As a professional car painter starting n early 70's. Working with most every type and brand of paint,of course solvent bases this video is extremely valuable and a must watch! As the industry has changed to water based paints, its great to c u put out a solid video with great info. I really appreciate ur time and info as testing many brands gives all those who r wanting to learn the new paints a great variety to choose from. As a custom painter and airbrush artist and model builder for 50 yrs with many best paint awards I would encourage all to watch, learn and practice as u demonstrated. Great job, thanks again. As they say, even this old dog learned new tricks here.😁🙂. Look forward to following u more and changing over from 50 yrs of solvent based paints, especially now that my grandsons r building and wanting to start painting thier own models. K Gee, for urethane based paints I typically use a fast dry urethane reducer. Mid temp or slow dry will have a tendency to attack the plastic. O have also successfully used a fast dry gun washing lacquer thinner, ( my favorite choice when using testers enamels also),though n Cal we can't buy it anymore thank to big gov always shutting down what works. Acetone solvents now r just no where worth mentioning n my opinion, don't work even for cleaning compared to lac thinners. Hope this helps
Another excellent and helpful video, thanks Carsten. Love those Trident paints! I'm very much an 'Air Cap On' kinda guy. I guarantee you that if I wasn't, the first brushstroke would snag the tip, bend the needle and the canvas would very quickly become a square frisbee. Enjoy your long weekend!

Whats the difference between airbrush flow improver and reducer? According to the item descriptions: Reducer - A premium reducer for thinning water-based paint. Allows for decreased drying and curing times as well as improved flow with less tip-dry Flow improver - improve the flow and delay the drying of paint on the needle while airbrushing So the reducer is different in that it also thins water based paints? Wouldn't the flow improver do that anyway?
G'day m8... Im here in Queensland where its hot an humid! Anyway, im not looking to paint free hand pictures, but looking for advice videos to get me the knowledge for my hobby. I build and drive Rc trail/Rock Crawling trucks, and we like to build them to 10th scale. For instance, iv just 3d printed a Toyota Landcruiser 70 Series or LC70 for short, in 5 pieces took 74hrs. So im just looking to paint my Bodys i print, for my 10th scale down to 24th scale. And already my knowledge from this one vid has me looking at distance and amount of media i release when pulling back to get that perfect layer i need, as well as PSI for differant results!..... Cheers ol son for your vids from sunny QLD
Your videos have great content. I’m no artist but I build a lot of aircraft and car models and really just getting back into the hobby and trying to learn the correct the proper way to use the airbrush and mix the paints. Is the reducer the thinner for that paint. That’s another concern there are so many different names used for the same product. Do you use distilled water with the reducer or thinner? Is that an acrylic lacquer based paint? I’m currently using tamiya acrylic paints would I use the same concept with their reducer? Just trying to learn. Thanks for sharing your videos and knowledge Artie 😊
Great informative videos. Love watching and learning so please keep them coming. Also I and some followers would love to see if you have any tips and tricks for correcting mistakes on unfinished art works.
Hi great channel I get spidering and splatter trying to get a small dot with 1:1 at 20 psi. Is paint too thin maybe or pulling back too quickly? Thank you
Thank you glad you enjoy the channel 🙏🏻 generally 1:1 ratio is great to start with and shouldn’t be too thin, you may be pulling back too far on the trigger or you may also have moisture coming through your airline ? Hope that helps 👍🏻
I'm getting regular spidering, I'm very new to Airbrushing. What ratio of paint to thinner would you recommend? I'm using IPA (isopropanol alcohol) and VG (vegetable glycerin) along with bottled water for my thinning agent, 25% IPA, 75% Bottled water and 15 drop's of VG. But I'm getting spidering or the paint travelling under my templates! I've tried to thicken the paint but then I get problems blowing it through my air brushes! Some paints are fine but the majority splatter and spider. Thank you for your video.
Another helpful video. Maybe I missed it, but when would I know I need to use reducer? I'm new, starting with "airbrush-ready" Golden paints, and they seem to work very well in my HP-CS. Does reducer allow you to use a lower PSI?
Hello, Great illustration!! What is the best airbrush (iwata) to use to paint a helmet and or bike tank? In addition, what paint is used for such a project? I hope you can help me with these questions. TY!
Thank you I like using trident airbrush paints as well as Createx illustration colors , they will need to be two pack cleared once you finish your airbrushing . In regards to iwata I like the HPCS for general all round airbrushing at a reasonable price , if price isn’t an issue then the CMC plus micron is fantastic 👍🏻
The link you posted for the dropper bottles are not a clear translucent plastic like the ones you are using in the video. Any idea where I can find the style you are using?
Hi, New to airbrushing. I recently purchased the iwata eclips .35. Also purchased some carbon black acrylic and some shading gray acrylic (transparent) by Golden, don't know if you're familiar with that brand. If so do you recommend thinning it? Also I want to practice doing eyes after learning airbrush control doing dots, lines, dagger strokes and fading using the carbon black. As far as eyes are concerned do you recommend using the shading gray for detail after doing the outline of the eye with carbon black or should I just use one or the other for the whole peice? Most appreciative.
Thanks for your comment and the eclipse is a great choice, I have never used golden so can’t help you there. I assume with the eye you mean in black and grey, I use different strengths of black mixed with transparent base to build my layers and finish with highlights then the strongest black mix for details 👍🏻 hope that helps
is air brush flow improver the same as the thinner? I have been using water to thin my paints but seem to really need to thin it and the color is dull because of that. I do pour painting but like to add to my piece I must confess using the air brush isn't my expertise but I do ok with things like planets and simple things. I want to do more. :) Thanks for your help and tutorials.
Thanks for your comment , I don’t use flow improver I assume it would do the same thing but don’t quote me on that, appreciate the kind words on my vids and take a look at this vid to show you how I mix my paint 👉🏻 ruclips.net/video/iipihxzoZTc/видео.html
Can Mineral Spirits be used as a reducer? For oil based paint like 1 Shot, especially when pinstripping, a lot of people use it as a reducer so I was curious what affordable and easy to find options there were. Also, for cordless (USB charged) airbrushes usually have a fixed and limited pressure rating like 12-14 psi so is there a workaround for those using such machines? Thanks for the video and the info!
I haven't personally used distilled water, I have tested it with regular tap water and it worked fine but I do recommend bottled water as that seems to work best, hope that helps 👍
Nice video, very helpful I use the Eclips HP-CS, what are some fine detail brushes comparable in price to the Eclips. I can't afford $ 500 dollars on a brush. Thanks
Great tutorials. I'm practicing a lot but I'm having the problem that the airbrush throws some small points like dry paint. What can I do to correct this? Thanks I am getting a lot of help with your tutorials.
This vid just popped up. So happy it did Carsten! I've been waiting for some tips on reducing. I absolutely loved your last 3 part tutorial on the skull and flames, AWESOME!!! Keep up the incredible work brother, CHEERS!🤘
Oh, I use mostly heavy bodied paints so they really need thinning for the airbrush. My airbrush has 3 needles,0 .5, 0.2 and 0.3 the last one won't even spray water? Can it be that it was put in upside down from the supplier as it was in the airbrush when I got it.

Hi buddy. great vids. Hope you can advise me here. I've got a new AB kit with Airtank from Amazon. It's budget as far as I can tell. Anyway, I'm a tight arse so I've been trying (and failing) to use my Acrylic Paints in Airbrush, thinning using Water and Isopro 99.9 but I'm forever tip drying or it won't spray, or.....it just doesn't work. Am I wasting my time trying to use my Acrylic paints to AB or can it be done with the right mix? Can I thin with regular paint thinner? i feel like I've got off to a terrible start with not trying proper AB paints.
Thanks for the compliments on my vids and even though it’s possible to use existing paints you will find that dedicated airbrush paints will work so much better, less tip dry and make airbrushing much more enjoyable . If you are in Australia then grab trident paints if outside of Australia then Createx illustration colors are great 👍🏻 hope that helps
i am having an issue what to do if to thin it does not to be to seen to be spraying corectly? the thinner the paint the lower the pressure? maybe like 10 or 15 should i try?
For some one who has never used an airbrush before, what would you recommend for a paint mix ... the 70% thinner and 30% paint mix or what would you suggest?
70/30 is only for super small needle's like his micron airbrush. Every paint is different plus the airbrush used comes into play. 60/40 paint to thinner is a good average for acrylics and 50/50 is the minimum you should thin lacquers.
I’m not a Newby by any means but I find your pressures just a bit high. That said, I have yet to try Createx or Trident paints. I’m currently using Tamiya and MMP paints. I thin at basically the same ratios though!
I'm new but from what I've read, the recommended pressure for models and figurines is somewhere between 20-25psi. 30-40 seems more appropriate for larger projects like bike helmets and prop/costume stuff.
These are from Trident and come in a pack of 10 available from our website if in Australia : www.airbrushasylum.com.au/store/p404/TB-5010_Trident_empty_mixing_bottles_set_of_10.html Or for worldwide shipping via their site : dna-paints.com Hope that helps 👍🏻
Thanks for the helpful vid. I usually make my own reducer - have done so for years at minimal cost. However, I might purchase some of this to compare against my home-brew version.
👍 why you are able to splash intentionally and I always get splashes when trying to do dots? I’m at the very beginning and can’t understand how I go wrong
It comes down to practice you need to make sure you get your paint mix right and only pull back the slightest when attempting dots. Try larger shaded dots first then gradually move closer to your page eventually getting to finer dots it all just comes with practice and mastering the double action control 👍🏻
I don't understand why water is not recommended. If you paint by brush - everybody uses water to thin acrylics, I don't see a problem there with viscosity. It's just marketing. Sure, there may be some ingredients that smoothen or lengthen the drying time, but really, water has been used for decades to thin acrylics... And if I mix my paint with water when I need the color, the shelf live of my mixture is less then 1 day anyway 😉 or use distilled water. other than that, your videos are really helpful!
They are the empty bottle sets by trident they are 50ml and come in a pack of 10 available from us in australia or airshotstencils.com throughout the US.
Why not use a precision digital reloading scale to measure your paint to reducer ratio? You can tare it out to zero each time, and closely track what you are mixing, even if you want to make your own custom color. Those scales a really cheap, up to thousands of dollars. I have a scale I paid $3500.00 us for. It can weigh a feather or one drop from an insulin syringe. Just a thought.
Really enjoying your videos, very informative. Just a quick terminology question. I s reducer the same as thinner? here in the UK model paint manufacturers also make specific thinners to use with their paints and I was wondering if this was the same thing. Such brands would include Tamiya, Vallejo, Ammoby Mig, Lifecolor, Humbrol. Many thanks for your help.
As I understand it "reducer" is just another name for "thinner" - to adjust the viscosity of the paint. Extender slows the drying time of the paint - just a drop or two per cupful. Helps prevent paint buildup on the tip. I'm only just past the beginner stage, so I stand to be corrected.
Hi my name is tony i have a airbrushshop in my home and ive been dealing with my paint and every time i use it some of my paints are too heavy and im trying to thin it down .yes i do have reducer and i kind it use it all what a dumb butt i am. hat type of paint can i use for tshirts and what type of paint can i use transparent, opauqe
These paints are designed to flow better and not comprimise the paints viscosity if thinned with reducer rather than using water which breaks down the pigments and can also create issues if you plan on keeping your left over paint and storing it for more use .
I don’t put primer in airbrush , I use a spray gun for that but then I am talking about automotive primer . Generally , if it’s a ‘milky’ consistency then it should go through fine 👍🏻
Best Airbrush channel on RUclips. Period.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻

@@AirbrushAsylum Oh Wow. Just looked Createx up....Expensive much lol.
Maybe I'll but 2 colours and try a monochrome :D
Old school cheap method is to thin acrylic paint with Windex. Just clean everything with brush cleaner from Lowe's
i am having an issue what to do if to thin it does not to be to seen to be spraying corectly? the thinner the paint the lower the pressure? maybe like 10 or 15 should i try?
Thanks form Holland 👍👍
No probs glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Can you tell me where you get that mixing ball from? 2:50
looks like a marble
Felicitaciones, por ese vídeo..
👍🏻😉
Where did you get those plastic mixing balls from? No rust is a great idea.
These are from Trident and come in a pack of 10 available from our website if in Australia :
www.airbrushasylum.com.au/store/p404/TB-5010_Trident_empty_mixing_bottles_set_of_10.html
Or for worldwide shipping via their site :
dna-paints.com
Hope that helps 👍🏻
Airbrush Asylum thanks I ordered a set.
Why not use marbles!
Bryan why not just buy the trident 10 pack and be done with it!
Thanks for the helpful vid. I usually make my own reducer - have done so for years at minimal cost. However, I might purchase some of this to compare against my home-brew version.
Hello..can i ask a question? Is mr.hobby thinner also a concentrate? Maybe you know..so i can maximize it. Thanks before
I wish I could help but not familiar with that brand reach out to Spraygunner they should be able to help 👍🏻
@@AirbrushAsylum thankyou so much. Appreciate it. Cheers.
Nice! If the paint is water base why not mixi it with water.
If using acrylic, can I mix brands?
Thank you.
No probs glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Chrz Bro.................Owe ya one !!
Hai can we
Camel fluid acrylic color or brustro professional acrylic
Fo plastic models
Where did you get the bottle and marbles?
is reduser the same or semilar to thinner ? or flow improver ?
what are those bottles with the bead in them?
They are the empty bottle sets by trident they are 50ml and come in a pack of 10 available from us in australia or airshotstencils.com throughout the US.
which compressors or can i use a bigger compressor
so all you need to do is thin your paint the right way? i dont have to buy transparent vs opaque paints for airbrushing?
Where do I get Trident paint
Dropping sending my full support hope to see you back thabks idol.
What’s difference between reducer and extender (I use golden paints had was told to get some extender)
What is "Reducer," chemically speaking? Is it alcohol? Oil-based? I'm guessing it's rubbing alcohol.
Ello.. why do u say, don't mix water with the
Paints?
These paints are designed to flow better and not comprimise the paints viscosity if thinned with reducer rather than using water which breaks down the pigments and can also create issues if you plan on keeping your left over paint and storing it for more use .
reduser same with thinner?
Yep pretty much 👍🏻
thanks for advise bro..verry appreciated it
Sería bueno que sus videos tengan subtítulos de apoyó, cómo sugerencia..
👍🏻😉
I’m having probs with primer in a airbrush
I don’t put primer in airbrush , I use a spray gun for that but then I am talking about automotive primer . Generally , if it’s a ‘milky’ consistency then it should go through fine 👍🏻
Airbrush Asylum thanks
