Hey I just want to tell you guys thank you for taking the time and going to do this. When I was a little kid my friend's dad used to take us up in the mountains. We used to hike 10 miles in to find those trout we used to have to carry his beer in our backpacks. We thought it was messed up because it was so heavy at the beginning and then we just got used to it LOL. You guys are the bomb. Let me tell you you bringing my childhood back. Thank you
Thanks for showcasing how beautiful California is. Yes we have our problems but I’m still proud to call this place home. Great adventure I really enjoyed watching.
Great adventure. Such respect for the fish and the environment. Joy in fly fishing whether a small or large fish. Just wish you would share more about the flies you are using at the time. Safe travels
I've never been to the Sierra Nevada Range. To go up in the high Sierra was a definite bucket list item, but afraid time and resources have run out. That is fine. I've been blessed to fish other beautiful places with the best of friends. To remember the first species of trout caught, where I netted it and what it ate will remain with me. Now I'll experience The Sierra through your eyes, fishing and digital cameras which ain't too bad. Take care.
Red deer Alberta Canada here. Fished all my life, Love trout on the fly. Just came back from a good couples trout adventure down southern Alberta❤ JUST found your channel aa we got back home. Dang GREAT VIDEOS!!!! Come this way anytime! Free meals and accomidation and trooooot for days 😂❤🎉 Just amazing film work, fabulous, fish, wonderful narration, great editing etc! Such a pleasure watching your videos.I've been binging since we got back.
*Thank you so much for bringing me along. It was fascinating and beautiful trouts it is educational for me but most of all the nature was wonderful that I can almost smell the grass. Once again thank you you all.*
I grew up hiking this area and camping the forks and little kern for the last 35 years, it's nice to see the river so high and personally i think the LK is a much nicer trip then the BK or Kern Lake, though they all are beautiful. Thanks for sharing this video.
Fantastic video, gents! Glad you saw bears and rattlesnakes! At least they were black bears and not grizzlies! Pretty fish you caught! When you have kids, if you don’t already, you MUST show them this video! Congrats!
Just an amazing adventure and representation of some of these rare and beautiful jewels that California has to offer! Glad you and your brother had the chance to live out such a trip that will forever be remembered. I was fortunate to accomplish this and check off a native California Golden trout a few years back it was surreal to see the bright colors first hand! Hope to see more from your channel. ✨
Trifecta! Fun stuff! Looks like you really got into California gold! Thanks for sharing. I live and fish California gold too. My fishing buddy named his vehicle Golden Trout One. It’s so much fun to be in high elevations and catch… and you can’t beat the scenery. Congratulations on filling your bucket list dream and hard work adventure.
This is an amazing video! Earned my subscription for sure. Would love to see a video of the gear you use for backcountry fly fishing trips like this one! Keep up the good work!
Wow, that's a fishing safari, gentleman. I'm new to the sport and I would just love to have any trout on my line. I'm totally living vicariously through you since I'm an old man and wouldn't be able to get to the streams you hit. Thank you so much for your vids, and advice. Much of what you captured with your vids are just epic fishing.
Having spent many summers up in that “High Country” from mapping those trails, keying out flora and fauna, to handing out pamphlets, it is nice to see the public discovering why it’s worth the trek. Please tread gently…
@@GIGASUSSYCHADWhat? Are you talking about the trout? Noah here was talking about the part of the video where they thought they found gold in a stream
Wow that was some impressive angling! You guys make those tight spot shots look easy!?? I also love that the equipment you use really captures the true colors of those fish and the scenery! Well done!👍
Great video nice to see u in our neck of the woods. I've made that backpacking trip from Kennedy meadows to the Kern and it was well worth all 20 mil....the trout were amazing. We also encountered bears too in that valley. It's a trip u never forget!!!
That's awesome!! I know I definitely won't forget the trip. It's tough and while I was doing it at times I was a tad bit miserable... but I promise when I look back on the trip it's nothing but fond memories! Thanks for watching
What a fantastic place, that scenery is gorgeous and so are the fish. Didn't know that the trails were all marked, I thought that you just went where ever you wanted. Bet that the ones you kept tasted as good as they looked cooked over your campfire. Really lovely video.
These videos are awesome, and they have taught me a lot about fly fishing! This looks like a lot of fun! I and some friends are planning to go on some backpacking trips and are planning to catch some golden trout as well. There is some awesome trout fishing here in Wyoming. If you have a chance to fish here, you totally should. You would have an awesome time!
Lmfao dude you have like the same story I do. All my life growing up here in Connecticut I fished for the legendary “golden trout” finally got one, a beautiful 21 inch, what I now know to be a palomino rainbow. After catching it I dug into some research, and imagine my face when I learned that for 20 years, what I thought was a golden trout was really just a mutant from a hatchery in 1955 lol. Now I’d love to do what you’ve done and go out to cali and catch a real golden trout. For now, I’m happy with my golden/palomino rainbow and tiger trout rarities out east here 😉
Awesome video, when you posted the video about the Lahontan Cutthroat, adjacent to the original videos for this, you suggested you also had video about the Paiute Cutthroat, I'd love to see that video too
Did you guys eat any of the fish in the backcountry? Loved this whole adventure and to spend it with your bro is priceless. How was the hike back to where you started?
We did not, although we could have. And the hike back was the most difficult hike I’ve ever done. Ended up being a little over 22 miles. That distance + being exhausted already + blisters + heat nearly got us both 😂 thanks for watching!
Great video in lovely landscape, beautiful fish. Thanks for sharing this adventure ! Can you please tell me how long your rod used when fishing those 'micro' streams between bushes and branches ? And I'm also interested which tippet size you use (0.14, 0.16,0.18 ???) Tight lines and regards, Markus from germany
it is so tough to get into that area. I do it from the eastern side on week long trips. it's a little easier to access. my favorite ways to access the Kern are kearsarge pass, up bubbs Creek, over Forester pass, over to lake south america, down the upper Kern basin to the tyndell cutoff back over to the jmt, over Forester pass, bubbs Creek and out kearsarge pass. another is trail pass to golden trout creek, down to little Whitney meadow, down to the Kern, back up to volcano creek, over to golden trout creek and out trail pass. I've accessed it from the west side via the high sierra trail as well. much harder to hike in and out though.
the best and easiest way that doesnt require overnight camping. spend a night at a motel in lone pine or at cottonwood lakes campground. from lone pine (should leave 6am) take whitney portal road and take right on hoseshoe meadow road all the way to get to the campground. take cottonwood lakes trail and hike about a mile or two you will cross the cottonwood creek that is full of beautiful golden trout use nothing but size 18 parachute adams or same kind dries. then go 2 more miles you will get to the cottonwood lakes same exact golden trout but the lake golden are bigger. just a day fishing trip is all you need so don't need carry bear proof canisters
On one of the videos I saw you putting some fancy socks and overlapping those on top of your boots. Please tell us about that "know how" of yours! Thank you! P.S. Awesome places and quality time there! Thanks for sharing!
I believe you are talking about wading socks. Most wading boots are about one size larger than your street shoes to account for the neoprene "stocking foot". When you wet wad without waders, you need something to take up that space. I use a liner or wool hiking sock directly on my feet, then neoprene wading socks, and then finally put by wading boots on. The neoprene wading socks can be left up for skin protection if you are wearing shorts, or folded over to protect your boot laces. I hope that answers your question.
I would love to try and replicate this trip with my boys who have become obsessed with fishing. Is there a trailhead you guys took to start your adventure?
So fun. Most people have no idea how big America actually is. I've hiked and cruised timber out west. It's not uncommon to not see people for days and that is a good thing. BTW are you sure your related because you look nothing alike...lol
Oh yeah for sure. I think we saw one other human being in 4 days, with almost 75 miles hiked in total (if I remember correctly). America is pretty impressive! And yep, born 2.5 years apart LOL
For the most part yes, from what I know it’s easier for the fish to get bigger the bigger the water. If the fish gets so big in that small stream it would get picked off really easily.
The fish up there are in the High Sierra. Winter is long and harsh. They are the right size to survive. You don't fish for them to catch big fish. You do it for their wild beauty.
I've fished that area for 4 plus decades, they *do* get a lot bigger, even in the tiny creeks, BUT, it's quite uncommon because the conditions are harsh. Also, Goldens don't get particularly large to begin with. Anything over about 15" is a trophy size for most people.
Juvenile rainbows get the yellow indication on their belly that just means they’re really pure golden trout less of dots are on back and there would be punch together
really curious if brook, golden and rainbow share a long lost descendent. I catch a lot of brookies in upstate ny that look like this, or maybe the stocked goldens have bread with our rainbows?
How did you get to the lake area. I have been fishing there before and had great success but it was on a pack train so I don’t know the trail to get there.
