Thank you Torsten for the information you share. I get it now about roasted maple. Its a cost cutting thing for the manufacturer. Properly curing wood in ovens takes time and storage space. Hopefully the roasted quick cured necks remain stable over time. Lowes and Home Depot sell wet 2x4s because their supplier quick cures the wood. Tree goes from forest to my project perhaps in days and finding a straight or dry board now is near impossible. 🤪
What iv learned from some techs is the slots in the nut is crucial they have to be a little wide so the strings don't tweak and bind in the slot and then lube the slots and tuners have gears so the shaft does not slip many guitar truth videos on this.
A good quality tuner with a decent ratio is all you need. A guitar tech with a touring band needs locking tuners for speed only. This home player just needs quality.
The only "Locking Tuners" I ever really "need" to just save time are the Original best "locking" slotted vintage babies that to me are unbeatable and without any locker to fail on you. Fender makes a modern drop in slotted peg tuner set for modern guitars too and they're only around $50 on Amazon.
Ive been using Sperzel tuners for many years. I dont use a tremolo. The question is not : "do you need locking tuners?" The question is: "do you need Sperzel tuners?" The answer is YES. All locking tuners ARE NOT created equal. I have Schaller locking tuners and they are GARBAGE. Sperzel tuners are the best tuners ever made for stringed instruments. They are precision made out of aluminum and there is no play in them like the regular crap tuners everybody else makes. You can literally turn the tuner either direction and get acurate pitch without having to back it way down then tune up to the note. No- just turn the tuner either way to the pitch. Its not so much the locking part as it is the precision gears have ZERO play. They truly are the best made keys.
