I wish Coach would go back to making bags the way they used to, with incredible leather. Even their 1941 bags aren’t the same quality as their vintage leather bags are. If they would use that wonderful leather and put out some new styles, I’m sure their sales would increase. I can’t be the only one who feels this way.
    Their website drives me insane.
Great info. Thank you for sharing!

I've been buying Coach bags since the age of 16. Coach started out and has remained a leather goods retailer. It never sold itself as a luxury bag company. My advice to the CEO is to not lose their focus. There is no reason to compete with Chanel or the French status bags. Stay with what they already are: A stellar Leather Goods Company making stellar leather goods (suitcases, backpacks, handbags, small leather goods) without the pretense and ridiculously high prices. You walk in the store, you pay a fair price for a fine, durable leather bag.

I'm so glad you mentioned the fake Coach sales! They've left such a sour taste in my mouth. The Coach Pillow Tabby came to the outlet and was priced at $220. I knew a sale was coming up so I held off on buying, and then when I went back to purchase sure it was 25% off, but they had bumped the price up to $330 first!! I haven't bought anything from Coach since I experienced this.

Same here. I was waiting to buy it even though $220 was a great price. They increased Tabby prices to $550 and decreased the discount.

Coach has made for outlet bags that are lesser quality than boutique bag but Danielle Mumar is talking about a boutique bag that went to the outlet (not lesser quality). This happens with Coach, too.

I only buy vintage Coach bags anymore. I just don’t find most Coach bags worth the cost.& I saved up to by Coach in the 90s. And Coach supported their customers back then. Made us feel special. If you bought one of the legacy bags, they were guaranteed for life. I sent my much loved 1995 Pocket Bag back to have new leather binding - FOR FREE. Now you get a cost estimate for repairs or a discount on future purchases or lower quality bags. So thank goodness for the second hand market. That’s my “expressive luxury;”gorgeous, well-made, luxury bags at sub-$300 prices.

I remember Coach used to be very high quality, perfect stitching which gave even the big luxury brands a run for their money. But when I got older and started working at Nordstrom, I could tell a big difference between 1900's Coach, and mid to late 2000's Coach, and the glue was visible, everything made in China, and leather quality plummeted. I see they're trying to revive themselves, but it's hard to consider them a luxury brand when I dealt with so many returns of their products over the years.

I cannot afford to buy luxury handbags but I have been watching videos of individuals buying new Chanel and LV handbags with seams fraying quickly, Chanel. A wonky zipper, on a new LV Speedy 30.
I agree with your comment that the luxury brand quality is also falling off a bit on new bags.

I worked at Nordstrom for a while-in the handbags dept. most of the “Bridge” bags were overpriced garbage. Tory Burch being the absolute worst! I worked at the KOP store and the Philly mainliner crowd adores TB! They spent a fortune on that garbage!
Same with Michael Kors! Ugh! I could not believe the amount of women buying his horrific bags.
IMHO, the most under appreciated and great quality bags were the leather Longchamp bags! Really beautiful and great quality! I have a few that have worn beautifully through the years!
      You are so spot on!

I am over Coach and have been for years. I bought my first Coach bag in 1982. My closet was full of them in several different styles. They had their own unique style and stood out from the rest. Now they are like everybody else mimicking one another. The one thing the world has lost (especially fashion and entertainment across the board) is originality. Everything is a remake. I don’t want to buy the same thing I bought before (especially when the value and quality is less than the originals)!!!

1980's - 2000's had their Coach Poppy line, less expensive due to the troubled economy. They were bright and more inexpensive, but the quality suffered from their initial business model. Some are junky and being sold at bargsin prices on Ebay. Their materials and design did not age well. People who are only familiar with the Poppy line aren't familiar with the knowledge that Coach returned to real quality luxury leather goods a number of years ago. That's when I began purchasing their bags from a boutique that closed when the pandemic hit. They had become beautiful works of art by then. They were in an affordable price range of various tiers. I feel their look is now suffering again. Some Funky is fun, but some of it will never age well for the price tag. Nor will it be suitable for a broad range of women (or men) whose age will only advance thru years of wanting to enjoy carrying the bag they purvhased. We don't want to toss a wad of money at bags which have designs that will be a "flash in the pan". I get where Coach wants to attract a young generation of customers, but those people will grow up. And Coach should not disregard their older customers. We want quality, style, but don't feel we need to pay big bucks to be billboards for cartoonists and avant-garde fashion designers. Have a line of that stuff and go back to the leather artistry of your bags between 2015 and 2020.

Ahhh Coach! My first Coach bag, a simple, olive green rectangular one, was purchased back in the late 1970’s when I was in my early 20’s, living in Manhattan and working on Wall. Street.
That bag lasted years-through three children and a 20+year marriage.
    It was a workhorse.
Over life’s events and moves the bag was lost and I basically forgot about it.
Then my daughter starred working at a Coach boutique in high school through college. This was during the cheesy “C” years but also when the brand was beginning to produce some nicer bags again.
Off topic here: my daughter LOVED working for Coach. Her manager was great ( still friends), the people working there were great as was the money the store was pulling in.
The location was stellar-directly across from LV so they used to get people who were ignored by LV and would rage-buy a ton of Coach.
The 65% discount and a warning that the outlets had lesser quality bags were also good and good to know.
Fast forward to lockdown. I got bored and purchased some old-school Coach bags from the 60’s and 70’s that needed TLC. The cost? I think $60 was the most I paid with the average being $40.
My collection includes three Willis bags-red; Navy; Brown. Among others. I was thinking of selling some but after seeing your video, I am hanging on to them.
As “luxury “ brands keep raising the price points, vintage is looking mighty more affordable. All it takes is elbow grease and patience to bring the bag back.
Same with LV. I refuse to purchase new. Most of mine come from sellers in Japan and ai send them to the LV repair to gwt Vachetta replacement. Its worth the money and is always less than the price of a new bag.
Don’t get me started with the fake sales-thats a Better Business Bureau report-to!

Part of why I have loved and chosen Coach over the years is that it is a classic and that at least last time I checked they stood behind the product they produced. My all time favorite bag is a Coach, the stitching was starting to fray and I took the bag into the store and it was fixed. If at any time the quality or the service starts to decline I will spend my money on another brand!

Yes the website! Never actually keeps me signed in, sometimes have to refresh the page on a product to get all the pictures to show up, often times all of the available products do not show up when you select a certain category.. so on and so forth.
I’ve really been enjoying @Coach items lately but yes, I noticed how they increase the prices on certain items right before they start a sale. Or they decrease the discount on items that are selling well (ie the pillow tabbies in the reserve) and it’s definitely a turn off. I’d much rather you have straight-forward sale exclusions than act like we didn’t just see you raise the price by 10-20%. We can see you 😅

I was gifted a Coach duffel back in 2013. It came from a high end department store and was very well made and held up for 8 straight years with every day HARD use. I will pay the equivalent amount of the purchase price to have it restored, mostly a brand new lining and touch up on the outside. I will NOT purchase another Coach ever again. One word for their selection GAWDY! Not classic! I am currently SAVING little by little for my LV NEVERFULL GM. Other than those two pieces that will be my entire designer collection. Coach can kiss my A$$! I do not want or need graffiti on a $600 designer bag - but real quality leather, and a classic antique - that’s more my style! I’m sure they will survive without me, just as I will survive without their overpriced, disposable, ugly, new pieces. It is official that we must part ways! Thank you so much for this video! I truly learned a lot! Sad - Coach was a solid competitor in the 1980’s. God bless you! Stay safe! ❤😊

I bought a reloved Coach bag from them this past summer. I love it but it was not in as great condition as they stated nor did it look like it had been thoroughly cleaned up as well as it could have been. I’m going to give it a shampoo myself and condition it, but for 600+ dollars I shouldn’t have to! One reason I bought reloved from them was the cleanliness factor. I assumed it would have been completely sanitized.

This is a A wonderful high level overview of the changes in coach. I have loved coach since I was a preteen and started collecting more coach bags now that my finances will allow. However I I'm very particular about price point and I appreciate your comment about the fake sales. I was An assistant buyer for a major retailer in New York and this is not a new game That Coach is playing. This is basic retail. I agree it's incredibly disrespectful and I appreciate you talking about it and getting The information out there. When I became an assistant buyer I was appalled when I would go on buying trips buying leather goods for penny's and going back to my office and marking it up 4000%. This is one of the reasons I got out of the game.
The key is not to succumb to FOMO. The bag you're looking for is out there if you're willing to do the research and be patient. I am all for luxury but I love having my coin as well. I have watched a particular bag over the last 2 years and I finally jumped on it last week when the price came down 85%. This bag Is in a color that is not neutral and some people will not purchase for that reason however she is gorgeous in my personal opinion and I am now a very proud owner. She's probably on her way to being discontinued and that's why her price was slashed. That's fine with me because she is PERFECT for my needs and I didn't have to eat RAMEN noodles for a year to save up 😅😝🤪.
    Keep up the wonderful work.

Very nice video Autumn, my first COACH bag was given to me in early 2000, it’s the thick soft black leather with the…
“signature white stitching” and classic SILVER COACH BUCKLE. That classic white stitch and buckle…you knew it was a COACH. I HAVE 3 of those and the satchel one of the bags is Baby Blue, that silver hardware, that thick soft baby blue leather…yes, it’s my favorite one and it’s in mint condition, like Allll my COACH bags. But I agree about the change in leather and designs, the CLASSICS of early 90s and 2000s had style, uniqueness in designs and quality. COACH needs to brings those back and do a little less “Signature Canvas” designs, which Michael Korr and LV do. COACH lost the uniqueness they were once known for. Bring back the “Artesian leather” and classic COACH designs…and watch what happens! If it ain’t broke…don’t fix it! Stay classy…Stay “COACH”

Tapestry also owns Kate Spade and several other luxury handbag companies tapestries goal is to make money. All they want is the green, they don’t care about the consumer anymore. This happened about five years ago when Tapestry bought out Coach & Kate spade at the same time, the similarities that started happening between the two lines of bags. At that time they stopped with any kind of real warranty. I used to be a Coach & Kate Spade handbag specialist in a luxury retail store during the time when the buyout happened. They’ve also stopped making Coaches in America and have decreased quality requirements for primary sales. I used to only purchase Coach bags and not sure that I will anymore.

I never said prices were only going up at Coach.

I buy Coach for the designs, and sometimes, like the Cassie, because it’s a good alternative to a more expensive brand. I think Coach has good enough quality to raise prices, but if they do, they will attract a different demographic. They could be entering a range where people may choose a luxury brand for a bit more rather than Coach because of the status. There are people who do buy Coach because of the status. After all, $350 or so for a bag is a lot for someone who may struggle to pay bills. They also need to remember not to alienate those of us who aren’t Gen Z or Millenials.
I like the idea of their reloved program, but they need better designs for the remade and upcrafted items to make them worth it.

9:22 Retail companies have been doing that for YEARS. Learned JCPenney did that in the year 2003. Searching for and purchasing items with 2 or 3 layers of discounts/sale will help a person overcome that betrayal when puchasing.

I couldn't agree with you more. Your analysis is spot on. I was gifted my first Coach purse when I was in 7th grade. It lasted me all the way through high school. I quit buying them in the early 2000's because they were cheap and was gifted another around 2014 and I loved it. They were on a great design streak for several years, offering quality and functionality - for me that means lots of pockets on the outside and simple but beautiful bag designs in a variety of colors. The last one I purchased, the Penny Bag in a rich green, was at Christmas last year. They haven't had any new designs that I've liked this year and I've pretty much given up going to their site. I understand the need to diversify their customer base but I think they flipped the triangle on its head by focusing on a demographic that may not have the income to purchase their products. They should have increased options for their loyal customer base and then funneled down. I have always been loyal to the brand because of the quality and functionality but they have really strayed away from these designs. I too, have noticed their sale trickery and so I'm pretty much done with the brand at this point. Thanks for sharing this deep dive.

I agree, Coach needs to fix their websites! I don't know how many times I tried buying something only for the site to have problems. I wish they'd bring back the Cassie in the regular size. They need more bags in the original gloved tanned leather, especially in medium and large sizes; they have too many smaller ones that aren't big enough. :(

I used to buy Coach in the early 2000s, then I was turned off from the brand for many years. When they brought out the Cassie I started shopping the brand again. I will say it’s a brand I won’t pay full price for, I always wait for items I want to go on sale.
I still have the first bag I ever bought in 2003 and it’s in amazing condition and I used it as my primary bag for years.

Well said Autumn. I own a few Coach bags from the early 2000’s that I paid up for at the Coach boutique, not outlet. They aren’t trendy but are well made and timeless. That’s what Coach means to me. As for the outlets, if they change their discount strategy here, they’re toast.

The new prices are high. Coach make more interesting pieces for Japan and not for USA. Does it make sense? No! The website is slow and does not load well, search bar is useless. Fix the website, Coach! Why not to make decorations pieces for bags? Why not make enough inventory? Why 800 dollars per bag? They might want millennials, but they need to pay rent first. Lucky them if they have 800 dollars to shed on Coach bag.

Made in China can be high quality. It depends on the specs and the costs/prices dictate how much money You can spend on quality. The better Coach bags lasts and are still made in China. The Borough Bag is a perfect example…mine is 7 years in and going strong with heavy use.

I'm normally a silent watcher, but thank you for talking about this. I saw that article the day it was published. I read it and rolled my eyes so hard it hurt. The Gen Zs I know are struggling to find affordable apartments in our current messy economy... so I don't think they're dropping hundreds of dollars on bags that will break down in less than a year.
After I read the article I went to their IG page to see what they were pushing, and it looked like they were selling relationships, not bags.
I will say as a leather restorationist of 10+ years, you are correct, we sell rehabbed bags for significantly less money. And after blowing up some of those images, it doesn't look like they did much for those bags. Maybe one round of leather conditioner, but that's it.

I'm fairly new to buying Coach as I started last year and when I started I binged because I fell in love! I bought 2 bags in one month and another a few months later while purchasing multiple small leather goods to go with my bags. I can't speak on their past, but I am happy with the present. However I do agree with the issue on the website and the fake sales. I'm a newer customer and even I noticed that! I lost a beautiful matching wallet that was supposed to go with a tote that was an artist collab, and was very hot at the time, and I was so depressed for the longest time and it was all because of how slow there website moved at the time. It was so slow it made me wonder if it was the legit website and I almost didn't buy because of it. My mother in law and I were looking at them a few days ago for Black Friday when we noticed the fake sales and were pretty mad about it. Other than that I am the girl that it doesn't take much to satisfy. Growing up I did not have nice things and always saw people with the Coach pieces and thought it was because they had $MONEY$. Now that I can afford it, I am satisfied with what I get and won't buy it if I'm not. I do hope this new thing they're going to start doesn't mean they're going to come out with even more crazy patterns, because sometimes I see the patterns on a nice designed purse and wonder who on earth would buy such a hideous thing and it'd be better if
it was a solid color or floral pattern. Then again I'm young, but an old soul so I don't want dinosaurs on my bag or a color block bag of 5 colors from the crayon box, I'll take a classic monogram or floral bed sheet looking purse any day lol! 😅

Great video, Autumn! I read the same article in Business of Fashion, and I am glad that you broke the article down because you helped me to understand Coach's new business model better. I rediscovered Coach in May after a decade-long hiatus. One of my most recent purchases was an Elise satchel. I saw the satchel in black on the boutique website and decided to add it to my wishlist since it was listed for C$390. The following day, I was on the outlet site and saw an Elise satchel in aqua on sale for C$190 plus a discount of 15%. I bought it straight away, but noticed that the original price mentioned was C$295 and not C$390 as stated on the boutique site. I understand that perhaps they were wanting to clearance the pretty aqua shade, but why original price discrepancy? Is it possible that the original price increased by nearly $100? That's a big mark-up! Anyway, I am now questioning the accuracy of Coach's pricing. If Coach is going to greatly mark-up a product just because it's on the boutique site, even when the same item sells for less at the outlet, then I will just stick to the outlet. Thanks, Autumn!!

There was a major difference from when Coach shoes were made by Jimlar and today. And I did see fluctuations with quality to drive the customer base at the time (the sneaker with leather upper and lining did not do well due to the price.) I did notice the change in image, which is neat. Being I entered the handbag business as well, it this is fascinating.
Since you mentioned accessible luxury, Ralph Lauren has recently done the same thing with the Lauren brand by switching to full grain leather and luxury details. Even the shoes have switched to burnished calf and some are all leather.

I have many Coach bags and I love them, but I don’t think I will ever see a “must have” from them again. The bags I like of theirs are classic and so they still work today. I see things like the pillow tabby and it just seems like a gimmick. I did get caught up spending a lot of money in several coach rogues, those are truly well made bags, but I don’t carry them much because they’re so heavy.

I love the idea of the Coach reloved program as well! I just don't feel like the items are worth their prices. I wrote an entire strategic plan on Coach/Tapestry before the Coach reloved program came out (February 2021.) What I did with mine was made an incentive for Coach customers to bring in their worn luxury items for recycling, get a percentage off coupon for a new bag to encourage new sales. Then Coach crafters would restore or repurpose the bag. I put the pricing comparable to other Coach resellers ($100 - $200 range) to give them a competitive advantage in the luxury market. I feel that Coach customers would rather purchase a restored vintage bag from Coach directly, if it would cost the same as buying it from a third party. Also to Coach/Tapestry, if you read this and think that is a great idea, please give me some credit!
