    John was a great friend and pianist colleague. John could play anything and his interpretation of classic rag was always elegant and his subtle improv does not detract from Joplin's original intent. Brilliant pianist. As Eubie Blake dubbed him "The Chopin of Ragtime."

    Very nice. This guy clearly loved this rag, and took it to a new level of artistry without losing the intoxicating effects of the syncopation and melodies of Joplin.

    John Arpin was the first pianist I ever became a fan of and has continued to inspire me as I play these rags and gain more ability.
    Regardless of what others may think of his interpretations, in my eyes, he will forever be an easy winner of pure musicianship.
    RIP John Arpin, and thank you for your infinite inspiration.

    Both Joplin and Lamb would be so happy to hear their music played with such style and grace on a grand piano. Some of the best ragtime I have ever heard.

      Without a doubt , Mr. White, for within the playing of Mr. Arpin's reposes a whole world of mischief, grace, whimsey, and deep feeling, the likes of which we rarely encounter in this genre.

    The syncopations are some of the best I think I may have ever heard. They are played so elegantly, so seemlessly that is puts you in a trance just listening to them! What a master rendition!

    I'm so happy this exists. There are many who will play it as Scott intended and I only feel this man did Joplin a great honor by giving himself to the song and playing so intricately and beautifully. I only wish the 3rd strain had its repeat ! A privilege to hear.

    I met John at Sedalia MO at one of their festivals and was entranced by his artistry and his wry sense of humor. A real loss to all his friends and all who were fortunate to call him friend and hear him perform.

    He's not playing much of the Original Score Allthough many composers in Mozart and Beethoven's day pianist would often ab lib and Not stick to the score i like Joplins original notes better but in my opinion this is brilliant ad lib a brilliant performace

    Overworked or not, this is a fine performance.
    John Arpin was a wonderful pianist, and I'm glad to own his interpretations of Joplin's music.
    Let's leave it at that. :)

  • @russ2246
    @russ2246 15 лет назад +4

    Even Joplin didn't play the pieces as they were written (In Joplin's own piano rolls, he adds various ornaments to his own work for artistic flair).
    Non-Classical, Solo piano music in my opinion should have the basic foundation of the piece, but with one's own artistic interpretation.
    This isn't a Mozart Sonata that he's pedaling, or a Schubert waltz that he's murdering...This is ragtime, it's expressive, fun, and played at a reasonable tempo of "Not Fast".
    No hard feelings, :)

    my favourites of joplin are the maple leaf rag, the fig leaf rag and this masterpiece because its played with easy going hands but there's also a great feeling i get by hearing it!
    5* !

    right. those that usually complain and disagree should be a bit smarter than just
    throwing things out there and instead upload here and give us their definitive, authoritative,
    perfect example of how it ought to sound... wouldn't you think? but no, they are busy trolling other videos.
    The internet is full of complaining and usually nothing else.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this. Such expressiveness that it really becomes a great interpretation and makes you want to dance, think, enjoy, ETC. and hear more from the artist and also the composer. Plus, change is inevitable and only time will determine if it was for good or bad. This is a complete historic (summary) rendition for ragtime and jazz. Thanks a whole bunch for the gem!

    As a Canuck, I have to say that he is up there with anyone who plays Joplin - even though he interprets the music in his own way - the triplets, etc., are definitely NOT the original way - yet extremely enjoyable. He ought not to have died young, as he did...

    Son unas variaciones extraordinarias, pero se pierde la melodia original.
    deberia ser compositor.

    • @UltraLeetJ
      @UltraLeetJ 6 лет назад

      el comentario más chistoso que he leído hasta ahora. Y qué si me canso de la melodía original y quiero oír una perspectiva respetuosa, ingeniosa y diferente? por eso mismo es que Jhon fue un gran intérprete.
      EL internet está lleno de cosas, incluyendo la envidia.

    I'm not keen on the tempo or the embellishment, I think it detracts from the original. Definitely 'stately', but almost too stuffy.

  • @klavss76
    @klavss76 13 лет назад +3

    Personally I think this version is kinda slow and "technical".... the freshness of that song is missing here, it sounds even boring.

    • @jojoUK120
      @jojoUK120 7 лет назад +2

      klavss76 I reckon it's rag classiced up for classical fans, so it's bound to make us jazz fans cringe same as jazzed up classical often makes classical fans cringe.

    • @xXJightXx
      @xXJightXx 7 лет назад

      little jo hmm idk cos arpin plays a lot of jazz or so I can see from other videos. I love jazz and not so much classical and enjoy this very much. Embellishments are always welcome in my book.

  • @tomaszek24t
