one of the few things that made Mary bearable was how much she loved Matthew but most importantly her friendship and kindness towards Anna
As Tom said “ she was a way nice person that people gave her credit for” she was a very complex character. That’s why is one of my favourites

The stuff Mary and the other Crawleys did for their servants are just touching.
Absolutely. Mary helped Anna here and with her pregnancy, Cora kept Baxter’s secret, Robert got help for Patmore’s vision problems and also saved Thomas’ reputation and very likely his life by keeping his homosexuality secret, Sybil got Gwen a new job, Edith nursed William when he was hurt, Violet & Isobel helped Ethel get a second chance at life, and Violet also tried her best to save William from getting drafted.
I love the friendship between Anna and Mary. ♥
I love Anna playing the game for Sybbie as Tom carried her.
Which episode is that in?
It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Mr. Bates, just because he was in York, couldn't have arranged for it to be an alibi only (him taking "longer" in York for instance is an intentional red herring/hint) OR even had someone hired to do it themselves. I don't personally think this happened but there's more to John Bates than we ever know or would know, with how secretive he was.
Now see I say Mr Bates did a wonderful thing,he took care of the love of his life,these freaks think they can get away with so much crap and have no reason to believe that they will have to pay for their abhorrent crimes
Mary always looks stunning.
One of the best aspects of the show is in Anna kind of pulling a Mr. Bates herself, like, she knows the value and power of keeping some things secret. Even if it's a self-sacrificial thing, and of the worst kind, to Anna it's bad enough that Mr. Bates finds out she was raped, but John even tells her himself, "If it was Mr. Green, he's a dead man" and she simply says that it was some random guy who came in off the street and there's no way of ever knowing who did it, something I don't think John fully believes anyway, but in that moment he believes her and yeah I do think Mr. Green likely would've departed sooner and in even more dramatic fashion if she did tell him the truth, but alas she keeps that from him. I was screaming at the top of my lungs "Please tell him, tell somebody" but I was happy enough at the karmic justice Mr. Green got just anyway, but then you find out what happens to Mr. Bates down the line and... yeah. So much for happy endings, that's not this show I guess.
Mrs Hughes handled the matter better, imo. Still, it would've been nice to see Green actually run down.
I love that place where Mary and Gillingham meet - what is it? It looks as if it's somewhere in London. Afterword: I found it out! It's Syon Park in London.

Mr.Bates and Anna were my least favourite characters but wow this deed of Mr.Bates made him my favourite lol
