I'd just like to mention that i'm a novice fisherman at best. I fished with my dad as a kid, and a little off and on as I grew up. Currently just about to turn 26 and within the past year and a half I have fished more than Iv done my entire life. I am now fully invested in learning how to be a better angler(mostly bass and panfish up here in New Hampshire) iv spent the money on the best lures and rods and bait casters and spinning reels that I could afford, and i'm giving it my all. I have done a vast amount of research and watched countless youtubers and their tutorials, guides and techniques, tips and tricks. I came here after searching "how long should my leader be for bass fishing" and let me tell you for such a simple one way question I figured id get a vague answer 1-5ft. Brian, honestly iv learned more (and by that I mean retained information that I personally will use while fishing) in this 6 minute video than I have in countless other youtube videos. Thank you for going above and beyond with your commentary and detail to the subject. I really appreciate it and i'm sure i'm not alone. Hope you keep these kind of videos going. -Chris C.
I'm in the same boat as you my man. Fished here and there growing up and loved it and then fell off of it until I was 25. Had 1 old baitcaster at the time a 6'10 ugly stick for $30 and a discontinued plafluger 6:2:1 reel. I went heavy into the videos, articles, spending alot of time at different tackleshops and sports shops the past 2 years. Now I have 2 new baitcaster combos for under $180 and 2 spinning for under $170. Its a addicting sport to say the least.
same boat as yall lol. i started buying my first baitcaster n have only had a few rods so far but bought tons of soft plastics, hard baits, a bunch of gear and a nice back pack etc n havent had much time to use any of it since i started buying a few years ago. i just caught my first 2 bass in the same year and have only caught 4 total, my highest weight being 10.6oz. not a lot, i know n it bummed me cuz ive sure seen much bigger ones. its cool tho, as long as im catchin fish im happy being i get to get away from people and into my own little bubble just movin up n down the banks listenin to a book or music on my headphones. its great. have a good one guys, tight lines.
30 years old... fishing for 27... I learned how to properly tie on my mono leads due to your other video. Now I'm learning proper lengths. Dude, thank you.👍
I've watched so many other demos that have been a total fail for me and then I remembered I saved this to my fishing library! Bingo, I'm done in 2 minutes. Many thanks!
Just had my first catch on braid. It's pretty awesome that there's no give in the line. Just a firm pull of the rod and the hooks were set cleanly. Definitely a fan. Also seemed a little easier to get back lash out.
I agree, I've never caught anything on my braid combos but I just realized I'm not using a leader so the fish probably see my braid because I fish pretty clear water. That's why I searched this to learn how to do a leader .
I like that Alberto knot too. Easy to tie, small, and pretty strong. It gets the job done, and I use fluoro leaders a lot here finishing for spots. Great video and some real useful info. Thanks.
Thanks for the great Info big dog.... I'm stepping my fishing game up every time i watch your videos.. can't wait to test everything out.... Much love an respect to u an the family...
Seaguar Tatsu fluorocarbon line runs around $50.00 for 200 yards 12 lb test. Best fluorocarbon line out there but the cost makes your video great for people like me on a budget. Knot it to Power Pro braided line and you are good to go. Great video!
Thanks for the info on this topic. I appreciate your style of presentation. You're one of my favorite pros, and I hope to see you flourish in the coming years.
Thanks for the information!!!!! I will trying floro instead of my usual mono leader. Hopefully make my hook set a bit stronger.. I’ll have to try out that Alberto knot also. Cheers
Thanks for this. I agree with you not having the leader come around the reel because it curls up and sometimes if that knot catches even a little bit it makes a mess.
The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.
On the spinning gear that much, you must have some Canadian in ya. That's a BIG deal up here, thanks for the video with easy explanation. Let's see some more of that boat of yours in 2018!
Brian, really enjoying your channel. Love your presentation style. Everything is explained really well. I too often use a short leader, mostly bc I can use the floating braid as a strike indicator. As far as leader to braid though I like the FG. It's soo slim it doesn't matter if it's in the spool. It's not as easy to tie as the Alberto though, esp out on the water. Good stuff. Thanks.
I would like to see your camper and truck setup you use I am in the process of getting a camper and would like to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks for the videos I really enjoy them
I run 10lb braid to leader on all my spinning applications. Regular size guides on rods that cast alot ie. Small swimbaits, cranks, jerks n blade baits to name a few.
B Lat. I can not thank you enough for what I’ve learned in your videos. I was just wondering if you have a particular color braid that you use or prefer. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Brian do you ever use a leader on a Baitcasting Reel with Braid.?? I feel like I’m missing a lot of Fish with just using monofilament if I’m using a soft plastic. I use braid on my spinning reel with a mono leader and man you feel every little scrape,

What do you use for jigs? Do you go braid to leader or use straight fluoro? I am having a rough time the past two days fishing jigs in rocks. I have to pop the jig out of the rocks to get the good bites, but its also been causing me to break off twice on the hookset. I used 15lb yozuri hybrid as a leader yesterday and broke off once. Today I used 20lb seguar red label and broke off. I am only fishing about an hour or two, and fished the rocks maybe 30 minutes of that duration. I checked the line frequently, and it didn't feel too rough
I'm new to sea fishing and in my ignorance I bought 40lb powerpro braid because that's what I used for fishing pike for almost a decade. Now I'm living by the sea and have turned my attention to lure fishing from the coast. Problem is I was just going to use a wire trace but the guy at the store insists I need to use fluorocarbon. He recommended a 15lb breaking strain that has a 0.3mm diameter. the 40lb braid I already bought has a roughly equal diameter of 0.32mm. I'm being told I should match the breaking strains of the braid and leader, does it really make much of a difference? wouldn't 2 lines of equal diameter make a more secure knot? any help would be greatly appreciated. Don't really want to buy more braid, as the powerpro was expensive.
Thank you, Im coming back to freshwater fishing after decades. Ive got 1 for you, I have a 7'2" G Loomis rod rated 4-8 lb & 1/64th oz - 5/16 oz, lightvpower fast action. I ordered 10 lb power pro braid but not sure what lb test to match for stream & river trout in N. Cal for leader material. I bought some 5 lb & have 6 lb on the way. all my spinners are from size 00 to 1s & only a couple 2s. Its just been so long since I fished the light lines. Any advice? Oh & the reel is a stradich CI4 2500. Thank you in advance. I was also going to use a blood or double uni to join braid/fluoro.
Brian, do you use braid to flouro with your casting rigs? If so, have you found a solution for getting your braid to fc knot to go through micro guides without issues? Thanks for all of the awesome content. You are one of my favorite RUclips guys.
I'm having a serious problem tying fluorocarbon leader to Berkeley tres braids whatever that is, everytime I cinch the knot the FC snaps, it's almost as if as if the braids is cutting through it, because it's not the knot that's slipping it the flouro snapping at the knot I tried keeping it wet while tying it and everything, I search the web and forums and no one seems to be having this issue
Wait can somebody please help me what happens if I'm just running 5inch senkos should I run just fluorocarbon for that or should I be doing this braid combo or just go to mono?? Someone with a lot of experience can they please help
I'm kinda new to this, why do you use long leader like this? I see people use long leaders, short leaders half the spool braid half mono. I can't seem to understand why.
@@BrianLatimerFishing I understand that but what is the difference between a long and short leader? I don't understand the difference tbh. I just learned why they use fleurocarbon and what the difference is between it and mono.

Matching is fine but the leader is typically bigger than the main line
