- Building a deck, bench and privacy fence with lumber chainsawed from redwood logs with an Alaskan Mill. This is the follow-up video to "Turning a tree into lumber using a homemade Alaskan Mill".
Absolutely amazing work from the milling to the completed deck and fence. Lots of hard work there, but it must be very satisfying knowing you created the entire project from scratch using trees from your own property. Very cool.
Very true! Thanks!
A great follow up video form the earlier videos (showing your home built Alaskan Mill ) where you show how to turn trees into usable lumber.
Fantastic work! and very inspiring!
Glad you noticed this as the follow up video and like it...thanks!
This is zen carpentry.
I feel more relaxed after watching it.
I’m glad you mentioned the species, cypress, as my guess would have been Red cedar. That’s a crazy amount of chainsaw milling, but the texture IS so beautiful.
It was nice to see you mention your sight lines between buildings with your walls on your deck.
It’s easy to start getting chopped up when you start adding little outbuildings around your property, and it’s cool to see your process, and how you consider eye movement, as well as structural integrity and beauty. I haven’t looked yet, but I’m hoping you have more videos showing your milling process. I have an Alaskan mill, but have only used it for smaller projects. This was inspiring.
Oh yeah!
I just subscribed, and see it all now.
Thanks!
That deck ended up looking great. Very cool to see from tree to finished project.
Glad that job is finished. Thanks.
The pile of sawdust under the table saw made me chuckle. It has seen some work. Admirable.
You sir, are an inspiration.
Tony Gulish
Thanks for the generous comment!
David, you're awesome.
Beautiful deck David, looks built to last too! Cheers
+waydeewaydee
Hope it lasts at least 25 years. Thanks!
Beautiful deck and fence buddy. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! :-)
I really like that you left the saw cut texture. It works nice aesthetically and it really tells the story of the wood.
Thanks and I like the cut texture too.
This channel should be more popular. I don't get it? Thanks for the free education!
+h82sk8
Thanks for watching.
I am right there with you! I love both of them and am going to binge watch every single video. I came from the sawmill video, and I thank RUclips so much for recommending it to me among the swamp of other videos out there.
David isn’t
David Grot
I do find it amusing that you have a privacy fence out there in the middle of, what appears to be, nowhere. :D
He mentioned his sight lines, and how it helps move the eye from one building to the next. It’s art, man. This guy appreciates the details of aesthetics, but is obviously a crazy skilled/knowledgeable builder.
@@Lucas-pv2wn Sure, but I still found it amusing.
7:35 *Insider secrets... a fountain of knowledge in this man's mind.*
That’s what all of these videos consist of.
Thanks for some informative & entertaining videos. Working with one's own hands on projects like this is something all too few people experience.
Glad you enjoyed it...thanks.
David, very classy deck and fence. Actually, all of the buildings and grounds seen in the videos are well thought out and deliberate. Very inspiring. Great idea with the homemade mill. I've been milling up red oak here in Maine with a 36" alaskan but realize I need a bigger bar for some of the white pine I plan to mill. I think I'll make a custom rig like yours. Great job Julie as well. I enjoy the videos. cheers
Good luck with the white pine and thanks for the positive comment.
I would pay to be this mans sidekick for a summer. Just to be there and help this man with anything he needs done.
To learn everything that he knows.
I wouldn’t just do the work for free. Hell, I would pay to be there.
He is like rain man when it comes to building.
great video, true craftsmanship
Thanks!
I love your uploads. No drama just informative narrative.
Also, do I hear a bit of an Irish brogue from your camerawoman?
+kevocos
Julie is very good at asking the right questions to make the video informative.
Nice build David, Thumbs up.
+OG Timbercraft A lot of work, but must admit I enjoyed the outcome.
Beautiful deck. .....lovely color and texture on that wood. ....great job :-)
+Bosse Grytbakk
Many thanks!
Amazing craftsmanship on your decking...you have given me some ideas on to how i will be doing my front porch and rear decking...would love to see any more of your work on your cottages...Keep up the good work and happy living
Every channel i find on youtube amazes me more than the one i found last time.. superb job sir 👌👌
Great video and very nice craftsmanship on the deck. I learned a few things. Thanks
Hey david, your videos are great and your wealth of knowledge seems endless only comparable to your passion for the trade. I love how your lady partner ask questions and you answer while adding interesting factoids. you guys make a great team. I attempt at making resin table tops and odd furniture end pieces but I live in cincinnati ohio and hard to find good tree species to work with ( for free at least). I wish you had a patreon account where you had courses at a monthly cost and answer questions. Right now Im having a hard time identifying drift wood species. I want to find enough walnut and make a nice canopy bed. The resin and labor time is so expensive it would be well worth whatever you charge for tips
I'm loving watching David do his thing. He's so knowledgeable and humble. Really enjoyable to watch
Yes. I’ve been around carpentry for years. But I have learned just as much while watching all of his videos, as I have for almost half my life.
thank you very much for your wisdom.God bless you.
deck looks great indeed!
Thanks...should last for a good length of time.
Love this thanks for the content
Great job! Proper woodworking!
+zeroy
Thanks!!!
Great work. Very informative. Absolutely love you videos
Wow! So many thanks.
The lady has a lovely voice
I agree!
That man can hammer a nail!
Very nice work sir, very nice indeed.
Thanks!
You're more than welcome, you have a great gift.
would be nice to see some more vids
these are great
Thanks!
Nice job. When I need to take out a warp from a board at the table saw I move the warped board along with a straight edge by the fence. To leave the straight edge fixed it would need to be long enough to accommodate both ends of the warped board while it was being cut.
That works also!
very very nice sir!
Much appreciated...thanks!
Another beautiful video ❤ Keep it, very informational and interesting!
Glad you found the video useful...thanks!
After watching a couple of these, im pretty sure he smashin
The footers for that small deck he is building look real interesting. I wish you would have asked him more about them or would have shown a close up view of those footers.
Is that curly redwood? WOW, thats amazing. I wish i had some for wood turning.
+JunkBeGoneNY
No curly redwood, actually I don't run across much of it in the second growth trees on my place.
Very lovely work Mr David :-)
+Aaron Nicholas
Thanks!
Great work David. Love all the timber and the texture created by the chainsaw. Your attention to detail especially sizing all the timbers for the frames etc just makes the whole job that much better.
I'm surprised the old deck rotted just where the timber crossed the stretchers/joists. Could this have been caused by moisture not being able to easily / quickly dry off and thereby introduce wood rot?
+DRMNZ I would say yes, because the rot is caused by fungus growth and those particular wet conditions are probably perfect.
This is a really neat channel. You have a new subscriber. Thumbs up
Glad you like it, thanks.
Love it all!
+peter smith
Thanks!
Very cool! The area there is beautiful. Where is it you're located? I'd guess somewhere on the northwest coast. Thanks for the info!
Northern California near the coast. Thanks!
I use stainless steel screws which makes it easier to service later on.
Did you treat the wood with a oil or stain later on?
I only treated the wood with a preservative where the wood comes into contact with wood.
Bob the builder, Can you build it ? Bob the builder, Yes I can :)
!!! great!
Thanks!
cool!!!
+Gainscorpio Glad you liked the video!
Beautiful job,,,,, is the Lady single lol.
Hate to disappoint you...she is already taken by me. Thanks!
David Groth I knew it 🙂
maravilloso ¡¡¡ ...
+TheAlmagor Gracias!
+TheAlmagor
Gracias
two years no uploads are you still with us or did you go to chainsaw heaven :(
Is David Clint Eastwood's brother?? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a powerful chainsaw, the most powerful chainsaw in the world, and would cut your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? lol
great videos guys.
Colin Naysmith yeah there’s a bridges of Madison county vibe to this whole ordeal, eh? 💕💕💕
did you build that swing blade mill yet Dave? you make a video of the process as well?
Considering the number of trees I’ll be milling over the next few years I decided it’s worth my time to to buy a 10”auto Turbosawmill. Haven’t used it yet but I have it assembled.
Old school dude still pounding all his nails in.

GAHHH what am I doing with my life
Very cool! O,,,
+Opinionator52 Much appreciated!
Hard graft my friend but the results are fabulous. That woman has a very sexy voice, must be a bit distracting at times. Enjoy your video's David.....regards.....Brian.
Do you ever notice your butt crack burns after sitting on wet redwood?
It is a bit like a guide how to be a man. Can't imagine any gay doing his work.
