Thanks for sharing! That's my Uncle Edmond Hall playing clarinet and my Grandfather played with Fats Domino on the first Rock n Roll record to sell over a million copies. For many musicians in the early 20th century, being a musician was one of the ways out of the cotton and sugar cane fields. St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago jazz/blues also developed as musicians like my Great Grandfather moved up the Mississippi on river boats to work. My Uncle moved to Ghana to open a music school for kids and then eventually retired in Boston and was inducted into the New England Jazz Hall of Fame. Bing Crosby was definitely a crooner. And an often untold story is how people such as him, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye and others helped paved the way for many black artists, refusing to play or tour in cities and casino's that supported segregation. They would sometimes have to sleep in different quarters. These artists would often promote on their own shows artists of color and move away from showing white musicians in film, but having black musicians play the parts.. The Civil Rights movement in general became supported by people of many nationalities and faiths. Good music is good music regardless of color! You'll find many of my Uncle Edmond Hall's instrumentals on RUclips with some amazing renditions like Dardenella. Dave Bartholomew, who was a writer and producer, also worte such classics as "My ding-a-ling," later covered by Chuck Berry. High Society was a movie in the 1950s which highlighted Newport Rhode Island and what woud become the Newport Jazz festival and the tastes of the "Well-to-do."

Top of the Charts even in July. Contemplate for a moment listening to this song wishing your husband son or daughter was home and then getting a cable from the War Department or a Visit from your the local minister and a man in uniform.

Bing and Louis were really good friends since 1926 (imagine that especially during such a time!) and remained great friends until Louis's death in 1971. Bing literally got top billing for a black person in a movie in history, and that was for Louis Armstrong in 1936. That opened so many doors for other black performers! Louis and Bing genuinely adored each other and each other's art.

Oh how my mother LOVED Louie Armstrong! And she taught her children to appreciate him too. White as white as we are, my mother’s respect, delight and honor for him helped me to recognize that “color” had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the value of a human being! During the painful and long death of my mother from lung cancer, she relied on his song “It’s a Beautiful World” to grant her strength, joy, love and trust to constantly remind her of the value of her life in ours. Even now, years and years after her death, even the memory of that song brings me to tears. Tears of sorrow. Tears of joyful memories. Tears of the closeness of love which even death cannot erase.

I believe the Bing/Bowie rendition is called "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy". It's become a holiday classic ever since Bing's Christmas Special on TV in 1977. Sadly, by the time this aired on November 30th, 1977, Bing had already passed away unexpectedly in October. The filming, which took place in London, England, was completed in September. A month later, Crosby, an avid golfer, completed 18 holes with World Cup champion Manuel Piñero. As they headed back to the Clubhouse, Bing said, "That was a great game of golf, fellas. Let’s go have a Coca-Cola." Those were his last words. He died instantly, on the golf course, of a heart attack. I like to think he was exactly where he wanted to be when it was his time to go.⛳

Now that ladies and gentleman is what a real crooner sounds like.
Bing Crosby was the original crooner and in his early days Frank Sinatra sounded just like him.
Louis Armstrong was called Satchmo because of the way he played his trumpet, it is short for Satchel Mouth.

  • @Robbyrool

Many people nowadays don’t realize how Bing revolutionized popular singing. Prior to him it was common to sing opera style. Bing popularized singing in natural voice. Which everyone in popular music did ever since. He was very respected by jazz musicians as a true jazz singer, unlike many others from the era. He’s one of the all time OGs and GOATS.
Louis is also one of the all time OGs and GOATS. He’s widely considered by musicians to be the greatest musician ever. He was known for musical magic, making you think you heard notes he hadn’t actually played, but only alluded to. He developed and popularized a style of simplicity, playing the least number of notes needed to convey the melody. Your brain fills in the rest. The opposite of bebop which came later. “Satchmo” means satchel mouth, referring to the baggy stretched out cheeks of a trumpet player. He’s so known for his singing now that people don’t realize what a great musician his was.

Louis Armstrong and the alluring Lena Horne star in the all-black musical film "Cabin In The Sky" 1943. It was unusual back then for a studio to produce a movie exclusively starring black actors, but in spite of some racist southern theaters, it was very popular in the U.S., being somewhat ahead of its time. Although it does contain some eye-rolling stereotypes, it's very entertaining!

Bing is the first crooner. Crooners became A Thing when microphones and wireless radios were invented - before that people had to sing loud enough to compete with a band. With the advent of microphones and recorded music, people were able to sing quietly and with subtle style and be heard for the first time. I highly recommend the miniseries Soundbreaking about the history of recorded music from crooners to hip hop and beyond. Like hip hop is amazing because they managed to make music with zero access to instruments. Very interesting series with great artists

I had newer music to cherish...from 60s thru nineties. Oldest son especially liked Bings' Christmas music..his brothers got him an animatronic Bing to put under the tree, dressed in Santa suit. Over the years parts stopped working, but music still good.
Now his daughter is convinced lil Bing is an elf and can't wait for him to show up. Fun to see how the music he made is still happening over and over, for 70+ years! So good to see Bing, Satchmo, Jimmy Durante, and others keep going through the generations.

You mentioned Diversity - Bing was known to try to get Louis and other blacks into his movies - he didn't see color - he just saw sweet notes of music all colors of the rainbow ...
Crosby admired Louis Armstrong for his musical ability, and the trumpet maestro was a formative influence on Crosby's singing style. When the two met, they became friends. In 1936, Crosby exercised an option in his Paramount contract to regularly star in an out-of-house film. Signing an agreement with Columbia for a single motion picture, Crosby wanted Armstrong to appear in a screen adaptation of that eventually became . Crosby asked Harry Cohn, but Cohn had no desire to pay for the flight or to meet Armstrong's "crude, mob-linked but devoted manager, Joe Glaser". Crosby threatened to leave the film and refused to discuss the matter. Cohn gave in; Armstrong's musical scenes and comic dialogue extended his influence to the silver screen, creating more opportunities for him and other African Americans to appear in future films. Crosby also ensured behind the scenes that Armstrong received equal billing with his white co-stars. Armstrong appreciated Crosby's progressive attitudes on race, and often expressed gratitude for the role in later years.

Glenn even joined the military to play more for the soldiers, and tragically died when his plane disappeared over the English Channel in 1944. He had 16 number-1 records and 69 top-10 hits during his career, more than Elvis or the Beatles!

Oh my gosh, totally love you guys! As an Irish American, whose grandparents, on both sides, had to emigrate to the US, I adore than you are featuring Bing Crosby! He's an Irish American icon and has the best baritone and melodic voice. Favorite of his song is "I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas." Keep doing you!!

Some other GREAT duets…Louis and Ella Fitzgerald singing “Baby it’s cold outside” and the main title from Hello Dolly. And if you like Ella, try Nina Simone and Dinah Washington (“Teach Me Tonight”)

I love their duet "Summertime". It's much slower than the ones you recommend, but it has a lot of trumpet.

Nina Simone's version of "I Put a Spell on You" & "Sinnerman" are sublime. And her song "Mississippi, G*d Damn" is the ultimate Civil Rights song.

A good jazz and scat-singing song for you plus it could be Female Friday -- 'It Don't Mean a Thing' by Ella Fitzgerald with Duke Ellington on piano, live version.

You guys!! Bing Crosby is the most famous crooner ever! Check out Bing singing I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas. I believe he premiered that tune in the movie White Christmas with the amazingly funny Danny Kaye, the female crooner Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney's aunt), and the unbelievably talented tap dancer Vera Ellen. It's a classic! Bing Crosby is in movies with Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and so many other wonderful talents from that time.

Oh I adore you Kids. My son grew up being exposed to any music I played, and I owned a dancing school so I played music from all genres and all decades. My grandchildren on the other hand were neither exposed to nor interested in hearing my music. You are somewhere in the middle. You didn't grow up with it but you are loving it. Watching you is like watching children open Christmas presents. And speaking of Christmas, Kids, I can pretty much guarantee you you've been listening to Bing Crosby since the first Christmas after your birth. This is the man who sings White Christmas. ❤️

Another great crooner is Mel Torme--his voice was so smooth he was called 'The Velvet Fog'. And no adventure into the crooners would be complete without Dean Martin. He is my personal favourite crooner.

Finally someone reacts to Bing Crosby - the artist who had sold more records - singles and albums combined - estimated to be close to a Billion units by some people. Read his entry in Wikipedia:
Crosby influenced the development of the postwar recording industry. After seeing a demonstration of a German broadcast quality reel-to-reel tape recorder brought to America by John T. Mullin, he invested $50,000 in a California electronics company called Ampex to build copies. He then persuaded ABC to allow him to tape his shows. He became the first performer to prerecord his radio shows and master his commercial recordings onto magnetic tape.
Through the medium of recording, he constructed his radio programs with the same directorial tools and craftsmanship (editing, retaking, rehearsal, time shifting) used in motion picture production, a practice that became an industry standard.[12] In addition to his work with early audio tape recording, he helped to finance the development of videotape, bought television stations, bred racehorses, and co-owned the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, during which time the team won two World Series (1960 and 1971).
Crosby admired Louis Armstrong for his musical ability, and the trumpet maestro was a formative influence on Crosby's singing style. When the two met, they became friends. In 1936, Crosby exercised an option in his Paramount contract to regularly star in an out-of-house film. Signing an agreement with Columbia for a single motion picture, Crosby wanted Armstrong to appear in a screen adaptation of The Peacock Feather that eventually became Pennies from Heaven.
