- Yes, I know ... I can go to the harbor freight and buy something similar, but where is the fun of making stuff? ;)
To implement this project I used:
The Copper tube 22 mm x 330 mm
-The Handlebar motorcycle
The M5 threaded rod 340mm
two plastic plugs
6 neodymium magnets 20mm x 3mm (You see eight on the video, but I removed two because there were too many of them.)
12 m10 washers
12 m5 washers
9 nuts m5
plastic m5 cap with the handle
I am convinced that if you do not have a lathe, you can also make such a magnetic collector for chips. All you need to do is find the washers with an outside diameter of about 20-21 mm.
Washers are needed for the collector to work properly. Thanks to them, all magnetic forces are transferred to their sides (like a welding magnet).
Yes, I have been drilling neodynamic magnets. I have no idea if you can do it or not, but they work properly and nothing bad happened to them (except two, because they crack during drilling: D)
When you will re-drill them, remember not to overheat them, because they will lose their properties.
The whole construction works really well and I can definitely recommend it.
I am sorry that recently I have been adding simple and uncomplicated projects, but I had a renovation of the workshop, beside I am working on a very interesting vehicle and I do not have too much time. You have to forgive me :)

I've always said that the simplest concepts produce the best designs. It's the real world realisation of Einstein's famous saying: "Things should be as simple as possible, but no simpler!".
GREAT idea, can be modified slightly in multiple simple ways. Using plastic tubing, using electro magnet, making it really small for magnetically attractive parts, including many electronic components which often have magnetic leads (not all sadly). So many ideas now! Great job!

Great idea! J. An old mechanics trick for magnet clearing is to put your magnet inside a piece of plastic bag or a rag/paper towel and that helps clean the schmoo off

What a great idea!! Also, if you put a little piece of scrap wood or soft metal under the things you are drilling in your vice you wont keep drilling holes in your vice. Not a problem now while there are only a couple of holes but once it looks like swiss cheese you will find it hard to get things flat in the bottom of the vice. Great video, keep up the good work.

Great idea...thanks. Just ordered some 20x4mm magnets off ebay. They already have a 5mm hole, so I won't have to drill them. I'm planning to use some PVC electrical conduit rather than the copper pipe...hope that will still work okay. Thanks again...from Australia

Bardzo praktyczna rzecz. Można dostać magnesy z większymi otworami i wtedy odpada kłopotliwe wiercenie. Poza tym magnesy neodymowe są po to pokryte warstwą galwaniczną żeby nie ulegał utlenianiu bardzo aktywny neodym wchodzący w skład spieku, z którego są zrobione: pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnes_neodymowy

Kiedyś chciałem zrobić na elektromagnes ze starej lampy 18v, ale kupiłem evo tylko że za granicą, bo w Polsce to są chore ceny niektórych narzędzi. Super pomysł. Pozdrawiam

its simple, yes, but its also cool since i can do this with almost zero investments and it will be really nice to have since it saves time, vacuum filters and cutting fingers :)

Much easier to double bag a magnet. I used a speaker magnet for years. When its time to get rid of the chips just hold the first bag with one hand and pull the magnet out with the other.

I thought to do this project a few years ago, maybe someday. But, in my design, the end part is made from plastic instead of metal (copper?), I don't know yet if is a good idea, we'll see. Thanks for sharing !

How do you prevent the magnets from sticking to the tools (e.g. drill press, lathe) while cleaning them? I always have that problem.
to me the problems with magnets are that they induce magnetism to other metals and then they begin to attrac the metal dust

Proponuję zastosować jakiś pierścień w połowie rurki uniemożliwiający przesuwanie się opiłków (czy też innych przedmiotów) w górę wraz z magnesem ;)
fajne. Może kolejny projekt to filtr cyklonowy na bazie pachołka drogowego i np silnika z odkurzacza?
A na marginesie, może spróbujesz tworzyć projekty bez zaawansowanych narzędzi (np tokarka) ?
Wiem że efekt końcowy jest lepszy, jednak myślę że wielu subskrybentów ogląda Ciebie jako inspirację co może samemu zrobić w własnym warsztacie, a brak takich narzędzi zabija próby naśladowania Ciebie.
Ale generalnie gratulację bo kanał jest na coraz wyższym poziomie.
Podkładki na pręt, nakrętkami zabezpiecz po obu stronach, zamocuj na wiertarke i heja z papierem sciernym. Dla uzyskania lepszego efektu użyj mniejszej ilości podkładek i płaskiego pilnika. Myślę, że obejdzie się bez tokarki.

Ja wykorzystalbym elektromagnes. Miałbym kontrolę nad mocą i momentem wyłączenia bez efektu lecenia opiłków w każdą stronę. Ciekawe jak by dział mechanizm składający się z takiej tuby i izolatora magnetycznego wewnątrz. Może by to lepiej działało.
mam nadzieję że w ramach rekompensaty ;) pokażesz warsztat po remoncie i ten tajemniczy pojazd? :d
