Absolutely, no doubt about it. This was the time though that back and leg injury, along with burnout was starting to erode that untouchable form he had through 84 and much of 85. The grueling us open where Mac fought through only to be a tired and flat in the final was the big turning point.
@@datacipher Well it was a perfect storm, with his personal life collapsing waxing and waning and IIRC Lendl had an easy match with Jimmy? It was good to see Mac and Mats on reunion tours in the 00's. Sure Mac should have won a couple more Slam tourneys but suffice to say his position in tennis history is ummm.... pretty solid.
After two defeats against Mac (Stratton & Montreal), Lendl could be psychogically under pressure in New York 2 weeks later. But something happened in his head, maybe the feeling he was ready to take the power and stay n°1 a long time.
It's amazing to see how McEnroe won points on the net. Nobody has played as him. Lendl was a sick to improve all, and he did it, and started to win McEnroe and become nº 1. McEnroe stopped 1 year in 1986, and It was bad for him, because when he tried to come back in 1987, there was a very good players: Becker, Edberg, and later Agassi and Sampras. Mac let his tennis under his own gennius, he improved few and late. But for me Big Mac was Amazing.
The gap between John & Ivan became tight compared to 84. Without so many umpire's mistakes who lead Ivan to loose concentration during important points, result could have been different. Ivan understood that he had to come to the net earlier & more often.
Correct. Many factors, including fitness. Mac came out strong against Ivan then pooped out -- Wilander tired him out. And after that he lost a step, and perhaps a little confidence and that is all it took for Lendl to then dominate.
@@KingCast65yes he won this one and the beat lendl in straight sets at stratton just before this. Then the five setter vs wilander and mac’s lack if elite fitness killed him. Then after the layoff he wasnt the same.
@@mikearon1970yes, he also was starting to develop some nagging back and leg injuries at this time. With his sublime form it didn’t matter too much but it was starting to take the edge off.
Mcenroe in 1985 is so underrated.
Somewhat, yes. Who won Wimby that year? Oh right Boris of course. And Curren was on fire and took Mac out in Quarters.

@@KingCast65 we were robbed of a prime (not peak though) Mac versus Becker in the final!
Grande vittoria di mac, in quel momento era ancora il numero 1

Classic 80s tennis
Unreal net play
This match was nuts! They both heaped abuse on the umpire, and Mac went off on some people in the stands!
i was in the crowd there somewhere...
Felt like yesterday

Lendl would go on to crush Mac at the US open final weeks later.

Its not crushing if you had to fight off set points in the first. Straight set win, no doubt. But not “crushed”
