VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Hi everybody,
On the 28th of February 2024, the streaming market of India witnessed the biggest merger of the decade, this when Disney+Hotstar entered into a joint venture with Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani!!
And the reason why this is a very very big deal because with this merger, Mukesh Ambani has practically become the King of the Indian OTT space because now This entity owns 35% of the entire OTT market of India, 120 television channels, and 30,000 content assets of Disney! In total, this entity alone will command a total viewership of 750 million viewers!
And you know what?? Reliance will practically control 63.16% of the merged entity and Disney owns only 36.84%!! And this is shocking because in 2021, Disney was the king of the Indian OTT space!! Look at this chart, in 2021 Nov, while amazon prime stood at 22.3 million views, netflix stood at 6.1 million views and disney plus Hotstar touched a viewership of 51 million views!! And if you look at Jio, jio was nowhere in 2021, but even then, in just 2 years, it has become the King of the Indian media space.
How did Reliance dethrone Disney as the king of the Indian media space?
What was Mukesh Ambani’s genius business strategy to beat a 100-year-old giant like Disney in India?
Why did Disney lose the war with Jio despite having so much money?
And as students of business, what are the lessons that we need to learn from this epic business case study?

Being a monopoly is good for a company but not for the people.

Mota bhai is visionary, the way he currently is leader in telecom and media. Before 2010 he has zero percent of these markets😯
He is not visionary.. He either copies or acquires the business and kills the competition

Apple is the best example of 'ecosystem profit > standalone product profit'. Jio's going to get there, step by step. What sets Jio and Apple apart is their target demographic for profits; Apple goes for markets of high-paying customers, and also maintains a level of polish/refinement on their products, while Jio shoots for the masses across the lower and middle class families where a product purchased is inexpensive enough that spending capital on polish/refinement isn't necessary. Jio's example is basically collecting the smallest grains of silicon from all around the area, while Apple's example is aiming for areas with large silicon wafers from the get go.
There's a book by the name of "The Fortune at the bottom of the pyramid!
@@anubhavjain7566 Thanks for the suggestion! It's on my reading list now
One of the advantages that JIO has is India and its population...while players like Apple are dominating global,, I doubt that JIO will be able to do that globally.
@@reserftamang7700 They do not need the global stage, they just need to up their product portfolio on the hardware side as well, designing it for the desis out there. With India's population as you've mentioned as the base, they can sustain themselves if they invest into it when the opportunity strikes em ripe and ready. That won't happen in today's market but is a possibility a few years down the line. However, they've to be careful of regulatory bodies when they evolve into that stage as well.
@@reserftamang7700 You can compare that with mindset of Americans. Whatever great things happen in US, it tends to spread across. Secondly Americans have a mindset that they want much more quality products and are not price sensitive whereas in India people ensure they have good value for money product

The probable monopoly of reliance in telecom and media industry is a threat. We will need good and fresh competitors merged to existing players to break this possible monopoly. Not an Ambani hater but i feel this essential for the Indian market.
Completely true! We will be the victims in the end when they own everything and we’ll have to just comply.
ooh so you were happy with a foreigner monopoly then? why indian colonial mindset can't see any Indian to grow at word level
@@dreemfeed8077 did he ever say that he wanted international company monopoly? I swear you guys have 0 comprehension and try to twist every thing as if it’s against india. After seeing the WTF X Think example... I see something is cooking, and as of now it sounds delicious :p
I was wondering about same and that nitin kamath example gave clear idea that he might be a strategic investor in this venture

How many of you want CAA to be explained in this channel
But won't this trigger anti competition laws in India? As a monopoly, what is stopping us go the license raj in a few decades? I don't think this will be allowed by CCI which will bring in Anti-trust laws in India. Especially if Jio tries to wear out Airtel. Because if Jio is the only one surviving in India, guess what, it will get broken up, just like how every move by Google is being scrutinized by CCI.
17:38 Friends is distributed by Warner not NBCU. Also, a really well done analysis and exactly depicting what went wrong with Disney in India, esp with Hotstar. Jio just made them turn into this merger.

@@shreeshbhat3971Monopoly is not good for the market. Especially the domestic market.
@@shreeshbhat3971 not to this extent. When a company owns everything, there is no incentive to grow anymore. The consumers will be the victims. It’s indeed quite dangerous.
Motabhai doesn't even think of maybe creating orginal shows for jio cinema because the app didn't have that much brand value , he straight out bought all the well known content available.
Shows how deep the oil money filled pocket of his is.
Other companies spend money, they incur losses and get acquired but reliance all the while jio shows most expensive sports league in Asia for free.
Bruh what? So what about Hotstar? Sony liv vs zee5

So if jio became monopoly, recharge prices will increase exponentially.
yes there will be a hike soon but comparitavily lower than airtel obv, lol
Not really they would be market player only in entertainment and not in telecom as gov would try its best to revive other if this happens ...and at last we are Indians we wont pay such high bills baselessly ...mass would switch to either airtel or vodafone
Yes it will but i don't think exponentially, jio knows Indian, but i think they will starts selling buddle OTT in less price than other OTT combined which will be good initially, but as per population of India it will remain stable but will increase yearly.
Awesome ❤
