    Steve Vai loved Prince, he did a tribute talking about Prince as well, its on youtube but Prince was a Vai fan as well. When Prince passed and they cleared his house, he had Tender Surrender on CD by Steve Vai in his CD collection. Make sense too, i don't worship zodiac signs, but they are both Gemini's haha. I just think they had similar energy as well, and YES Sir! most Prince fans know exactly who Vai is, Prince fans love great musicianship, so happy you brought him up, he's such a legend too. Hope some time in the future you can react to Prince "i'm yours" it's only audio, from his first album "For You" where he plays every instrument & sings everything. it's Prince at 17 doing a killer bass guitar vs electric guitar solo but he's battling himself on the album, it's a must hear for all guitarists! and imo his best guitar show off skills on record. Great reaction dude and your knowledge is so enriching

    Another shout out for 'Question of U' live also from 1990 - starts off with piano and moves on to showcase his crazy Model 'C' guitar (made by Auerswald guitars) as seen in the 'Alphabet St' video. If you've never seen this guitar, he used it 1988-1990

    Michael B. on drums (another favorite of mine, dude was a beast). Yeah 1990 and the Lovesexy era are by far my favorite for guitar tone. There is an absolute goldmine of audio recordings from live shows, aftershows, rehearsals, etc. from ‘88.
    For example I regularly listen to his iconic performance of Just My Imagination, and the rehearsal version of Feel U Up (from the same year).

    This version of the 'cloud' guitar Prince called the 'Blue Angel' which he used on and is most associated with the Lovesexy '88 tour. Seeing on video dulls the color quite a bit - in reality it was a really vivid almost electric blue. This particular guitar sound that you're a big fan of (and I love too) was THE sound of the Lovesexy tour - you gotta checkout Live in Dortmund '88, especially 'Sister', 'Let's go Crazy' and 'Purple Rain' itself - AWESOME sound!...

  • @mharrislove
    @mharrislove 2 года назад +5

    Yes, yes, yes..! So, glad you got around to doing this version. I think that it's fair to say at this point that the flanger effect is kinda' a Prince signature. I'm not sure about his detailed guitar gear history, but its prominent use first hit my radar on the album, "Controversy" back in 1981 (another fine work constructed at the Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, MN). From the early 80s through the 2009 - 2010 shows, that guitar effect is applied at key moments. That guitar tone you noted is everything and the Lovesexy/Peach & Black era guitar tone (kinda' sorta' late 80s - early 90s) is right up there with his best concert sound. Every version of Bambi I've heard is short (maybe the Undertaker version is longer?), but if you're in the mood for a longer listen, then consider going back to under-appreciated Montreux 2009 set for a guitar-driven, funk-infused version of "All the Critics Love U..." If you want to really, really stretch it out, then that probably means taking on the Purple Rain solo from the Syracuse, NY show in 1985.

    • @YesYouCANPlayGuitar
      @YesYouCANPlayGuitar  2 года назад +2

      Great post as always! Yes I have been starting to notice he uses flange to add extra emphasis on certain parts, he is brilliant in so many ways :) There's always more to see, hear and learn from him.

  • @RussianNightmare
    @RussianNightmare 2 года назад +4

    Hi my Friend. Dave Rusen made Prince's cloud guitars for the most part. Schecter was used to make the copies he sold on his tour and through his fan club. No where near the same quality. Also since he has passed, Paisley Park has sold re-issues of the cloud in different colors. I have one in white but its not accurate to the movie. Dave Rusen also made several copies of Princes famous Hohner (HS Anderson) Mad Cat guitar as the Hohner Mad Cat became hard to find. Also he made other tele variants. The cloud guitar in this video is like a teal / blue. As for having a Steve Vai feel, this song was part of his self titled album in 1979.

    Great reaction. I’ve heard of the Steve Vai connection (mutual respect). I think Prince drew from a lot of different influences but the final performance and/or sound almost always has an original feel to it. The actual sound and music from this song probably pre-date the Steve Vai connection. Prince recorded the studio version in 1979 and this performance tracks the original pretty closely, but I do hear an overall similarity. As you suggested, I think both artists are original enough in their own rights that neither was necessarily copying.

    Prince did do a classic Roc trio of him on guitar, Sonny T (Thompson) on bass, and Michael Bland on drums. Sonny T. was the man that Prince looked up to musically when they were in school. Check out the live version of the song Dreamer on Jay Leno back in 2009 that's the band. Keep these videos coming I'm enjoying myself and like discovering new artist that I may have passed over. 💯👍

    You missed the lead up to BAMBI which is really incredible. Starts with Michael Bland's (my favorite Prince drummer) kick drum and Prince playing guitar and he even goes into a solo BEFORE Bambi even starts. You really need to go back and watch that intro because it's an absolutely incredible way to build up to the song. THIS is the definitive version of BAMBI for me although Prince really f*$&ed up with this live arrangement as he left off the second and third verses which sucks because a FULL length performance of the song would've been bad ass! Prince's solo on this is killer and the outro guitar solo and ending is perfection! Watching this reaction video, the ending of the song still raises the hair on my neck. EVERY TIME I WATCH IT. The tone, the soloing, the effects, Michael's POWERFUL drumming all make this so incredible.

    The Schecter versions of the cloud guitars were reproductions that were sold to the public. The versions that Prince played were custom guitars built by Dave Rusan circa 1983, and were modeled after a bass design that was built by Jeff Levin, in the early 70’s. I believe that Andy Beech made a few for Prince later on, but definitely not Schecter.

    One of my favorite clips of his playing. This "Cloud" guitar was made by David Rusan, and they would be made by him until the late 90's. After that, Schecter would start to produce them for Prince and for consumers

    • @thesolitaryadventurer
      @thesolitaryadventurer 2 года назад +1

      David Rusan deserves a lot of credit for the guitars he created.
      Happy to be corrected but I believe the HS Anderson/Hohner Madcat that we all know was the major guitar throughout his career was also recreated by Dave Rusan so that Prince had a few of them. As he was always throwing them around, they'd get broken and damaged so to have a few of them meant he could be a little more cavalier!
      I've seen one at Paisley Park that is definitely the one he used at Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, but I've seen a few that have toured as part of the "Prince guitars collection exhibition" and they are the Hohner replicas made under the Hohner "The Prinz" name.
      I'm lucky enough to have a 1988 The Prinz before they lost the lawsuit and had to change the Fender Tele headstock design.
      I see those Hohner copies passed off as Prince's own but the truth is Dave Rusan had made duplicates of his original HS Anderson one.

      Hohner made a fender-style tele in the mid-70s under a Japanese manufacturer called HS Anderson "Madcat" - a varnished maple with leopard-print pickguard. (Prince bought one at a gas station in late-70s and it became his go to guitar for his whole career)
      Once Prince became famous, Hohner approached him to license the guitar with his name and he declined. So they released it as "The Prinz" instead. I think from around 1985 and the Purple Rain Superstardom era.
      However the headstock was a direct copy of Fender's. So Fender sued Hohner for that and Hohner had to change the headstock design - which changed the model to "Te Prinz" (no "h") post-1988 and the lawsuit loss.
      The most desirable models then are the accurate 1985 to 1988 "The Prinz" models.
      As I mentioned, it was believed Prince was actually using these Hohners but in fact Dave Rusan had recreated several copies of the original HS Anderson "Madcat" for Prince to use.
      Over the years he had several - one that sprayed fluid from the neck (during his very early risqué days he would simulate you know what with the guitar and spray the audience!) and, if you look at the guitar at the Superbowl or RnR Hall of Fame, you can see another with damage around the upper parts of the body where it had taken impacts from being thrown around.

  • @thesolitaryadventurer

    I think I mentioned that Steve Vai believes Prince covered him but there's confusion around it being Villanova Junction and Tender Surrender. Here's the clip that people reference - ruclips.net/video/T1cnrbrInPo/видео.html - because the bootleg calls it Tender Surrender. However, Prince had been playing Villanova Junction regularly in soundchecks, rehearsals, etc for a few years at least by then.
    There's a clip of Steve Vai mentioning the bootleg and it makes sense because they start so similarly.
    This version of Bambi is a very solid live one - shame about the early 90s video editing so you can't concentrate on the hands and fingers. His band at that time wasn't yet the start of the Michael Bland on drums / Sonny Thompson on bass / Barbarella on keys that from mid-91 to mid-95 was a killer band. One of this absolute best - perhaps the best in terms of being able to tackle anything thrown at them. You see a few leftovers from the Sign O The Times/Lovesexy era here like Levi Seacer Jr and Miko Weaver who are phenomenal musicians but are being held back by the positions they're having to play here.
    Great clip, enjoyed the reaction. Don't be afraid to really geek out on any of his guitar work here. I'd love to know about scales and figures and hammer ons and all that guitar jargon! :D

      Great post as always my man, I'm happy with how things are progressing but not to compare but as I see Rick Beato on his channel, I feel I have much to offer the musical community, I don't think I have found my stride yet on RUclips but I think we are on the right track, I think you gave me an idea to help take things to the next level.... :)

    • @thesolitaryadventurer
      @thesolitaryadventurer 2 года назад

      @@YesYouCANPlayGuitar I watch the odd Beato video but I don't hang with him as he seems to like fundamentally different things from his music to me.
      His musical theory knowledge is incredible and his ability to play by ear - but it doesn't bring me in to the videos. Taking what is happening from a theory point of view and then speaking that in a way that the layman can appreciate - now that'd be gold.
      And a differentiator. There are plenty of straight reaction videos on here. To have a direction that the analysis comes from is unique.

    I believe there was more than one provider of the cloud.prince several.a couple changed colour, one was snapped in half during a performance and was repaired and resprayed a new colour.originaly the cloud design was taken from a bass.the bass in question was modelled on an early guitar,can't remember the name,was something like a sitar but my memory gets bad sometimes.there is a video on tube showcasing his guitars.you should do a reaction on his guitars and bass that would be awesome.you could tell us what hardware he uses on them . I still don't know what pickups he uses on his madcatz honor Tele his favourite rippin guitar . Don't you think Metallica could have done a sweet version of Bambi too .Steve Vai is a beast on guitar .it would be interesting to know who Steve was most influenced by.i imagine similar great guitarist that prince liked and learned from watching them play. the story was that Steve Vai had just acquired a new bootleg Prince recording. He looked at the tracklist and saw Tender Surrender and thought it was a Prince song, just happened to have the same name as his. Then when he played it and it turned out to be a cover of Vai's song, Steve;s mind was blown that Prince covered him.

      @@gabriels1869 ruclips.net/video/T1cnrbrInPo/видео.html The bootleg is labeled Tender Surrender but it's the same Villanova Junction he'd been playing since the late-80s. From what I've heard on the clips where he addresses it, Steve heard the first few bars and figured it was his song - but the reality is the starts sound the same and I think he never listened long enough to hear them diverge.

      Another one, older: The great Tom Jones with the great Gilmour: Purple Rain: ruclips.net/video/Kd5SssWNTho/видео.html
      And great stuff from my corner, neighbourcorner: Helene Fischer, the biggest star in germany. One of the best singers in the world. Believe me, would she would have lived in the US for the last 10 years, she would have been probably the greatest star there. In music circles she is well known as a great great singer. She sells out the biggest stadiums here.
      Here with Queen, Brian May, Roger Taylor and Adam Lambert with her, Who wants to live forever: ruclips.net/video/DBNLXZ6UusI/видео.html
      With Tom Jones together: ruclips.net/video/-MZrgXR75Tk/видео.html
      And here with one of the most beautiful voices of all time, Andrea Bocelli with her: ruclips.net/video/QbB9EtWzc0w/видео.html
      And from my country, an unforgettable concert, perhaps the most legendary in our country history, the only man from here who was No. 1 in the US Charts. Falco, 1993 in front of 100.000 people!!!!! in Vienna. There was heavy weather and a lighning was crushed to the stage/near the stage and Falco was cool and after a break the played again. Like nothing. Unforgettable, Falco. ruclips.net/video/2umRYe1vYvI/видео.html
      I have seen thousands of musicians, belive me these videos now are worth to watch 😀😀😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 Hope you enjoy and pehaps there are a few ideas for the future. Otherwise enjoy and probalby you will see something you didn´t have seen until yet 😁😁😁

      As the years rolled on and the yes men arrived, it's refreshing for Peggy to speak now and say what she loved, hated, admired, and disrespected. It's true opinion. That interview is possibly my favourite of anyone in the Prince camp. She doesn't have an axe to grind and she witnessed the star to superstar journey.
