It's so strange to me. Brenner has done all these terrible things. He's trying to help but he does it in the most questionable ways possible. And yet, I still felt sad when he died. He was one of the first relationships El had. A very strange, strained relationship. But as he was dying, El started to weep. I think she did care for him. But, I like the message the show decided to go with. If someone hurts you, you can forgive them enough to work with them. But you never are obligated to forget. And it's always your choice and within your right to walk away. So while I was sad, I was also relieved that El was finally free. And that Papa finally gets to rest.
Its also important to remember the power of manipulating a child. Sometimes its familial - religion, culture, some social characteristics. But sometimes it is evil, and selfish. Modine acted the hell out of a deeply twisted man who had viciously abused the lives of children who knew no other life. It was modern slavery with a twist (a superpowered twist).
He was not all bad , like any parent he controls the environment , he never once hit eleven or mistrusted her even with her powers . He was literally her father. He himself is a product of his profession a scientist entrusted to develop and understand these powers . To me I think he was more good than bad ……
His death scene was one of my favorite scenes of the season, maybe of the entire show. I love how they took him out in such an epic manner, and his last dying action was saving El. It doesn't excuse everything he did before that point, but it was definitely cool to see. And then I love how El tells Henry/Vecna/One that Papa was the monster, and Vecna was like umm no I'm pretty sure it's me LOL
Yea same I literally cheered when he died only cuz of how he treated el in the past I kinda felt bad for him when el seemed sad but that really it other then that I was happy lol
Def got emotional when he says he really loves Millie and you can see his eyes water and she goes to hold his hand😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 they really built a parental relationship as actors because he watched her grow up through the seasons. And you can see in reality he is a sweet soft spoken man with a humbleness. Omg my heart 🥺🥺🥺 😫😭
I felt really proud of El in that moment. Like many abusive people, they're not just black and white. Brenner clearly manipulated El and hurt her, but also loved her in a sort of way. But why I feel El should be proud of herself is that she didn't forget. When Papa tries to make Eleven "forgive"* him, if she does, she will always blame herself, and try to justify his actions. When she doesn't respond, she takes the power she deserves, and silently shows she will not forgive him for being so awful to her. That she is sorry for him (tears) and deeply conflicted about him. But that she will not accept being abused as a thing for her own good. *Forgiveness in this case: I mean that Brenner wants Eleven to accept that he was right and reassure him that he can die without feeling the guilt or that he can tell himself "I did the right thing". However, forgiveness DOESN'T mean that ALWAYS. This is how I defined forgiveness for this comment. I'm sorry, I should have specified. Thank you for those who helped me out in correcting that! :)
There are things you think but never say. There are actions you contemplate but rreject. You do this because across that line, their is a cliff. You can't comeback. A reasonable human being chooses working through issues instead of tossing a match and watching them burn. I know I think things in the heat of an argument that I don't say because I want to bring them to my way of thinking, not alienate them. I have a sibling that flies over the line often. I have watched him destroy dozens of relationships. He's a hot mess that lives in drama. I don't get it. Some people don't have an older sibling, so ready with mistakes to learn from. They have to learn from their own mistakes. I noticed Brennan lived alone. He may have lived that way because his entire life was at the lab. But he also might have been that way because he had blown up every other relationship he ever had. Maybe the latter was the reason for the former. Brennan was a case study for ways not to behave.

The fact that Modine and Millie have such a pure friendship as opposed to the much more sinister relationship between Papa and El. It’s one of the things that makes this show so great!
their relationship is to die for, and the fact that the cast is so incredibly close, and they have like 8 years if not more of knowing each other just makes the show all so much better
How amazing and charismatic Matthew Modine is, he was only in season 1 and season 4 but was able to make us hate Dr. Brenner in the first and cry when he died. Such an amazing performance

If the scenario have been different El would feel the same connection with Papa that Millie is trying to describe. But with all the torture idk if El ever thought like that. But she did have connection with him for sure. Idk what exactly was Brenner's purpose behind doing all this but he sure thought he was doing it for good. His mind was twisted just like Henry. He spent all his life doing this and never had a family of his own. Maybe he meant it when he said they were his family. He cared for them, protected them in his own way. Almost like pets. He liked being in control. He needed power. He treated people wrong but never acknowledged it. He wasn't exactly cruel. He was a manipulator. He was a grey character. He never deserved forgiveness. And I'm happy that El didn't give into his manipulation even when he was dying.
Brenner truly cared about Eleven like his own child but because she was his life's work he couldn't give up trying to control her and continue to push her limits. I like that Matthew Modine did not try to justify Dr. Brenner's actions and called the character cruel, unlike other actors who play villains and always try to make excuses for their characters. They really casted well for both the adults and the kids.
Millie Bobby Brown is an incredible artist. Both with this and Enola Holmes, you can just tell how seriously she takes her work as well as the sheer amount of effort and dedication she puts into making her characters come to life, specifically as icons of womanhood and feminine power. And strange as it may sound, even as a 16-year old boy, that to me feels really inspiring
I'm 46yo and i have become a fan of hers. The way she has grown as an actor during this show got me fascinated i had to watch Enola 1 and 2 only because I wanted more of her acting. I also love her characters.
I have such a love hate relationship with Dr. Brenner. You could tell he has a good heart, but just did messed up stuff in the name of science. I was disappointed he died. I kinda wanted Eleven to forgive him at the end 😥
Good heart where? He's a mad scientist who kidnapped 18 kids and abused all of them for years. When they didn't do what he wanted, he'd electrocute them or lock them in a dark room for hours. When El's mother wanted the child he stole from her and passed as dead, he fried her brain, leaving her disabled for the rest of her life. He deserved a worse death!
I dont really agree with Millie on Papa being her first dad and him being all she knew. He robbed her of her childhood and took her mom away from her. She never asked for that kind of life at all. While, Hooper gave her shelter, love and comfort and tried to really protect her. Be a real parent to her. As oppossed to Brenner who just used the kids for science and his experiments. I mean Eleven was sheltered from the rest of the world and didnt even know what "friends" meant or what a tv was etc.
I agree to some extend with you, but real dads rob kids and take away their mothers all the time, doesn't mean their title as dad is void. I think we can argue semantics all day but I think that's what makes this show great, that while I value your opinion and it's all true, we can all be right in some way.
Just because he wasn't a good father doesn't mean he wasn't her first father figure ..I.e. "dad" . His methods were awful but he the main man responsible for her for 2/3 of her life.
@@The1Music2MyEars if your dad is truly horrible, won't change, isnt present, or hurts you & never shows remorse, then you can void their "dad" title if you want to. Dad, like Mom, is a special title that is earned. Men like that aren't dads, they're sperm donors.
It must have been an incredible journey for them both, and for Matthew to see Millie growing by the years both physically and in her acting skills. Phenomenal acting, such a lovely duo ❤
I am re-watching (again) from the beginning, and in season 1, when they all get to Joyce's, and you can see an instant connection between El and Hopper, when he's asking her questions. How she looks at him, like she feels he is the father she always needed.
*I recently completed watching Stranger Things all episode and this interview changes my whole perspective about PAPA....we really want papa back* 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
This goes to show me that cast members really do spend a lot of time together and become kinda like a family. You can just see it with the relationships they all have.
I was always quite certain that Brenner would survive his encounter with the Demagorgon in season 1 for the simple reason that it felt like he and El had unfinished business. She never really had the opportunity to assert her independence with him until now. Brenner's final sin was that, unlike Hopper or Mike or Dr. Owens, he could not respect her making her own choices. When she tried to leave, he tried to keep her there by force. He probably did think of himself as her "papa" and believed he was just looking out for her, but he was ultimately abusive and controlling. just as he was with Henry and the others, and that's why she could not forgive him in the end. I thought they wrapped up that story line really well.
I always wondered how he survived the demogorgan though. From what I remember, it jumped on him and then it cut to another scene. I swear they never explained how
Who’s her stylist? They made her look like she’s 33. When you’re 18 embrace it dont fight it and don’t hurry up. you’ll get old, trust me…don’t rush it.
I'm afraid this is her own personal style. Everything is wrong with her look, firstly the make up, then the hair, and the outfit of course. She's an over 35 in a 18's girl body. So sad.
People don't speak much about this crucial part and the end of "Papa", it was brilliant acting there and so unpredictable at the same time but they'd also nailed there really good, and so reallistically truth in their characters reactions I can say (not easy to find words for it...)
Having had an abusive father who did love me in a toxic way, I have never related so much with a character as I did El when she said goodbye to her "Papa"
I truly believe all of Brenner's motivations were selfish and there was no reason for him to start experimenting on kids anyway. One of those in the name of science type villains. I think her not forgiving him was significant because there was a time where she did see him as a guardian and most likely didn't even know there was something to forgive. From a willing prisoner (idk if that makes sense), to guilty runaway, to her own hero
So cute watching these too. You can tell they have a real bond, and they are both such intelligent, down to earth actors. Everyone from that show seems genuinely nice and cool. Millie especially has so much talent as an actress from such a young age. Wishing you all the best xx 😘
I know it sounds stupid to disagree with the actual actors But Brenner never asked for forgiveness, he tried to justify his actions. He wanted Eleven to say what he did was right, instead of realizing what he did was wrong and ask for her to show mercy
I agree w this. Tbh millie's stances are like romaticizing the manipulative relationship of el with brenner. I wrote my explanation on the other video (the full video of netflix of all casts interviews) and others replied to me like millie only said that to be sensitive with modine's feelings and I don't agree with that. Maybe at the end they were just joking around how el likes in the lab more but in her answers she sounds like it's her real stance and opinion.
@@wendydarling4287 she was obviously joking at the end lol. I think she was also narrating in El's point of view, who probably did think of Papa like that at some point, not objectively speaking about the events. But i do see how people can find Millie's narration confusing, it's up to everyone's interpretation after all.
El and Dr Brenner’s relationship is so complex. On one hand he very obviously hurt her and manipulated her for so long that I think it was time that she was freed of it and god for how long I’d hated him and wished he died was yet when he died I genuinely felt really sad. I think that’s the beauty of that scene and it shows the talent of the Duffer brothers being able to reflect El and Brenner’s whole relationship in that one death scene the toxicity and the scars that it left El but also the inexplicable almost instinctive but undeniable and strong love they share. I thought it was beautiful
@@tillywilson6038 I mean like most of the other men other than David harbour and also the other people that I'm talking about is like men that she's not comfortable with I mean when she's with men she's not comfortable with she gets nervous and fiddles with her fingers but as you can see she's not and she actually feels safe because she's comfortable with him unlike the people like her ex before they broke up and some other men that's not even in the cast that's what I meant by "all the other people". For your response
in retrospect Brenner brought in the cat to see if 11 and 1 were on the same path. Henry had no empathy whilst El had a lot of it. in that moment, I think Brenner started seeing El as more than just a patient/experiment.
Millie, Caleb and Sadie did their best work in season 4. These three grew up considerably as actors since season 3. I would say the same for Gaten. Unfortunately, Noah, and especially Finn, haven't really improved since season 2.
Dr. Brenner was the most interesting character to me. Modine really humanized him and made him feel as ambiguous as a truly dangerous abuser is. You never know what mixture of love, detachment, or cruelty you'll get from him, and he keeps a maddening equilibrium throughout all of it.
The Wheelers Synopsis Mike and El have married and now face the important task of raising children and it will be especially challenging when the kids have inherited their Mother's powers.
It's so strange to me. Brenner has done all these terrible things. He's trying to help but he does it in the most questionable ways possible. And yet, I still felt sad when he died. I like that Matthew Modine did not try to justify Dr. Brenner's actions and called the character cruel, unlike other actors who play villains and always try to make excuses for their characters. They really casted well for both the adults and the kids.
I really cried when Papa died. They gave a strong message in that scene. I felt it!!!!
SHE 👏 NEEDS 👏 A👏 EMMY👏
Beautifully written words! You are a very mature 16 year old boy. Keep up the great work!
Your parents did a beautiful job raising such a kind and smart young man.
If your peers are half as thoughtful as you appear to be, the future is looking up.
I'm 46yo and i have become a fan of hers. The way she has grown as an actor during this show got me fascinated i had to watch Enola 1 and 2 only because I wanted more of her acting. I also love her characters.
Aw, this is so pure! Love that genuine chemistry and mutual respect. Love it, guys. This season was great fun. Looking forward to season 5!

I have such a love hate relationship with Dr. Brenner. You could tell he has a good heart, but just did messed up stuff in the name of science. I was disappointed he died. I kinda wanted Eleven to forgive him at the end 😥
Same :(
Also, she could’ve at least put him outta his misery and killed him instead of letting him lay there lol
@@FKA91 You read the part where I said he did 'messed up stuff in the name of science' right?

My thoughts were, they could take him to the hospital they had plenty of room in that pizza van, but they simply left him to die, pretty disappointed
Love the ambivalence of his character. He's caring yet evil. He's the main villain.
Love the friendship between these two. Both are precious 💓😭
DRAWING STRANGER THINGS CHARACTERS... IT'S HERE ON THE CHANNEL !!!!!
It’s so amazing to see how invested they are in their characters. How they care about their characters and how they feel about what they do etc.
Their relationship is the cutest thing ever. You can see her admiration and love in her eyes.
EXACTLY! I found this interview so strange
Just because he wasn't a good father doesn't mean he wasn't her first father figure ..I.e. "dad" . His methods were awful but he the main man responsible for her for 2/3 of her life.
Stockholm syndrome is a thing.
I love how they switch back and forth between third and first person when talking about their characters
i’m crying when he said i really live millie bobby brown
I am re-watching (again) from the beginning, and in season 1, when they all get to Joyce's, and you can see an instant connection between El and Hopper, when he's asking her questions. How she looks at him, like she feels he is the father she always needed.

I just love Mathew Modine's hair !
I love how intelligent and insightful this interview was. Also I loooove Millie’s funky dress
Dr. Brenner is truly my favourite character, is a masterpiece to built a complicated and conflicted character like that
Having had an abusive father who did love me in a toxic way, I have never related so much with a character as I did El when she said goodbye to her "Papa"
Love how Matthew is so protective of his character and went on about how bad he hates Hopper
I know it sounds stupid to disagree with the actual actors
But Brenner never asked for forgiveness, he tried to justify his actions. He wanted Eleven to say what he did was right, instead of realizing what he did was wrong and ask for her to show mercy
DRAWING STRANGER THINGS CHARACTERS... IT'S HERE ON THE CHANNEL !!!!!
@@wendydarling4287 hard agree
Exactly!! 💯
I like that even outside set they have a paternal daughter relationship
It's weird I didnt really cry during any of the episodes or any of the characters death but as soon as papa died I was BALLING 😭

I love how sweet Matthew is, millie and Matt have such a cute friendship
in retrospect Brenner brought in the cat to see if 11 and 1 were on the same path. Henry had no empathy whilst El had a lot of it. in that moment, I think Brenner started seeing El as more than just a patient/experiment.
I felt this interview , felt the sadness from the scene of papa dying all over again .
Millie improved her acting quite a bit in the last couple years. Some of the kids didn't but she seems to have worked her ass off. Respect!
