For heaven's sake... I've been fussing over the tension dial on my machine all morning, calling it all sorts of ugly names, nearly resigning myself to the fact that something's wrong with it and I'll need to have it repaired, but I decided to check RUclips just in case there's something I'm missing. I had my stupid bobbin in backward the whole time!!
1.) Why doesn't the troubleshooting portion of my user's manual even give this so much as a passing mention? It was all about the tension dial!
2.) I wish it wouldn't even be possible to draw up the lower thread if the bobbin's in backwards!
3.) Thank you so much for making this video. I owe my ol' trusty an apology.
Listen to her. She gives great pointers for smooth sewing machine stitches. Thank you for your detailed information. :-)
These are very helpful tips. You explain technical aspects that people are so wary of so well. Thank you💕
Mary, I am just a beginner at sewing and I had this same issue with tension. Watching your video helped me solve the problem. You have a new subscriber. Thank you
it took me so much time configuring the tension on my sewing machine, your tip fixed the problem immediately. you are a life saver.. thank you
A big thank you! There was one tiny minute step I was missing when placing my bobbin of my maachine....you pointed it out and just saved me from wasting more time on WHY my stitches looked so crazy! Thanks for the video!
You saved my life!!! My bobbin tension was off, which I had figured, and you showed me exactly how to fix it. Thank you sooooo much!
still my favorite quilting personality .. i pray for you every time i think of you.
You explain everything so we'll and you can always make me laugh while I learn.
You're awesome thank you for showing the part of loosening the tension on the bobbin, that really helps me with my machine!!
Thanks for the tips, did machine quilting for the first time last weekend using a walking foot and this solved my tension problem (rethreading the bobbin)
Great video! I'm learning so much from RUclips sewing videos in general, but I love the ease she gives. I feel like my friend is talking me through this!
You provided a clear and concise explanation about adjusting thread tension and the difference between the settings. I found your video very helpful!
Mary Fons you are wonderful. And thank you for your excellently produced video. I think you may have saved me a great deal of stress.
I wish I could thumbs up this 100 times! I adjusted the bobbin tension with the little screw I had no idea that it had and all my problems were solved! So glad I watched this video! Thanks!
Thank you - this calmed me down after spending a morning adjusting everything. Nice deep breath and I'm back at the right tension.
Thank you SO much for this video!!! I don't sew often, so each time I've tried to use my machine over the last couple of years, I was greeted with the same tension problem that I forgot existed. I've been sewing everything by hand because I couldn't figure out how to fix it. :( Now (I think) it's fixed!!!! It appears it was the screw on my bobbin holder! I NEVER would have thought to look at that- thank you soooo much for your help!!! :D You're awesome!
I am new to sewing and have a new Singer 2277 machine, but have not used it yet since I don't have all the required tools, thread, and material yet to begin sewing. I have not made any changes to my machine yet and probably won't if the material sews like I expect it will. In the meantime I am studying information on what to look at if there is a problem sewing. Thanks for sharing this information on the tension of the machine and how to correct the bobbin tension being too loose or tight.
Mary, Thank you so much on your demonstration on how to release some tension. I started chaining my first quilt top for my granddaughter and gave up. My bobbin tension was so tight. After I made the adjustments I'm back to becoming Grandma Of The Year!! Keep making videos for us beginners! Thank you again
Kenmore 6 stitch tension
OMG I always wondered what that little screw on my bobbin case was for. I learned something today!
Thank you soooo much for this video! I was having so much trouble with loose stitches and all I needed to do was adjust my bobbin manually!
WOW ! That last tip @ the end around 7:00 about the manual bobbin tension & the little screw that needed to be tightened was just the trick for my "nesting" problem. I have an older Singer. Now, my damned top thread will not work correctly. ... It's just a straight line. It doesn't knot w/the bottom. But the bottom bobbin looks GREAT ! TY TY
That was so useful. I've had my machine for almost a year and have just realised that I was threading the bobbin to the right instead of the left as manual says. (Old machine was different.) Many thanks, now have perfect stitches.
You've given me the confidence to figure out the tension issues I'm having.
Oh my gosh!!! Thanks for this reminder. I had globs and globs of bobbin thread on the bottom stitch and it was because my bobbin was placed on backward! Whew.
This was a wonderful tip, I don't have your machine, but my singer Quantum 9920, does have a little adjustment on the bobbin holder, it took me a while to get it right but it worked. , thank you Mary Fons!!!!
Thanks! Adjusting the screw on my bobbon worked.
Thanks for making your tutrials such fun! And I love those new words - goober??? Great stuff, many thanks.
thank you so much. new machine, something crazy going on. I rethreaded and put bobbin in again. and perfection!
Thank you sooo much for taking the time out to explain all this...you are wonderful!!
Thank you that was helpful, I didn't find the help I needed but I enjoyed actually watching Mary Fons. I thought she was good. I thought it made perfect sense... Wish I had seen it sooner, before I started messing with the tension knobs.. HRMPH!!
AHH!!!! this has helped me so much! :D I never new i had to adjust the tension on my bobbin case. very helpful, thank you so much.
Thank you so much! You solved my bobbin problem, which has had me in tears (admittedly I am 9 months pregnant and just a *little* emotional). I'm also a UChicago alumna, so loving your sweatshirt. :-)
Thank you soooooo much! I got stuck for over 2 hours and I was just about to quit before I saw your video. Your advice was perfect. Thank you thank you thank you!
Very Helpful, I kept thinking it was the tension, until I watched your video thank you so much you were so helpful!
Thank you SO MUCH! I had no idea about this, and I was doing so much of it the wrong way! This has been a big help to my and my daughter's sewing. Thanks.
Thank you for the bobbin tip. This was very helpful. Like your video.
Thank you very much this video was very helpful and I was able to correct my "tension" issue which was just needing a rethreading!!!! You rock!!!
Thank for the informations and great tips! Liz...
Perfect it was my bobbin placements! , thanks Marty! Really enjoying your videos!
Im have a problem with my singer 1507nt after one stitch the thread snaps any ideas why
So very true, almost always threading or bobbin issue. If not that, it's my needle or I need to clean my machine.
Thank you for this tutorial, helped me enormously.
Thanks mary I am a new quilter and I learn a lot from your show.
My hardly used brother machine is missing both upper and lower stitches.. i tried to change the needle and bobbin case but problem is still there... what should i do now to resolve the problem... Thanks
This helped me so much. Thanks!!!
Most helpful video ever. Thank you tons
Thanks for the tension info. Is that what you do if the thread keeps breaking?
Just the first few minutes of your video helped about the bobbin being installed incorrectly.Hmm??? I stopped the video, ran to the machine and that was the problem. I never knew it mattered. Now top and bottom stitches are properly sewn without adjusting other dials. Thanks so much.
Thank you for sharing.
Yay! Thank you! This was super helpful!!! I was getting so frustrated trying to hem a pair of jeans because I had threaded my machine wrong. I automatically thought it was a tension problem, but it turned out to be I had threaded my machine wrong.
Love this video, you really know about this tension problem , 99% as you said , bobbin problem , thanks so much
this helped so much thankyou!
I already changed the tension dial not know i wasn't suppose too. I purchase my machine hours ago and may have to take it back. :( my first machine and I've already messed up. Not sure what to do now.
thank you very much! Simply RETHREADING solved my problem!!
Mary, i have watched this brilliant video too late :`( . my puckering isn't from front to back (or vice versa), it's from side to side and i haven't a clue what to do. I have messed around, probably way too much, with all the tensions but to no avail. Can you advise me PLEASE.
PS, i have moved to Cyprus and cannot find a Machine Service anywhere.
Ok, so thanks for this Tension episode. It changed my thoughts about Tension, or what I knew anyhow. What I'm wondering about though is when you're sewing with say, denim vs. sheer fabric ~ wouldn't the tension need to change a bit for each of those?
It's also good to remember the acronym TNT, which stands for threads, needle, tension. Check the threads first, then the needle, and lastly the tension.
quick question, what would cause the needle to break all the time?
Thank u very much. Learned a lot.
This was very helpful!!! My tension is fixed- thank you so much!
Altangantig Damdinbazar and
Great advice
Thank you ! Girl you know i tell ya. Thanks again !
Oh my, sounds simple enough. Gonna go try it right now.
Nice video!
thank you!
great info
I've been drafted by my boss to film a training video about tensions for the sales people at the front counter. Thanks for saving me time. I'm telling him that I dressed in drag to film this and passing it off as my own work. Then I'm demanding a raise.
thank you soooo much
So, this is random and not related to sewing, but what foundation are you wearing? It looks great! Thanks for this video, by the way! So helpful!
Ashley Dawn I fee lost
I use a tension meter to adjust tension .... I'll try the way in the video when I get a chance to. Usually I adjust for a little over 100 grams of tension and it works ok.
that's the good thing about my sergers...i own 2 babylock evolutions...i don't have to worry about tensions since my sergers has ATD (automatic thread delivery) so it automatically adjusts the tension when it goes from fabric to fabric no matter how thick the fabris is :)
Thank you.
Screw gun! LOL Great video and tips - thank you!
Thank you! I had not had my machine out in so long that I had to reacquaint myself with it. TENSION....you were right! My problem wasn't the
IMPORTANT! Before threading your sewing machine: Always make sure your presser foot is in the up position by turning the flywheel toward you. Why is this important? It opens up your tension discs. No wonder people have thread nests! This woman babbled on for over eight minutes about tension and NEVER mentioned the thread take up lever. Yes, it is necessary to adjust the bobbin case occasionally, but most people with "tension problems" actually leave the presser foot in the down position when they thread their machine. Bad habit! Get that take up lever UP before threading and make sure you thread all of your thread guides. Happy sewing!😊
if I screw up on my sewing, most of the time is the tension setting of the thread is wrong, good video for the beginners.
You're too much fun! :)
the tension rather it was the bobbin PLACEMENT. Voilà! YAY! TFS!
You are awesome! Thanks so much, I learned a lot!
Mary you also need to say that you can always have the one (15k type or what ever) set to every day use and a second that you use for different cords on a one off basis. For the South Paw's left handed 15k's are out there, jus check to see if they fit your machine. As for the negative comments please try Alt F4.
Tell us more about the Tiara!
How to use foot bro bloom
she's right! I could have sworn it was the machine, but changing the needle was the answer!
1 rethread machine with presser foot up 2 check bobbin is a threaded correctly and b correct bobbin for the machine 3 clean out fuzz and oil if necessary
My singer machine just snaps every couple of stitches about to put it in the trash it’s singer 8280 had it for two weeks
Thank you so, so much - my machine was threaded wrong..... DERRRR
Ive always heard NEVER mess with the bobbin tention. And if yoy do, scratch a mark where its origionally at to save yourself frustration later.
i want eating ice cream with you and want more fun with you thanks for sharing good information love you honey
Crime is out of control in Chicago now with Democrat control. Use to be a bank guard there. Won’t ever return. Glad she got out safe.

AH!! thank you SOOOOO much for this video!! oh man boy is it a helper! that example you used for the bobbin is the same one i have in my singer bottom loader. im still new to sewing machines, but for the life of me i was always scared to mess with its tension. because i think mine is a tad off. usually it sews great, but when i change up fabrics/thread ect, i have to change tensions. thank you for helping me be more confident with them! :D
Thank you.
