Kalalau Trail - When A Storm Hits

- Even with best laid plans, you can't control the weather.
This was our experience when a storm hit the north shore of Hawaii's Kauai island a day before forecasted, leaving us and a number of other hikers stranded on the Kalalau Trail overnight.
We battled treacherous paths and 100km/h wind gusts as we navigated back from the beautiful Kalalau Beach.
you know, there is a wonderful phrase all responsible hikers use: " No. It's too dangerous. Let's go around or go back. It's not worth the risk. We can try again later when the weather clears up."
In Hawaii, we pay attention to the weather first before making any plans. Very important.
He said that they checked all the forecasts. Still--there's no way I'd have attempted that muddy, steep section in those conditions. They'll still be there the next day.

Was thinking of attempting this solo in February (I’m an experienced backpacker). After watching this, maybe not.
We brought our Kahtoola Microspikes with us to Hawaii for hiking. We didn't hike this trail, but the spikes came in handy when hiking other very slippery muddy trails on that island. Other hikers were falling all over themselves and we just trudged by them without any problems. They couldn't figure out how we were doing it.
ive done this trail once before in 2015 and the weather was great but seeing this video i could definitely imagine what you were going through considering ive been in a similar situation in kokee on a 90 degree slope with thousand of feet beneath me. great job and im glad you guys got out safe but next time just wait for the storm to pass because its not worth becoming another statistic at the end of the day alot of people die on this trail every year so to anyone thinking of doing it you must be incredibly mindful along with understanding the contingent nature of our weather in hawaii mahalo

Great video... EXACT same thing happened to us... December 9-12, 2011. And you are spot-on... the oft touted crawlers ledge was a piece of cake compared to the muddy, 6" wide trails that were getting washed out and sloped DOWN toward the ocean... but that said... I'd go back and do it again... just would hope for better weather! Thanks for the video... nicely done!

I have hike the entire 11 miles round trip three times back in the 80s and 90s. This was before all of the erosion that is shown in this video. Though there were a few dicey areas, it was MUCH safer than it's current state. I think the trail should be closed at this point.

wholly cow...that is intense and one the scariest things I've ever watched. Kalalau trail is a bucket list for me but with my fear of heights I think I would have been Paralyzed! But love the Comraderie of all of you helping each other! Awesome video!!

Always a good investment to have spiked footwear when hiking kauaʻi and Oʻahu. Can really save you on the muddy and slippery sections.
Do you have a good one to recommend?
@@Seanonyoutube I use the spiked tabis with the split toe (i think the company is called daido?). Otherwise, having cramp-ons works as well for dirt banks. Some of the conservation people get danner boots and then get custom long spikes put in the tread.

We locals we wear spiked shoes or what we call tabis they grab on to rocks and slippery mud to give you sure footing. You should try a pare sometime!

The whole way I kept imagining what it would be like if it were raining. I had packed so much extra gear just in case and it was spot dry the whole way. Can’t imagine that last section by kalalau beach wet and muddy 😳👀👀

Same thing happened to us in mid Nov ‘19...We had it worser at the beach. It was quite an adventure.

Kalalau is closed off during winter because of weather and winter swells. What were you guys doing there in the first place?
