I believe you nailed it. Lucas thought he could trust Kennedy and the folks at Disney but that was a massive mistake. Kennedy has never been a Star Wars fan and her driving purpose was to make herself famous so she would be remembered with the likes of Lucas, Spielberg, etc. That of course will never happen; it's a tragedy she all but wrecked Star Wars in the process.
The problem is she missed what made Lucas and Spielberg famous in the first place; they gave us great stories! Maybe not entirely new in and of themselves, but they always put their unique spin on the stories they told. Nowadays, hollywood seems less interested in telling a good story and more interested in making a quick buck, which in tun make them less memorable, and less desirable stories to buy.
I'm not so sure. He's spoken ill of the corporations before. I think he was rushing the deal because he knew to delay would mean to take a tax hit, it's all there in Bob Iger's book.
Let us not forget that Kennedy has many successes under her belt. I mean my god she made ET! Sure there were mistakes made. And #Thor is right, Lucas sold Star Wars (for better or worse). He could have made it contractual that they followed his wishes, but he didn't. I am not saying that there weren't mistakes made and TLJ was a burning dumpster fire. But I am really enjoying Andor and the Mandalorian. Ahsoka wasn't terrible. Lol and I did actually like (for the most part) Kenobi (Watching Vader fight was bad ass). I won't lie, I can't believe Kennedy is still around. I would have guessed she would have been quietly terminated by now. Who knew lol
To be fair George got four billion dollars. He could have set up a shelf company to deal with it and have some direction but he sold out to the white slavers ... at least Empire Strikes back will stay the best movie of the franchise .... forever now.
"The main thing is to protect these characters and make sure they still continued to live in a way that you created them and that the universe of Star Wars can continues to grow." Biggest lie she's ever told and an absolute backstab to George Lucas. They did the total opposite of "protecting these characters" and "continue to grow".
Less than two years later, they nuked the EU and refuse to continue it as Legends, which fans have asked for going on ten years now. Such a bleeding shame. This is how our stories die. With thunderous applause.
I just wanted to see the original trilogy cast together, one last time in the sequels but now it’s physically impossible. Peter Mayhew is gone. Kenny Baker is gone Carrie fisher is gone. Of course that’s not Disney/lucasfilms fault but still that doesn’t mean it doesn’t sting…
@@Milothemighty10 Yeah, and Harrison Ford is very much done with Star Wars. It's truly mind-boggling that Disney bought Lucasfilm, and they made a trilogy where it had no plan from the start and waste their opportunity to reunite the old cast together. I know it's been 4 years since the sequel trilogy is over, but all that disappointed just sinks right back in.
I think Kathy's statement when asked if she liked Star Wars was pretty revealing of her motives. She didn't take the helm because she was a fan wanting to do Star Wars right, she took it because she wanted the power and prestige of being the woman behind Star Wars and Lucasfilm. Some people want to create art and beauty -- Lucas certainly succeeded in that. Some only want to gain power. And that, I think, is the big difference between the two.
Just because she didn't explicitly say she was a star wars fan, doesn't mean that she wasn't. She has a lengthy working relationship with Lucas and Speilberg dating all the way back to the 80s. She obviously would have had some passion for it if Georgie Boy felt he can trust her. It would be incredibly hard to fake it IMO unless Lucas is terribly gullible.
@@lucky247365saying she was a fan would only endear her to the fans. No reason not to admit it if it was true? Lots of people work on projects and do a professional job but aren't fans of the project per se. Lucas probably thought she understood the core themes, and she probably does, but she didn't tell George she was going to undo all that (maybe on the say so of Disney, which is why she's still there?).
@@lucky247365 That is true, it doesn't mean that she isn't a Star Wars fan. But it struck me how it seemed like she was trying to avoid saying she was a Star Wars fan -- if anything, it seemed to me that she was more a fan of Lucas's cinematographic accomplishments and legacy. But that's just my take on it. As for your second point, it could be a mix of things. I agree that it would be hard for her to hide deceitful motives for all that time. It would make more sense for her to just be less creatively competent than George, with the power getting to her head. Honestly, I don't really know. I just know that I have seen the results of Kennedy's Star Wars, and I have been ultimately disappointed. Thanks for replying!
That clip of rian johnson wanting to make a divisive movie is kinda hilarious. He made a movie, got the exact reaction he wanted...and then got really mad about it
Yeh he basically went "I want to anger the fans and make the fan base fight itself" then went "Hey why you all so mad?! It's just a movie! What do you mean it's my fault?"
Best part is if that movie hadn’t had Star Wars in the title everyone would have hated that poor excuse for a story. Some people were just determined to like it based off the IP rather than quality of the film thereby accidentally making his goal a success
George after TFA: "But you said..." Kathleen Kennedy: "I altered our agreement. Pray that I don't alter it furter" George: "But..." *Kathleen Kennedy snaps fingers, TLJ happens*
You don't need to be a fan of these legacy franchises. You just need to respect them and their fans. And for the life of me I have no idea why people who openly hate on these franchises and show contempt for the fan base are being put in charge.
It’s because the executives doing the hiring want to appeal to a “broader” audience and attract people who aren’t interested in the IP, therefore they make the product as watered down as they can, while alienating the established audience. In the end the broader audience is bored with the terrible product and the established fan based hates it. Rinse and repeat with every IP out there until there is nothing left to remake
@@agrumpymonkey5800 Accurate. Star Trek is suffering the same issues as Star Wars. There's more content than ever, but only a tiny fraction is at all half decent.
@@agrumpymonkey5800 Exactly, Disney-owned Lucasfilm prefers drooling-dumb normies, not the most loyal fans willing to walk through rain and snow to buy this shit.
I agree, top executives don't need to be fans and sometimes it might even be better if they have some distance with their product. But disrespecting the audience and blaming them for your failures is never going to work.
There are multiple reasons, one of which is seeking a broader audience as others mentioned But behind that, I think a lot of writers/creatives resent bigger IPs due to how they end up being 'forced' to work for them. Execs want to print money via popular IPs; No matter what. Working in that environment, only popular IPs are valued. Its an environment which pushes those within it to resent their work, while also giving liberties to try and 'fix' it. Like...Its similar to working at a restaurant for years and slowly coming to hate the food served there 🤔🤔
It's absolutely heartbreaking to think of what they did to George. He sells his company off to someone he thought he could trust. Leaves behind story ideas and actively wanted to be a consultant on those films. Then his ideas are thrown out in favor of just repeating what he had done before, which is the thing that he hated the most about Hollywood. The endless and shameless cash grabs sequel reboot movies they pump out. George always tried to tell his story and try to do something brand new with each film he made. Such a shame that he had to watch from the outside as Star Wars became the very thing he swore to destroy
Lucas is a hypocritical liberal who wants the rich to “pay their fair share” but rushed to cash out before a big Obama tax hike came into effect. And he wanted social justice cred for putting Kennedy in charge. He’s more culpable than Disney.
apparently, George Lucas has severe trouble with judging the characters of women close to him. I'm pretty sure he is being manipulated by his current wife also.
This actually hurts. I know it’s small beans compared to so many of the problems in the world today, but she flat out lied to Lucas. And then her and her goons have the nerve to attack anyone who may have had issues with what they did to our beloved characters.
I guess I am not a "True Fan", as this doesn't affect my life to the extent of "heartbreaking". Heck, hardly even raises to disappointing. It's a group of shows, movies and other media.....nothing more. I know, that truth might not be popular. But it IS the truth none the less. Or maybe that makes me a bot...
Kathleen Kennedy really betrayed George. What a duplicitious individual. Telling him everything would be safe and respected with her, and then meanwhile planning to totally undermine him and what he creatred. Seriously, it is pretty disgusting to watch.
@@jimmyboydonald6578 Not the right way to think about things bud, as grawman said attack the actions not the person. I would have gotten rid of her if I was her manager
George was afraid that a (trade) corporation would ruin his characters by diluting the quality for profit. He made the mistake of trusting his Star Wars universe to a wolf in sheep’s clothing who betrayed his good faith and seized control of the galaxy, using it to further her own political interests…. it’s basically the plot of Ep 1 and 2 and the splitting of the fan base is pretty much the Clone Wars.
Knowing KK studied film actually makes her story make a lot of sense to me. She likely always wanted to be a filmmaker but never got her chance, so she uses her position now to do what she always wanted, tell her own stories. Unfortunately she seems to have never grown past the cringe fanfiction phase of her abilities, so we get stuck with what we got. The things that don't have any connection to her, seem to be the most successful, The Madalorian (S1 since it gets progressively worse the more she is involved), Visions and Andor. I doubt that's a coincidence. I also think there is a little resentment towards George and Spielberg because she was basically a coffee girl for them.
Kennedy’s only stipulation for the sequels was that they be centred around a young female jedi, which seemed fair enough, but I get the impression she didn’t really care much about the story or the other characters beyond Rey. Finn’s story had so much potential, but was continually squandered, perhaps because the filmmakers knew (consciously or unconsciously) that it might prove more interesting than Rey’s vague, sort of nothingy origin story. Boyega was definitely on to something when he complained about Disney/Lucasfilm giving all the focus to Rey.
Unfortunately, you're giving JJ Abrams way too much credit in the sabotage of Finn's character. After that opening scene, Finn was turned into a joke almost immediately.
Unfortunately, Finn, with Boyega cast in the role, couldn't be anything other than comic relief since certain global audiences wouldn't go for it if he was a main character. Boyega just became a tick box target for the studio. A shame as I like him as an actor and the character had potential.
Hubris, they were too busy sniffing their own farts to properly plan out a successful Star Wars trilogy. They thought they could crap out whatever they wanted and the fans would lap it up. And fans kind of did (at first with TFA), but oh boy did it change with TLJ. Their egos just wouldn't let them admit they made a huge mistake.
You see, your failure is to assume having lots of money automatically means being sensible. The hookwink of the last 20 years has been convincing the internet generation that power and wealth must be because of diligence and intellectual rigour. The cracks in the system were showing in the 90s, so the social commerce pivot (entertainment) was to marry financial success to intelligence. Its why nerds stopped being the butt of jokes and a new style of nerds being autistic legends was created. Now they have pivoted again to convince people that power and wealth are inevitably entwined in order to delete the vestiges of political power being held at the ballot. All part of the end stages of capitalism. This last stage will then give way, in the 30s and 40s, to the notion that money is less important than the power it derives
Don’t know about George, but I’ll tell you exactly how Spielberg feels? Watch how he intentionally goons her during that Indy 5 premiere in which he honours Lucas, Ford and Williams, which left her fuming 😂
GL compared selling the rights to the films to selling his kids to white slavers, in a interview after selling them and being snubbed by them. "They weren't keen on having me involved ".
Kathleen Kennedy’s answer on Star Wars is pretty much what Hansel says about Sting in Zoolander. “Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that.”
At least when George was in charge he tried to enrich the universe with new things even if his execution was poor . The fist six films had imagination and vision at least.
Episode 8 isn't my favourite by far but it's the best example of doing something new in star wars along with R1 and Andor. I'm not sure where you think Lucas did after the first 2 movies? Even episode 6 is basically a mix of 4 and 5
@@TheSt1092 nah, he dies using the force for defence, never attack. That's literally what his masters told him to do and what made him better than his father or Kylo. If episode 4 and 5 came out after episode 3 the same people crying about Luke would be crying that hardcore warriors Kenobi and Yoda just pass their knowledge to the next generation and die
I wish I had the talent to make a documentary about this disaster. I hope someone does in the future. This story needs to be preserved as a warning and roadmap for any would-be franchise.

Yet here I am today...with nothing but grief and not an ounce of the love and excitement I used to feel for this franchise. RIP Star Wars....
It's totally irrelevant if KK has seen that old Rian Johnson clip about dividing audiences, because it was all there for her to read in TLJ's script. It was not some secret mission of Johnson, it was right there on the pages!
We shouldn't forget that some of this blame needs to go to Bob Igor and the Disney board of directors trying to make Star Wars a production line of movies and shows just like Marvel. Now we see that both franchises are suffering and/or gasping their last breaths.
This is true. Marvel and Star wars was cool, until disney took over them and made them woke production line movies. There was no more uniqueness about them, just the next thing to see.
I don't think KK seriously set out to destroy Star Wars on purpose, but having said that... she also doesn't care if it gets "ruined" for the old fans of SW... her whole goal seems to be distancing from the past and courting newer generations... the old legacy stuff is for baiting but never truly honoring them.
And the Disney apologists use people's reception to the prequels to try and defend her. The prequels were bad movies with great ideas that needed more time to cook. It's completely different.
At some point in time, George said, or did something to offend Kenady so much so she held a secret grudge against him. Now that she has the position to punish him, she wrecked an IP that not only has hurt Lucas, but millions of others.
If you guys want to know what George had wanted to do in his sequel trilogy, go watch Star Wars theory’s breakdown of it. Even if you don’t like him, it’s very informative. There were a lot of cool ideas.
Funny...sounds like, from George Lucas' standpoint, there was a good deal of source material and even some ORIGINAL ideas and concepts for future Star Wars content. Let's also keep in mind, Bob Iger is THE ONE who decreed that the "new plan" for Episodes VII thru IX should be to just remake The Original Trilogy. So, between Iger, Kennedy, Kiri Hart (her choice to run The Lucasfilm Story Group), and Pablo Hidalgo, this was already starting everything off on the wrong foot.

@zacharymccants7922 .....so brian understands the fine nuances of making and distributing meth, and admittedly he did do a good job on that series. A lot of red flags are raised when you sit back and ponder this reality.....to be honest, the star wars movies he made are exactly what a meth head would make. Nothing was coherent, nothing matched what was already in place, and the weak minded crybaby crap he pulled when everyone on earth hated his dumpster fire is exactly how a dirt bag druggie would act.
Richard Donner on making Superman in 1978 said the following “you take material seriously but don’t take yourself seriously” Had only the makers of the last trilogy followed that mantra who knows what they could have done.
@@АлексейМомот-щ7о It actually isn't. For example, Gareth Edwards the director of Godzilla 2014 was respectful of the source material. He claimed the Legendary Godzilla was designed by the crew under the assumption the 1954 Godzilla movie was based on real events and what witnesses remembered of Godzilla's appearance.
I can tell you how Star Wars would not have been if George was in charge. It would not have been the smoking remains of a dumpster fire. The prequels told a very straightforward story with gorgeous action choreography to carry it (because the dialogue certainly didn't).
To my mind, Iger is the root of the problems at LFL. He was the one who wanted the rushed production schedule, and he was the one who wanted George's stories jettisoned (I mean, he was part of that group and was the one with the most power - Kennedy was there too but he was her boss, essentially, right?). In the back of my mind I remember how he's the same guy who, in a different lifetime, forced TWIN PEAKS to reveal the killer early, resulting in a season of bad stories and the eventual cancellation of the show. He may be a good businessman, but that does not necessarily have anything to do with good storytelling.
How could it be worse? Guaranteed Lucas didnt (in his concepts for the Sequels) cuck his own best characters (Luke and Han), and that alone would have preserved a huge portion of the fanbase.
There are 2 examples that aren’t talked about as often but at a time of excitement I felt may not have been good omens. One is when KK canceledThe Clone Wars mid story arc. I get that Cartoon Network had them and Disney needed to make that change but KK didn’t realize the impact and love the fans had for that. Hence years later we finally got the Seige of Mandalore story arc completed. And the other was a quote before TFA opened and she was surprised by the huge reaction the “Chewie we’re home” clip got. She said she knew it would be a nice surprise but was shocked at how big a response it got. Just SO out of touch with the product she was in charge of. So I of course would still be disappointed on the ST but it also adds anger because it’s not as much THAT she failed but HOW and WHY she failed since it was because of ego and lack of respect for Star Wars and the fans.
I think you did a good summary of what happened. I still feel the same when I watch that interview, where she says that she will honor his work and characters, that she's not truthful. The way she looks at him feels like she is saying what he wants to hear. It also feels like she doesn't know what she is talking about. This was the first time I ever saw her in an interview, and my reaction was Why did he pick her, there must be someone that is more truthful and capable then her. And I was sadly right, I thought George new her so it will be okey, but no. Then it somehow started not that bad, I was okey with TFA. George wasn't involved anymore, I might be able to still enjoy this. Rouge One I still think is very good. But when TLJ came and we also heard that Rian got promised a trilogy, before the movie came out, I also had watched the clip you showed. I got suspicious and it didn't take many minutes of that movie to understand why. Rian didn't want to honor George's characters that's why he got a trilogy. We also know how she didn't really like Favreau putting Luke in Mando, making Luke great again. I actually think she is the wrong person for the job, she was bad as a secretary for Spielberg and I don't understand that George didn't know her lack of competence better. We should also have in mind that George can have put in her contract that she couldn't be fired. That might be the reason why she is still there. Or is it that she follows Igers plan so well
I hadn't seen that quote from Rian Johnson before today. What a strange motivation: to make a movie that some people hate. Mission accomplished, I suppose.
Only question relevant is, how much was Lucas aware of Blackrock, Vanguard and all of those taking over media, food, medicine, agriculture, politics and most other existing ressorts completely. If he knew, it's all his fault too if Kathy was associated with them back then

Being a fan of Star Wars doesn't necessarily mean you can make Star Wars. Filoni is clearly a fan, and while I like a lot of projects he's had a hand in, I wouldn't say he's batting 1000. The problem with Kennedy, that I think you can pick up on from that interview clip, is that she admired Star Wars as a film project not as a story. She admired Star Wars because it was a successful film that changed the industry; and fair enough. But the main reason it changed the industry is because it had a good story at the heart of it. Avatar had ground breaking technology behind it; how many people do you hear talk about it for it's story, or say it's their favorite movie? Lucas changed the film industry because he pushed the industry in order to better tell his story; he made ILM specifically to help him make the story he wanted to tell. That's what Kennedy is missing. She's always seen Star Wars as a franchise to market rather than a story to tell; the problem is a bad story is hard to sell to people.
Honestly I just want to get over Star Wars but I don't want to abandon channels like yours. Star Wars to me is like a wound that I'm not letting heal because I'm metaphorically moving about and with each movement I keep on opening it. I just want to move on.

So she decides I can do this, I’ve watched the likes of George and Steven do it for decades, I have learned the secrets. But those two are special directors and creators who no one is going to simply reproduce their results via osmosis. It does feel like a tale of hubris and regret. Her moment for “salvation” (for lack of a better term) can be in her recognition of her limitation and finally handing things over to Dave and Jon and stepping out of the way. It seems that would be out of character for her, but it might be her best path to redeeming her time as head.

I think Star Wars will always be a cultural juggernaut. It just needs to be in the hands of people who understand it and will nurture it back to the well-loved property it once was. That last picture with Igor and Lucas before the Kennedy one. I don't know if it's just me, but I think I saw some doubt in his eyes. Maybe that's why you picked it.
I get more anxious about the old EU. There hasn't been a new story for Legends in almost five goddamned years, and it just feels like that as time passes, more people forget it. They'd rather ask Disney to cherry-pick ideas from Legends to make "canon" again, without understanding that changing the context doesn't make our stories "canon" again, because they're not the same anymore. Look at Thrawn to see what I mean. All that people are going to associate him with is Filoni's bullshit. They are rewriting Star Wars and they will succeed in burying the EU forever.

Exactly right, Thor, the disaster of Disney SW can also be seen to be due to Lucas, Kennedy, Iger and the rest of the corporate suits or filmmakers not realizing how well loved the SW universe is and how these fans expect QUALITY to the tales told in this universe. Kennedy thought she could be PC and at the same time make fans happy by throwing in cool ships, great special effects, lightsabers, stormtroopers, a few aliens and a droid or two. She thought that the spectacle was all fans care about, the story (she thought) was of secondary importance. It was all about making money and being seen as someone who brought SW forth from the Lucas era into the modern era. Those two things were all Kennedy cared about and she was arrogant enough to think that anything she did would work because she knew the magic formula to make it all work.

This was a fantastic video. I think you absolutely nailed it. Well done you earned a fan.
What Kathleen Kennedy has done cannot be undone. Because we have a canon, her disastrous decisions have ruined the lore for those who began the journey in the Star Wars universe as children. It is a loss of what was magical. What we can do, and what Gina Carano alluded to, is heal and move on from the work of her hands. That is, if the reins are taken from her.

From what I've learned from nearly every person who's ever worked on a creative project, it is never, *ever* a question of "Can you" because no duh. If you can think of it, you can do it with the right creativity and knowledge on how to do it. It should instead be a question of "Should I?" and for a lot of original projects I would say "yeah, give it a fair swing and see how far you can go. Even if you have to release it and you've realised that you aren't proud of it, no biggie. Just pick up the money and start over on either something else that you prefer or reboot your original property or if some group of people liked it sell it off to them and let them like it if it doesn't hurt anyone." However, should you be put in charge of someone else's creative work, treat it with the utmost respect. You shouldn't spoil it rotten if the original concept is arguably kind of bad or offensive and needs a good cleaning and polish in some areas, and you should absolutely *N O T* drag anyone or anything down. Using negativity or destruction on someone else's work is malicious not just to the original work in every sense of the word, but to the creator in their time and energy in creating something that people are passionate about and a waste of time and money to the fans and people who paid to watch a work they trusted you to do a good job on.
A tiny part of me wants to think that Kennedy had the best of intentions. But she was just overcome by her own hubris. Gratefully, the Star Wars that was still exists. I don't need Disney SW to enjoy what was there before it and I can pick and choose what I keep and what I ignore just fine.
Again, you can create female characters and have them be leads but when you don’t do it correctly that’s when I have an issue. You have some great female characters in legends but never wanted to bring them on the big screen.
I really Filoni doesn't make Mara Jade "canon" again, it's not going to be the same, look what he's done to Thrawn, it'll just be a redhead, perhaps even a race-swapped woman, sharing a similar name in a parallel universe.
I still think the worst sins of the sequel movies is they destroyed most of the best female characters to create Rey... Imagine if Audiences got to see real quality female characters in theaters like Mara Jade, Winter, Jaina, or Tahiri... Not a single one of them is now possible in Disney Canon, Jaina because the twins and Anakin being replaced by that toddler Ben who then kills his father, Winter because she lost the twins she babysat and the Alderanian special forces were made to look like morons in Kenobi, Mara Jade for similar reasons in the video, and Tahiri was basically replaced by Disney Canon Boba Fett while also losing her tie to Anakin Solo(as he doesn't exist)... And again, all of these were invalidated by simply the characters and plot in TFA, no other sequel required to screw their canon status.
@@mycelia_ow As I said, it won't be the same character, just a redhead (or a race-swapped woman since Hollywood hates redheads) sharing the same name. Her story won't be the same, and Filoni contributes to the Marvelization of Star Wars. He says of the EU, "if I'm gonna use it, I don't want to change it, that'd be rude," but that's literally what he's done the whole time. He's not "adapting" the EU at all, and he proudly admits he was doing the "canon bomb" the whole time.
You said at the end we can’t say what Star Wars would have been like if Disney didn’t buy it, we can though, just look at the dozens of new novels that got cancelled, like the Jaina books or the Nomi Trilogy, conclusion of Legacy era, Mille video games comics everything, all cancelled, we would have at least had a timeline that we care about carried on and concluded, it’s just sad tbh makes me genuinely sad
Currently selling all my Disney star wars movies except Rogue. I don't even know why I bought them I was disappointed in them. The fact that Disney + exists and just keeps pushing out mediocre quality has worn me out on Star Wars. It would take a miracle to get me back on board.
They don’t hire anyone that knows what makes Star Wars special. All these writers miss the mark. The Original Star Wars movies was the hero’s journey. A perfect story of a hero with flaws, training and overcoming evil. These new shows and movies have no soul in them. Nothing but spectacle. Star Wars is more then light saber fights.
When it was announced Disney bought Star Wars, I knew it was the beginning of the end. I was called crazy and sure, when the Force Awakens came out, the hype was real but man, I hate how damn right I was. It’s sad.
To think they missed the one chance to have at least ONE FEAKIN' SCENE with all Luke, Leia, Han, and even Chewie...and they didn't even try...they blew that all away... not to mention didn't plan the story...
"The main thing is to protect these characters and make sure they continue to live in the way that you created them, and that the universe of star wars continues to grow" The first movie they release, Luke's jedi academy and all of his student are dead, the new republic and its entire fleet is destroyed, Han Solo is murded... Great

I want to see an alternate timeline where the sequel trilogy had a roadmap and was made by one or two directors for all three instead of each director getting their own movie. I'd also like to see what a Rian Johnson standalone movie would have been like. If he was given something like Rogue One with few or no legacy characters, would the fanbase feel differently about him. Alas, we'll never know, but it's interesting to think about.
Kennedy's legacy will be one of complete failure. She won't be remember has a great film maker, just the person who truly ruined Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
The ironic thing of Kathleen Kennedy saying they have no source material to work on is that they indirectly used the source material. The Sequel Trilogy was a hybrid between Legacy of the Force and Dark Empire. The story of Kylo Ren was similar to Darth Caedus. Han and Leia's son turn to the Dark Side. And then Dark Empire and Rise of Skywalker was about Palpatine's Ressurection. And now, Dave Filoni's Mandoverse is the Thrawn Trilogy. He's making a Heir to the Empire movie. And theres rumors about Abeloth being in the Rey New Jedi Order movie.
To be fair, Lucas’ decision to sell Lucasfilms to Disney was a really braindead one since the very beginning, there was tons of red flags but he chose to ignore them completely
She was never a fan because in the clip, she mentions how big it was and that she wanted to be associated but she never said "Yes, I'm a Star Wars fan", which any fan, regardless of subject would say.
Before KK became the president of Lucasfilm, she and her husband Frank Marshall were arguably the most successful producers in Hollywood history. Now that she is on her own, I suspect that it was Frank who knew how to make movies and Kathy who knew how to get coffee. She can't take the credit for Star Wars' successes (The Force Awakens was always going to make money, and she had little input on Rogue One, Clone Wars, or Mandalorian seasons one and two). All the failures have her fingerprints everywhere (Solo being unwanted by fans, not vetting directors and writers, starting production on various projects only to have them cancelled or drastically changed after lots of time and money, forcing underdeveloped characters into everything). Kathleen Kennedy makes Roger Corman look like a genius.
Anyone notice how Ahsoka's story matches up with exactly the story we should be seeing with Luke Skywalker.. from training a new padawan, to chasing down Thrawn.......... to worrying about the legacy of Anakin Skywalker.
Dodging the questions is indeed BSing. BSing isn’t just being dishonest, it’s misdirection, creating distractions and muddying the waters as well. Delay, distract, obstruct, all while appearing to do your best. It’s weird how few people get this. I guess everyone else was a better student than me who got their assignments in on time.
Thor, I get holding Kathleen Kennedy accountable due to chain of command logic, but at the same time, I don't like treating her as a magic fix button, that by removing her, things get better, the way the majority of this community does. Are we being too hard on Kennedy? Because these are DISNEY issues, they are going to outlast her, and fans who think otherwise are in for huge disappointment.
Removing her is just the first part, Star Wars can’t change with her having all of the creative power. She is the ruler of the Star Wars properties and she approves everything. She is the main person and we should start with her before moving onto everything else. Writers won’t change if she’s still in charge
@@michaelmccormick6571 What I want most is more EU as Legends stories. I think Disney's the reason that we're not getting it, and without her, nothing substantially changes for me. So I have no vested interest in removing her. But you can sure as hell bet she's choosing her successor.
Since Johnson was on record from the beginning that he valued being a provocative filmmaker as his most important goal, which is fine for him to aspire to be, for Kennedy to then still hire him shows either complete negligence on her part for not being aware of that desire, or complete contempt for Star Wars thinking that was what the franchise needed. Regardless, she should have lost her job a long time ago.
She definitely didn't do all of this 'on purpose', but it speaks on how horrible of a choice Lucas made to pass his prized and coveted torch to someone that would let it collect dust if it meant she got credit for owning the torch in the first place, and thinking she did something good with it
I would disagree. She did do it on purpose, except her "purpose" exploded in her face. If the fan base loved what she did, she would be claiming all the credit in the world. Of course, she won't take responsibility for the disaster she caused the franchise.
Her main philosophy is to make money, keep profits flowing which is a perfect choice in Di$ney's eyes. Kennedy was good at that before. Makes one wonder if Lucas really had a choice. We may be getting a new CEO soon anyway.
The Prequel backlash argument has always felt weak to me- it's common knowledge that Lucas was heavily involved with The Clone Wars animated series & was also developing a live action Star Wars tv series. I don't know how so many people seem to forget that when arguing about his reasons for selling.
I became I Star Wars fan during the prequel era and while I did like the original trilogy and recognized its achievements over the prequels, to me the prequels are those movies that I identify with growing up. Having said that if all the people Lucas could have trust with SW I was baffle about him selling to disney. I didn’t grow up with disney and I always felt like they were to childish and I thought that they were the kind of company that would ignore IP and let it waste away without using it. Never in my wildest dream would I have thought about what they have done to SW. I really think Lucas did it out of spite, specially considering the messaging of the prequels and the original trilogy. Lucas sold to the empire so that we would see what a souldless corporation would do to all entertainment. I think Lucas knew that a lot of the criticism for the prequels was rooted in bough media outlets criticizing him for his success and the fans ate it up, so he showed us by sacrificing SW so we could open our eyes to all the propaganda.
The best way to protect the characters was to leave it alone. I would have liked for them to dive into Old Republic content or a story from the past. It’s unfortunate Kathy and her team went the wrong direction.
Just asking but what would have happened if george sold it to cartoon network? Given the fact that the clone wars was originally produced on it's channel.
Lucas NEVER cared. Very first last scene III Obi-wan and R2D2. Very 1st scene IV. Obi-wan doesn’t recall EVER owning a droid let alone same R2D2. Would your English teacher let you get away with that in writing? I know, but it’s not just ‘editing’ and ‘continuity’ it’s the very storyline.
I mean in a way she did get her wish. She will be known but for destroying Star Wars. Not for being passed the torch and continuing the legacy

Ironically, she’s infamous.
When Kennedy publicly made the statement.."We don't owe Lucas anything for Star Wars" That sums up what is WRONG with Star Wars now under Disney. 😡

When did she even say that
To be fair George got four billion dollars. He could have set up a shelf company to deal with it and have some direction but he sold out to the white slavers ... at least Empire Strikes back will stay the best movie of the franchise .... forever now.
"The main thing is to protect these characters and make sure they still continued to live in a way that you created them and that the universe of Star Wars can continues to grow."
Biggest lie she's ever told and an absolute backstab to George Lucas.
Imagine saying this right to his face and then having the ego to think you could do it better.
George Lucas: "You agreed to 'protect the characters!'"
Kathleen Kennedy: "I lied. As I had from the very beginning."
Disney wanted the power, and they'll keep it long after she's gone.

Best part is if that movie hadn’t had Star Wars in the title everyone would have hated that poor excuse for a story. Some people were just determined to like it based off the IP rather than quality of the film thereby accidentally making his goal a success

I agree, top executives don't need to be fans and sometimes it might even be better if they have some distance with their product. But disrespecting the audience and blaming them for your failures is never going to work.
There are multiple reasons, one of which is seeking a broader audience as others mentioned
But behind that, I think a lot of writers/creatives resent bigger IPs due to how they end up being 'forced' to work for them.
Execs want to print money via popular IPs; No matter what.
Working in that environment, only popular IPs are valued.
Its an environment which pushes those within it to resent their work, while also giving liberties to try and 'fix' it.

George was afraid that a (trade) corporation would ruin his characters by diluting the quality for profit. Good analogy.
Handing the legacy to KK was like handing the keys to a child who has always hated you.
No. It's handing the keys to someone who lies about having a driver's license and doesn't even know how to drive.
Should've been Jaina Solo.
They screwed Poe too.
For the life of me, I do not understand how a multi million dollar company makes a movie trilogy with absolutely no road map, no planning whatsoever.
Because the cult of woke has no planning; just primal screaming and lashing out.

I can tell you how Star Wars would not have been if George was in charge. It would not have been the smoking remains of a dumpster fire. The prequels told a very straightforward story with gorgeous action choreography to carry it (because the dialogue certainly didn't).
What I’ve been wanting to say for the last decade:
KK, you’re FIRED.
You could easily be _pining_ for her with the next leader. Don't think it can never happen. It very easily could.
Never knew he was the reason for this. That explains a lot
Is that what happened to that show? Gosh it sucked
How could it be worse? Guaranteed Lucas didnt (in his concepts for the Sequels) cuck his own best characters (Luke and Han), and that alone would have preserved a huge portion of the fanbase.
It's an incredibly depressing and infuriating story. Every time I see it come up, I am just furious for him.
Well put,
My heart breaks everytime I have a thought about how great things could have been
I think you did a good summary of what happened.
Or is it that she follows Igers plan so well
When your trilogy is punching itself in the face, not being a SW fan is luxury problem to have.
If he knew, it's all his fault too if Kathy was associated with them back then
Imagine how much of a double headed snake you have to be to earn someone's trust. She probably spend 20-30 years pretending someone she isn't around him. A yes woman.

I think you nailed the whole situation. In some sense I feel for Kathleen as she has been at the nexus point of some of the most impactful films of all time and she’s been just out of sight, “behind the boys” and likely in those days not given much credit or thought.
You nailed it sir.
She made herself famous, all right. She will probably be studied in business schools for decades on what not to do. The whole series of female caused catastrophes, like Bud Light, et. al., could be a whole course in itself.

Just pick up the money and start over on either something else that you prefer or reboot your original property or if some group of people liked it sell it off to them and let them like it if it doesn't hurt anyone."
However, should you be put in charge of someone else's creative work, treat it with the utmost respect.

@saberiandream316 Well an EU zealot like you is also part of the problem.

Removing her is just the first part, Star Wars can’t change with her having all of the creative power. She is the ruler of the Star Wars properties and she approves everything.
