This is one decision I disagree with. Unlike the West, India has always had proactive women representation in govt, right to the top level. The candidate's merit must be the only criterion for any position. Creating such divisions based on gender, caste, religion etc. creates more polarization than unity. You need only look to the West or even our own history with reservations to see how such divisions can fracture society.

While you make valid points hope eventually we get the parliament you just described, but the fact of the matter is that the representation of women is abysmally low event after 75 years. Considering they form nearly 50 of the population. Should this status quo continue for the next 100 years? Regarding merit, just look at the MPs in parliament. How many of them are on merit. So many became MP on money power, family name etc.

@@stand4reason there is one thing about people not coming in on merit because of circumstances, which need to be fixed, quite another when you make it a law. BTW, there is NEVER 100% representation of any particular community according to their population. That is an organic process. That was my point about the West, where now you have people clamoring for public office simply because they are LGBTQ+. India may not have had the representation, but we have proven that the doors to power are not closed to women. Our most powerful PM in history was a woman, and so are some of our most potent state-level leaders. Our current President is a woman. The solution to better representation is to encourage women's leadership and education. Passing such laws has never worked in favor of any community in history and has only sown divide. In a way, you are dictating to the people of the country who they can elect as a representative to parliament for them. This is antithetical to freedom of self-determinism.

People in position of power might abuse it, if it so happens to be a man doesn't prove anything. Women also misuse their powers. As long as women fight election via party or independently and win, then there should be no problem. If you want to create quotas, make it compulsory for parties to put forward 30% women candidates for the election, but don't create a direct quota in the parliament itself. That doesn't help with growth of the nation. It will most likely be abused to put sub par candidates into the post and worsen our legislative bodies.

Already there are unspoken quotas for women in the selection criteria to balance diversity, nobody talks about them.
    - I understand that every country is male dominated and these kind of reservations help women to climb up the ladder. But why do these pseudo feminists show hatred towards men in competitive fields.
    - It won't be a surprise if women are given reservation even in IT companies (that too only for managerial roles. lol).

It's heartening to see a civilised debate in the comment section. My 2 cents:
    a. The Indian society & state have not been able to make the public sphere safer for women leading to low Labour Force participation (economy), poor health indicators (NFHS-5 data), & of course poor political participation.
    b. Women haven't been given an equal level playing field in the public sphere because of the said reasons. It becomes worse because of gendered violence & crimes.
    c. Completely support the argument of meritocracy -- BUT, current MPs are not in the parliament because of their merit. Sad but true that on the achievements of senior party leadership, alleged criminals & murderers & rapists are sitting in our very parliament today (45% have criminal cases against them, 29% for heinous crimes like murders, rapes & extortions).
    d. A completely meritocratic resource distribution only applies for a completely equal society - which no society is, let alone India. Absolute meritocracy in unequal societies w/ no affirmative action will aggravate inequalities.
    e. Current party tickets are given many times based on family connections which naturally have been with men due to better networking & historically limiting women to private sphere.
    f. A World Bank study has highlighted better social expenditures in Panchayats led by women.
Hence this bill makes complete sense to me. Only hope is that it'll actually lead to better representation & empowerment of women.

@Firstpost the figures you flagged on women's representation in panchayats are promising. What irks me is the grassroots reality of their husbands proxying for them, known as 'mukhiya pati'. They take all decisions and attend social events as though they are the elected reps, on behalf of women mukhiyas, their spouses. They don't allow women to exercise their mandates in local governance. Everyone knows about this phenomenon including the govt, and accepts it, tacitly. So in practice, it is the men calling the shots, particularly in the Northern States. I see similar trends in municipal elections also. Can you do anything about it?
