- Got out on a windy mid October Day to chase some wild BROOK TROUT in a small stream in the western Catskills. With the wind and leaves it was tough but managed to get a bunch of brookies on dry flies which was nice for so late in the season.

I've been wanting to make a trip to the catskills in the fall. Probably stay in livingston manor and fly fish beaverkill and willowemoc. I'm reading that they shut fishing down october 15th though and that october fishing isn't great. What are your thoughts?
You can still fish its just catch and release. Most streams are open now year round.
It can be really good BUT the brook trout and browns are spawning so it can be touchy.

Is it ethical to fish while they are spawning? I'm still new to trout and I've been hesitant to go during this time of year.
I don't think it would actually affect spawning success but I try to avoid actively spawning fish and any areas of disturbed gravel. Most of these were post spawn from what I could tell. Thanks for the comment/question

We need rain so bad!!! The fish are wanting to run in Ithaca but water is still low. I'm hopeful going to pulaski this weekend.
I know this has been such a long dry stretch...

Dang. I came down to the Catskills this weekend from Ithaca (my primary residence). I haven't seen anything in the cayuga lake trips either. There are usually fish I. 6 mile creek by Halloween
