It seems incredibly but I have a Rogue Monster 4 power rack and a Powertec power rack and I love both. My compliments for your beautiful Garage gym!
This was a friend’s of mine but it was absolutely awesome!
Beautiful home gym. Love the color coordination. Still have plenty of room to expand/improve.
I think he will have a lot of room on his walls for a gun rack for his bars or plate storage that are wall mount.
I have always been adamant about starting simple and expanding! Thanks for watching
That platform was simple but epic all at the same time, nice build!
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to make
Great video. Better than HGTV. Thanks.
Ha. Thank you for watching.
Just ordered the rml490c today in black I can’t wait to build it.. thanks for the tips
Thank you for watching. Please tag me in your completed build on Instagram if you have it. My handle is @the_kurtlocker
Very good video, thanks. Waiting for Rogue to get something in stock so I can order, this helps.
Last I saw there are some items that are coming back in stock! Best of luck in your build
Really nice gym.
Thank you!
Awesome build. So jealous lol.
I think a darker color (brown) stain would have set it off. Just me. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! The color of that stain did look good in person, but brown is what I have in my gym.
Love the video man! What are the measurements on all the plywood pieces and how many of each?
6x29/32 thick, 1x3/4 hardwood plywood (maple for this project)
I love watching home gyms are being built. I have had one for 3 years and I love it. During Covid19, I feel like a future teller
Agreed! They all thought I was crazy! lol
We home gym owners look like geniuses. Bodybuilders committing suicide without training. Crazy
Nice vid. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Looking back on this, it's been 3 years, if I'm going to buy a yoke, what should I buy?
Depends on where you live. I prefer the MB Power Center if in OH, PA or WV. I like Texas Power Concepts if in TX area. I personally think that there are a lot of smaller manufacturers that make amazing products. You could always get one from Rogue or Titan. The new Rep one is pretty awesome looking but I’ve never touched it.
Would the rack be better stabilized if you bolt it to the garage floor and build the platform around it? I would think eventually the rack would crack thru the wood platform or sink thru the mat with weight and time. Thanks.
I agree that it would be more secure but the house was only going to be lived in for about 3 years. We didn’t want to drill holes in the concrete as a result
For ppl watching, when cutting stall mats do the shallow cut then spray wd40. After that the mats cut so easily.
I’ve heard that but have never had an issue. I’ll likely be building a new platform soon and I’ll check it out then
I'm looking to do a similar build with that same rack. What are the dimensions of the top center plywood? I'm concerned the 2 inside holes on each leg wouldn't fit over a 4 foot wide center plywood piece based on the dimensions of this rack. Looks like yours do though.
The plywood is a standard 4’x8’ piece of hardwood plywood
Would love to know what the total cost on that gym build was. I am planning mine out right now and I am trying to figure out my budget! Thanks a ton!
I'm in the same boat. Looking at the 490C also.. nothing is in stock because if this damn Pandemic..
When it is all over, I posit the used market will be flooded with gear. That's the silver lining
@@875daily RML 490 is in stock just bought one today. 490c is still out of stock if you wanted the custom color or numbering on the hole spacing.
David Hajjar thanks Dave. Appreciate it 👍👍
Bro u are a good friend! hope he at least bought u dinner haha
Thank you! He did
How did you address that huge bow in the platform (beginning of video)? I'm assuming the garage floor isn't level?
There was a bow in one of the sheets of plywood. We stacked all the plates on it overnight
@@TheKurtlocker sweet thanks! Is their anything you do to check the garage to ensure it's level before putting these down?
I use a level to see how far off plumb the slope is. I used the shingle method in my garage gym 4.0. There’s a video on that.
@@TheKurtlocker I'll google that thanks!

I've watched this and another build, where the rack "feet" are screwed in such that they sit half on the plywood and half on the horse mat. Is there a reason for this and is the 3rd screw hole (the one over the horse mats) screwed down?
A rogue rack has an inside space of 43”. This makes the feet have 2” per side on the platform and 2” on the stall matting if spaces correctly. Which ones you screw down are a matter of personal choice.
The slope not a concern? I guess if u face downhill its ok (like having heeled lifting shoes)
In this garage there was only a 1” drop over 5’ of space. We didn’t need to really do anything for that amount of slope. In my current gym there is shoring under the front of the platform in the deadlift area. My next gym will likely have something more “better”.
I'm getting a 490 C rack and I have 8 of those mats in a 16' x 12' area. Low mat carpet underneath. If I'm not planning on doing TOO much deadlifting, do you really need the plywood base and all that?
You are probably fine without them
You're a good friend. Awesome vid. How did you handle the size dimensions of the platform? How did you end up exactly with the stall mats being exactly enough for both sides?
I measured and cut to size. Be patient while cutting stall mats. A few extra minutes spent making a straight cut yields significantly better results
It is 8 feet wide. The center wood is 4 feet wide. A stall mat is 4 feet wide. Just cut it in half and you end up with two 2 foot wide stall mats. The two pieces of stall mat and center wood are equal to 8 feet.
What did you use to anchor the rack to the platform? I have the same Rogue rack and will be mounting it to a platform with the exact dimensions in your video.
3/8”x2” lag bolts
@@TheKurtlocker Thanks!
This is perfect timing. I finally have room in my garage and will soon be starting my build. Going with RM6 vice the RML. Also getting the trolley arms. Going with red instead of blue (I'm a Georgia bulldogs fan). Going to make the exact same platform using this video. Also grabbing a SSB bar but probably gonna buy that from EliteFTS based on reviews. Everything else will be rogue except the weights. I have about 500 lbs of cast iron weights that I have accumulated over the years. Those should be good enough, right?
That sounds amazing. I have the Rogue SSB and would highly recommend the EliteFTS one over the Rogue one. You may be surprised how quickly you'll need more weight! Are you subscribing to a specific strength sport?
@@TheKurtlocker Weightlifting has always just been a hobby. never done any competitions or anything. As I grow older though (46) I realize how staying strong helps you remain mobile and agile as the body ages. Really becoming interested in strongman aspects of the hobby. I may start obtaining some of those pieces of equipment like a yoke, sandbags and maybe even a log. Thanks for the videos. They are a big help and provide great inspiration.
@@Strmshadow73 Thank you for saying that. I appreciate it. I love training and competing strongman
Bolt torque?
They’re not torques to a specific value.
Instead of prying out the staples. Just cut the pipe slightly back from the cap with a utility knife or small hacksaw.
Normally this is how I roll, but this wasn’t my garage and no saw was available. Never have tried with a utility knifed though....
Good idea, but I will keep the rolls in my attic for when we do our last move in a few years.
Awesome setup! Btw, Where did you get the stall mats???
Tractor supply co
@@TheKurtlocker I just checked it out and there's one in Galt, CA about 25 mins away from me. Thanks
I believe the PC term is "Cowperson boots".
It probably is. Seems like the sensitive way
Bwahahahaha. I was scrolling through old comments and stumbled on this gem
Is this the lite blue or the dark blue color?
Light blue.
The sockets are 15/16? Not 1”? The 1” is just the width of the bolts then? Gotta return the socket I bought today then lmao
15/16” tools for monster lite series hardware
@@TheKurtlocker and those are the 1” holes?
The bolt holes for the monster lite are 5/8”
Hey just a quick question! does the 8ft wide deadlift platform serve you well? id like to go the 8ft wide route rather than the 10ft route (cutting the horse stall mats long ways, rather than in the middle) to save on space and cost, but I'm a little worried about it being to narrow to deadlift on, id love any advice!
I wouldn’t go narrower than 8’ for the platform. It does offer about 6”-12” of space at the ends of the bar depending on your bar. You could consider building you platform to be 8’x12’ or 8’x6’. That would alleviate any cuts to the stall mats
I recently did an 8x8 build for my basement that has been fantastic so far. For cutting the stall mats I popped a chalk line down the center, scored it with a razor knife, rolled it in half so the mat would spread apart where I had made the first pass with the knife and finished the cut with a hacksaw.
Good form!

Awesome home gym!
She’s a beaut!
I plan on buying this rack found it on Craig’slist for 825 $ but it seems like too much rack for me
Do you mean it is too “overbuilt” or that it’s just too big?
Kurtis Stadsvold too big i only have a few hours to decide I’m supposed to buy it tomorrow ...
Kurtis Stadsvold looks like it might take up too much space? I have the rogue squat stand I need to upgrade it’s not ideal for 450 squat mid 300s bench press..
Mike Smith is it the 690? If so, you could always just setup part of it and either store the other parts or sell the pieces you don’t use. You may be able to recoup most of your cost.
Kurtis Stadsvold 490c
Just having a feeling when your gym equipment arrives on pallets and you get to unbox, carry, and build all of it. It's just the most exciting feeling ever plus using the equipment too.
It really is.
So one thing I would suggest is to buy some 1x2’s and use as a surround for the platform, it cleans up the edges of the platform and prevents splintering If kicked. Kind of like a picture frame. I typically just paint it black. Also by doing that you don’t have to screw the stall mats down, they fit into the grooves perfect.
Not a bad design idea. Thank you
Love you buddy
Awesome home gym, looks like mine!!!!
The ONLY thing I would of done is paint the floor with that grip paint, and a few rogue flags 😉
That would have been a nice direction. Thanks for watching!
Nice video, nice build I guess I have to ask why so many people especially home gym folks go with Rogue, it’s so overpriced and there are so many options out there that garage guys will never “break”.idk, I’m not hating I just think everyone needs to watch Coop and realize that even though his places puke Rogue he shows ghat Titan is a good alternative, like I said I’m not hating and people can buy what they want, screw me im out...oh I cringed when u said you like to do things right then didn’t use washers when bolting the rack down, PEACE!
I think my main allure to Rogue is because of the quality difference, not necessarily the durability. 11 gauge steel is pretty standard in almost all power rack fabrication and that is plenty strong. Holes being cut consistently, quality in fit and finish, and good shipping and customer service keep me coming back. I specifically remember this build with the washer portion. We didn’t have them right then and there so opted to zip them down anyway.
Thanks for watching the video. Nice attention to detail.
Why did he order a power rack and a squat stand?
It is a power rack and a yoke for doing yoke carries
Lmfao. If you don’t have a buddy go find one. That’s a good one
Best advice ever
My wife will help me. I could get either of two friends and or my brother too.
Great video - just totally stole your build but have a red RML 490. Those stall mat cuts with a blade are brutal - switched to jig saw with the mat resting on 2- 6’ 4”X 4” square posts. Snapped a center chalk line and Cut them like butter.
I may have to try some other blades. My past experience using a jigsaw were definitely not butter. Thanks for watching and enjoy the space!!
I just finished my home gym! Horse stall mats are great. Try cutting them with a jigsaw, it works amazing 👍🏼
Happy to hear you had luck with that. I’ve always used a utility knife
Great Setup!!
This gym was a great setup. My friend had a really good idea of what he wanted and bought what he wanted when the money was right.
So I have a question....Which would you prefer RML or RM? Bench-405, Squat- 505 and Dead-565 right now but wanting to get stronger. Im doing my research but I can't seem to find much difference except for the price and hole placement.... Leaning toward RM mainly because the hole size of the RML seems like it couldn't hold the weight I would be using. Thoughts?
The RML would hold the weight, but I think if I was to redo my gym from scratch I would go all Monster series. There are more attachments and more options. The holes for the monster series also go all the way around each post at 2” on center and have laser cut numbers for the holes. The small details that the monster series has makes it the better choice in my book. It’s their staple line and the effort of the company will be spent there.
@@Pler1978 There is definitely no doubt that the weight requirements are not the deciding factor between theRML and RM. The biggest factor to consider (for me) is the expandability and future innovations. The RM is the flagship series and has seen more innovative attachments. The Monster series is how I would go if I give recommendations. When I get to redo my garage gym, it will likely be Monster Series.
Also seems like the 490c is too much rack
Nice set up buddy.
Thank you! I’ve been accumulating this stuff for awhile jow
best home gym/Blue is pretty
I love the blue
@@TheKurtlocker I like blue, too. My hat, clothes, bag, and lifting belt are all blue.
I recently bought a rml 490 and will be attaching it to a platform instead of the concrete. Is a lag screw the best or is there a better option? And is 5/8 the only size that works or will another size work too?
I use lags when I connect to a platform. Im sure that there are other options, but I've never had a problem. I don't use 5/8" lags for this either. I will usually use like 1/2" or 3/8". Just make sure to use washers and don't over-tighten.
Would over tightening cause the platform to crack I’m guessing? Or is it something else?
No, it would cause the hole to strip out
Does stall mats have rubbery toxic smell? I am reluctant to by them for my garage gym. Can you advise? Thanks.
They can have an odor to them if they are new. I have built platforms with older mats and newer ones and in both cases the smell, if any exists, disappears pretty quickly
