Very interesting! In Germany we have this system: beginner white, 8 kyu yellow, 7 kyu orange, 6 kyu green, 5 kyu light blue, 4 kyu dark blue, 3 kyu brown, 2 kyu brown, 1 kyu brown, then 1 Dan und above black
I am san kyu. Brown in our system. I've always liked the legend of how the belt color system started. White like new snow. Then yellow as if seeing the sun. Green after rolling in the grass. Brown after digging in the dirt. Finally black when the knowledge cannot be washed away.
I thought there was more homogeneity, actually. In my surroundings we have white for beginners, then yellow, orange, green, blue, brown. They are assigned in the dojo, but certified by the national federation. Black belt is awarded only by federation, and is black from shodan to godan; rokudan on get a white-red belt. I am godan, but this is my ceiling, as I could get rokudan only if I were (but I am not) a teacher or an international referee.
I started Shotoryu (old school Shotokan) in 1970. We first used a white rope until we learned stretching and basic exercises. We were then allowed to wear our white belts. We only had 3 belts. White (6th, 5th, 4th kyu), then brown (3rd, 2nd,1st kyu), then black belt after passing an exam. If you failed you had to wait 6 months to retest. Our highest black belt rank was Godan (5th dan). The title "Sensei" was only used after 3rd dan. After my 5th dan I received higher ranks from American Associations. Our belts today are white, yellow, green, brown (3 levels) before black belt. Our karate was harsh, but real. All self defense oriented. I enjoy your channel. Thank you.😮
My belt colour order is: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Brown Black. But we use the Brown belt for 1st,2nd and 3rd kyu. We also have belts with a mixture of colours, e.g. blue-brown to differentiate people who failed to progress from blue to brown.
We've got nearly the same system where I live. Except for the "people who failed" part. We do have a mix of white and a color for kids, though. So before they reach for example Orange they must go through White with orange stripe, Orange with white stripe, and then finally a fully orange.
We have basically the same (Shotokan-Ryu Kase-Ha in Sweden). 1-3 kyu brown, 4 and 5 kyu blue, 6 green, 7 orange, 8 yellow, 9 white with black stripe. We also have more belts for kids (white with color stripe, color with white stripe and then full color).
I am 3rd Dan of Shotokan Karate in Brazil and we had huge JKA influence due lots of Karate instructors sent from Japan to Brazil by Nakayama sensei on the 50's period. The belt color classification today is based on 7 steps of kyu rank from 7 to 1 as following sequency: White, yellow, red, orange, green, purple, brown after starts Dan rank from 1 to 10 with Black color only.
In JKS Shotokan Karate that I practice in Sweden, we have: 10 kyu White, 9 kyu Red, 8 kyu Orange, 7 kyu Yellow, 6 kyu Green, 5 -4 kyu Blue, 3-2-1 kyu Brown, 1 Dan upwards Black. I myself is 55 years of age and found my way back to karate after 30 years, now training for the same Sensei I had back then. I'm now at 4 kyu hoping to go to shodan before I turn 60.
Shotokan in Poland: 9th kyu - white 8th kyu - yellow 7th kyu - orange 6th kyu - green 5th-4th kyu - blue 3rd-1st kyu - brown 1-dan and above - black I've just come back to Karate after a 30-year break. Waiting for my 8th kyu exam. Excellent channel. Keep up the good work and all the best!
I started Waldo Ryu in 1965 and changed to Shotokan in 1966 where I remained for over 40 years. The belt colours should go darker as they progress so that they can be more easily dyed, rather than changed. At one point a message came from high up that the first belt should be red not white. This was quickly reversed when it was found that red belts were for 10th Dan!
Back in my day, living in Havant when I learned Shotokan Karate as a child I remember the belt colour grading as follows: 1) White 2) Red 3) Yellow 4) Orange 5) Green 6) Blue (the colour I remained on due to not completing my training, having moved house) 7) Purple 8) Brown 9) Brown 1 white stripe 10) Brown 2 white stripes 11) Black
shotokan from brazil white > yellow (6 kyu) > red (5 kyu) > orange (4 kyu) > green (3 kyu) > purple (2 kyu) > brown (1 kyu) > black I was brown in shotokan
I'm a Ni Dan and I'm just starting to practice again. In my early days the colors of my federation (SKI-Italy) were: 9th / 8th kyu - white 7th kyu - yellow 6th kyu - orange 5th kyu - green 4th kyu - blue 3th /2nd / 1st kyu - brown above Shodan - Black My first sensei is a direct disciple of Hirokazu Kanazawa. Osu!
Oooo mine is similar White Yellow Orange Purple Blue Blue with green Stripe Green Green with brown Stripe Sankyu- 3rd Degree Brown Nikyu- 2nd Degree Brown Ikkyu- 1st Degree Brown Shodan- 1st Degree Black
Both Czech and Slovak (well, it was one country once) Goju-ryu federations use the following order: beginner - white 8th kyu - white with yellow stripes at the end 7th kyu - yellow 6th kyu - yellow with orange/red stripes at the end 5th kyu - orange 4th kyu - green 3rd kyu - blue 2nd and 1st kyu - brown 1st dan and above - black
I took an Okinawan style in high school and our system was: White Yellow Orange Purple Green Blue Brown Black. But we also had an intermediate rank between each belt rank except for white, that consisted of a central black strip running lengthwise down the center of the belt. So it would be white, yellow, yellow/black, orange, orange/black, etc.
I have shotokan karate style my karate belt is White Yellow Orange Red Green Blue Purple Brown belt first Brown belt second Brown belt third Black belt Iam blue belt
I earned my 1st degree black belt (1st Dan) in Karazenpo Karate; our belt order: white, yellow, orange, blue, purple, green, brown, black. Beginning with blue, you could earn stripes at the end of the belt, but we called them degrees. Each belt (blue to brown) could have 4 stripes. You could leap-frog degrees, depending on your test performance. Green could be given small teaching responsibilities within a class in the dojo; brown was considered a junior instructor and could be charged with instructing a small group or even the whole class for a few minutes at a time; the sifus were the black belts, with authority based on dan levels. It was a wonderful experience. I have continued training with one of my original sifus, but he is eclectic, drawing from Silat, Hapkido, Sabeel Combatives, Judo, and others, so I am learning a wide variety of skills. 🙏🏼🧡
I train at a Shudokan dojo in Washington State (currently Go kyu). Our adult belt system is: White - Yellow - Hachi kyu Blue - Shichi kyu Orange - Roku kyu Purple - Go kyu Green - Yon kyu Brown - San kyu Brown w/black stripe - Ni kyu Red w/ black stripe - Ichi kyu Black - Dan ranks Our youth program has “advanced”ranks denoted by a black stripe for white-green belts. Advanced San kyu is brown with a white stripe, Advanced Ni kyu is brown with a red stripe, and Advanced Ichi kyu is black with a red stripe.
@@KarateDojowaKu @Karate Dojo waKu Different enough that I would have not been able to guess at all. 1st of all, is there no 5-10 Kyu? Are beginner White Belt Students not considered 10th Kyu yet? Why are there different colors for each Kyu? Does that mean you have to test 4 times to go from 4th Kyu to 3rd Kyu? There are 3 browns and 2 greens? And finally, the one you brought up to, gray? I don't have anything against the color gray, just surprised.
My club’s colour system is: White Orange Red Yellow Green Purple Purple-White stripe (my current belt) Brown Brown-White stripe Brown-Double White stripe Black (1st Dan and above).
Here in our federation the belt color order is: White > Yellow > Red > Orange > Green > Purple > Brown > Black (10 dan). Some years ago they included a blue belt before the yellow for kids up to 6 years old that is not able to perform the heian shodan (they cant memorize the kyodos). So, in the exam they perform kihon and sanbon kumite. But I'm still a white belt and I will take my exam for yellow belt in May. =)
My club Fudokan Shotokan karate Academy of Ireland 1 Dan black 1kyu brown 2kyu brown 3kyu brown 4kyu blue 5kuy blue 6kyu green 7kyu orange 8kyu yellow 9kyu white 10kyu beginner (beginner level takes over 6 months to complete then an exam. Once you are a white belt there are 2 exams each year and you are only allowed to take them if our coach says we are ready. It takes about 6 years to get a black belt and you have to be a teenager or older to test for it.)
My shotokan club has: 10th kyu: white belt 9th kyu: orange 8th kyu: red 7th kyu: yellow 6th kyu: green 5th kyu: purple 4th kyu: purple with one white stripe 3rd kyu: brown 2nd kyu (my belt rank): brown with one white stripe 1st kyu: brown with two white stripes 1st-10th Dan: black This is pretty standard for shotokan in England, at least with the clubs I’ve looked at throughout.
Hi! I'm from Venezuela and I practice karate shotokan, where I practice the belts order is white>light blue>yellow>orange>purple>green>blue>brown>black
Years ago, I studied a style of Karate called U.S.A. Goju. This style was a derivative of an Okinawan style called Goju-ryu. The U.S.A. Goju belt system consisted of 5 colors. White, green, purple, brown and black. There were promotions with each color belt by adding a strip of tape on the tip of your current belt in the color of the next expected belt to achieve. For instance, a promotion while wearing your white belt would be a green strip of tape on the tip of your white belt. There would be two more promotions as a white belt, each time adding an additional strip of tape to your white belt, for a total of three green strips of tape on your belt. The green strips of tape represented the next belt color you were studying to attain, which in this case would be the green belt. This method of promotion continued throughout your practice from belt to belt. From white belt to black belt, it usually took 4 to 5 years of study in U.S.A. Goju.
I practised aikido (in France) and the colours were white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, black. There was also intermediate belts: yellow with a white line in the middle, orange with a white line, etc, but they weren't always used if I remember well.
Love your vids brother ,always excellent and informative 🙏⛩️😉 I was a member of the JKA (Japan Karate Association) doing traditional Shotokan for years when younger . Our belts went in the following order but we're nowhere near as easy as today's standards to achieve : White Yellow Orange Green Purple Brown Brown /single white stripe Black (Dan etc) Getting to Black was a lot more than just 3 years and we didn't have 6 year Olds wearing them most definitely 🙏 Ironically I now sell Samurai armour for a living and realised my old sensei's dreams by calling him up 20 years later and suiting him up in a nice Yoroi to work with me at a demonstration lol. Cheers from Australia, keep up the awese content 🤘
I went to an American-style karate dojo when I was in late high school, we had 8 kyu. It went: 8th kyu: White 7th kyu: Yellow 6th kyu: Green (as far as I actually got before transferring to a different club in college) 5th kyu: Blue (I was eligible to test for this but I missed the test date) 4th kyu: Purple 3th kyu: Brown 2nd kyu: Brown 1st kyu: Brown Dan: Black Though there are pics of my old shihan wearing a belt that alternates between white and red, I've seen a lot of high-ranking yudansha (like 7th dan and above) in American karate styles wear that. I had a friend whose Taekwondo organization had a military camo belt.
Let’s see white, yellow green, purple, brown, & black when I first started out. Then orange & blue were added in between yellow & green later. I’m a black belt now. Haven’t been pushing for higher Dan levels because of other matters, but I’m just happy being a black belt 🥋 . 😊
In my dodjo we have White 10 kyu White with a black line 9 kyu White whit two black lines 8 kyu Yellow 7 kyu Orange/red 6 kyu Green 5 kyu Blue 4 kyu Brown 3 kyu Brown whit a black line 2 kyu Brown whit two black lines 1 kyu Black 10 dan After black you still have your black belt but after black we are using Dan instead of kyu
Under Ryukyu Kempo (Ryute) when I started in 1980 it was White (10 & 9 Kyu), Yellow (8 & 7 Kyu), Green (6 & 5 Kyu), Purple (4 & 3 Kyu) Brown (2 & 1 Kyu) then Black. When we transition Kyu levels within a belt then my Shihan would wrap a bit of tape on our Obi (next belt level) to signify we were halfway to our next belt. So White with a yellow stripe would be 9 Kyu ... and so on!
I'm sotokan in bangladesh. My belt colour order is white yellow orange red green blue purple brown 1 brown 2 black I think we have the most belt colour :)
KUGB Shotokan - I'm a Yon Dan black belt, we have 9 colours for the Kyu grade system: white, orange, red, yellow, green, purple, purple & white, brown, brown & white, brown and white 2 stripes.
We are American Fushin Ryu dojo and we go white,yellow,green/white stripe, green, blue/white stripe, blue, purple/white, purple, brown, the starts black/green and up to black. We are purple belts. I don’t know what Don that is but we’ve been in for 2 years about. I enjoy your videos :) thank you!
I liked the video, but it should've at least mentioned Kano (Judo) whom established the color belt system. In my organization Traditional TKD (ITF): - white, white w/yellow - yellow, yellow w/green stripe - green, green w/blue stripe - blue, blue w/red stripe - red, red w/one stripe and 2 stripes - black, 1, 2, 3, etc dans I'm a 3rd Dan.
Kano did not introduce the colored system, he only introduced White and Black. The colored system was introduced by Mikinosuke Kawaishi in 1937. Kano passed away in 1938 having never approved of the colored belt system.
Brown belt for 1st kyu at Shotokan Ryu Kase Ha. The order is: White for beginners, 5th kyu yellow, 4th kyu orange, 3th kyu green, 2nd kyu blue and 1st kyu brown. Black for dan grades.
Most interesting, thank you very much! I earned my 1st Kyu in 1977 according to exactly this 5-grade Kyu hierarchy, applied by the German organization DJB-SeKa, which transformed later into DKU and then-DKV. Well, organized Karate in German enjoyed quite a diverse development since the foundation of rhe first national Karate organization in 1957, true to the old proverb “one German, one association, two Germans = president + treasurer, 3 Germans = 2 associations … etc.. (Japan seems to be not so very different, in Shotokan at least since the demise of Nakayama Masatoshi) Nowadays DKV stipulates 8 Kyu grades. I admit that Shotokan Karate now and then is different in certain aspects, but I hardly see the need for the additional Kyu grades. Might there be a potential relationship between the number of grades and economics, i.e. the justification for more graduation fees? Seems as if many schools on a global scale adhere to this logic …
I was in the Winged Dragon Karate Club in Arnold, Maryland. The order was white, yellow, purple, green, blue, brown and black. My sons are in Kickstart Karate which is a system developed by Chuck Norris as an alternative to standard physical education classes in school. It’s order of belts is white, yellow, purple, green, blue, red / black and black.
My Dojo follows the JKA (Japan Karate Association) and the belt colors are as follows: 10. Kyu: any kind of string 9. Kyu: White 8. Kyu: Yellow 7. Kyu: Orange 6. Kyu: Green 5./4. Kyu: Purple or Blue 3.-1. Kyu: Brown 1.-10. Dan: Black without any stripes
Very informational video! Thank you! I really enjoy your channel, and when opportunity arises, I would love to come back to learning Karate self-defence techniques and philosophical principles. Personally, I would prefer to stay as a white belt until (if ever) I am worthy of a black belt.
Where are you located George? In Shotokan Karate of America, we only have 3 colors, White, Brown & Black. We are the oldest Karate organization in the U.S. and have affiliates world wide. Let me know where you live and I’ll see if there is a Dojo in your area. Good Luck, Don
@@donelmore2540 Hi Don, thank you for reaching out! I live in Orange County, CA, and I would be comfortable driving to a dojo within this geographic area.
I trained from ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Federation), in India. Our belt order was: 10th Kyu- White Belt 9th Kyu- Yellow Belt 8th Kyu- Orange Belt 7th Kyu- Green Belt 6th Kyu- Blue Belt 5th Kyu- Purple Belt 4th Kyu- Purple-Stripe Belt Brown Belt 3rd Kyu Brown Belt 2nd Kyu Brown Belt 1st Kyu 1st Dan Black Belt. I am 4th Kyu Purple-Stripe.
Here is an interesting point... in some traditional "Kung Fu" Schools ( kwoons ) they start you as a beginner and then years later they come up to you and tell you to start teaching. That... is their ranking system 😀.
All the colors are for keeping students motivated to achieve another belt. There is pride that goes with achieving those belts. 1/2 the belt test (my experience anyway, don't know if you've had that experience) is just surviving the belt test. Not giving up and not passing out. Well the first 2-3 belts anyway, because you are so inefficient in how you move. I'll never forget the first couple test. YOU GET EXTRA POINTS FOR NOT GIVING UP AND PUSHING YOURSELF. Anyway, all belts of any color deserve respect. white yellow orange green blue purple purple black strip brown white strip brown solid brown black strip black black with various tips red/white etc etc
That was very interesting, in Brazil, more specifically in the state of São Paulo by FPKT (Federação Paulista de Karate-do Tradicional) the order is: (kyu) 10º - White 9º - Yellow 8º - Orange 7º - Green 6º - Cyan 5º - Purple 4º - Blue 3º - Brown 2º - Brown 1º - Brown (Dan) Black
In my country Slovenia, the sequence of color bands is as follows. I am learning JKA Shotokan Karate. I am currently at level 4 KYU - Blue Belt. I will be taking the 3 KYU brown belt exam soon. 9th -kyu - white 8th kyu - yellow 7th kyu - orange 6th kyu - green 5th kyu - purpple 4th kyu - blue 3th /2nd / 1st kyu - brown 1 Dan - black
Very interesting to see the different ways the different systems use the belts. In our Dojo, we are similar to the Okinawan style because the base of our Dojo is Shirin Ryu, but it's been blended with other styles over the years. We have 12 Kyus (the second color is a stripe on the belt): White - Beginner, no Kyu Orange - 12th Kyu Purple-White - 11th Kyu Purple - 10th Kyu Green-White - 9th Kyu Green - 8th Kyu Green-Black - 7th Kyu Blue-White - 6th Kyu Blue - 5th Kyu Blue-Black - 4th Kyu Brown-White or Red-White - 3rd Kyu (those under 16 receive Red belts) Brown or Red - 2nd Kyu Brown-Black or Red Black - 1st Kyu Black or Black-White - Shodan (those under 16 receive the Black belt with a White stripe). I'm not actually sure when/where we start separating or differentiating the Black Belts, but I think it is at 3rd Dan and we start adding Red stripes to the belt.
Here in Brazil, Shotokan Karate has another colors order. White - Mu Kyu Yellow - 6th Kyu Red - 5th Kyu Orange - 4th Kyu Green - 3rd Kyu Purple - 2nd Kyu Brown - 1st Kyu Black - 1st to 10th Dan I'm a brown belt right now... after many years... I still have a lot to learn :)
Practitioner for over 50 years. Studied various styles. Attained Godan or higher in two of them. With your mention of white, brown, black, in MOST Japanese, Okinawan and Korean forms of MA, green was added between white and brown, for the same reason brown was eventually added - with green designating and "intermediate" student. Now quite and advanced student, but definitely not a pure novice. My two main styles are massively different in kyu belt colors and one even includes a rarity almost never seen in a Japanese or Okinawan style/ Koto Ryu: (note: the stripes mentioned are not mandatory, yet most students have a tendency of using them. Additionally, the stripes are generally the color of the next color belt to be achieved, yet some schools may use black stripes) 10th kyu: white 9: white with a single (usually green) stripe at each end 8: white with 2 stripes at each end 7: white with 3 stripes at each end 6: green with 1 (usually brown) stripe at each end. 5: green with 2 stripes at each end 4: green with 3 stripes at each end 3: brown with a (usually black) stripe at each end 2: brown with 2 stripes at each end 1: brown with 3 stripes at each end I personally love the Koto Ryu belt system, It's simple, straight forward and incurs zero confusion. Goshin Do Goju Ryu: (Please make note of the uncommon order AND the use of a red belt in the kyu ranks - something almost never seen in other type of goju ryu schools) Also note, in some schools, I have seen the 3rd to 6th kyu belts arranged slightly different, with most common variation being: green blue purple ... thus making a rainbow in a progression from light to dark! I generally may see this variation in the schools with a higher ratio of child to adult students. 15 adults and 50 kids in the school? It's generally following the rainbow variation in the ordering of colors. 8 & 9: White 7: Yellow 6: Orange 5: Purple 4: Green 3: Blue 2: Red 1: Brown Admittedly, I can see the beauty of student/teacher bond behind this belt color system - even the inclusion of the red belt - when examined in context. When you consider this school does not charge a fee for belt tests - think of it this way, "A student gives his or her dedication and loyalty to the school and the instructor. What does it say about the loyalty of instructor who would charge a student for an afternoon of their time once or twice a year?" As for the colors and the need for all those colors. Consider, the student. To him or her, it's a big deal. The student is ready for the next step. Do you want to reward him or her with a piece of tape?
I was in the American Taekwondo Association (A.T.A.) in the late 80's and early 1990's. The organization added new belt colors when I joined, and we also had a striping system for higher level belts. It was (1) White (2) Orange (3) Yellow (4) Camouflage (5) Green (6) Purple (7) Blue w/ 1-3 stripes (7) Brown w/ 1-3 stripes (8) Red w/ 1-3 stripes (8) First Degree Black Belt. Of course there are several degrees above the lowest black belt. My master was a 6th degree black belt at the time, and earned his 7th degree when I left.
In Germany I know commonly the following system: 9. Kyu: white - in fact that the white belt is normally included, when you buy your Do-Gi, you often get after your examination yellow strips to your belt. 8. Kyu: yellow 7. Kyu: orange 6. Kyu: green 5. Kyu: blue (in other organizations also violett) 4. Kyu: blue (Violett) 3. Kyu: brown 2. Kyu: brown 1. Kyu: brown Sometimes depending on your club, you get coloured stripes of the next level to your belt. But in sum you have to conduct 9 examinations as well. 1. Dan: black
Oss! In Brazilian Shotokan Karate it's used as follows: White (Mukyu) Yellow (6º Kyu) Red (5° kyu) Orange (4º Kyu) Green (3º Kyu) Purple (2º Kyu) Brown (1°Kyu) Black (1º - 10º Dan) Brazilian Kyokushinkaikan: White (Mukyu) Orange (9° kyu) Blue (8° - 7° kyu) Yellow (6° - 5° kyu) Green (4° - 3° kyu) Brown (2° - 1° kyu) Black (1° - 10° Dan)
Shito-Ryu Shukokai: White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown+1, Brown+2, Brown+3, Black (Shodan-Ho), 1st Dan Black with name embroidered. (Brown+ indicates the number of black stripes to differentiate the Kyu grade)
ours is: 10th Kyu - White 9th Kyu - Yellow 8th Kyu - Yellow 2 (it has two stripes at the corner of the belt) 7th Kyu - Yellow 3 6th Kyu - Orange 5th Kyu - Green 4th Kyu - Blue 3rd Kyu - Brown 2nd Kyu - Brown 2 1st Kyu -Brown 3 And then black.. tho im not sure abt 3rd, 2nd, 1st kyu lol
I am glad you said that there is no correct order. Good information. I use colours as a measure for student growth and technique. It also helps me with how much information to give. Like an ongoing story you can add too.
Our colour belt order is: Beginner - White 10 - 9Kyu - White with Yellow tip 9 - 8Kyu - Yellow 8 - 7th - Yellow with Orange tip 7 - 6th - Green 6 - 5th - Blue 5 - 4th - Red 4 - 3rd - Brown 3rd - 2nd - Brown with Black tip 2nd - 1st - Brown with two Black Tips 1st to Shodan-Ho - Black All Dan levels are then Black with unique Kanji. Our Sempi or Sensei's assistants wear a Black belt with a long white centre stripe but they can be any belt level above Green I think; it depends on their knowledge and there's a Sempi training course they need to go through. There's no unique belt for Kyu with a tip, they just apply a coloured stripe of electrical tape to the end of the belt) I am currently 3rd Kyu.
I've recently began studying Wado-Ryu karate in the UK. Our belt ranks are: Ungraded - White 8th Kyu - Red 7th Kyu - Yellow 6th Kyu - Orange 5th Kyu - Green 4th Kyu - Blue 3rd Kyu - Purple 2nd Kyu - Brown 1st Kyu - Brown with 2 gold tags
I am currently a 1st Dan black belt in ITF style Tae Kwon Do. Our school has the following 10th and 9th Gup - White 7th and 8th - Yellow 5th and 6th - Green 3rd and 4th - Purple 1st and 2nd - Brown Probationary black belt. (a rank between the colored ranks and 1st Dan, usually the rank is held for a minimum of 6 months to about a year. After 1st Dan, we do testing every year for points. Though there is no marking on the belt to show points earned. In my previous organization, Tang Soo Do, it was White, Orange, Green, Red and Black, with 3 levels of Green and 4 levels of red, showed by stripes on the belt.
My style from Okinawa. My sensei is Onaga Yusuke. So we have white, yellow, orange, blue, purple, green, brown and black. Thank you

JSKA Shiai Karate Club, Stockholm,Sweden. Belt system, from beginner to master: White (not yet graded), Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown (3, 2 and 1st Kyu), Black (1-10 Dan). Children under the age of 13 also have intermediate colored belt levels breaking each belt into two (one without and one with, a stripe). My current level: 1st Kyu. I thus wear a brown belt.
Shodan in Isshinryu, we use 6 belts in our dojo 10 Kyu- white belt 9 Kyu- yellow belt 8 Kyu- orange belt 7 Kyu- orange belt with green stripe 6 Kyu- green belt, 5 kyu adds a brown stripe, 4 kyu adds a second brown stripe 3 Kyu- brown belt, 2 kyu adds a black stripe, 1 kyu adds a second black stripe We add our stripes at the tip of our belts. Younger students who complete a junior black belt will retain a black throughout each belt rank until they reach an adult level Black belt 1 -3 Dan- Black belt 4 Dan- alternating black and red belt 5 Dan- White on top and red on bottom belt 6 Dan- red on top and white on bottom belt 7-8 Dan- alternating red and white belt 9-10 Dan- solid red belt Blacks belts reserve the ability to remain in a solid black belt if they choose.
In the karate dojo I go to the belts are: White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Blue-Stripe, Purple, Purple-Stripe, Brown, Brown-Stripe, and Black. The reason for not having a red belt is because once you get to Yellow Belt in a week or so you get a red gi. When you get to brown belt you get a black gi. And when you first start with a white belt you get a white gi until you get a stripe and a yellow belt.
If you go by the belt order implemented by Kano Jigoru it's white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, black, red/white(6th Dan to 8th Dan) and red (10th) Dan. In my old Shotokan organisation it was white, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, purple/white stripe, brown, brown/ 1 white stripe, brown/ 2 white stripes, black from 1st to 10th Dan.
I come from Kenpo Karate (Ed Parker, Nick Cerio, etc.) White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Blue with Stripe, Green, Green with Stripe, Brown, 1, 2, 3 stripes, Black up to 10th degree. I now train BJJ, White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black. Before Black, each belt has 4 stripes.
our karate style is shorin ryu seibukan and i started as a white belt, but now everyone starts with pre-white belt - white belt - yellow - green - blue - purple - brown 4,3,2,1 - then black
We have as Czech association of traditional karate those belts: White - 9 kyu (beginner) Yellow - 8 kyu Orange - 7 kyu Green - 6 kyu (where I’m at) Blue - 5 kyu , 4 kyu Brown - 3-1 kyu Black - 1-9 dan
I was in TKD the belt system for me was White, solid Yellow,Yellow (Senior),Solid Orange ,Orange (Senior),solid Green, Green (Senior) Solid Purple ,Purple (Senior) , Solid Blue,Blue (Senior),Solid Brown ,Brown (Senior) ,Solid Red ,Red (Senior) and finally 1st Dan black. The Senior belts have black stripes down the middle. I’m a Black Belt 1st Dan
in belgium the collors are white,half yellow,full yellow,half orange,full orange,half green,full green,half bleu,full bleu,brown for 321 kyus and black
In the Chidokan system of the Shotokan style. Traditionally, 8th Kyu is White, 7th Kyu is one green stripe on white, 6th Kyu is 2 green stripes on white. These are beginner levels. 5th Kyu is Green, 4th Kyu is Purple. These are intermediate Kyu grades . Then 3rd Kyu is brown, 2nd Kyu is 1 black stripe on brown, 1st Kyu is 2 black stripes on brown. At your next grading you reach Shurio, and wear a white belt again. So you have passed all your Basic training, and then concentrate on your kata , Bunkai and Jiyu Kumite. At you Shodan Grading. The panel expects that you are prepared for anything, and you will be asked to preform whatever kata they choose, and also be examined on your Bunkai knowledge and Free style Full contact sparing. This is the shortest grading I ever had! Our system up until 1983 had only 5 Dan Grades, and only Shodan, Nidan and Sandan were tested. After 1983 we adopted the new standard of 10 Dan grades. イエスはあなたを祝福します
In Belgium they migrated from an older system where you had white, blue, brown and black. Where white had red and then black stripes before moving onto blue which is 5th kyu. Now they have the typical system with white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black. The reason was that children could see their progress more with the colored belts. I did study shotokan from 7 to 12 years old and stopped at 6th kyu. Now at 41 I'm picking it up again because my children are starting now at ages 9 and 10.

In Portugal, "my" federation uses White, Yellow, Orange, Green (each is currently mine), Blue, Brown and Black. Also, for under-14 yo, you have sub-levels of belts with both colours, like a transition level. Some other independent associations also use Red, but while in others Red is right after Yellow, in other the Red is before Black.
I'm studying Shorin Ryu in NY, Long Island specifically. I'm currently 9th kyu, which is a yellow belt at my dojo. Our belts are as follows: White Yellow Orange Blue Jr. Green Green Jr. Purple Purple Jr. Brown Brown Black
The same colors for kiokushinkai. Shotokan belts are different in different organizations. In our club - white-red-orange-yellow-green- blue-purple-brown-brown-brown
My school's system is as follows: Beginner (6th kyu) - white 5th kyu - yellow 4th kyu - orange 3rd kyu - green 2nd kyu - blue (my current level) 1st kyu - brown 1st to 8th dan - black
In my Dojo in Italy the belts were: White White-yellow Yellow Yellow-orange Orange Orange-green Green Green-blue Blue Blue-brown Brown Brown-black Black And from the 6th Dan a red-white belt. Legends tell that a 10th Dan wears a totally red one but i’ve never seen
Well, only since you asked. At our dojo here in Okinawa, the adults still do just as you describe: white, brown, black. Though the brown is optional, most opt to take it after wearing white for several years. In the same dojo, the kids belts go like this: white, yellow, blue, green, brown, black/white stripe, black. I never asked, but I feel the extra belt is there to lengthen the time before black belt (just my guess). Adults can choose to wear the colored belts but I think it's pretty rare for them to do so.
Fascinating. I never saw belts in that type of order. Ours are White, White with Yellow Stripe, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, 3 levels of Brown and then Black. Oss. Master K, MA
I do GKR Karate (Go-Kan-Ryu), which is a mixture between Goju and Shotokan karate styles. What is your karate belt color?
i do not have belt because i dont do karate but watch videos
Oos I am a blue belt
But I am basically level 9.Cause we have strips on each belt.Like blue 1(strips) and full blue (no strips).
Purple with red stripes sensei... 4th kyu..
We have white till we get brown (which I have, doing Wado Kai). Of course black is after that :-)
Very interesting! In Germany we have this system: beginner white, 8 kyu yellow, 7 kyu orange, 6 kyu green, 5 kyu light blue, 4 kyu dark blue, 3 kyu brown, 2 kyu brown, 1 kyu brown, then 1 Dan und above black
I see! Interesting!
But still it depends on the dojo/style: At my fist we had one times blue and then two times violet
Its like that here too
I am san kyu. Brown in our system. I've always liked the legend of how the belt color system started. White like new snow. Then yellow as if seeing the sun. Green after rolling in the grass. Brown after digging in the dirt. Finally black when the knowledge cannot be washed away.
And very worn black belt is starting to look white....
I see! I guess there are a lot more diversity seeing everyone's comment too!
Thank you.😮
My belt colour order is:
White
Yellow
Orange
Green
Blue
Brown
Black.
So before they reach for example Orange they must go through White with orange stripe, Orange with white stripe, and then finally a fully orange.
wow mixtures!!! Interesting!!
@@teddie124 I'm more used to that system too!
Same system, also as @Teddie124
I am 3rd Dan of Shotokan Karate in Brazil and we had huge JKA influence due lots of Karate instructors sent from Japan to Brazil by Nakayama sensei on the 50's period. The belt color classification today is based on 7 steps of kyu rank from 7 to 1 as following sequency: White, yellow, red, orange, green, purple, brown after starts Dan rank from 1 to 10 with Black color only.
In JKS Shotokan Karate that I practice in Sweden, we have:
10 kyu White, 9 kyu Red, 8 kyu Orange, 7 kyu Yellow, 6 kyu Green, 5 -4 kyu Blue, 3-2-1 kyu Brown, 1 Dan upwards Black.
I myself is 55 years of age and found my way back to karate after 30 years, now training for the same Sensei I had back then.
I'm now at 4 kyu hoping to go to shodan before I turn 60.
I see! Thanks for sharing, and good luck to you!
4 Kyu Green belt Kyokushin in Sweden, same system here for Kyokushin as in your video. Love your videos keep it up!
Red belt should always be last. It's weird seeing it with the others.

Back in my day, living in Havant when I learned Shotokan Karate as a child I remember the belt colour grading as follows:
1) White
2) Red
3) Yellow
4) Orange
5) Green
6) Blue (the colour I remained on due to not completing my training, having moved house)
7) Purple
8) Brown

9th / 8th kyu - white
7th kyu - yellow
6th kyu - orange
5th kyu - green
4th kyu - blue

Both Czech and Slovak (well, it was one country once) Goju-ryu federations use the following order:
beginner - white
8th kyu - white with yellow stripes at the end
7th kyu - yellow
6th kyu - yellow with orange/red stripes at the end
5th kyu - orange
4th kyu - green

2nd and 1st kyu - brown
1st dan and above - black
I took an Okinawan style in high school and our system was:
White
Yellow
Orange
Purple
Green
Blue
Brown
Black.
But we also had an intermediate rank between each belt rank except for white, that consisted of a central black strip running lengthwise down the center of the belt. So it would be white, yellow, yellow/black, orange, orange/black, etc.
I have shotokan karate style my karate belt is
White
Yellow
Orange
Red
Green
Blue
Purple
Brown belt first
Brown belt second
Brown belt third
Black belt
Iam blue belt
That’s the order of Kenpo Karate as well.
Our adult belt system is:
White -
Yellow - Hachi kyu
Blue - Shichi kyu
Orange - Roku kyu
Purple - Go kyu
Green - Yon kyu
Brown - San kyu
Brown w/black stripe - Ni kyu
Red w/ black stripe - Ichi kyu
Black - Dan ranks
Our youth program has “advanced”ranks denoted by a black stripe for white-green belts. Advanced San kyu is brown with a white stripe, Advanced Ni kyu is brown with a red stripe, and Advanced Ichi kyu is black with a red stripe.
The JKF belt order was different than I expected.
How different were they?
@@KarateDojowaKu @Karate Dojo waKu Different enough that I would have not been able to guess at all. 1st of all, is there no 5-10 Kyu? Are beginner White Belt Students not considered 10th Kyu yet? Why are there different colors for each Kyu? Does that mean you have to test 4 times to go from 4th Kyu to 3rd Kyu? There are 3 browns and 2 greens? And finally, the one you brought up to, gray? I don't have anything against the color gray, just surprised.
My club’s colour system is:

@@KarateDojowaKu at first it was a bit of a “double take” moment when I learnt that orange comes after white instead of yellow lol.
Here in our federation the belt color order is:

Some years ago they included a blue belt before the yellow for kids up to 6 years old that is not able to perform the heian shodan (they cant memorize the kyodos). So, in the exam they perform kihon and sanbon kumite.

Goju.
I'm currently a Shodan 1st Dan in Goju Ryu.
Niceee!!!!

I practised aikido (in France) and the colours were white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, black. There was also intermediate belts: yellow with a white line in the middle, orange with a white line, etc, but they weren't always used if I remember well.
Love your vids brother ,always excellent and informative 🙏⛩️😉
I was a member of the JKA (Japan Karate Association) doing traditional Shotokan for years when younger .
Our belts went in the following order but we're nowhere near as easy as today's standards to achieve :
White
Yellow
Orange
Green
Purple
Brown
Brown /single white stripe
Black
(Dan etc)
Getting to Black was a lot more than just 3 years and we didn't have 6 year Olds wearing them most definitely 🙏
Ironically
I now sell Samurai armour for a living and realised my old sensei's dreams by calling him up 20 years later and suiting him up in a nice Yoroi to work with me at a demonstration lol.
Cheers from Australia, keep up the awese content 🤘
I went to an American-style karate dojo when I was in late high school, we had 8 kyu.
It went:
8th kyu: White
7th kyu: Yellow
6th kyu: Green (as far as I actually got before transferring to a different club in college)
5th kyu: Blue (I was eligible to test for this but I missed the test date)
4th kyu: Purple
3th kyu: Brown
2nd kyu: Brown
1st kyu: Brown
Dan: Black
Though there are pics of my old shihan wearing a belt that alternates between white and red, I've seen a lot of high-ranking yudansha (like 7th dan and above) in American karate styles wear that.

(Japan seems to be not so very different, in Shotokan at least since the demise of Nakayama Masatoshi)
Nowadays DKV stipulates 8 Kyu grades. I admit that Shotokan Karate now and then is different in certain aspects, but I hardly see the need for the additional Kyu grades. Might there be a potential relationship between the number of grades and economics, i.e. the justification for more graduation fees? Seems as if many schools on a global scale adhere to this logic …
Now I'm in green belt sir 😀
Nice!

Schools ( kwoons ) they start you as a beginner and then years later they come up to you and tell you to start teaching. That... is their ranking system 😀.

Very interesting to see the different ways the different systems use the belts. In our Dojo, we are similar to the Okinawan style because the base of our Dojo is Shirin Ryu, but it's been blended with other styles over the years. We have 12 Kyus (the second color is a stripe on the belt):
White - Beginner, no Kyu
Orange - 12th Kyu
Purple-White - 11th Kyu
Purple - 10th Kyu
Green-White - 9th Kyu
Green - 8th Kyu
Green-Black - 7th Kyu
Blue-White - 6th Kyu
Blue - 5th Kyu
Blue-Black - 4th Kyu
Brown-White or Red-White - 3rd Kyu (those under 16 receive Red belts)
Brown or Red - 2nd Kyu
Brown-Black or Red Black - 1st Kyu
Black or Black-White - Shodan (those under 16 receive the Black belt with a White stripe).
I'm not actually sure when/where we start separating or differentiating the Black Belts, but I think it is at 3rd Dan and we start adding Red stripes to the belt.
I am currently 3rd Kyu, so is my 11 year-old son, and my 14 year-old-daughter is a 2nd Kyu
Wow they are progression is amazing! Keep it up :)
Here in Brazil, Shotokan Karate has another colors order.
White - Mu Kyu
Yellow - 6th Kyu
Red - 5th Kyu
Orange - 4th Kyu
Green - 3rd Kyu
Purple - 2nd Kyu
Brown - 1st Kyu
Black - 1st to 10th Dan
I'm a brown belt right now... after many years... I still have a lot to learn :)
For me,
White
Yellow
Orange
Green
Blue
Purple
Brown
Red
Black
And for Ultra Grandmasters, they can get GOLD Belts
Practitioner for over 50 years. Studied various styles. Attained Godan or higher in two of them. With your mention of white, brown, black, in MOST Japanese, Okinawan and Korean forms of MA, green was added between white and brown, for the same reason brown was eventually added - with green designating and "intermediate" student. Now quite and advanced student, but definitely not a pure novice.
My two main styles are massively different in kyu belt colors and one even includes a rarity almost never seen in a Japanese or Okinawan style/
Koto Ryu: (note: the stripes mentioned are not mandatory, yet most students have a tendency of using them. Additionally, the stripes are generally the color of the next color belt to be achieved, yet some schools may use black stripes)
10th kyu: white
9: white with a single (usually green) stripe at each end
8: white with 2 stripes at each end
7: white with 3 stripes at each end
6: green with 1 (usually brown) stripe at each end.
5: green with 2 stripes at each end
4: green with 3 stripes at each end
3: brown with a (usually black) stripe at each end
2: brown with 2 stripes at each end
1: brown with 3 stripes at each end
I personally love the Koto Ryu belt system, It's simple, straight forward and incurs zero confusion.
8 & 9: White
7: Yellow
6: Orange
5: Purple
4: Green
3: Blue
2: Red
1: Brown
Admittedly, I can see the beauty of student/teacher bond behind this belt color system - even the inclusion of the red belt - when examined in context.
In Germany I know commonly the following system:
9. Kyu: white - in fact that the white belt is normally included, when you buy your Do-Gi, you often get after your examination yellow strips to your belt.
8. Kyu: yellow
7. Kyu: orange
6. Kyu: green
5. Kyu: blue (in other organizations also violett)
4. Kyu: blue (Violett)
3. Kyu: brown
2. Kyu: brown
1. Kyu: brown
Sometimes depending on your club, you get coloured stripes of the next level to your belt. But in sum you have to conduct 9 examinations as well.
1. Dan: black
When I started Goju-Ryu in the UK many years ago. we had soooo many gradings before we earned our black belt. 16 total.
Me too we had colour tips to indicate we are worthy of getting an upgrade in belt.
Oss!
In Brazilian Shotokan Karate it's used as follows:
White (Mukyu)
Yellow (6º Kyu)
Red (5° kyu)
Orange (4º Kyu)
Green (3º Kyu)
Purple (2º Kyu)
Brown (1°Kyu)
Black (1º - 10º Dan)
Brazilian Kyokushinkaikan:
White (Mukyu)
Orange (9° kyu)
Blue (8° - 7° kyu)
Yellow (6° - 5° kyu)
Green (4° - 3° kyu)
Brown (2° - 1° kyu)
Black (1° - 10° Dan)
Shito-Ryu Shukokai: White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown+1, Brown+2, Brown+3, Black (Shodan-Ho), 1st Dan Black with name embroidered. (Brown+ indicates the number of black stripes to differentiate the Kyu grade)
ours is:
10th Kyu - White
9th Kyu - Yellow
8th Kyu - Yellow 2 (it has two stripes at the corner of the belt)
7th Kyu - Yellow 3
6th Kyu - Orange
5th Kyu - Green
4th Kyu - Blue
3rd Kyu - Brown
2nd Kyu - Brown 2
1st Kyu -Brown 3
And then black.. tho im not sure abt 3rd, 2nd, 1st kyu lol
I am glad you said that there is no correct order. Good information. I use colours as a measure for student growth and technique. It also helps me with how much information to give. Like an ongoing story you can add too.
Our colour belt order is:
Beginner - White
10 - 9Kyu - White with Yellow tip
9 - 8Kyu - Yellow
8 - 7th - Yellow with Orange tip
7 - 6th - Green
6 - 5th - Blue
5 - 4th - Red
4 - 3rd - Brown
3rd - 2nd - Brown with Black tip
2nd - 1st - Brown with two Black Tips
1st to Shodan-Ho - Black
All Dan levels are then Black with unique Kanji.
I see! You're almost there!
That’s the same for the karate club I go to I hardly see any other people that also have that belt order
I've recently began studying Wado-Ryu karate in the UK. Our belt ranks are:
Ungraded - White
8th Kyu - Red
7th Kyu - Yellow
6th Kyu - Orange
5th Kyu - Green
4th Kyu - Blue
3rd Kyu - Purple
2nd Kyu - Brown
1st Kyu - Brown with 2 gold tags
I am currently a 1st Dan black belt in ITF style Tae Kwon Do. Our school has the following
10th and 9th Gup - White
7th and 8th - Yellow
5th and 6th - Green
3rd and 4th - Purple
1st and 2nd - Brown
Probationary black belt.
Belt system, from beginner to master:
White (not yet graded), Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown (3, 2 and 1st Kyu), Black (1-10 Dan).
Children under the age of 13 also have intermediate colored belt levels breaking each belt into two (one without and one with, a stripe).
My current level: 1st Kyu. I thus wear a brown belt.
I Practice Shotokan in the organization JKS in Sweden, our belt colors are:
White
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Blue 2
Brown
Brown 2
Brown 3
Black 1-9
Shodan in Isshinryu, we use 6 belts in our dojo
10 Kyu- white belt
9 Kyu- yellow belt
8 Kyu- orange belt
7 Kyu- orange belt with green stripe
6 Kyu- green belt, 5 kyu adds a brown stripe, 4 kyu adds a second brown stripe
3 Kyu- brown belt, 2 kyu adds a black stripe, 1 kyu adds a second black stripe
We add our stripes at the tip of our belts.
Younger students who complete a junior black belt will retain a black throughout each belt rank until they reach an adult level Black belt
1 -3 Dan- Black belt
4 Dan- alternating black and red belt
5 Dan- White on top and red on bottom belt
6 Dan- red on top and white on bottom belt
7-8 Dan- alternating red and white belt
9-10 Dan- solid red belt
Blacks belts reserve the ability to remain in a solid black belt if they choose.
We have as Czech association of traditional karate those belts:
White - 9 kyu (beginner)
Yellow - 8 kyu
Orange - 7 kyu
Green - 6 kyu (where I’m at)
Blue - 5 kyu , 4 kyu
Brown - 3-1 kyu
Black - 1-9 dan
Thanks for this video I learned something new watching your videos.. you're super awesome.
Happy to help!

As an student of the Kyokushin Kaikan the correct belt order is white , red, red degree , yellow, yellow degree, brown, and black shodan
I was in TKD the belt system for me was White, solid Yellow,Yellow (Senior),Solid Orange ,Orange (Senior),solid Green, Green (Senior) Solid Purple ,Purple (Senior) , Solid Blue,Blue (Senior),Solid Brown ,Brown (Senior) ,Solid Red ,Red (Senior) and finally 1st Dan black. The Senior belts have black stripes down the middle. I’m a Black Belt 1st Dan
in belgium the collors are white,half yellow,full yellow,half orange,full orange,half green,full green,half bleu,full bleu,brown for 321 kyus and black
In our club we go , white , yellow , green, blue, brown and then black
My Rank order:
White 6th Rokkyu
Yellow 5th
Orange 4th
Purple 3rd
Blue 2nd
Blue w/Green Stripe 1st
Green Gokyu
Green w/Brown Stripe Yonkyu
3rd Brown Sankyu
2nd Brown Nikyu
1st Brown Ikkyu
1st - 10th Black
I am currently a Nidan (second degree) black belt in Kenpo

Sandan: Black 3 gold tabs
All higher dans: Black with school name and rank in gold
I see! Interesting..!!!
My dojo was:
White
Yellow
Orange
Purple
Green
Blue
Red
Brown
Black
I'm studying Shorin Ryu in NY, Long Island specifically. I'm currently 9th kyu, which is a yellow belt at my dojo. Our belts are as follows:

Orange
Green
Purple
Brown
Black
Here are the belt level order as far as I'm aware
10th Kyu - White
9th Kyu - White belt with yellow tip
8th Kyu - Yellow belt
7th Kyu ho - Yellow belt with orange tip *the 'ho' part means partway towards the next kyu*
7th Kyu - Orange belt
6th Kyu - Green belt
5th Kyu - Blue belt (where I am at the time of posting this)
4th Kyu - Red belt
3rd Kyu - Brown belt
2nd Kyu - Brown belt with one black tip
1st Kyu - Brown belt with two black tips
Shodan Ho - Black belt *provisional*
1st-4th Dan - Black belt
Hope this is helpful 🙂
