That’s essentially a digger Derrick which is used for setting power poles and sometimes telephone companies will use them if we’re getting into remote locations hence the why it has tracks on it! The auger is for digging out holes to set the power poles and the boom actually has 2 to 3 stages like most newer ones and there are a set of claws on the front that close around the pole and the winch is used to raise the pole up and down
You two guys are putting satellite TV out of business haven’t turned my tv on in weeks watching you guys instead. Your the kinda folks I would sit down and swap stories with. Love what your doing. Thanks
The way the engine is firing through the carb, I think the timing may be off, plug wires misplaced or valves sticking open. I wish Jonathan W wasn't so busy so you could collaborate with him to get it running. That would make some great content. I think I recall that Jonathan worked at the Carter Carburetor Company many years ago.
You guys certainly have fun and share joy in working on this stuff together. I really enjoyed this one. Your closing comments are so true and very touching. We lost a friend due to a mishap while working on a gasoline generator; he was feeding fuel into the carb, there was a backfire and well...the rest is history, and he didn't make it. So, everyone needs to take notice of your sincere notes at the end. Thank you.
You need to clean the points on gas engine if they have been setting for awhile, it gives it better fire, plus use a a different tank for gas because it get old and usually will be dirty and plug every thing. and can cause damage inside the engine. Carter carbs are pretty easy to rebuild Ask Matt from Diesel Creek he is pretty good at it.
They fed it from the can Um I'd say half corrosion in carb + the 2 wires they pulled they weren't sure of. And if they figured the actual throttle on it. It would've done better.
Hi Guys, thanks for another great video! May I make a suggestion? Check the firing order and clean the contact breakers. Unless there is a stuck inlet valve, firing back through the carb is a clear indication of incorrect firing order. Those points will be badly corroded, a quick clean will help with the coil charging. Thanks again!!!
This was a lot of fun to watch. No shame in throwing in the towel for the day and respecting the more dangerous things out there. I hope to see you guys come back and get that big boy moving.
Got the same boom mounted on a 91 international. Strong as a mule no hydraulic safety features to limit your power. Great for pulling pole butts. Much better than my 2011 telelect.
Yall gotta come back and get this ol machine running. Those Ford 300 sixes were born to run. They make damn near a diesels worth of torque too. Great engines. Git er done boys!
These engines made more torque than the straight 6 diesel that Ford had for industrial use back then.. there is a reason the 300 was used in machinery that required Ford power..
@@chucknorris277 - I'm pretty sure our line crew has a tracked vehicle like this that's shared by 2 or 3 areas - I've only ever seen it used once around Pittsburgh.
hank as someone that spent 8 years as a volie and someone that has been goin to fires for 20+ years i can totally see you wanting to stop when that carb ignited and i can understand your PTSD from your dad's untimely death and i am sorry for you you have my condolences i have seen my fair share of that before and yes that carb needs a good tear down and cleaning i am sure the jets are all pluged up
If that engine is from the 80's I doubt it has points in it. With all of the popping and snapping he probably put the wrong plug wires on the wrong spark plugs. It tried to run but it had the wrong firing order going on.
I would agree that either the timing is off a little or the plug wires are in the wrong location to the plugs ( when you pulled them off a mark on the wires would have helped you ) but if you do come back to this machine I would happily watch the video. If you don’t come back to it we’ll I’m fine with that too. Keep up the good work and we’ll see you in the next one
I laughed my head off at you 2 in this video, so much fun.🤣🤣🤣🤣. Really sorry to hear about your dad Hank, I thinks that must be one of the worst ways for any person to die.🙏🏻
Idk what they used them for in South Carolina but I’m in Alabama and the power company use them to dig holes for power poles that are deep in the woods and there some that come with a crane and a trailer that would pull the poles also.
What were you doing at Shaw Air Force Base? I finished my hitch in 1996 and stuck around Sumter. Sumter Utilities (formerly Sumter Builders) has been in business for a really long time, I believe they began running power lines back in the Great Depression-TVA govt contract-era. That auger may have been transported there for storm work and left behind, or maybe sold at auction after a time...who knows? I've been subscribed to you for awhile, it's pretty neat that you and I were at the same base. Keep these really awesome videos coming, you're helping an old Gulf War vet relax in the evenings.
Looks like a 300HD Ford. Very good for a gas engine. Used to drive a school bus that had a 300HD engine with a 4 speed manual and it would do the job ! Have a Blessed Day !
Hank, this video had me rolling! The humor and banter between you and Wiley is priceless! Looks like you've got a 300 I6 in that machine, they were amazing engines, and well worth revisiting. Looking forward to the next video! 🙂
Good morning from Eastern Kentucky, Hank you saved my morning, I was about to get up and work on something but I got the notification for your video. Thanks for giving me something to do this morning... Lol
When you pulled the plug wires off you may have put them back on in the wrong order. That would be why it is popping back through the carb and backfiring.
Check points and firing order timing is not right there not much different to diesel principle only thay use external spark rather than compression to ignite anway that's my 2 bobs worth keep up the good work from aus
My father god rest his soul was one of the first people to come up with the idea to mount bucket type equipment like power line trucks and other equipment on tracks thats been probably mid 70's when his company mounted its first one
For the regular truck version most electricians/telecommunications people call those line trucks because they are used to build or repair those respective lines...the foot pedal by the hydraulic controls is an auxiliary throttle control for the engine
Hank and Wiley the inlet needle in the carby is more than likely stuck closed. Tap the bowl or remove it and clean it out. There could be junk in there, a whole range of issues. It would be cool to replace the engine with a Cummins or a Cat engine. Or even a Detroit screaming would be pretty cool. Maybe just a bit of research about Gasoline engines would help 👍😜 It was entertaining 🤣 I hope you come back and have another go because it would be so cool to see it driving and operating again. I love seeing old machinery running again. Take care. 👍💪🇦🇺🇺🇲
Last week you're singing Benny Mardones, this week Wiley sings Boy George. Will we be lucky enough for a duet next week? You can bang the Cresent wrench and Wiley can strum a dipstick!
First off, I love your shirt Hank, I'm a believer too, and He does love a lot of people, including the ones that most people won't love. I knew that engine was going to run once it cranked, I-6 engines are almost bullet proof, and tough to kill. If it ran on ether, it will run on gasoline, I'm sure you would've gotten it going if you stayed on it. Figure out what closes the the top of the carburetor throat, it's called a "choke", it helps the engine pull more gas into the airstream, and that will help. Love you guys, some of your jokes are hilarious! Diesels are easier to get running, all you need is fuel, and it can be 30 years old if that's what you have.
Looks like a 4.9L Ford engine, that carb rebuild kit is available in a lot of places. I can get them if you need help I'm in Tampa area. Good work guys

Exactly my thought. This machine looks like it was used to drill big holes for setting power or telephone poles.
Telect is still in business and this was a wetlands utility pole setting digger derrick. They mount the derricks on a log skidders now.
