AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS OFFICIAL IS ASSASSINATED
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA
A senior official of the African National Congress was assassinated on Saturday, the South African Press Association reported.
Chris Hani, 50, was also the leader of the South African Communist Party.
SAPA quoted police as saying Hani was shot at his home in Boksburg, a largely white suburb east of Johannesburg.
It quoted a police spokesman as saying a man had been arrested.
A neighbor of Hani said the suspect was white.
Hani, a senior member of the African National Congress policy-making national executive committee, was also general secretary of the South African Communist Party.
Hani was commander-in-chief of the ANC armed wing for many years. Right-wing whites regarded him as one of their worst enemies.
My uncle died of cancer a few years ago. Most down to earth guy you could ever meet. He was diagnosed with cancer at age "36". He died at age "41". Both are my favorite songs. I heard everyday / 36 live and I almost bust into tears. Come and dance.
By re-working #36 into Everyday, they were able to take a great jam that represented who they were in their early days, and make it fit with their new identity in the mainstream.
Plus, they still work parts of #36 into their live performances. Although no one can ever replace Leroi Moore, the chemistry in this group is as good as it has ever been, and I hope they continue to perform for years to come!
is there anyone better than dave matthews? i don't think so...
I hope that those who enjoy this song understand that it commemorates a great man, Chris Hani, leader of the South African Communist Party. Who said that the devil had all the best tunes . . .

I LOVE this song! When you think about it, it makes sense that this song evolved into "Everyday".
When the band was working on the album "Everyday", they were struggling to establish their identity as a mainstream, marketable group. They weren't having "fun" anymore, making music had become their job. The chemistry between them was suffering.
The song "Everyday" represents them bridging the gap between their humble roots in Charlottesville, and their rapidly growing popularity.
FYI: "#36" is a song dedicated to the memory of South
African anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani who was killed in his efforts to
free South Africa. The main refrain of "Hani, Hani come and dance with me"
was changed to "Honey, honey come and dance with me" because Dave felt that
the song was too upbeat to have such a sad message of death. Consequently,
Dave also dropped the original lyrics about Hani's murder for a more upbeat
mix of scats, moans, and lines about love and happiness. With the release of
"Everyday," "#36" has morphed into the title track, and the band still weaves
"#36" into "Everyday" when performing the song in concert.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!! I wish they would play again!!!
Not alot of people realize that this wasn't just apart of the "everyday" song, it was a song all by itself. Love it and good post.
Him and Danny Carey of Tool are just phenoms...I love them both so much man.
Know thus comment is over a decade old, but 2 of my biggest influences. Never heard another person mention those 2 in the same sentence. Like your style
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate that they killed this song with EVERYDAY. We will never be able to hear it again in this version.
i think everyday is its own song, and this is its own song... they were just genius enough to combine them into an awesome medley.
man dave is really young in this video glad it was posted
Carter is simply THE BEST!
wow! wow! wow! wow! wow! what a great jam, like the people that were there at this show, everyone was probably dancing like with fire on their feet.
they need to bring this back and forget everyday!
best DMV song ever jam out to this everyday
Love this jam

@citybeer I just went to one of their concerts in July, and they played this song. It was great.
Reminds me of Chris Martin when he was young :P
Still one of my favourite drum solos. Carter is God.
Older versions so much better than the later ones. Best version imo is the version of the Warehouse 8 vol. 3.
goddamn carter :)
"all you need is love" to appreicate both....
I love this song! What ever happen to real music like this?
Gotta love Carter's fro.
best version of this song!
I hear ya. Most of the crowd at shows doesn't know the story of why it's Hani Hani. Click on (more info) at the top right of the video and you'll see. And yes, I saw 4 shows this summer, only one w/out Roi, it was sad!!! Extremely sad!!
Ive said it before and ill say it again... You know its old school DMB when Roi is rockin no sunglasses and a baseball cap.
#36 was a good lover song... i would wait to hear this to get down... come and dance with me... and then boyd.... come on honey... come and dance!!!!!!!
yes
i think what they were trying to saying is though it's the same song, they both contain their own substance and style...they can stand alone seperately......
Man…I miss the sound that Chet made. I truly wonder if Dave ever picks it up and says the same
Back when D could sing. More sober at the show, but it happens. still all my props DMB
i was 3 months....in the womb
RIP HANI
this was the absolute shit back in the day. great upload
Dave rockin' the franken forehead!
at 3:26 does he say, "that's boyd tinsley" ...?
Yes definitely does! 😎
by this time it's honey, he stopped saying hani in like 93
there's no comparsion between "hip hop/rap" and r&b....even i give r&b their dues (afterall it stands for rock and blues.....git r done son.....props to you george, keep the ear open...there's more older and new if you search.....
excuse me....RHYTHM and blues, but whatever you get the point....and i'm more into old stuff then newer anyways, so to DMB2741, what mtv has to offer means shit to me....
Does anyone know where I can find the ORIGINAL #36. The one where Dave still sings if all the slicin and dicin. You know, the dark original version. I've heard it once and never again have been able to find it
umm r&b is rhythm and blues bro but u r right no comparison to rap
@mikasa52
Trust me, I'm aware. I wasn't saying that reworking #36 into Everyday fixed the bands problems, only that it bridged the gap between their humble roots and their push into mainstream.
Personally, I would say the band's darkest spots were around the turn of the decade, however. Their inability to complete the "Lillywhite Sessions", as well as the lack of collaboration on "Everyday" marked what I consider to be the low point in the band's chemistry and relationships. Just my $.02
this is some great vintag dave... i think h still has hair
It's actually Hani Hani
Interesting
thats just not true. Dave has said himself that the song Everyday evolved from #36, a song he previously didn't think had any substance.
I would love to find a flac of this song. I bought "Listener Supported" because this was on it, and I dont like the version they did.
is this before they hit the big time?
About 2 months yes.
Thinking about it more, this is right when the spark was firing. Everyone knew it was here, it was a time to cherish as it would never be the same again. As this was being proshot a bit of (lame) supplemental lighting was brought in, Dave disliked it very much, but within a couple months he would be playing under much much brighter lights and learned to keep the head up and eyes open
i was 7... jesus
lol look how young dave looks
@nomad2894 prime time :)
@Disc24095 yes, you will :)
Wow - this is old...look at how short Carter's hair is!
@pdiddyx123 he still says hani hani...its just the few uninformed people in the crowd that say honey honey. This is a sick version though!!!
@smileybone3010 look up dennis chambers on youtube.... you'll see who carter ripped off. (thats kind of harsh, more like followed very closely.)
carter with a perm lol
lol
I disagree. The best version of this is on Listener Supported, with the lovely ladies singing back-up.
its not
a shame carter had to team up with a dope fiend like dave
