That was extremely informative from a man with a wealth of experience on the water Dave. Some how I don't think I will be attempting something like this yet as I have nowhere near your experience but thank you for sharing your sensible/ experienced info
Good tutorial. I was impressed with you letting the waves roll under you on the way in. All videos I have seen teach you to stay just ahead of the wave.
If I had a bigger boat Joe with more power and designed for the ocean I would approach it in a completely different way. That little boat which is designed for the Rivers and Lakes with a low flat stern and no racked bow with speed I would roll it straight over. Thanks for watching you might enjoy my other videos lots of fishing action. Tight lines Dave 👍
I'd be crying out for my mummy in swell like that in a small boat. You make it look like you're going for a stroll sight seeing. You've just earnt yourself a new subscriber. I have a quintrex 420 estuary angler I'll apply your tips to.Thank you my friend.👍👍
Thanks. Pretty similar boat set up as you and I've fished off Nobbys but only very calm consitions. May practice some rougher swell conditions without fishing gear and apply your tips. Appreciate the video. Cheers
Seriously, I like fishing but I like living better! There’s no way I’d be confident enough to do that! Having said that, I learned a lot from you. You never know what you’re going to get caught in.
Took a stacer 399 proline sport with a 30hp mercury to north reef when the harbour was closed to shipping with only an electric motor, battery and fuel tank ,couldn't see land when you went down the bottom of swell. Being able to read the sea and have good throttle control and must be on the plane,if you're not on the plane that's when you'll take on water, i don't agree with having to much weight in a small tinny as it affects throttle response From memory was about 3 to 4 metre swell with 2 to 3 metre sea. I've been fishing out of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for 35 years or so That's what i consider a calm day in the video
That’s a big effort Steve in a boat like that, I to have been at Sea all my life, in most other boats of course that is just a day you would call perhaps a little sloppy at Sea. But that 385 Explorer is flighty as fuck particularly in a following sea, no way to trim the motor a pretty flat bow and two much throttle at the wrong moment and you will broach and roll it straight over. You are right, of course trim, throttle control reading the ocean are vital. Thanks for the comment, tight lines Dave
@@aussfish9995 it was more stupid than big effort, chasing salmon just one more cast, just one more cast,oh shit I'm at North reef, you know what fishermen are like when the fish are going nuts, wouldn't like to do it again, not in seas that big. Keep up the great vids, especially trolling for snapper
Hey Mate great educational video there can you do a video on going out and coming back in on Swansea channel and nelsons bay id love to go outside in my boat to chase some bigger snapper not that the weather has ever permitted it turns into an episode of deadliest catch every time I get on the water at lake mac hahah and as I'm over 3 hours away I don't get to study other boats going through and I don't want to end up on you tube on one of those worst captains of the year videos 🤣🤣 im no beginner and my boat handles the rough stuff fairly well its a 4.2stessl runabout with a 40hp on the back but i just dont want to put my wife or my mates at risk because im ill prepared any help would be appreciated
I didn’t think u could do that with a small boat good to know now that I have a small boat and live in that area if u ever want to go out I wouldn’t mined coming alone to learn some shit before I start doing that sort of thing
Was this Thursday morning? I went down to there for a walk and the swirl was horrendous. Having never fished it yet, is genreally it pretty easy to get out there bud
I have a very small boat so you have to be careful, but yeah it’s a very good Port especially if you have a bigger boat you can fish out of it in very rough weather
Hi mate, are you standing for vision mainly? Could you do this sitting? I have a 375 dart and usually just sit down the back, haven't tried an extended Tiller yet
Great vid, and thats about as rough as I will go when I take my Bass boat outside fishing. I was always told that when comming in across the bar, to pick a good wave and stay on the back of it, dont let the following wave go under you,.. Yet you have no issues letting waves go under and ahead of you,.. are you worried about these waves causing a broach
😂😂😂 In NSW we never called then Crays always Lobsters we never called them pots always traps perhaps that’s Victorian thing and I think the Western Australian ‘s call them Crays
😂😂 You guys were using a completely different kind of trap as well I think were they like a cane bee hive shaped trap we would use a large rectangular trap made of steel wrapped in chicken wire with four half bricks for extra weight to stop them from walking a bitch to pull by hand without a winch
@@aussfish9995 Yep. thats them. In the old days (55 years ago) we made our own pots. They were as you described, round, made of cane except the necks, they were made of tea tree. For the first 3 years I pulled em by hand.
This is probably the best instructional video I have seen on managing a small boat. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it mate

Good advice in this vid,as I hope to buy a tinnie soon.
That was a good little vid mate! I enjoyed the watch!!
New to it all and this really helps. Cheers
Looks like there’s a fair bit of ballast in the middle there too 😂
There is
Thank you for the tips. Super helpful.
Hi mate, great video. Really insightful. Just out of curiosity what size tinny is that and outboard?
The mighty quintrex 385 explorer with a 2 stroke 25 horse power Yamaha 😂😂😂👊
My man's out there in an aluminium bathtub 😳🙄😅👍
You have experience and bravery
😂😂👍
Boss where you tie that rope too I like the idea 💡 I have a16 footer 25 Yamaha .
Yeah I have a 12 foot with 30 hp with tiller handle would like to know where u tie that rope
Mate that was so good I know it and old vid I'm a big boy in a small boat great advice 👍
Great video, would like to see you do a video on bar crossings.

Looks like tiller steer is the go for small tinnies in roughish conditions.
Works good
What’s that in the water at 11:58 to the left , a bloody shark or debris
It’s the float on a lobster trap 😂😂👍

Hi I can see you are using a extended tiller handle what are u holding on to for balance yourself standing up
A rope tied off a cross bollard on the bow of the boat 👍
@@aussfish9995 cheers will do that with my boat cheers
Great insight.
That is impressive boat handling. How high off the keel is the floor you are standing on? Subbed.
Not much in that style of boat 3 or 4 inches 😂😂
Hi mate, are you standing for vision mainly? Could you do this sitting?
I have a 375 dart and usually just sit down the back, haven't tried an extended Tiller yet
I’m standing like that with a tiller extension to center my weight in the boat keeps the boat more on an even keel and rides better at sea
Newy harbour?
Yeah
Hey man thanks again, love what you do good to see you with a life jacket on .
What size is your tinny please , also what size motor ?
The mighty 385 Quintrex Explorer with a 25 Horse power Yamaha 2 stroke. 😂😂😂 Gets the job done 👊
😂😂 It’s a challenge
I have a 3.8m savage with 15hp yammy 2 stroke doesnt feel small or under powered to me at all goes everywhere our old 18ft quarter cab did
Sounds like a great little boat. That’s the key loving your boat no matter what the size and having confidence in it 👍
How bigs the tinny?
3.85 sold it have a 420
Quintrex dory now
Nice just got a 3.6 with a yami 15 wanna take it to peel n harrys n mud etc glad u made the video
👍
I was thinking little boat as 10 or 11 ft
😂😂 Not quite that small
How big is that boat?
3.85 meter Quintrex Explorer
Brilliant!

Have you done any videos of how you set your tinny up for fishing.?.keep the videos coming.💪💪
Yeah the is a video on my tinny you’ll find it 👍
Hi again so the rope tied of cross bar of bow of boat to where on the back
You just hang onto the rope of the Bow Tania with one hand and hang onto the tiller steer with your other hand simple works great
"Lobster Traps"........????? You didn't hear that from your old man. Try..."Cray Pots".
