88. Canal Capital of the World! Birmingham by Narrowboat on the BCN Old Main Line
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 авг 2024
- It's the undisputed canal capital of the world! We're heading into Birmingham by narrowboat on the BCN old main line.
We leave Dudley and head down James Brindley's winding old main line of the Birmingham Canal, passing plenty of historic architecture, the Soho, Icknield, and Ozzells Street loops, and signs of Birmingham's industrial past before we arrive right in the centre of Birmingham near the Arena.
Birmingham is the canal capital of the world, with 160 miles of canals at its height. Even though 60 miles have since gone, Colin explores some of the 100 miles of canal this historic city still has to offer, and our planned 'couple of days' in Birmingham turns into a two-week stay. Colin's sad to leave!

Boys I absolute love your videos me and my 3 year old son sit and watch these videos every Friday now the other week we went down to Wheaton Aston marina and my boy got so excited because he thought he could see silver fox sadly it wasn't you guys but I let him believe it was he couldn't wait to get home and sit and watch 3 hours of videos ... Then the video came up of you guys in Wheaton Aston he never shut up saying .... See daddy it was it was Dillon's boat . Keep up the great videos and I'm very impressed with Shaun's steering of the boat he's a master at that oh and the knowledge that Colin gives out about the canals will give the younger and older generations great insight of how canals was the motorways off the past
Awwwwwwww...! Cuteness overload! 😍
This is the BEST comment I've read for WEEKS! We'd LOVE to arrange for you and your son to come and visit narrowboat Silver Fox for a little cruise. Email us or message us on Facebook if you'd like to arrange it 👍🏻💜
I will be in touch guys I also follow you guys on face book I’m sure I sent you a pic of my boy at the Wheaton aston marina that very day he was convinced he could see silver fox hahaha
@@aaronhajzyk Yes! Hehe! I remember, he was stood by the boat with the pub and bridge in the background 👍🏻💜
“Dillon’s boat”! Hee hee! 🐾
@@sarahgardiner1649 they should nic name silver fox "Dillon's Boat" hehehe
I'm Brumie born and bred. Thank you for not bashing the heck out of it like many others feel the need to. It's changed so much over the last 60 years (as in the 60 before that) and although I've moved away now, seeing it discussed in such a positive light warms my heart. I'm very grateful to you both.
Ah, it's always been a positive experience when we go so it;s only fair to do it justice 💜
I know you love your facts!; so the scaffolding under the M5 repair was the largest single scaffolding structure ever constructed in Europe. To give some context to the size of the project; there were 500,000 scaffold fittings, 400 miles of scaffold tube, 80,000 scaffold boards which is enough to carpet eight football pitches, enough staircase were erected to get all the way to the top of Ben Nevis and Snowdon and all that bridging required 4,000 aluminium beams. All totals to around 7,000 tonnes or 500 lorry loads of scaffolding.
Wow! Just wow!
Silver Fox looked absolutely glamorous and the star travelling through the canals of Birmingham. Kudos to a beautiful lady.🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Absolutely
there is no better way to unwind after a busy week then to watch your vlogs, this one show how much you like Birmingham
good photo, nice editing music that complements the photo and interesting stories, just superb
Aww, thank you so much!
So lovely to hear you loved Birmingham, it’s a great city!
From a PRESTON lad now living down under I never thought that I would hear anyone praising BIRMINGHAM! But it's good to hear that the city is turning out to be a great place to visit. Hello to BIRMINGHAM.
Like anywhere, it's got it's good and not so good bits, but overall it was lovely :)
I’m so pleased you enjoyed Birmingham.
As a proud Brummie, it was refreshing to hear so much positivity about Birmingham instead of the usual poor press we tend to get.
We’re a friendly bunch (generally) and the city has a good vibe (though I am biased lol).
I’m almost caught up with your vids, and I have genuinely enjoyed every one.
Huge thanks for the hours of fun and viewing pleasure guys.
Brilliant. We've never not enjoyed our visits to Birmingham. Keep it lovely for us! 👋🏻
Great vlog! I loved the bit where you video the reflection in your beautiful shiny Silver Fox. I love all the history you share.
Thanks, Lois! I really love Birmingham. I could produce 100 vlogs with all the history here 👍🏻💜
Another superb video. I live (in the USA) in a town by the name of Dudley. But I like the pronunciation Colin gives it much better than the US version. The videos you two produce are so gorgeous. I occasionally drop in on one or two other narrowboat youtubers, but your videos (the photography, narration, and interesting bits and bobs of history) are far superior. Bravo, gentlemen!
Aww, that's so very kind of you to say. THANK YOU! 💜
What a fantastic vlog!! Here I am at 3 am in Massachusetts watching the best narrow boat vlog on RUclips.
Your choice of video/music is awesome! I made my lock screen in my iPhone your Birmingham photo. The best!!!
Thanks, Thomas. This one is a bit like the alternate world Peak Forest vlog. I loved it here and loved making the vlog even though it's city, not countryside. x
I’m a Brummie and it was so great to see you both enjoying our great city. We sometimes get a bad press, but usually from people who haven’t been. I’m a new sub and loving you vlogs and a big thank you for ‘bigging up’ Birmingham 👍👍
Our pleasure! We love Brum! 👍🏻
I love your freedom to go to the country & visit the city too. Glad you had such a great time! Super interesting history, thanks.
Thanks, Jeff. Yeah, lots of history in Birmingham. Enough to fill 100 vlogs! 👍🏻
As a local, it's lovely to hear some positivity about the West Midlands for once!
We love Birmingham!
Absolutely. Birmingham is a misrepresented city! Since this filming the Commonwealth Games has done wonders for the image of Birmingham
I just love the contrast between old and new on the Old Main Line
Yeah, still changing too. Lots of development taking place, especially around the Icknield Loop.
The M5/railway/canal shot encapsulates how the UK made itself smaller and smaller...and with the canals still being used as waterways for leisure and living the (now) slowest advancement in making the UK smaller is still beautifully viable.
Well said that man 👉🏻
Another brilliant Vlog. It was great that you enjoyed Birmingham. We find that some of our trips are special and we don’t always realise we are so in love with the places until we leave. Have a good week and stay out of the wind 💨 😄 Trev n Sue
Thanks guys! Yeah, we’re safe from the storm! 💜
Hello lads loved birmingham .and you done it proud .☺
Cheers, Victor. yeah, we loved it.
Stumbled across your series on prime about 2 months ago, once that was finished I was straight on here. Watching it every day.
Cannot get enough of it
Awesome, welcome to our channel, Kevin. More seasons on Amazon Prime to come too xxx
I couldn't help but notice how clean the a canal and the streets were.. Another great video. Love you guys.
Cheers, Dean. Yeah very clean! 🧼
Probably my favourite vlog of yours to date.
The bustle of large cities can be very trying at times but in Birmingham, its very easy to step out of the race to the refuge of the calming effect of a canal towpath. Im sure Birmingham is looking forward to your return as much as you are to it.
P.S that was a lovely offer you made to Dillons youngest fan of the mini cruise. Well done guys. Looking forward as always to next week.
Yeah, I think that's why I love Birmingham. So peaceful on the boat, but only minutes away from the centre. x
Fun times! Loved the upside down parting shot.
Haha! Well spotted!
@@FoxesAfloat 😉
@@FoxesAfloat just post a 10 minute video of that inverse bow shot... want to steal it as my screen saver loop
So, so professional chaps. Love it. Funny, charming, educational. Makes everyone want to buy a canal barge and discover Britain and beyond. Awesome. Keep posting.
Thanks, Russ, although I hope not everyone buys a narrowboat 😂
Foxes Afloat Me too. Are you going down south this year ?
I’m entertained and informed by your videos. This one brought back happy memories as I attended Edgbaston Preparatory School for Boys (Hallfield) back in 1964. I remember doing a hike along the path next to a canal somewhere out in the countryside with a Boy Scout friend. It was a glorious day that I shall never forget. Been back in the states these last 50+ years and now have a burning desire to do a return visit to Birmingham and also cruise some of your beautiful canals. Love your intellect, the history you provide and your sense of humor - well done lads.
Thank you, Brad. Hope you manage to get back to Birmingham xx
Absolutely 'Bostin' vlog. We love Brum too. Oh and it's Duddlaay x 👍😁
Yay! That you approve means everything! 💜 Duddlaaaaaaaay! 😂😂😂 xxxx
@@FoxesAfloat don't get too far away from us xxx
@@FloatingOurBoat I think we did! ☹️
I'm so glad you like Birmingham! It's my home town, and as a Brummy I'm so used to just hearing people slagging the place off (usually people who have never been!). Loving your videos, I'm watching them all out of order though so seeing Dillon in this one brought a little tear to my eye 😥 bless him.
I've cycled almost all of the hundred surviving miles of the BCN, and I remember cycling through netherton tunnel a few years back! It's so long you can't see the light at the end for ages, but when you come out the other end you are in a cute little place called Bumble Hole!
Nice one! Yeah, we love Brum. Can't wait to return!
I was in tears at 09:03 typical yorkshire lads sailing about with the BREWS !!!! in hand fantastic keep em coming love the history guys xxxx
Haha! We go through more brews 😂
Really enjoyed watching this episode as an exiled Brummie. FWIW .. there used to be a nightclub, the Opposite Lock, in Gas Street Basin ( just by the lamp @ 15:57 in video) during the 60s & 70s. The entrance/exit was on the towpath and it was a reasonably regular occurrence for someone to tip into the cut in the wee small hours when drunkenly leaving, and the occasional shoulder-barge was sometimes to blame. 😉
Haha1 I think that still happens 😂
spot on great one again gents look forward to your vlogs every week, keep them coming would not be the same without them, take care both and the little critter look after the old lad digle that is.
Haha! We're all good, and thank you, Albert! x
I'm always impressed with the fantastic filming quality, lots of new creative angles too. Your videos are like works of art in my opinion. You've practically ran a marathon to get all those great shots of the boat going by.
Thanks, Mike. Yeah, I start with about 20 hours of footage.
Never has the M5's backside looked so good. It's fascinating seeing things from a different viewpoint 🙂
It really is!
Birmingham is not how I imagined it to look, it's looking much better and thriving, and so busy. Dillon never fails to make me smile, always looks like he's enjoying his adventures, the third member of a brilliant trio. 😉
Love him so much! 💜
Coffee, donuts & The Silver Foxes. I love my Friday mornings. Cheers guys.
I WANT DONUTS! 😋
Another very nice vlog guys. Many interesting facts surrounding the history of the canals in and around Birmingham. Looks a very thriving and interesting place to visit.
We could have spent a month there quite easily had it not been for overstaying! 😂
A Breath of fresh air when you three are on , a other great vid
Thanks, John!
Another groovy adventure by the Foxy Twins. Like all your videos, I love your humor, the film footage, and of course, the history of the places you visit. As The Beatles use to say, everything you two do together is so 'Gear and Fab'.
Haha! Thanks, Mark 👍🏻
Absolute stellar video!!! You lads continue to excel in your productions. Love all the details, all the beautiful reflections both in the country and under the motorway and in the beautiful city. Simply gorgeous! Favorite scene is the clip at the very end where everything is upside down and magical... would love to see that without the text overlay sometime. Thank you so much for your artistry and enthusiasm! 💖
It's very much our pleasure. We love to make these videos and it's even better to get feedback like yours. Thanks!
Loved this one and Birmingham looks like a great place.
We love it in Birmingham!
Friday night is Foxes Afloat night. Vegitable
curry last night. Got it just right, so had you pair. You are rapidly becoming a tradition. Thank you. Enjoyed the vblog (as usual)
Hehe! Friday night with the Foxes. Sounds like a TV show waiting to happen 😂
@@FoxesAfloat It's Friday, It's Curry Night and it's Foxes Afloat.... If this turns out like the Walton, I'm going back to Strictly Come Dancing 😁 You are much appreciated, that's all I'm saying.
I'm a bit of a geek for industrial heritage, that was amazing to see the old contrasted with the new Birmingham .
Glad you enjoyed it, Eddie x
Great video boys. I love the way Birmingham has embraced the canals. For me, it's the beating heart of the city.
Love Birmingham!
Oh Wow. Your bow shots are stunning.Yur videography just gets better and better, and the transition to google maps is inspired. Please show us how you did it PLEEAAASSSE.
He he... maybe in a future vlog 😉
That's for sure!
This Really is my Most Watched Vlog of yours. Love it. We did the Black Country Ring because of you and This Vlog. And I can’t wait to do it again. Thanks again for introducing me to the Magical World of Narrowboating.
It’s our absolute pleasure!
As I catch up on your previous videos I'm continually struck by the quality of the cinematography and the aptness of the historical photos inserted as you narrate. I'll probably never visit England and your videos really bring it alive for me.
Aww, Thanks so much!
great production, that B Roll is exceptional. well done.
Cheers, Jack. I don’t even know what B Roll is but glad I’m doing it right 😂👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed Birmingham (my home town) you will have passed where I live at Port Loop (I live right by the canal). Great video as always!
Ah, you should have been waiting with cake 😂
I allow myself one or two maximum of your vlogs a day. Where we are down in the South of Spain our rivers are normally dry and there would never be enough water for a canal. The last time our river (the Andarax) was navigable was in Roman times. Your films are a little bit of cultural sunshine. Really nice work chaps.
Thanks so much! 👍🏻
The canal under the M5 (Oldbury) is right behind me as I write this from my truck at DPD... Loved it... 💙💙
Hehe, wow!
I love all your stories and information. Please tell the stuff you know and don't worry about those that must correct you, think of it as teaching Jane! Jane wants to know about the locks and canals and narrowboats. Poor ole Jane got stuck in a wheel chair two years ago and only travels now through you fellas. And hey, Jane can tell a whopper with the best of them, so who cares if you are right or wrong, make it a good story.
Thank you so much, Jane!
Oh my goodness, you were in Birmingham at the same time as us 😱 Our boat features at 16:06 - I can’t believe we missed you passing by! 😭❤️ Fantastic video, looks like you had an awesome time in Birmingham! Bringing Narrowboat Silver Fox here for the first time must have been really memorable ☺️ Will you be heading down Tardebigge now or turning off at Kings Norton? Either way we look forward to the next leg of your travels!
Ah, yeah, we remember you were there the whole two weeks we were 😂 Can't say which way we're going yet (spoilers), but it would have been great to say hello 👋🏻 xxx
Foxes Afloat ...and some 😅 We had some battery problems so had an overstay in Birmingham. We didn’t really venture up towards the Sea Life too much but I do recall a fairly large silver grey boat with portholes passing by and now I’m thinking it must have been you! That’s completely understandable, we will eagerly await the next episode 😁 It would have been so lovely to say hello - hopefully we’ll bump into you again someday! ❤️ xxx
@@TheLiveaboardFamily Do you get any trouble moored there? We were going to move around there because the Internet was terrible by the arena but were put off by the bars and cafes by Mailbox and the Cube.
Foxes Afloat I can’t say we had much trouble which was surprising really! We had one chap sit on our boat although that was relatively harmless. We did have one night where someone was throwing a large rock at the window outside our boat but Dan went out and diffused the situation somewhat (at least enough to stop him throwing the rock). Apart from that’s its been okay although you do get a little noise from the bars and night clubs towards the Mailbox. The internet was pretty terrible for us. Our Three wifi device just wouldn’t work but EE was just about usable. We were thinking about moving up towards the Sealife a bit in search of better internet but it sounds as if it was just as bad where you were 😔 xxx
Thank you for such positive comments about our city. The city centre canal structure is wonderful and well respected by the locals.
We always love coming to Birmingham! 💜
Beautiful yet again lads love the arty shots
Thanks, Phil. Maybe there was something in my coffee that morning 😂
there's some simply brilliant camera work in the video, amazing...well done!
Thank you so much! 💜
@@FoxesAfloat Yes get your act together 🤣🤣🤣
Glad you enjoyed my home city. I cycle alot on those mean towpaths. Anyway when you approached Rotton Park Junction you would have gone past a brick pillar in the middle of the canal. This carried a railway back in the 1880's to Harborne and there was an accident at the canal junction and one of the bridges is different after a coal wagon derailed and too the bridge out. You were headed down the Worcester & Birmingham which passes close by to where I live.
Edit to add at 13.35 you can see the bridge when the train is passing 😉 look at the other bridges and you will see they are more rounded.
Ah right, yeah I remember the middle of the bridge!

Aww, sorry to hear that! Dillon has been cuddled 👍🏻💜
Thanks for the memories. We did this in October all be it the other way round, starting at Edgbaston and finishing at John the Lock moorings. One lasting memory was the underwater triffids growing in the old main line, had to clear the weed hatch twice.

Got sent here from your recent video about the bridges, didn't realise you had been to Tipton! (Only a recent convert to your channel).
I've worked in metal bashing in tipton for 30 years and kayaked the canal once and despite its heavy industry and some run down areas the canal still holds my attention whenever I walk down at lunch.
If you are ever back i will give you a tour of a 70 year old metal shop !.
Nice one. Thank you!
I agree, Birmingham is a great city. I used to go quite often for work and loved the atmosphere around the canals. They were re-building New St Station when I last went. Badly needed!
It looks very space-age now. It's got a big massive eye with a telly in it! Groovy! 😂
