Hi KD!!! Yesssss...the clay peeps community is growing and everyone is soooo helpful and encouraging! Reading the comments is so inspiring and encouraging to me so thank you!!! I took the last week off filming as I just wanting to play and experiment without thinking about camera angles and stuff... but will pick it back up again and have something out soon...🤪 😉
I absolutely love your videos and ceramic pieces 😍😍. Did you ever try to look on crystals under microscope? They are amazing 🤩🤩It’s probably not something a costumer will do, but for us potters it’s like fantasy world )))
Thank you Gabriella! Never thought of it doing that, I'll give it a go...I'm sure it will be gorgeous, like looking at a snow flake under magnification! It's a whole new world..Thanks for the suggestion! xo
I love Peppered plum and Amarillis also! I just did a bunch of testing with them and I’ve tried using the flux blossom over them which I liked a little better. I don’t know if you have tried that yet. Thank you for sharing! I love all the pinks!💞
I really liked all the pottery in this one, even the ones you weren't keen on. I quite liked the little black clay cups. They were lovely but my fav was the last few you have yet to add to your collection in the peppered plumb.
Thank You Tegan!! the little cups have grown on me! I've been doing so much bright colours lately that when muted things come out of the kiln I don't know how to respond to ti right away! I appreciate your encouragement!!
I just LOVE your forms. Your mugs are gorgeous! Sorry the speckled clay is causing grief. I will say though that purple crystal bluish mug is delish! I get pinholes with speckled 50/50 but I use Ky mudworks speckled turtle it’s less speckled
Thank you sooooo much!!!! I wish we got KY Mudworks up here in Canada I'd love to try it! I'm definitely going to be using the purple crystal more..what a winner and I bought it on a total whim! I was soooooo happy with the way they turned out I will continue to use the new Amaco Fluxes as a base with the speckled clay as it really seems to agree with it.
I really enjoy your content! If you’re still struggling with the firing of the long spoons: you may have tried this, but it seems that you could rest them in a large stilt that allows the top and bottom to show. The interior hole of the stilt would just need to be big enough to put the end of the spoon through (I have square stilts with a 1” opening). Then cookies under the glazed top and bottom.
Hi Katrina! Sorry for the delay in my response😬 With that said..thank you for your suggestion. I have in fact done just that and had much success. I refied a few and they straightened up beautifully too! With the exception of my last firing where the ends were just a smidge too big to fit inside so I lay them on top of a kiln support, no pock marks but they warped dreadfully. Thank you again, I appreciate you taking the time to connect! Cheers!
Hey Sarah love love love all the pink!! You need to get yr hands on spectrum soft red u will love it girl! Have a look at the first piece on my #40 unload I bet u will love it! Nat xx
Oh and u know how u say about refiring if u have pin holes. Do u literally just refire or add more glaze first? I didn’t know too that if u get the frothing (great term!) refiring will fix that too?
Hi Nat! Thank YOU!!! I've added Spectrum Soft Red to my shopping list! Thanks for the suggestion i agree I think i'll love it... To answer your questions, sometimes I just pop the piece right back into the kiln and refire (no glaze added - the flower cups) other times I'll brush glaze into the holes and refire...My large vase was refired 3 times, this time it came out worse, I didn't add glaze on this fire, but I did add a couple of coats on top of the frothing for the 2nd glaze fire and it leveled out quite a bit, but I doubled-down and lost when I threw it in again...I think the glaze/clay combo just werent compatible. oh well, live and learn right? 🥰
Yeah that vase looked like bigger than pin holes tho it was weird. Maybe u r right, wrong clay fit 🤷♀️. Can’t wait to see what u get w soft red I’m gonna experiment layering it more xx
I'm sure someone has suggested this already, but Kemper makes little stilt mark remover sticks. They are only a couple of bucks and they gently sand down the points.
Oh Thank you for this suggestion! I typically use my Dremel but the stilt mark remover sounds better...I'll add it to my pottery shopping list!! Thanks!
Beautiful pottery ❤ I feel your frustration with pin holes they are annoying. But keep making these wonderful videos and thank you for explaining what glazes you used and how you used them. 🙏
Another great video , what is your favorite pieces throw ? mugs , cups etc .. ? I really like your bathroom cups ! How do you discard your “Box of Doom “ ?
Hi Shawn! Hummm, my favourite pieces to throw are bottles. I find it's challenges different skills as you need to collar in and leave enough clay so it doesn't collapse, and you can make so many different shapes. I just finished throwing a whole series of handled oil bottles...they still need to be bisqued as they are slowly drying...almost ready. As for my 'Box of Doom" lol (do you like that name...haha) I not sure what i'm going to do, I may do a mosaic or something like that..any ideas??
Ok, I can watch early!! so, throw your own stilt cylinders to stand the salad servers up in since you don’t glaze the handles! Girl we are on the same rainbow glaze wave! I filmed a short but not a kiln opening…and Wow that honey flux, fairy rose and purple crystal😮!! So unexpected and I’m all about the holy complicated lol…loved it, beautiful job
Hi Starlynn! Thank you gurl, your support means the world to me!! I saw your video with the gorgeous rainbow glaze combo...WOW! Ya, even tho we're heading into fall up here in Canada I'm all about the bright colours, now when i pull out something that is more muted it takes me a min to process🤭. I just love colour and movement! Thanks for that idea about throwing cylinders...great idea!
I love your videos, your colours are gorgeous- I always end up with dark and "meh". I want to get that Archies base as it seems to really lift the colours, but I can't get Coyote in the UK 😒 Please sell this kiln (used kilns fetch good prices) and get a new, BIG, automatic one- I'm sure you won't end up refiring nearly as much.
Hi Hayley!! Thank you so much!! I REALLY want a new kiln so I just have to make some more $$$ to afford, they are $7000 once fitted with the kiln furniture and venting...soon! I hope you are able to fix your 'meh' results, I'm thinking that you may need to apply thicker coats of the glazes, that should also bring up the vibrancy of the colour...just a thought. 🥰
Hello Sarah. I love your glaze combos and will be trying them next week. Regarding pinholes: outgassing may cause pinholes in the glaze if your bisque was fired to 06 instead of 04. Do you fire your bisque to 06 or 04? Just learned this last week... 😊. Love your channel
Hi Margaret, Thank you so much for your kind words! I actually fire to ^04 for my bisque. In fact some of these pieces I did 2x bisques and went slow to help offgas the clay. Speckled clay is notorious for pinholes that coupled with not getting back to my kiln for the hold 🤪 (to help the glaze 'heal over') contributed to the problem 🥹 I'm sooo pleased to hear you enjoy my channel!! 🥰
hey how about u put an alarm next to u before u sleep when u do a slow fire it'll wake u up and then u can switch it i dont think your clay or glazes are misbehaving its maybe the kiln . the results are beautiful
Hi Tonie...believe it or not, I have an apple watch and had set a timer to go off hourly, and I was on the couch with the tv on...and slept right through it 😵💫 What can i say...I'm a deep sleeper 🤭 I'll take your advise next time tho and set the alarm on my phone, which is louder...🤪
I'm not exactly sure either...I wish I had your results...I have an older 1961 manual kiln and have had some trouble getting back to do a hold. It could also be an issue with the speckled clay body that i've been using...still trying to figure it out!
I LOVE the spoon. There are kiln stilts that are made just for firing spoons but they are for smaller spoons. You can maybe look them up and see if they have longer ones? If you’re having problems with your kiln not staying hot long enough you can put kiln posts on there between pots. They hold heat longer than the actual pottery because they are so dense and thick. Just a suggestion. Have you thought of getting just the controller for your kiln?
Hi Michele! What a great idea about adding kiln supports...I'll try that! Someone suggested that I throw a cylinder to stand my utensils up, so I'm going to try that. I read your message when you sent it but wasn't able to sit and respond to my comments until now. I'm saying this because you had me thinking all week about getting a controller....what a great idea! Thank you!!! 🥰
@@SarahWaltonPottery OH IM SO glad I could help!! If you stand anything up in the kiln, like the plates I think you did, you have to make sure they’re exactly on their sides so they won’t warp.
Hi Sarah,Thank you for this video...i have a question and i apologize if you have mentioned this before... I, too, have been suffering from pinholes (on all color clays ) and bloating ( on dark clay and some swirling combos of clay). I know that there are many variables ( and $$$) that go into firing!!! When you say that you are going to refire the pinhole pieces, are you reglazing or just putting them in another firing ( not reglazed) but on a hotter shelf? ... I greatly appreciate your videos... frustrated with PINHOLES!!!
Hi Carol! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, I've undertaken a few projects around the house that's gobbled up my time...There are times when I just put the piece back in the kiln (no glaze added) however this will increase the heat work of the glaze and I find it can sometimes darken or even loose some of it's original colour...(flower cups). There are times when I will add some more glaze, and try to fill in the holes with some glaze and then put it back in for another go...as in the case of the vase that I smash in this video this was its 3rd firing, i added more glaze on it's 2nd fire but didn't add more on this firing. Bloating on darker clay is about the temp, some dark clays will bloat at ^6 and higher. I had two marbled cups (black/white clay) refired, one bloated the other didn't 😵💫...There is never a concrete answer with this as I'm sure you can tell by my long winded response 🤪 Also, I don't always put on a hotter shelf, I may put it on a cooler one if I plan on doing a hold...(hope that makes sense)...Thank you so much for your support!!
I don't put glaze on the rim and I cross my fingers that the glaze on the inside doesn't run too far and fuse it to the shelf or cookie...I'm a gambling kinda gal...I was just at the pottery supply and you just reminded me that I forgot to pick up china clay and alumina hydrate to make wadding!
