I had rusted plates, but used Lime Away toilet bowl cleaner (gel) to remove the rust. It melted the rust right off in minutes and only required a scouring pad to remove the rest. No bath required. Just pour the gel over and let it do all the work.
Interesting. Thanks for the input!
@@fixitFlip sure no problem. there's an actual youtube video of a mechanic brushing over rusted tools with Lime Away. The rust just melts off. Just don't use it on chrome.
@@phenom807 Thanks I'm going to check that out.
There's Naval Jelly, too...but probably more expensive.
I love this. Thank you!!! Will definitely try this 😊
Thanks!!! I literally just snagged some rusty weights from my neighbor. Gonna polish them up and sell them 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great, good luck with it!
Excellent demonstration! Can't wait til spring to do mine!
Thanks. It's a satisfying project, that's for sure.
wanted to do this for my little brothers before they come home from school. thank you for this video!
No problem. Glad I could help.
Thanks for this video. I'm restoring my old weight plates, dumbbells and barbell using this method.
No problem, good luck with the project.
Great video. Just picked up 100 lbs of rusty plates for $5 at an estate sale. Going to do what you did. Thumbs up.
Thanks. Great find you got there! Good luck with the project.
That's insane price!
I have 420+lbs of random plates with a bench and a cheap little barbell and adjustable dumbbells bars for 200$ I picked it all up today. Now I have to get all of it cleaned up 😔
@@fixitFlip Got them all cleaned up like you did. My mom thought I had bought new plates, bc she saw how they looked before. Only down side of the plates are they have a 1 inch hole and my normal plates have a 2 inch hole. I still use them for various exercises though. Went ahead and did some bench vice with the same process and it came out good also.
@@NightThings99 Glad they came out nice!
Man I really appreciate your video!! I wish I would’ve watched this yesterday because I literally used an old grill brushed and cleaned up like 16 plates.. it took forever!! And it didn’t work that well either. Ima go to Home Depot and get a wire wheel set for my drill. Thanks bro 🙏🙌
Glad I could help brotha!
This is the second video I've watched on doing this, the first one was the overnight vinegar method....man I'm glad I decided to watch a second video
Ha ha, yeah, I don't have time for all that mess.
Agreed!!
But when you paint it like he said, it will take 2 days
Citric Acid Powder is more user friendly than vinegar in a rust removal bath. It is cheap, easy to use, smells like oranges, and It can be dumped it in the grass afterwards.
The wire brush method works well. The bath would be efficient with a set of plates
Thanks for the input!
Wow!!
Super job
Excellent explanation
Really appreciated your video
Thanks so much!!
💪💪💪
Thank you and glad I could help!
Quite the transformation! Great video. Thanks ☯️
No problem! Thanks for stopping by!
I have just done this work today. Liked the final result.
It's a satisfying project for sure.
Bro blowing my mind good video sir👏🇲🇽

Thank you sir!
great video ! thx for sharing
Thanks and no problem.
Thanks for the tutorial! You have a new subscriber.
No problem and welcome aboard!
Great video; just an extra idea hear Im think of wrapping some sandpaper around a dowel and using the drill to clean up the inside hole as well
Good idea 👍🏻
What a helpful video man
Glad I could help.
Looking good!!
Thanks!
Super helpful video!
Glad it helped!
❤🔥🔥🔥 just got free rusty set today. Perfect video thanks
No problem. Have fun with the project!
Man, you’re awesome! Thanks!
Ha ha, no problem!
Thank you appreciate it. Just subscribed. Aiming to try this hopefully before 2024
No problem and thanks for subscribing. Good luck with the project. It’s a fun one.
Wow excellent.
Thank you!
for anyone wanting to do tthis dont paint the weights on cardboard , this mainly applies to you if you didnt remove all the previous paint basically buffing because it will peel off when you flip them over
so what do you spray them on then ?
@@nicki322buy some clear plastic or on a tarp
Wow Thay look amazing like brand new.and the details with a sharpie really pops out.👍
Thanks! Its a fun project!
very helpful video, thanks so much for posting it! One thing, though: I've recently done the same and I see that new paint gets chipped easily, for instance on the edges of the hole, where it hits the barbell. Is this expected or is it due to poor quality paint? I even applied two layers of paint... :-/
A little paint chipping is normal over time. Spray paint just isn't as durable as the original powder coating. But it shouldn't be chipping a ton that quickly. Hmmm. What brand paint did you use?
Oil based paint works wonder. But powder coat is legit. Just not budget friendly or real practical unless you have a seperate oven to activate the powder
Holy hell the difference is incredible.
Thanks.
Thank you for the video
No problem.
Great video. I have weight I just picked up for free which I will do this to
Thanks. It's a fun little project!
Nice.😊
Thanks! Just checked out your channel. Awesome stuff!
Thanks!!!! 👍🏼👏🏼
No problem!
great video
Thank you.
Gonna start mine tomorrow
Good luck with it. Fun project.
@@fixitFlip I went and bought a set of wire wheels and tbh that's the slowest part but still faster than any other method
@@oculusturtle Agreed. Hope it went well for ya.
Question, my dumbbells look just like yours except that weights are like black rubber and the handles are chrome looking. The issue with mine is that the handles are rusted. How do you suggest I handle these?
You can take the rust off with a wire brush or wheel like in the video or soak a paper towel in vinegar/water and wrap it around the handle and let it soak for a while before scrubbing to help loosen it up.
Can this work on the bar as well?
You can take the rust off like this, yes. But most people don't paint the bar.
@@fixitFlipthank you sir 👍🏽💪🏽
@@JeimyG08 No problem!
Loved it thx
No problem.
Hello, can I use an anti-rust spray instead of the color spray?
You could just use a rustoleum type spray. Personally I would do a coat over it with regular spray paint but you could leave it like that.
Nice
Thanks.
Wow! They do look great!
Thank you!
Brand new iron 🙌🏿
Yes sir!
good work ;)
Thank u 👍🏻
I just bought a York set brand new and already looking at these 🤣 because the paint was chipped in a few small places and one weight somehow had quite a lot of rust on the corner 🤔 idk how that happened lol.
I kind of want to go over them with spray paint but I'd want an exact match and wouldnt know. Plus I'm not sure if it'll be pointless if this paint will just come off with time or itll rust anyway. Looking at second hand iron weights, they're almost always rusty, but surely not everyone leaves them outside or something? Mine will be inside on a carpet most the time.
I went with the Rustoleum black satin paint and primer. It's not an exact match to the original york plates I have but it's very close. Whatever paint york uses it's definetely tougher.
For now rustoleum seems to work with 1 coat and I wont be too bothered by paint chips in the future. Id rather have some scuffs and paint chips than use a rusty plate with old paint thats turning into goo.
Do u need to repaint them?
I have not needed to yet!
Thank you, I’ll let my husband do it 😁
That's an efficient way to get it done. Sometimes, lol
How long would a 20kg plate take to remove rust?
Depending on how bad it is, around 1-2 minutes.
@@fixitFlip Thank you.
@@tommyharris5817 No prob.
How many pens did you need to complete the project?
Just the one.
Paint doesn't go on your hands when gripping the dumbell? I am planning on doing this on an EZ curl bar.
Nope, not to me at least!
My guy sweats a lot and currently the garage floor gets left with all rusty brown mess after certain exercises. Do you think the paint would do the same thing if they get wet from sweat?
@@melissaruiz7890 I think the paint would cause less of a mess than the rust!
@@melissaruiz7890 most rust protectant paints shouldn't rub off. If you are still concerned then maybe get a higher quality paint
does the weight not decrease?
I would say it probably goes down a tiny fraction but then the spray paint balances it back out a bit.
@@fixitFlip ok thanks 👌😁
How did you clean inside the hole where the barbell or weight pin goes through?
Not as good as I should have, but to do it correctly you would need a pipe cleaner style wire brush.
Bro….the paint pen was genius.
Ha ha, thanks!
Sick
Thanks
I have rusted old weights and now I'm like "why"
Ha ha, not for long.
1:13 Irony: Avoiding getting a work out while restoring work out weights.
More of the time consuming part than anything. If you want to use a wire brush, more the power to you.
Ospho eats the paint and allows you to paint right ofter it dries
Never heard of it.
Why don't you write what paint you used ?
I showed it at the 4:12 mark? Rust-oleum 2x paint and primer?
Utlize OSFO to remove rust...
Don’t know what that is.
OSPHO....RUST REMOVER AND INHIBITOR.
@@fixitFlip OSPHO...RUST REMOVER AND INHIBITOR.
Those weights are expensive AF now!
No kidding! I got them for the right price. Free at the curb.
@@fixitFlip A lot of people collect weight plates. Never heard of that brand.
wont use a wire brush because its too much of a workout lmao
Ha ha....
Yikes! Gotta be an Easier Way
You can go the vinegar soaking route if you want less labor, but more of a mess.
Wouldn't it be better to use a copper wire wheel? A steel brush will scratch the steel I believe.
I’ve never used a copper one. Used this method many times, though.
he spray painted it so i dont think you'll really notice the small scratches
@@wtfNOPE Yep.
@@wtfNOPE also small scratches makes a good key for the paint to bond
Just dump all the rusty metal in a bucket and pour vinegar and let it sit for 24 hours. All the rust will be done, then paint. No need to waist time with the drill lol. cave man
How is the texture after painting them ? Do they feel any different in your hand ?
I would say yes, they feel a little different. About how you would expect spray paint to feel I guess.
Well done. My fault for not finding this video before dropping 80 poinds worth of weight in vinegar that just made the process longer and more expensive. 😅
Lol, yeah I don't have time for all that mess. Just blast the rust off.
if u know a mechanic or fabby ask to borrow his sandblaster :)
Yep, my dad is a machinist.
theyd prob sell for like 60 USD on marketplace ,especially if u gave them a lacquer
Oh, no doubt about that.
