I saw him in a Holiday Inn on the corner of Cline Ave and US 30. The room was the size of a medium bedroom. I had to see him after his singing on Johnny Carson. RIP My wife and I sat down at a table and of all things a friend walked in the door. He said you came to see this guy? I would have said hell yeah, but took the road less traveled called real friendship. He had come to see another guy and he just didn't like Tom. I know he isn't for everyone, but I am good at recognizing Genius. But I am surprised people all over the world knew him. Big polite crowds too.

After this concert he proceeded to La Rivolta Pub in La Pigna (Old Town) San Remo, consumed a bottle of JD, his head hit the bar with a thud, he barfed and was then carried down to street level ( no roads in La Pigna) to the taxi which brought him back to his hotel. A perfect gentleman during the whole ordeal!

Tom in tutta la sua straordinaria carriera non ha fatto più di cinque tappe qui in Italia. La sua musica qui non può essere capita, compresa, vissuta. Ma forse va bene così. Diamo i "commerciali" agli altri, diamo gli "Amici di Maria" e gli "X Factor" vari al grande pubblico, e noi teniamoci l'arte, la sua musica. Da 23 anni che sono su questa terra non faccio altro che ascoltare lui. E ogni volta, sempre, la stessa emozione....

Tom Waits non mi convince cambia troppo il timbro di voce. Basta sentirlo quando canta jazz in falsetto o nella sua unica vera bella canzone (hope I don't fall in love with you) voci diversissime. Anche in Early years.
Personalmente preferisco Springsteen
ma non è autentico, quando canta drunker "è forzato. Guarda bene le vene del collo..

Io c'ero, unica volta sono andato a Sanremo per un festival e quello del Tenco era sempre esaurito chiunque ci fosse. Un'amica mi procuro' il biglietto e indicata l'uscita degli artisti. Tom usci' con Benigni che non cagai e mi feci fare il tremulo autografo da Waits che ancora conservo gelosamente.
