don’t normally edit or put out work in HDR but why not start and see how the M2 Pro holds up. I’ll look into that
Merci pour la vidéo. ce moniteur fonctionne bien avec le Mac mini M1?
@franksiessa yes this monitor works perfectly fine with the Mac Mini M1
@@mattchungz ok 👍
So for heavy 4K 60 fps on Adobe Premiere pro, would you recommend me to buy M2 Pro Mac Mini? , Nice Video BTW
Thank you - you wouldn’t have an issue with the base M2 but upgrade to minimum 16gb of ram. The Pro would speed things up and handle more heavy lifting though especially going into multiple layers and graphics. It’s also worth holding off another few months if you can wait to see if Apple upgrades the Mini with the M3 chips
Thanks for replying, I will wait for M3 chips@@mattchungz
I guess this is better for video editing, then. Over the bade M2! I sometimes edit with 4K 60 fps :)
If you have the budget for the M2 Pro, then absolutely better in the long run. Though if you're a bit tight on budget, the base M2 is more than capable of handling editing as well, however, I would recommend upgrading your RAM to 16gb. Hope that helps
Where can I get those lights on your wall?
These are called NanoLeaf panels
Did you get the base model Mac mini M2 pro?
Yes this is the base 10 core M2 Pro
May I ask is there any bluetooth issues on the m2 pro mac mini ? I saw someone said on Reddit about disconnecting airpods and keyboard on mac mini. Thanks
I haven’t had Bluetooth issues. I have my keyboard and mouse connected all the time via Bluetooth and has no issues. Also connected my Bose headphones with no issues. I did run into some issues with my AirPods Pro disconnecting but I think it was because I had my iPad connected as a second display and so the AirPods probably kept getting confused which device to connect to.
@@mattchungz great thanks for your reply
Very nice presentation. My Mac mini M2Pro /32 GB ram just finished 4K Drone over Hawaii with 30 GB of video on FCP. Scrubbing with reckless abandon! Rendered in 1.22 minutes! It is far superior to my Alienware R13 productions. No hiccups! Not sure about only 16 GB ram when running such large files...
Nice! Same as me where not only this machine is literally a fraction of the size of my custom PC, but also destroys it in performance for editing. 32gb of RAM is beefy! Haven't had any issues with 16gb and I've had projects with over 100gb of video.
HyperX Quadcast S mic, not too expensive and really great sound. I have a video about it on my channel because I use it.
Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll check your video out!
Great Thanks you
Can you please tell me the monitor model ?
@Shady.Moustafa My monitor is the Samsung UR55. It's a 28" 4K 60hz monitor, considered a budget monitor but does the job for me.
@@mattchungzThanks
hallo from Athens!! ediitng 4k,60p,10bit in this mac mini is any case to struggle?
Greetings and thanks for watching! No struggle as that is what I'm primarily editing too. I find this Mac starts to struggle when you get GPU intensive tasks like effects (ie. noise reduction), animations, and so on. Especially when you pile more and more layers on. I'm usually not editing heavy projects like that but when I do, I find it chugs but understandably.
so the most safe choice is the mac studio with max
@@mattchungz
hallo!the 16gb ram is ok for editing on fcpx?
Yep, 16gb should be the minimum you go with
What are the other specs?
What's your variant m2 pro 16gb 16 core gpu?
@abpictures3349 Yes I have the base M2 Pro with a 16 core GPU, 512gb SSD, 16gb of ram.
Hey Brother. You’ve got me sold on the monitor. I want to support your channel and use your link for it but it’s not letting me add it to my cart. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. Also really enjoy your content. It’s really helped me out.
Thanks so much for the support! Glad I’ve been able to help you and that you enjoy my content. I checked on Amazon and doesn’t look like the UR55 is available there anymore. There’s a UJ59 Flat or UR59 Curved, both are 32” and 4K. However, I think mine the UR55 is an IPS panel, versus these models are VA panels. IPS panels give you better viewing angles but lower contrast, whereas VA is the opposite, better contrast but lower viewing angles. If you’re set on the UR55, by all means if you can find it elsewhere go right ahead! Your comment and support is already really appreciated and all I need!
I can edit blackmagic 6k braw footage this mac mini m2 pro,.?
I don’t have a BMPCC to test but I would think it handles it
Apple say the M2 Mac Mini can only do up to 2 screens - I find that hard to believe, considering my 2014 HP laptop can do 3 screens. If I use my current docking station thing, do you reckon that will enable a third screen for the M2 Mac Mini ?
I’m not sure to be honest. Though one thing to remember about Apple as a brand is how meticulous they are with upholding the quality of their products and their brand. If you notice, they advertise the support for two 4K and 6K displays. 1080p is a lot less intensive on the GPU and the Apple chips can easily support more than three 1080p displays. I think they purposely don’t mention 1080p nor build the support in to support that many 1080p displays in order to maintain that visual quality and experience for the user.
@@mattchungz good point. I would be expecting the 1080p across 3 screens if it was possible
What size ssd do you need to get fast speed? I heard the base model ssd is slow.
@KMLR2012 If you're getting the Base M2 Mac mini, the 256gb SSD is fitted with a single chip, whereas the previous base M1 had two 128gb chips. Having multiple NAND chips allow for faster speeds hence why the Base M2 is slower than the base M1 when it comes to SSD speeds. The base M2 Pro Mac Mini has two 256gb chips, which I think is fewer than the previous Mac Mini with the Intel chip as the M2 Pro version replaces the Intel based version for the higher end Mac Mini model. So if you're getting the new Mac Mini, get at least the 512gb SSD for the Base M2. As for the M2 Pro, you'll still get fast SSD speeds with just the 512gb. I believe the Base M2 256gb SSD was putting out about 1500mb/s. All other models put out 3000mb/s and up SSD speeds as the rest are fitted with multiple NAND chips. This is JUST for the Mac Mini, the Macbook Pros tell a different story.
I tested my SSD speed with BlackMagic and I was getting 3000 mb/s at minimum.
@@mattchungz Thanks
