G'day Fred. Thank you for posting this. Here in Australia on 11 metres as you know we don't use FM. The protocols are AM on Ch 1-15 and Ch 16-40 SSB. The only problem I encounter here in Adelaide is the locals hog Ch 35 LSB and ruin it for the skip chasers by waffling on and on. In Melbourne where I'm from you make a contact on Ch 35 then immediately move to another channel. Not so in Adelaide. The band sadly isn't as enjoyable now as it was in the 80s. I make up for it by listening to shortwave frequencies as there's always something interesting on the lower bands.

Just listening to Dan I think it was saying hes put his antenna higher and talking about an earth. Ive tried many things to get my noise down from a constant 6/8. Its not coming from my house as ive turned off the power and ran from a battery, upgraded to high priced coax, earthed the pole my antenna is on. Put it above my roof line by about a meter or so. Tried a qrm eliminator. Nothing works.Any advice on what else I can try please? My half wave gainmaster has a baulun at the bottom also. I have a 40 channel hand held which doesnt pick up the noise. Is this because its just got a small antenna? I recieve a local contact at +30 on my home base and the same on the hand held so I know its receiving correctly.
You really want to get your aerial as far away from your house and the neighbors as possible. Go hunting with your hand held in AM mode if it has it to narrow down the noise with the signal meter.
I have two 1:1 Baluns one below the aerial and one before the radio as the coax enters the shack. You could also try a low pass filter or band pass filter.
That last guy keying sounds local. I'm from the Netherlands and we also use the 305 (FM and USB), but we never hear you guys. When ever there is skip, it's only the Italians or French, sometimes Scotland.

Yes the most important is to never give them any incentive to carry on. Policing a frequency just creates longer lasting noise. All I ever do is to say UP on SSB or CW if someone forgot the split button.
Interesting.. had a look at the manual. With split you can transmit on one frequency and receive on another. Useful for a busy competition - so strong local stations don't all block out the weak, far away caller. Priority listens to the tuned frequency and every 5 sec it checks a chosen memory (priority channel) for 0.5 sec.
@@paul1962uk On HF I think it's used like how a walkie talkie would TX & RX a repeater. So Half Duplex where you can't listen and talk at the same time. I used to hear two old chaps use Full Duplex on 2M. Or at least I heard one side of it, staying keyed up while talking and replying. He was quiet as if he had a desk mic, so got hissy when I had to turn up the volume with my weak reception. They had a long timeout set and the radio had a distinct timer sound, beep-boop-beep-boop...
On HF split is often used by a busy or rare station to avoid a huge confusing pile up on just one frequency. They transmit on one frequency then they listen on another (actually often on a range eg 5-10 KHz) So tx on 14.200 but listen on 14.205 - 14.210 for example. This spreads out the many stations calling in.
Next time you get interference try turning your noise blanker off for comparison. NB's are for noises like ignition spark generated noises BUT that filter design can and will suck in other sorts of interference. Atmospheric noise isn't ignition noises. Sometimes if the NB lowers noise it's just lowering reception.
