      Hello John, I love your videos.
      I have a question for a 800W or 1000W wind Turbine how long the pipe needs to be from the ground to the top, also can I use a aluminum light pole?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад +1

      @@wagner1968 15 feet and higher depending on your install area. Ground disturbance clears up at 8 to 10 feet and is gone at 20 feet in 90% of the world so I would exceed 15 feet with no obstructions like trees or buildings within 75+ feet away when installing yours. And a (19+ foot on average) commercial light pole is a great type of pole to use.

      Јоhn Daniel I thought you had to go from the rectifier to the charge controller to the battery? Or does it depend on what controller you have?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад +1

      @@80Matthias80 Depends on the controller, if you have a braking controller which is sent with the turbine the system works but not well. On mine I run from turbine to rectifier to battery, then my OPC controller controls top charge rates with diversion loading. Its a much better design than the all in one controllers because you can get 100% battery charging, the others will only get it to 90% due to their design which applies braking to the turbine to prevent over charge. In my experience, braking is not good on turbines, loading them down is.

    I was glad to see you show how low the output is on lower winds (10% of rated output at 9(?)mph). Do not get me wrong, I think wind turbines are great, IF you have the wind to support them. Most of the continental US just does not have enough wind for small turbines. I regularly run through the numbers to prove that for a most areas you are better off putting the money into solar panels. If you have 15Mph+ winds for eight hours a day you are right on the edge of being cost effective. Anything less, go with solar.

      Except both wires go from rectifier directly to battery. That would overcharge battery because the charge controller is further down the line. I know it's just a quick, rough drawing, but charge controller is first before the battery. The charge controller is what switches off charge to the battery and sends it to the load. (resistors)

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад

      @@Tex_Prepper Incorrect. Your confusing active load management with the battery destroying dead locking fake 440 amp mega solenoid misssouri design stolen from micro hydro controllers first stolen by then from Coleman. Mine is not even related to such a abomination.

      I'm not talking about any of those designs. Just talking about your diagram. So, according to your diagram, you can go to your battery from rectifier then on to the charge controller? So, your battery can automatically pass the charge on down the chain when its full?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад +1

      @@Tex_Prepper The controller is a active controller, it not a bypass. So you get the ability to control voltage at the level you want by diversion only instead of bypassing it into a resistor bank. This process keeps your full charging rate you choose. The bypass design, AKA Missouri /Coleman thing dumps your entire system till the battery is almost dead then releases. (I'll use a 12 volt system as example) So if your wanting your solar at proper rates you set its controller to max charge of 14.0, then your turbines do the bulk & balancing charging by setting them at 14.65 vdc. Your solar will not be affected, only your wind turbines will. Each time your turbine hits 14.65 levels into the battery your at full charge and the OPC controller starts to pulse the SSR's to resistors, at first its 3 times a second, and as voltage goes up every 0.05 volts it doubles its SSR rate of contact pulses. Based on the diversion resistor load you designed for your unit it can maintain max charge at all times with that process. The hacked Missouri design dead locks a massive resistor load, drags your whole battery bank down to 12 volts and your solar controllers freak out, Your solar panels get the AMP shit knocked out of them, the controllers and inverters go into temp default and your likely to shorten your battery life by 50%.
      Now you see why I have such disdain for such junk!

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад +1

      @@Tex_Prepper PS - A very accurate design using the OPC and SSR's will be drawn up with high detail soon, I just ran out of board space to be in depth.

    Any ways thanks for all the info. and keep up the good work, LOVE IT!!

      We did, and at 20 feet using a meter ( amzn.to/34sLKpk ) about a week ago, its info you need to do installs so I do record it when possible. 56.3 in 15 mph winds, seemed you only hear it good if your within 40 feet. You will hear it in 20 mph winds a bit louder but the wind itself is just as loud at that point. The 5 blade with sword style blades are a WHOLE different story, 69.5 db at 16 mph so I recommend the low wind version that uses blades like this 800 on it to make it quieter.

  • @raitey

    Have you had a shot at getting one of these to work with MPPT? Surely you'll get a much better result if you can take any input voltage and squeeze out more wattage at the right voltage. (PWM just pulses the input voltage to try approximate the charge voltage but due to pulsing, you lose a fair bit of power).

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  3 года назад

      They do sell a MPPT controller for them that cost $320 but then thats the price of another 500 watt 5 blade unit! Better to put up 4 turbines that are slightly inefficient than 2 with MPPT in my area. But if you do have low winds, a MPPT is a best option.

      Wind turbine to MPPT, MPPT output to battery. It converts the 3 phase from the turbine into DC voltage and uses a system to enhance charging results plus a diversion system to prevent over charge i high winds.

      Dan look at the 2000w model of the blue Chinese sun inverter. (sun WAL-GT 2000) You will need to oversize the inverter to handle high wind output. it's what I'm using. It has never gone into load dump. Or you can series link 2 x 1000w models.

    Great video, though in major cities they do not allow this kind of wind turbine (safely of blades going flying) but vertical turbines are usually able to get approvals and are not a problem. Is there a vertical wind turbine that you think can work well and generate 800 - 1000W using a 12V system?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад

      This 800 watt is very solid, and extremely quiet. A vertical turbine is much louder than this one, and would be a seriously big waste of money due to cost per REAL watt output for them.

    • @stuarttener6194
      @stuarttener6194 4 года назад +1

      John,
      I was told at one point a few years ago (I am not familiar with the current legislative environment) that having a blade wind turbine in Las Vegas is illegal, but vertical turbines are not (it is a safety issue as far as I understand it). So, if you think a wind turbine that is vertical will give me no useful return then its best for me to eschew the entire idea of setting anything like that up. Solar here is way to expensive when you include the installation cost and the power company's having gotten the government to skew things (like selling power back to them) to make it a poor return on the investment.

Everything else about the Turbine looks like yours and it weighs 35 pounds. I'm a bit disappointed with the very small wires and I understand that 24V can be smaller wire but 16 gauge? What do you recommend? Thanks sir

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад

      The length of the wire is not likely to cause you a issue as long as you go from drop to jump to 12 awg up to 22 feet or 10 AWG up to 68 feet from it to the battery area, I would expect them to have a China Gauge with thin high temp sheath that looks like 16 awg but is more like 14.7 awg actual due to Metric measure. It should be good for 45 amps @ 29 volts (1300 watt peaks) meaning each wire ( using the 3 phase 2.62 amperage loading math) capable of continuous 18.5 amps, peaks of 22 amps.

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  4 года назад

      You tube deleted your comment for some reason but I saw it first. So your 24 volt may hit half the amps at 2x the voltage is the exact math. Possible 45 amps for sure but its short burst, and not past the wiring capacity. If you see a storm on the horizon that will be dangerous you engage the brakes as you should to keep it under 50 amps @24 volt so your OK. It can do that, I assure you!

    John, I’m just starting to plan my own power system. From what I’ve seen, 48v is the preferred battery bank voltage. Is that true? If so, would you need a 48v capable turbine? Also, I plan on assembling my own LiFePO battery bank... seems to be the best option considering longevity, stability, and power density. Can you confirm? EDIT: Nevermind, just watched your “Why do I run 12v” video. I want to replace grid power in my home. Mainly lights, fridge, washer/dryer, hvac (we have 2 4ton systems), etc. I just saw your 5000w inverter... if I want to run my house 100% in case the grid goes down, am I going to need one monster inverter? I have room for as many panels as I need. You’ve convinced me to run 12v with lead acid. I plan to run solar and wind (using the hurricane turbine you reviewed - your discount code doesn’t work anymore). Is this even possible, or do I need to setup a smaller system and just choose what to run?

      I prefer 12 volt, its not about efficiency of a volt or watt, its about total survivability of a system, actual total cost is lower and availability of parts as the world descends into chaos. You sound like your a Back woods hick when you say GO 12 VOLT, according to the sellers of 24 and 48, but isn't that what they would say. See my explanation video then you decide. ruclips.net/video/1SNqV7nMDHU/видео.html

    Hi, great video, but unfortunately I don't understand English (I'm Italian), I understood the concept, I would kindly like you to tell me what those two tools are and what they are used for in a plastic box one attached to an aluminum rod , and if you can send me the link to the charge controller and all the rest. Thank you

      That was better English than 90% of RUclips. Prego!

    Is there any merit in putting an MPPT load on a wind turbine like this, given the wide range of potential output voltage ?

      Yes, and they make a MPPT thats got numerous chokes, massive Mosfets and transformers just for these sized turbines. You just have to be careful your not getting a Vietnam knock off MPPT so study and investigate a lot before getting one.
