Not that much. Platinum spot price is today is $915 per ounce. I would estimate that the caseback would be between 1 and 2 ounces, as a one ounce coin is about 33 millimeters in diameter. The value of precious metal used in this and other watches costs much less than the actual watch, although platinum is much more difficult to work with than gold or stainless.
Dear Eric, Almost all rotors contain tungsten (sintered metal) full or on the ring (2 parts conception), in order to get more inertia. We call that heavy metal with a density similar to gold, around 18. Steel is only 8,5. It looks like steel but in fact most of the watch mouvement components are rhodium plated. Under you’ll find mostly brass or steel alloys.
@@donsmith3038 The day date. Whilst I have baguettes on Ice blue (which turns more heads i guess, even on Rodeo Drive [baby 🎥]) part of me likes the lume on sticks dial for every day use.
My main gripe with my Panda is I can't see the time with just a quick glance sometimes. My GMT and Sub there's no need to change the angle to see the hands. A Daytona really should be a 42mm. The dial is WAY TOO busy to be so small IMHO.
He's reviewing the Platinum, I saw one in person in St Thomas and it was very legible.. You got the Panda which is white dial with white gold hands. I don't care how big you make it, that is always going to be harder to read. If you wanted easier to read you should have gotten the black dial which would be just as readable as your GMT and Sub because the white hands contrast with the black dial. Enjoy your Panda because it is a beautiful watch. Do you have the new model?
Same thoughts, Eric. When the baguette 126 came out and I saw it had the brown subdials on it, I went on ahead and bought the latest 116 version of the baguette dial. It just had a cleaner look overall. It looked more Icy if you know what I mean. I like how the solid end links line up more with the lugs on the 126 though
@@CaptainAhab-im3kd yes weight is very noticeable even compared to the gold versions. But it is not bothersome and I actually quite like it. Makes the steel versions feel like toys when you switch back.
@@dczero I can feel the weight of the Platinum Bezel even on my steel Yacht-Master. It weighs more than a steel Daytona and that makes it just plain feel sexier. I have only imagined what it must be like when the whole watch is Platinum !! I would surmise therefore that a Platinum watch is surely a level-up even from a gold watch.
Thanks for the great review Eric. Will never see one let alone be in a position the buy one - its an unobtainium. But respect yr channel dude. You were one of the 1st watch youtubers out there. You have stood the test of time thru all the crazy hype, carry on and nonsense in the industry. Respect.
Your landing all the hot Rolex releases and I'm here for it! Appreciate the hard work Eric! I still haven't seen one in person and the 2024 releases are almost here.
Stunning Robustly Beautiful Platinum Rolex Daytona.. Case Exhibition Back Kinda Cool , Something's Definitely Missing , I Agree Eric ' They Could've Done More With The Movement Showcase. 🕊️
Its killer , watch of dreams. I think if your a rolex guy because your into cheeper servicing and robust watches, the platona and platinum daydate 2 are the kings
Great review as always Eric. I think I like the thicker subdial rings on the previous version but I agree on the subtilty of the baguettes dial markers. Very classy.
Congrats on getting one in hand and thanks for sharing your observations (and whoever was able to purchase it). Yes 💯 the brown is a tiny bit different. Brown was my college’s color so I never wanted to see it again. But Rolex did a great job and the non-ice version of that watch is my grail. Movement looks fine - firm follows function and we know that baby will tick for 100 yrs.
I understand the benefit of a precious metal rotor and so a gold rotor makes sense. But then if you are going for an exhibition case back, you need to match the colour of that rotor to the case metal. i.e. it should have been a platinum rotor. As for being decorative, I'm easy, but they could have skeletonised the rolex crown in there.
I think the baguette indices is overkill. If you are wearing a platinum Daytona, no need for diamonds. Also I think they should have made the rotor in platinum, not yellow gold, to keep things consistent.
They went more with the brown like the cactus jack brown because of AP that’s my guess, it’s really pretty… did they ever make a platinum daytona oysterflex?
Being a bit of a smart ass here but from what I understand the gold rotor only comes on the platinum pieces. The rest of the line up still has the steel one (not skeletonized because of the weight). Greetings to sunny Miami!
Look up complimentary colors Eric. Colors that are opposite the color wheel will always compliment each other and blue and brown are complimentary colors of each other.
It’s like looking at the engine in a 454 Chevy that’s been run hard vs a show car painted chromed etc both will command respect and admiration for their craftsmanship yet that Chevy that was run hard will get the nod from real car guys they know what’s there under all that oil and grease.
These are super hard to get for me, damn near impossible as my AD gets only 1 a year. That being said I got my sky sky dweller on jubilee immediately and a panda daytona, this reference is a different story though
Not sure why you say brown is not supposed to work with blue. Brown does work with blue! It’s black which doesn’t work with blue. Have you ever heard that you are not supposed to wear black shoes with a blue suit, but you should go with brown shoes instead? That’s why they make this one with a brown bazel and not black!
A platinum watch with a sapphire crystal casebook... Yeah... You know when they charge you a massive premium for Alcantara trim in a car... ...and Alcantara is actually the relatively cheap material...
I liked the old one more due to the dial. Rolex ruined the Platin Daytona in my opinion. And: I do not like the Glass caseback too. I CANNOT SEE IT WHEN I WEAR. Find the mistake.
I like most things about the new models, but I hate the display case back on a "sports professional" model. I know it makes no sense, afterall it is not really going to be used for sports or anything professional, but I still don't like it.
😅😅😅Seiko also have the see through case back….so many cheap brands also have the same see through case back nothing special about the see through case back😂
Eric this Platona is the same and a different at the same time and I love both models .. I really love to see if Rolex just for experiment will do all line if their products with a clear back case and golden rotor and I bet they all gonna be super popular 🙏🙏🙏also I’m thinking if they will try to change a bezel color like dark blue/ green/ dark grey… just for year and see what gonna happen.. but as always my deepest bow to you for extremely good and very educational video
Too flashy, too loud. And it lacks character. It tried space but lost to Omega. It tried (and still tries) racing but lost to Heuer. So its niche is showoff. I can't wear that. But to me a gold Daytona with diamonds looks great on the wrist of a sexy woman for parties, formal dinners...
The subdial rings are slimmer. Also, somehow the color combination works so well on wrist because they go great with a variety of skin tones. Rolex knocked it out of the park. @rkr_jewelers
Brown and blue is a natural combination....blue suit with brown shoes.
How much did Rolex save putting a sapphire crystal case back instead of a platinum case back?
Quite a lot 😊
Fucking good point that

Difficult to work with when its made by hand not by machine though@@cheemomugdoo799
But I assume the movement is also polished to make it more presentable

I love the brown sub-dials, so baguettes are now something I’d consider.
Much better photos than usual. Good job. I still say, put your red ribbon on your other hand or even take it off, just as you’re filming.
Nice - but still prefer the Platinum 40mm day date Baguette. A perfect watch. The perfect watch.

I’m caught between this and the platinum day date for my final acquisition…and having problems deciding.

Like always Eric, like always, every heavy hitter watch has to be presented by you!!
Baguette marker really makes this watch that much cooler. Coolest and best variation is the old baguette but this one is really cool too.

A 20-30k $ watch that can't show time at a glance...kinda' speaks volumes about the watch industry today 😂
@SpaghettiKillah I agree. That's why it's just a safe queen. It's stays locked up in the safe.
Yup, it’s basically a girl’s watch 42mm as the speedy would be perfect 👌🏽
I have the same 3 watches and have the same issue with Daytona. GMT and Sub are do legible

Maybe it’s just me but I think the new one looks a little slimmer and I love that the old one looked and felt a little bulkier

You're right, you wouldn't think brown & ice blue would look good but somehow it does. I still want a white Panda w/ black bezel.
Rolex made the correct decision with the expedition case back. People what to see & admire the engine under the hood! LFG!!

Is platinum more scratch resistant than gold?
Now that I know I’m off the 5980 rose list, a platinum Daytona or rose skeleton will be my next move. The open back is elegantly unique on the Daytona

Prefer by a good margin the old ref 116, the dial is mich more cooler than the new with the brown subdials 👎
My dream watch, would fit to my blue eyes. But the price is a nightmare....
Instead of a gold rotor, they should have done platinum.
I’d take a Lemans over other dial version, but choose the Lumed Marker dial. Hit me with a reply if you would too.
