I’m 45 and I have bad osteoarthritis in my fingers, and it’s getting worse. Your performance made me cry. I will keep fighting. I just find my pinky sticks on the last note, then my hands ache. My teacher keeps trying to get me to rotate my hands more. You’re truly inspirational 💕🇨🇦
I too have arthritis, started developing it in only my pinkies within the last couple of years. Sometimes it hurts quite a bit, sometimes less. It's not (yet) in any other fingers, but it is in my shoulders, I think. I wonder about the hand rotation. I sometimes think that some piano teachers do not understand what arthritis is, and they apply to it the same solutions they would for tendonitis. This doesn't really seem to work for me. It's difficult because the saying is, "If there's pain, you're doing it wrong." However, I don't think that's the case with arthritis. My saying is "after you've tried every trick to make it less painful, try to play through the pain." The other option is finding repertoire that is less painful. What do you think?
Wonderful playing! I am an organist and pianist, and have severe psoriatic arthritis throughout my body. Have also had carpal tunnel and tendonitis operations. Cannot play much anymore. Keep going, Machiko!
Absolutely beautiful, very different from other performances. The more reserved tempo gives room for more fluidity and expression which I really enjoyed. Thank you for sharing this!
Congratulations, you are my hero, beautiful playing despite the arthritis conditions. I do know as I have it in two of my fingers, being the worst my middle in my left hand. I am sorry my piano playing is hindered my such terrible condition
Hello. I wonder if you can tell me how you manage your arthritis? Your playing is beautiful. I just started getting arthritis in my fingers and I am also a pianist. I want to keep playing. I see you and it gives me hope. How do you take care of your arthritis? Thank you for any comments!
I've had osteo arthritis for 30 years. It started with a single joint in one finger, and it spread to all my fingers and both of my thumbs. The affected joints tend to be stiff and uncomfortable, and sometimes I get sharp pains in them. Also, I cannot move them fully, and I cannot make a fist. I'm lucky that my arthritis has not affected my knuckle MCP joints (metacarpophalangeal joints). The rheumatologist I saw told me there is no cure. I don't do anything special for my arthritis, and I don't take any medication. However, I do try to eat healthy food. I've continued to play the piano daily whenever possible, though when my kids were young, I went for months and sometimes years without playing at all, for lack of time. I hope you can continue playing too. Good luck with that. And thanks for your compliment.
Thank you very much for your response! I will also continue to play, and I have also started eating more healthy (and more anti-inflammatory or at least non-inflammatory foods). It hurts a little when I play right now, but I can get used to the pain. And that's just one finger - my pinkie!
My right hand fingers can’t lift much, and I have a pinned feelings in my right shoulder. Do you know what condition I might have? I used to be able to play this piece but I no longer can because my fingers don’t lift at all
I'm sorry to hear about your condition. You might want consult a neurologist, or perhaps a physiotherapist. An anatomy book such as the Thieme Atlas of Anatomy might also be helpful. Good luck!
I truly commend you for playing so beautifully I love your interpretations. I've seen on some of your other videos people criticising your tempos.... obviously these people know nothing about arthritis. You play these pieces so musically and with such finesse especially since as you've stated there is no cure, my mother has arthritis so I've seen how limiting it can make things. I was just wondering since most doctors tend to say anti inflammatory medication can help but obviously being on them long term has it's own dangers did they produce any results for you in terms of reducing stiffness during practice or performance?
Thank you for your compliments. I'm glad you enjoy my piano videos. I don't take any arthritis medications myself. Instead, I find that as I play the piano every day, the stiffness in my hands gradually decreases. But even then, the range of movement in my finger joints is limited. I'm sorry to hear about your mother's arthritis. I hope she finds some way to feel better.
両手の指全部が変形性関節症(ブシャール結節とヘバーデン結節)になっています。今の所何とか頑張ってます。ご視聴ありがとうございました。

very clear , it's not always with pianists to day
I'm glad you think my playing is clear. Thanks!
Happens to be one of those pieces that require speed for it to really shine. But this was very musical! Amazing!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you like my performance.

How did you get osteoartritis?
I started having osteoarthritis after my first child was born. It slowly got worse from then on.
I am so jealous, I am trying hard this piece with no result... One day I will be good as you are!
Yes, it's difficult. Good luck! I hope you succeed!
