    Hehe. I've got every size ever made in 1" plates, from 1.25 all the way up to 100, including the rarer 7.5, 12.5, 15, 35, 40 and 75. They're not all York of course. I've got quite a variety including Reading, Cap, Weider, Ross and other brands. It took me years to find them all but I enjoyed the process. I bought the 100s from Iron Man mag back in the 70s. They don't have any markings on them.

      That’s very cool. I like a variety of plates. I think it’s fun to switch them out from week to week. Thanks so much for commenting!

      @@vintageweightspgh Maybe you can help me in IDing some of my odder plates. Two of my 75s are York but the other two are smaller in diameter and thicker. They have no markings on them. They look like they were just cut from a cylinder and a hole drilled in the center. I've never seen plates like them.
      My 4x40lb plates also have no brand name on them. They say 40 on either side of the center hole and barbell below the center. They have that 1" or so wide, shallow groove near the rims that some plates have. Ever encounter any like that?

      While building my home gym I get unusual brands and recently found 2 pair 10lb standard plates which about an inch of the outside of the plate has a waffle or diamond pattern, anyone have any knowledge on these weights?
      Thanks in advance

      @@burtgayleard4983 Sounds like the plates in the first barbell set I ever bought back in the early 70s. Got them from Joe Weider.

    Don't have any yorks since they are kinda rare here on the west coast, but I enjoy my older pig iron. Plate math is easier, cheaper to get, and space efficient. My current favorites are my chrome weider standard plates, healthways 1.25lb plates, and billard 35's(non-dimple). Interesting how some have upwards of 30mm holes too.

    Another great video. Love this channel. Don’t know if you know. But I would like to know time line for each. And maybe contrast the close letter Yorks with the not so vintage fat letter Yorks from the 90’s onward. Keep ‘em coming. I’m a fan

    • @vintageweightspgh
      @vintageweightspgh  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment. It helps the YT algorithm and all that stuff haha. As for timeline, that’s a great question. In my best opinion, the closer letter were 1980s and onward. I’ve seen USA stamped close letter heavies from 1990s. I know from Strength and Health magazines that the wide letter were around in the 1960s. What I’m curious about and don’t know is the timeline for single sided and A plates. It’d be easy to figure out A plates. I can check my Strength and Health to see the first advertisement with lettering. The single sided might be tougher to nail down.

    Cool Info as usual !! 👍
    Question ! I have ( 2 ) Dan Lurie Brooklyn NY . Standard hole plates
    50lb each. The size is the odd part. 12in diameter 2ins thick .
    Any info you might have would be helpful. Thanks

      Thanks for the comment! Those are commonly called “circus letter” Dan Luries. Other than the Dan Lurie standards with the street address, the circus letter are usually the only other DL standards that are sought after. The big lettering just looks cool even though made overseas. I just got a pair of the 50s myself and they’re so chunky! Haha.

    Awesome video! I know it's a bit off-topic to the current content of this video, but you really know your stuff when it comes to gym gear. So, I'm fixing up this antique weight bench, and I'm stuck trying to figure out the best foam to use. Any advice on what kind of foam I should be looking for? Your help would mean a lot. Thanks!

    • @vintageweightspgh
      @vintageweightspgh  10 месяцев назад

      It’s tough to say without seeing the bench. I’d probably take whatever is left of the original foam to a local craft store like Michael’s and try to find the most similar density and thickness.

    I usually count five gens of “Vintage” York plates, although there are sub gens.
    “A” plates, no cast letters or number. Weight amount stamped into plate.
    Y O R K BAR BELL single sided
    Y O R K BAR BELL double sided A.K.A. Wide letters
    YORK BAR BELL double sided
    YORK BARBELL double sided

      The York Bar Bell and Barbell difference is interesting. I’d thought maybe they came from different foundries or molds by that point, not that one came before the other. I’m not implying you’re incorrect; just what I’d thought. You may be right. Thanks so much for commenting. I’ll look into it! Great stuff.

    • @vintageweightspgh
      @vintageweightspgh  Год назад

      In my experience, it was a bit tougher to find the 12.5s. I’m general, the double sided narrow lettered York standards are about a dollar a pound or less most the time regardless. But yes, the 12.5s were a little rarer.
