    As far as I know Thomann isn't using any "Knock off" brands.. They're using legit brands, but not the top quality available by those brands for the lower cost guitars. I've talked w/ a rep at Thomann and he has assured me that the guitars made in China aren't coming from the chops making the "knock offs" and the hardware they use are coming from the outsourced companies that make the hardware, same place most other legit brands are getting it from. People need to remember these aren't "Chibsons".. These are legit guitars using legit harware/electronics.

    Tuners are never the reason why guitars go out of tune. Strings stretch or bind in the nut when bent. Humidity changes the neck rigidity and curvature reacts under the conflicting pull of strings against truss rod. Tuners are just more or less precise (ratio) and pleasant to turn, that's all there is to them. Locking tuners allow for less winding around the post which is what removes the slow stretching of that part of the string and old split post tuners are doing just that too, no need to buy fancy hardware.

    Bought one today just for fun. Previous owner installed better pots (CTS tone & Bourns low torque on vol) and PIO caps. No more coil split but I'm okay with that. Very good guitar allround. I tried the older version with Wilkinson pickups stock and that one was also great. Just crazy how good it is for the price. No other guitar comes close. I have 33 guitars atm.

    Yeah those knobs are just wrong. Stick some Epiphone black fluted speed knobs on it. Maybe some locking tuners from Vanson, although the tuners it has are good, maybe replace the nut (the HB nut are always a bit too narrow) with a Graph tech Tusq. Check the frets with a fret rocker to see if any have not been pressed fully home. maybe change out the 16mm Alpha pots and the jack for higher quality parts (23mm Alpha pots even). Generally the Roswell pickups are great sounding, well made, pickups so unless you had a particular voicing in mind, I'd keep those. Roswell are not as far as I know affiliated with HB/Thomann, they are a Korean pickup maker that supplies pickups to many brands - you will find them in Squier guitars for example. You seem to be getting great sound out of the guitar and I think it looks really great.

    I LOVE mine. The 24 frets on a double cut makes the usual 21st or 22nd really accessible, and it’s really versatile on tones and styles. There were a couple of faults when I got it, the push pull knob isn’t tight on and often comes off in use but I don’t use the split anyhow. There was also a loose pickup pole, but I will be replacing the pickups. Never thought of myself as an SG guy but I have to say I’d play these over single cuts any day. Much easier to solo on.

      Just to follow up; I bought one of these guitars and have really enjoyed it. I did need to adjust the truss rod, lower the action a bit, changed out those ugly Tele knobs, and I put .009’s on it. Oh and the bridge posts started tilting forward coming out of the body so I shimmed the holes a bit and glued them in. Polished the fret and rounded the ends of the frets. So it’s been a good platform for me to learn a few set up techniques 👍

    I've only just worked out why Thomann did not make the body a direct SG copy. I didn't realise it's a 24 fret guitar. So it looks like they offset the lower horn a little further. That makes it a really interesting variant on the SG. As far as I know Gibson don't currently make a 24 fret SG, although they did in 2011.

    Yes, these are of course giggable guitars. They're not going to fall apart mid-set. Making a good guitar is no rocket science, just wood and metal put together with primitive electronics. Only those who believe it is are willing to spend thousands on one. Even pick-ups are a simple thing: just a coil of wire above a magnet. It's like pizza, really, all you need to know is the basic recipe.

    On an unrelated note, I saw your tuning issues with the CST, and resultant hardtail fix. I put a graph tech tusq nut and cheap drop in locking tuners on mine, and she stays in tune great. These guitars generally have NO BUSINESS playing and sounding as good as they do for the money. 😎

      Your comment about budget guitars and their pickups I think used to be universally true. However things are improving for some brands. Epiphone pickups are great and so are Roswell.
      As far as pots and tone is concerned you can get quite a change in track resistance. Tolerances can be plus or minus 20%. Worst case from one pot to another that might be a 40% change. That much, or even a 20% change in pickup load is audible.

    • @aeroshack
      @aeroshack 4 года назад

      @@ResoBridge I think Roswell are ok as well (also have a HB) but I dont gig. I watch that famous auction site and it seems budget guitars with costly upgraded parts either struggle or don't fetch the expected value. So I guess that was my point with 'owning it'. Re pots, I had just a scratchy volume pot, I changed both (inc tone) like for like one at a time, but it was the volume pot that made a significant difference to the tone, which was very confusing, thanks for your explanation ;) I left the (Ibanez SA) pickups alone after that and remain happy.

      Yes Oxen, if you play the guitar standing up (which most RUclips reviewers don't), you will find it virtually impossible to play, as you will be constantly fighting to keep the neck at a comfortable 45degree playing position, it just keeps sagging downwards. I tried Rich Bischoff's remedy (in another video) of adding wheel weights into the control cavity in the back of the guitar. This did help the problem, but I am still fighting with it. I guess my next venture will be to replace the heavy Grover tuners, with lighter tuners, so as to help to re-balance the weight distribution factor. Otherwise it is an amazing, well built SG type guitar, the attention to detail is great, the PU's are great, the materials are great, just a shame about the 'neck dive' problem.

      Toutes les 'SG' sont mal équilibrées et piquent du nez, y compris les Gibson. Il est nécessaire de les lester au niveau du cache arrière p.ex. à l'aide de magnets autocollants. Cette guitare au rapport qualité/prix incroyable ne fait pas exception.

    It sounds pretty good for a cheap guitar but that top horn is the elephant in the room that you dont mention and makes the guitar completely unbalanced and destroys the aesthetic and visual appeal IMHO. Gibson and Fender worked out the best shapes for solid body guitars decades ago. The oversized horn was introduced by HB to avoid Gibson litigation and so they could sell in the US and any other claim HB make for why its there is disingenuous. There are other copyists like Vintage guitars for example who have had a go at the lower horn and lower bout this time to avoid the litigation but ended up creating an equally absurd looking guitar. You have to ask yourself if HB can make a good sounding guitar for peanuts and still make a profit how are Gibson getting away with charging so much for their offerings.

      I actually think it looks cool, and different. Why does every guitar have to look just like a Gibson? This is cool looking guitar and affordable. Elephant in the room...Ha, that's a stretch! I've played it a lot, and never had anyone mention the top horn.

      @@RichBischoff Because I think Gibson worked out the best aesthetically pleasing designs at the outset decades ago that haven't been bettered. The same could be said for the open book headstock design and the les Paul body shape which are others of many examples I could name. Its just a shame that Gibson protect their designs so vigorously in the USA with threats of litigation that reduces the opportunity for cheap copies to be made available to customers in the US.
