University of California divests from Israel and ends study abroad programs

- Students at the University of California (UC) announced UC's divestment from Israel and the cessation of study abroad programs. This decision followed a pledge signed by over 5,000 UC alumni, withholding donations until UC divests from companies with military and business ties to Israel.
Alumni published an open letter in January urging an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and calling for divestment from Israel, particularly in military investments. This letter was directed at the regents chair and UC president. Organisers of the pledge report that the number of signatures has quadrupled since 22 April, coinciding with the start of encampments at UC Berkeley.
On 26 April, the University of California announced it would not divest from Israel. The office of the president issued the following statement:
"The University of California has consistently opposed calls for boycott against and divestment from Israel. While the University affirms the right of our community members to express diverse viewpoints, a boycott of this sort impinges on the academic freedom of our students and faculty and the unfettered exchange of ideas on our campuses."

For clarity and specificity: This is the University of California Riverside, which is part of the UC system. Well done to these students.
Thank you for the clarification ❤️🩹
Thank you, I was wondering which UC it was. What a great achievement ❤
Meaning, for it to be binding, the other UC branches would have to go along in unanimity, or a simple majority suffice, or will the UC chancellor/president/rector have the final word based upon the board of directors diktat?
It is just local to riverside. And it is only a transparency clause in order to see donations and investments of Riverside specifically. Los Angeles Berkeley and all of UC investments are under the authority of the regents of the university of California.
@@hectorhuerta3331 I think the more important thing to look at, and the bigger reason that this is a win is because it shows a precedent that there are some schools that are willing to do the right thing, thus alienating and pointing out the lack of care or compassion mixed with exposing the rampant geopolitical ignorance and delusion of the schools that don’t(a protest that ended with the result the pro Palestinian protesters intended while being orderly and having no “violence” or “riots” to be seen)
It's big win thanks to students of California University for standing with justice standing with Palestine
fake news i believe so bcoz no other news channel has reported this
On their behalf (I went to University of California at Santa Barbara 25 years ago), they thank you, but they were doin it for Palestine.
Now that we've finished the courtesy, I would like to inform you that I think this news involves only UC Riverside, which has about 35,000 students, many of whom are from immigrant families or are the first in their family to attend college, because it is a less prestigious campus thanothers.
I don't think this affects the entire University of California system, which includes at least 14 cities with UC Campuses, such as the largest one, which is UCLA in Los Angeles, with about 60,000 students, and the oldest location, with 40,000 students, UC Berkley, which is also known as California University. So be careful to remember that UC is not the same as CU, which is not ussd because it would be confused with the 60 city CSU California State Universities system where most of the California students attend. The UC systems is reserved for the top 15% of high school graduates.
My son will go to this university one day, InshaAllah.

The title is misleading. The video difficult to hear at times, painfully loud at other times, there has to be a better recording somewhere. Only the University of California Riverside has agreed to disclose its investment and divest from companies involved in arms sales. It will also end its study abroad program with ISR. This history?
The British Peel Commission recommended a partition of Palestine in 1937 based upon the population transfer of Arabs out of the Jewish State. The Jewish Agency, which was the de-facto Jewish government within the Mandate, rejected the principle.
The "International Post-War Settlement" document issued by the British Labour Party in 1944, stated that the party’s official position was: “…in Palestine surely is a case, on human grounds and to promote a stable settlement, for transfer of population. Let the Arabs be encouraged to move out as the Jews move in. Let them be compensated handsomely for their land and let their settlement elsewhere be carefully organised and generously financed.” The Jewish Agency rejected this idea as well.
The Jewish Agency accepted the terms of the November 1947 UN Partition Plan, which required both the Jewish and Arab States to grant the Arabs in the Jewish State and the Jews in the Arab State full democratic citizenship, as well as the option of remaining in their homes in one State while being citizens of the other. The Arabs rejected this principle. The Jews living in areas designated as part of the Arab State, as well as those in areas designated as part of the Jewish State, came under attack even before the end of 1947.
Shortly after the passage of UN resolution 181 the Arab League had recruited thousands of volunteer soldiers who came from as far away as Serbia, under the banner of the Arab Liberation Army, to infiltrate Palestine and resist the implementation of the UN resolution. In April 1948 the Jewish Agency and the Hagana, the precursor to the IDF, had a very clear mission. They had to ensure a secure and viable Jewish State, and to defend the lives of the Jews within Palestine, as the British forces withdrew. The mission of the ALA, together with the Holy War Army of the Arab Higher Committee, and to some degree the British led Jordanian Arab Legion, was to prevent that from happening. Battles ensued in most Arab villages and neighborhoods between the Hagana and local “defenders”.
The policy was clear. Arab villages and neighborhoods within the Jewish State that demonstrated the willingness to remain within the Jewish State were not to be disturbed. Arab villages and neighborhoods hostile to being included in the Jewish State, would not be included in the Jewish State, but would be escorted to the border of what was supposed to be the Arab State of Palestine. Thanks primarily to the meddling of the Arab League and their ALA, most Arab villages and neighborhoods fell in the latter category.
Israel did not expel the Arabs, it facilitated the voluntary transfer of the Arab population that clearly did not desire to reside within the Jewish State. The Arabs who remained are those who were resigned to the prospect of becoming citizens of the Jewish State. That option was not granted to Jews within the parts of Palestine that fell beyond the 1949 armistice demarcation lines. No Jews remained within the areas of Palestine occupied by Jordan or Egypt. In fact, within a few years of Israel’s creation, no Jews remained in the bulk of the Arab world. There has been a complete ethnic cleansing of Jews from the Arab world which the international community prefers to ignore, while having no problem whatsoever pointing an accusatory finger at Israel for not preventing the flight of the Arab population that rejected being included in the UN mandated Jewish State.
Wonder who is footing the bill for increased tuition fees for everyone then?
Right they are caving to this protest so that within a year they will have a bigger protest over everyone's tuition going up.
The title (not the preview) is misleading. University of California system is a collection of independent universities. Only UC Riverside has divested; others have not and still have encampments.

Allah is the Arabic word for God. You are using it in an English sentence as if it's a proper noun. This helps spread the misinformation that "Allah" is a novel entity brought forth by Muslims, when in reality, it's a word that has been used by Arab Jews and Christians to refer to the one God even before Islam came along and is still used by them today.
Who?
@@meyer7262 Islam explicitly says that It's the same God that Moses and Jesus preached. Where it differs from Christianity is that it considers Jesus as a man whom God inspired to spread his message, and not the son of God, because God is not a human that has offspring.

It is telling that Zahir Muhse’in, member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, said the following in a 1977 interview with the Amsterdam-based newspaper Trouw. “The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people’ to oppose Zionism.”

That being said this is good news but the one that will make big news will be when/if UCLA or UC Berkeley divest.
We have to be careful here. Only Evergreen State in Olympia, WA has agreed to immediately divest. UC Riverside and Brown University are kicking the can down the road into the fall semester.
