  • When gouache or watercolor dries up in the tube, you can cut them open and convert them to pans. What you need: Empty pans, scissors, ex-acto knife, dropper, clean water, brush and a mortar & pestal or a cup and something. to smash paint with. Use whatever you have around. You can also use old makeup palette containers for this....anything you can find that you can use: give it a try!

Thank you. I’m new to gouache and have put off opening my new set of 24 Holbein colors for fear of causing them to dry. I’ve been painting in watercolors for several decades and found certain pigments like cobalt violet get hard really quickly. I haven’t thrown them out because like you said artist quality paints are extremely expensive. I have a weekend project to look forward to 😂

Thank you for the video! I just threw away some tubes that given to me, with dried up paint stuck in very old oxidizing lead tubes (yes actual lead)! Oops!
I think the only thing I would change/note would be maybe wearing mask and gloves and doing this outside if you're working with cadmium pigments?

I have a set of Winston and Newton tube paints that I'm sure are dried out (10+ years old). Thank you for showing me the easy way to use them

Hi, Samantha! I'm new to filling pans with the tube watercolor and here is what I'm facing... My tubes are quite old-anywhere from 8 to 30 years old. I've seen some videos like yours for reconstituting totally dried out paint (and I'm holding those ones aside to do someday!), but MANY of the other ones I have are like thick paste. I have a tool to help push the paint fully out of the tubes, and I try to push it into the corners to eliminate air, but it's still leaving occasional gaps. I've added water a drop at a time, but then it balls up around my pin/toothpick, and doesn't necessarily get an even consistency. Here are my two questions:
    1) So many people talk about getting the air bubbles out...Why is it so important to eliminate the air bubbles or does it really matter?
    2) Is it bad for me to just put the paste in the pans rather than rewet them, if it's only going to take longer for them to dry out anyway? (and then they tend to crack)
    Thanks!

I have a problem with gouache drying up in the tubes after just a few months. I end up buying a new tube and it gets too expensive. I gave up using it because of this problem. I buy a good brand WN and keep the caps on tight but it doesn't seem to matter. Is there anything I might be doing wrong that causes the paint to dry out? Thank you for your helpful video on how to salvage dried out gouache in the tubes.

I got a set of gouache in tubes that's quite dried up, from a friend who moved overseas. I've been wanting to try gouache for ages so I'll definitely be doing this ❤️

Wow, not even a "hey guys" in the beginning of the video? Thats a very bad first impression ur leaving here.
Also, adding just a bunch of water to the gouache kinda makes it all watery and not very creamy. Maybe starting out with less water then mixing it a bit then if necessary adding more water makes more sense to achieve the right amount of creaminess.
