  • Hey there, welcome to our RUclips channel where we discuss the most controversial topics. Today's video is all about why Nevada has a small population, and let's just say that the answers might surprise you.
Many people believe that the reason Nevada has a small population is because of its vast deserts and unforgiving climate. But we're here to tell you that's not always the case. The real reasons are much more controversial and taboo.
So, buckle up and get ready for a controversial ride as we explore Nevada's small population.

i’ve lived in Nevada for about 20 years and this is all pretty spot on, one big thing he didn’t touch on is how questionable the drinking water is in a lot of these small towns close to old mines. Do a bit of reading on the cancer rates in Yerington and Fallon and you’ll know exactly why there’s not a lot of people in Nevada.

I remember flying to Vegas from Vancouver B.C. in 1975. The plane only had 30 or 40 seats. If you could show the pilot that you had $500 cash on you the flight was free. Obviously one of the casinos was paying this pilot or airline to bring gamblers to sin city. When we landed I was surprised at how small the Vegas airport was. And I will never forget what happened next. There were slot machines in the airport lobby and while we were waiting for our luggage to come down the ramp some of the guys started playing the slots. One of my buddies won $1000 on the second dime he put in the slot machine. When he got his luggage he boarded the next plane home again with out ever leaving the airport. He had recently been laid off from his job and $1000 was a lot of money in 1975.

0:59 A lot of the time, when people discuss Nevada, they only are really discussing the Las Vegas area, and the southern Nevada region. For example, at this point in the video, it discusses the temperature as being one of the biggest reasons people do not relocate to Nevada, since the average temperature is over 100 degrees. That's true in southern NV, which is on the eastern edge of the Mojave desert, which is some of the most brutal desert land in the world. Life in Reno/Sparks, however, in the more mountainous northern NV areas (along I-80, as opposed to I-40) are much cooler, topping out at an average of 95 with only a scant few days reaching triple digits. Basically, similar temps to So Cal. Of course, you need to deal with elevation, and in the winter this does mean snow, and not a little of it either.

As others have stated you really mesh Las Vegas with the rest of the state and I get it, it is the biggest population center. But not all stats you said apply to Reno. According to TMWA our local water provider, we have enough water for the next 30 years. They planned ahead and have many dams up near Truckee and lots of underground aquafers. The last 10 years have seen a huge diversification of jobs coming with most of the big tech companies having something going on. The downtown has been under renovation for some time now. The southwest side of town backs up to the Carson range which can be fairly green, and we are only 40 minutes to Incline Village and Lake Tahoe. Summers are no worse than Central California and usually cooler. We have all the chain restaurants and lots of individual run ones, most of the big stores, live entertainment and of course the casinos. Lots of trails, hiking, fishing and hunting if that is your thing. Moved here 15 years ago from California and I thought it would be as you described, brown, ugly casinos, smoking. Earthquakes are barely noticeable, nothing like California. Weather wise the biggest thing is sometimes heavy snow and the big fires in California send smoke our way that can linger here similar to what happens in the Medford, Oregon area. Otherwise, the sky is big and beautiful with great clouds. Long tirade but wanted to add my 2 cents.

Hey Briggs, great video! As someone from California, I have considered moving to Nevada (primarily because it's cheaper, but I also fell in love with the landscape). On my first road trip out there, I was 19, and that first desert highway was like nothing I have ever seen. The road stretched for miles (I would guess 25-30 at least), and there was no traffic, buildings, or _anything_ resembling civilization anywhere in sight -- only shrubs and hills. It was truly magnificent.
Over the course of two more road trips, I have now traveled almost every paved highway criss-crossing that state (that's hardly a boast; there aren't very many to begin with 😅). I can recall visiting the town of Hawthorne for the first time, and just thinking how (again, as someone from California Central Valley) the people living there are so isolated from the rest of society. You would have to travel over 100 miles just to get to the closest mid-size city (Reno). If you don't have your own private vehicle, forget it. And just thinking about the costs of maintenance, gas, time, etc. to travel that far on a regular basis to do things the rest of us take for granted . . . wow. Perhaps the most remarkable, however, was the town of Rachel, which is the ONLY sign of civilization along a 95-mile stretch of road (375, the Extraterrestrial Highway). And the closest major city? Las Vegas, at almost 150 miles. Still, I absolutely love the beauty, and as someone who dislikes urban environments, I'm not exactly repulsed at the idea of living somewhere rather off the beaten path, so-to-speak. But that might be a little much, even for me. Anyways, I love that you covered this in such detail, and keep up the great work!
P.S. I can confirm that 98% of the state looks _exactly_ like what you see at 8:34, only that most roads are two-lane highways rather than Interstates (this looks like I-80 to me, though I couldn't even begin to guess where). And yes, in case you were wondering, I have slightly exceeded the 70 mph speed limit at times, though I won't say by how much. Fortunately, I've never been caught while in Nevada (I have in Oregon and Idaho). Here's an interesting fact: a 2017 Ford Fusion is capable of traveling in excess of 120 mph quite easily.

I've lived in Nevada my entire life (30-plus years), and now, it's complicated. Night and day, in fact. I moved back here after 10 years, and I am still in shock at how the prices in Reno/Sparks, even in LV, have absolutely blown up. I think this is perhaps the biggest complaint of all Nevadans. There is simply not enough infrastructure to support her growing population.
There's absolutely no reason for the cost of living to be so high here, especially for what you get! In South Reno alone, there are miles upon miles of multimillion dollar mansions (homes more than $500k) that are now abandoned, thanks to Californians paying cash and then leaving the state. Why? Most people who move to Reno (transplants) have no idea that it snows here for six months out of the year. In general, unless you have more than $375-400k in your pocket, or willing to pay more than $1700/month in renand you don't want to live in her rural towns (Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Ely etc.) it's fairly impossible to find any place to live in Nevada. It is true that Nevada has a certain beauty of its own, but most people just aren't used to it. It's stark and very alien compared to many places.
Simply put, I wish more people would do their research before moving here. Don't assume everything is California. Mentally, the two states are worlds apart. I'll probably come back to visit in another 10 years, just to see what's happened to her, but unless prices go down (which won't happen), I will never come back to live here again.

As for Cost of living, our issue in Vegas is lack of room to build houses, and after that, sufficient roads to get to far flung neighborhoods. We are butting up against the mountains in nearly all directions. Except the Northern Sheep mountains, but you are underneath air force jets carrying bombs, so not as many people want to live there. The reason cost of living is high is similar to California. They aren't building enough new homes and apartments.

I'm grateful I enjoyed Tahoe before it became Silicon Sierra! Another issue: in a winter like this, if you need to get to Sacramento or the Bay Area, you have to traverse a mountain pass (e.g., Donner Pass, Echo Summit). Several times this year, those roads have closed due to excessive amounts of snow. So access is reduced, thereby making Reno feel pretty isolated.

A lot of what Briggs says is accurate, however not all. I lived in Las Vegas for 31 years, I saw it go from a wonderful place to grow up in during the late 80's and 90's. Starting in the 2000's the illegals came in and it really destroyed many of the neighborhoods. After hurricane Katrina a lot of undesirables ended up in Vegas. Today Las Vegas is full of illegals, tweakers, scam artists, homeless and general criminals. The part he's wrong about is Las Vegas having a higher cost of living versus northern rural Nevada towns. The cost of just about everything is cheaper in Las Vegas. All utilities including power, water, natural gas, etc. I moved to a wonderful Northern Nevada City of approximately 25k people and it's a completely different place. People are friendly, the weather is much nicer with four seasons and the quality of life went up 10 fold compared to Vegas. The utilities are definitely higher as is a trip to the grocery store. Property taxes are higher as well. With this said, the higher cost of living is worth every penny to leave Vegas behind. I'd also like to mention that generally speaking Nevada is one of the safest places to live when considering natural disasters. Also unlike what Briggs mentioned there are every aspect of employment here. It is however hot in the summers, but nothing like Southern Nevada. It actually gets chilly at night being a high desert. Other Cities and towns are a bit of a drive, but it's worth it, especially if you enjoy seeing wild horses and wide open spaces.

“Grown men crying while waiting for a flight home”…… best reason EVER to get a round trip, prepaid ticket.
And at least don’t get too excited over free drinks while gambling, and ESPECIALLY leave your major credit card back at home and bring a low credit limit card instead.
Figure out what you are willing to lose while sober and take cash. And always remember.. these beautiful casinos are NOT paid for with winners like you expect to be in the morning. Or more likely… “winning my money back” players.
“I love going to Vegas and visiting the money I used to own” is a great temporary tattoo on your forehead to get at the airport BEFORE you leave it to go have a good time in Lost Wages, Nevada.

I lived in Vegas ‘02-08’ from NY area. I agree that outside the Vegas Metro area is essentially nothing. Yea, there’s Mt. Charleston if you need a snow fix but beyond that it’s hours of driving to get anywhere. It’s culture I felt was “manufactured” and not curated. As a local, you avoided the Strip unless someone was visiting. That left boring neighborhoods with little culture. Although it has improved over the years it’s still limited.

So much changes here for the past decade; it's an endless housing development and just to show the demand. Southwest, Blue Diamond was 2 lane road in the early 2000; now that changed to a 6 lane. In a way it's good as it brings value to properties, but it's getting overcrowded; thankfully invested on 2 houses, 1 fully paid the other halfway, early 2010, during the housing bubble.

But the rest of the state...spectacular desert/mountain wide open spaces and if you like National Parks but not the crowds try Great Basin N.P. in eastern Nevada. Visited there a couple years ago in autumn and practically had the place to ourselves. Beautiful autumn colors in the forests, fantastic hiking, we only wish we'd stayed longer. There's a subject for you, underused, lesser known National Parks for folks to explore and Great Basin would have to be near the top of that list.

Tow truck picked up my car from the hotel, and I just figured I’d take the public transportation bus system to go pick it up afterwards. HOLY SHIT!!! Nothing like riding a public bus down to the transfer station, wait 20 minutes for your next bus ride out to where your car just got repaired to really give you a sense of what a city is like. It was a freaking scary 2 hour experience. I would NEVER ride that bus system again… I’m only a 6’3” 210# dude in pretty damn good shape… but I didn’t have a weapon to help me not be worried about my safety.
