The knob on the remote is to set the speed from slow to fast on how fast you want it to rase and lower your equipment
Hey Guys as you can see when you took the starter to the shop it worked just fine. Negative to the case. ( not to any lug) Positive to the solenoid top terminal then with a screw driver you can jump across the top terminal ( positive lead ) that comes from the batt to the small screw to energize the Bendix that throws out the starter gear and close internally the loop to the starter to turn. When the solenoid is energized it closes the loop ( connecting the top large post to the large post at the bottom ) internally to make the stater turn. transferring Positive from the top Large post of the solenoid to the bottom, if you only put positive the the bottom post the starter will only turn but the gear will not come out.
Won't find many small independant shops like that anymore.
nope those were always the best, little back yard shops always been my favorite, @@glennjukes5581
I’m yelling at the video “you don’t hook the ground to the solenoid!”
😂😂 I’m laughing too HARD at grounding the starter to the tractor but not the battery. Don’t be Wily. Love these video’s
I also had a friend paralyzed from the waist down. Hank he also liked starting tractors while he was standing in front of the tire! It was also in neutral but jumped in gear!
Same thing happened. Guy got run over jumping the starter on a 1150 MF. Always use a remote button with long wires and be in the seat when bypassing a primary starting circuit. Or better yet. Fix it.
Thank you for your APPRECIATION to your subscribers Hank!!!
Thank you sir!
@@HamiltonvilleFarm umm ya
You guys bring back memories, My dad and my brother we're gonna tractors ,With no money to get new parts, But we made it work somehow most of the time thank you for your venue Good job!
My uncle farmed with a 4230! Many memories from up in the cab! Good workhorses those tractors! They work well for many types of jobs on the farm.
Right on!
Hey Hank, good to meet you and Wiley the other day! Great video! That thing in the barn is what we call an MJU bomb lift, or the slang term, jammer. Used it on fighters to load munitions and fuel tanks.
I enjoy watching y'all work on old Big Rig and tractors
I love hearing old tractors come to life. Hopefully, you guys change your minds about the 4030 and try to tackle that. That tractor would sound awesome coming back to life. Looking forward to part 2. 🤙🏻
Jh
Thanks for your videos! Really enjoy you two getting old equipment started!
always looking forward to one of your videos, i just started agriculture school so i dont have tons of free time. but when i do i always look forward for y'alls videos
Glad you like them!
Good Evening Hank , it is 9:58 pm on 8/14/2$ here in AZ, US ! Have a great day today !
▶️Watch Wiley almost die here: ruclips.net/video/QpnrDsVL9o0/видео.html
Hey Hank what does he want for the 4030?
If you wire that starter right it would probably start
Greeting from Germany I just stumbled at this video and man you need to learn how to wire a starter motor but everyone has to start from somewhere so here is an explanation...your starter motor has two big screws on the solenoid don't know how it's called in English in Germany we say zugmagnet and the upper one is + for the solenoid and the lower one is + for the starter motor itself. If you want to start it just hook + to the upper screw on the solenoid ground - to the piece of equipment and then make a connection to the small connection on the solenoid
I almost fell off the couch when I heard you say someone referred to Wiley as your “Father”!! I’m sure that got his goat!! Poor Wiley just can’t catch a break!!!
That 4030 exhaust was closed but the top of the air cleaner was gone...so the rain flooded the intake and went into every cylinder with an open intake valve. I'm guessing/hoping the others are dry? Love the channel, enter me for the hat!
I didn't know John Deere made water fountains! 😂😂😂😂 Ya'll are doing great! Looking forward to part 2!
Good ol john deere 4230 started rolling in production in 1973-1977 and horsepower ranges at 100 hp. I actually have 1 myself with a bushhog loader on it, the 4230 in my opinion is one of the best tractors john deere ever made. A little tough to crank in the cold but other then that a great tractor.
Montgomery. We had some JDs at a coal mine. 4640 was always hard to start in cold weather. Starter turns too slow with 6 volt batteries in series. I once worked in a tractor dealership. And other brands spun fast with 12 volt batteries in parallel. And started quickly. I talked the shop bosses into letting me change it to 12 volt batteries in parallel. 👍. Solved the problem. Spun faster. Started much better. JD engineer (cousin) wouldn’t believe me. I said, just try it.
You guys are doing such a great job I like to see the old green and yellow come back to life. I have worked on many of them with the gentleman that I used to work with farming here in Indiana so I do know a little bit about those and yes the other starter should work but since this one works and get it cleaned up and give it a shot😂
JDE-80 is a starter removal tool.
It’s designed to get to the bolt on the upper back side of the starter to remove it from the flywheel housing.
These old John deers has a sound of there own.
Indeed
The sound of powerrr!🚜
I've installed the service body and tool boxes just like your setup. Houston Texas.
Nice! I'm loving mine
That tool truck needs dedicated battery storage and some LONG, heavy gauge jumper cables.
Why carry batteries to/from the machine when you don't have to ???
Watching Willie wire that battery across the solenoid contacts, almost made me yell at the screen, that it would short circuit the battery... But I watched further to see what would happen.
Well the magnetic flux around those cables was as expected. Remember only the Positive lead to the Solenoid. The other goes to the metal frame of the engine for Negative Earth.
The two large posts on the Solenoid short together when the switch is made.
I could definitely bring this tractor back to field use as it was from factory! Love this old iron!
The two of you keep looking fore the right wrench surely to god, you have all the wrenches you need by now. I love it when you get these old trucks crank over and you buy them to take home.
I'm glad you figured this grounding problem. I'm also glad you're not working with explosives!
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting.
Well I wish I knew all about those starters but sounds like the hook up was wrong or something like that. Oh my.
Hope you guys got it all figured out and the starters working right.
That old tractor does not look that bad. Hopefully you can get this beast running.
Thanks for everything Wiley and hank. Take care.
The Iowa Farm Boy.
Thanks for watching!
Can’t wait to see the John Deere 4230 running again and can’t wait for the Deere 490 excavator running again. Keep safe and keep the videos coming
🎉it's nice seeing you guys having lunch together 🎉it makes it like more of a family channel 🎉 thanks guys for the video...I wonder love a hat even though I don't where them🎉but my Pop does 🎉 JJ.. Jonjon..😊😊..
Hey Hank When you pulled the dipstick on that 4030 , it reminded me of when I was a young man taking a leak . 💦 It was a long , strong , steady flow 😂 bro. But I have NEVER seen it come out of a tractor engine before . I also have to steal the 14 foot ladder joke ! Thanks boys. I think the singer was George Benson 👍
Lots of cool green iron, the story those machines could tell. Hank you and Wiley make a great team!
Thank you
Love watching you and Wylie starting these old equipment but every time I get on my old case 1194 tractor I always use your catch phrase-Will it start--
Wiley and Hank always trying to start something 😂 and they do most of the time
6:21 I think Wiley just climbed up to the next rung on the joke ladder🤣! That was a good one! The look you gave the camera was priceless!
Y'all are so fun. God bless you both!
The 6404 serial number on the block is six cylinder 404ci engine for those that don't know much about jd your right hank about the hp there pretty good old tractors depending on the transmission but id be interested in all those including the combine if the price is right love the videos how are you liking the hitch in your truck
@ 28:54 I see that you have connected the battery ACROSS the solenoid.
When you engage it, all you are doing is SHORTCIRCUTING the battery.
One (-) of the battery terminals should be GROUND or the frame.
The other goes to the top terminal on the solenoid.
@ 39:56 you are not even connected to the battery.
Awesome transformation!! Sorry for your stings. Keep up the great work.
He got U on that 14 foot ladder Hank, good job willie
great video - you guys were killing me when you didn't have the battery connected when testing the starter I was yelling at the screen - my wife was wondering what was going on lol
I like 👍 the tractor 🚜 that the both of you are working on I think 🤔 it looks good and maybe 🤔 you’ll can get it to work you’ll have a great day
I think you figured it out but you were dead shorting that battery out. You had the ground hooked to the motor side of the solenoid. When you pushed the start button you connected the ground to the positive side of the battery. That JDE-80 wrench is a John Deere starter wrench.
Great video Hank and Wiley!! y'all are so entertaining to watch
Thanks so much!
Watch all the videos yes your truck is well laid out I'm watching from Scotland
Дякую за любов до стареньких авто
Great video..
Thanks,
Hank and Wiley.
I'm a fan of your channel Hank and enjoy seeing you a Willy using your expertise on the Will it starts.
Thank you
Oh,Wiley popping off with the funny jokes today.
Nice rain funnel on the intake!
Hank you gotta touch the wire on the other terminal on that solenoid to make the motor work on is the bendix one is motor
Got lo love theres older tractors. Lik to see how easy it is to will it start the today's tractors 15 20 years from now
Thanks for this share Hank!!🙋🏻♂️😀
Hey Hank a set of tools you should consider and invest in are wobble sets. Those can come in handy in tight situations like these with the starters.
I got some. Just forget to use them
That stairs joke.... I didn't see that one coming.... 😄
Love your videos as always. Keep up the good work.
You do or at least I hope you realize that the interaction between you two is the most entertaining thing an when you get one running well that’s just icing on the cake.
The most memorable thing is Wiley under an excavator and you asked him if he was all right an he says I’m fine I’m just under here contemplating how it is I got here.
God bless both of you.
Wiley got jokes today I love it. Man I love watching y’all
Hank and wiley that was an amazing video i cant wait to see part 2 you all stay safe
Ground the housing then pos to the solenoid lug that has a wire feeding the starter to test starter function
Should have add d bonus footage of choosing your entree at the restaurant 😂😅🤣 so surprising these Deere didn't fire right up...looking forward to round 2 at the Deere's 😎🇺🇸🛠️🚜😇
Awesome video. Hank can't wait for part 2. I appreciate you guys
It's out in the next few days. Got it ready to go!
Been away nowadays but great 👍 to catch up on your video, s hank &waly
I’m glad you didn’t give up with the starters i’m curious to see if the tractor starts.
The water out of the dip stick tube had me laughing pretty good! This one’s makin water….
Great and interesting video guys, hope those starters work for you 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Always like your videos. Hank think you need to make a trip to Harbor Freight for some tool kits for your tool boxes lol you all keep up your great content ❤👍
You need to hook the ground to the frame and not to the solenoid, positive goes to the top lug to the solenoid. My husband rebuilds alternators and starters. You guys are too funny! Love the videos.
Well you had the starter grounded to the tractor and were using a battery that was not grounded to the tractor so..... you weren't completing the circuit. 39:45. you need to run the ground from the starter to the battery as well when you use an outside power source from a separate non chassis grounded battery ;) When the bendix was coming out and going back you were energizing the bendix only. You have to jump the starter energize circuit as well to get it to go
That crooked speciality wrench id for replacing the starter. The 4230 was made from 1973 to 1977. 100 hp. There is a ledge in that fuel tank. You did not go all the way to the bottom.
I ran into one of the last USAF Warrants in 1990 as a fresh out of basic Airman and he was not happy I didn't salute him. Didn't recognize the rank. Anyway, many years later I worked with some fantastic Army Warrants and ended up instructing at the TACOPS school house at FT Rucker teaching Warrants on the CSEL.
What a Great Idea love the tow hitch -Brilliant
the JD wrench wiley had in his hand is the special wrench to reach the back bolt on the starters it was in the cab of the 4230
I couldn't stop laughing as you were trying test the starter and negative cable wasn't even connected to the battery. Thanks for the entertainment. I should have added that I'm a retired Army Warrant also.
The lever on the hydraulic hookup in the back is to speed up or slow down the cylinder that is hooked up to the tractor. Turn it to the left slowes it down turn it to the right speeds it up.
Wiley made two funnies this video lol God bless
Love all the videos from Ontario Canada
That tractor is number 55 of the assembly line and built 1973 , 100 horse power at pto and 84 at draw bar! Serial number is the plate on the back of the tractor! Also it takes 2 6 volt batteries 12v system
Try 2 12 volt batteries in parallel. Usually crank faster and start better in cold weather. In theory 6 volts are better. In reality pushing all those amps from one battery through another
Just want to say I am with Wily, ground comes off first. UNLESS positive ground system in which case positive comes off first. Doing it this way eliminates most chance of arcing.
Ground cable should be first off, last on !
@@norman7179 Exactly, unless it's a positive ground system and then you pull the positive off first and then last on. If you have never heard of a positive ground system look it up. =)
Thanks for another great video guys. I can't wait to see the old girl run again and a hat hat would be a plus, lol. Again thank you for this channel and have a Blessed day.
Guys you have to supply power to the big and small terminals and ground to the starter body both them were probably good
I really like watching you and wiley videos
The tractor serial number is on the back axle housing and is the one that was zoomed in on briefly. It’s a 1973 which was the first year for the 30 series and was the 155th 4230 across the assembly line .
You and Wiley make a good team
Sounded good the truck motor just not getting its fuel on own but well done u 2
I like that old planter. It would look good in the front yard
When you grabbed that hammer out of the red 2 box and looked at it longingly. I about started but not laughing. Hammer time
I learned that pumping up my seat with jumper cables. Gotta use same ground as positive source
The wreck that was in the floor board of the 4430 is for the back bolt on the starters of those tractors
Excellent video Hank :) , Wiley :) also yes get starters all rebuilt on everything too and solve trouble in long run plus get paint up green for good luck too! Yes sometimes starter task to take off and plus much more too Lol! Just becarefull too also Hank & Wiley want Lol on BIG Square battery 12 volt Negative ground one have 2 post in front for +& - and have 6 batteries vent caps fill up plus there 2.000 to 5.000 cold crank amps and with 160 to high number on Reserve Amps too ! Plus take both carry not kidding ya!
starter is good top terminal on starter is hot bottom is hot to spin starter when solenoid engaged with small terminal on solenoid put ground to frame or starter case
Wally, You are a great jokester.
hello sir, greetings here from the city of goiania, state of goiás in brazil. I think that your videos would hold more attention and become more interesting, if they showed not only the vehicles working, but washing and giving an extra look as well. Thank you and success!!!
The auto electrician knows his stuff..... hopefully he will get Hank & Wiley sorted for the fire up session !
The body of some starters with bendix is isolated and uses tractor frame to ground the starter motor. We use to run a ground strap from the negative terminal on the starter solenoid to the starter motor body to bench test a starter assembly. Long story short, neither of those starter motors were grounded.
take a starter bolt loose and put the negative under that and the other goes to the positive cable on the starter
The early John Deere's had a powerful lift capacity even without assisted hydraulic rams.
If it hasn't got 3 auxiliary hydraulic services and a pick-up hitch, it won't be much use these days.
Answering your question about the weed eater, here in the uk i would call yours a strimmer where as a straight shaft one would be a brush cutter.
You guys Sure could use a remote starter switch along with a set of starter/ air compressor wrenches
Watching you two trying to get that starter going made ne shak my head back and forth so much that my neck hurts. First take that ground off the field lug place it to the drive end housing. Then place the hot wire to the top lug then take a jumper lead from the got wire and jump to the smaller lead. The way yall were doing it is a good reason why so there are so many unnecessary trade ins.
