For those wondering about my somewhat perplexed expression, it’s because I thought he was singing the words “ Sieg Heil” and for obvious reasons that confused me 🤪
If you want a longer Doors song check out "The End". Not only is it longer, it will probably shock you a bit. My favorite Doors song is "Riders On The Storm" which you should listen to with headphones on, the lights and eyes closed. It will take you on a voyage to a different place.
Diane has already featured _Riders on the Storm_ in a previous video. Scroll back through the list to find it. It was her first exposure to The Doors, and she was very surprised at how chill it was. She expected something more of a rocker.

Diane, not only would the review of "The End" be good, since you have degrees in film, you should make sure to view APOCALYPSE NOW, if you haven't already. Lots of pop music of the 60's featured there. "The End" is an essential component of the film. Studying lots more in music could make your approach to film stronger.

Didn't realize it wasn't a big hit for 25 years after it was released. Minor correction with Wikipedia (or wherever the info came from), but Doors of Perception was nonfiction, not a novel
The first track on their first album. Just imagine listening to this explode unexpectedly from your turntable. A fine introduction to one of the all-time great debut albums.
if you want to watch a Doors song accompanied by a video, pull up "The Unknown Soldier" on RUclips. It's an anti-Vietnam song. Equally depressing is that Jim Morrison was dead soon after the video was filmed - which is fitting watching the end of the video and his bandmates are walking up the beach without him.
Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) was black, and originally from Seattle, Washington, but did most of his best known work in England. Sir George Ivan Morrison was born August 13, 1945 in Belfast.
Happy Wednesday to you Lady Diane! I'm glad that you have chosen to react to a lot of the music by The Doors, because they are just awesome! Here in the US, in the days of AM radio, songs clocked in at 3 minutes or less (all but one of the songs on the Beatles album "Revolver" was in the 2-3 minute range) Billy Joel's song "The Entertainer" includes the line 'It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long, so they cut it down to 3:05" Radio edits were common...but once FM radio became popular, all best were off!
These songs were written for AM radio play back in the day which meant they were two to three minutes tops. You can find two versions of Light My Fire, one shortened for AM radio play and then the full length album version.
I don't listen to the radio, but I like listening to hour long mixes. If there is a single song on Spotify and I don't know it or not in love with it or even a part of a song I'm not a fan of, I'll skip the song, but when it is an hour long mix I'll persist through a song I don't love to hear the rest of the mix. I like listening to music on vinyl because of the inconvenience of skipping a song so I'll listen to the whole side. I've found some songs I didn't know that I loved after listening to them a few times on a side of a record.
At 0:14 Top of the Pops is a good show that has showcased alot of good artist singing live and enjoyable. I didn't know there was a top of the pops 2 that's interesting.
It was common to have radio rotation versions and extended play versions, sometimes short versions were just edited long play, sometimes they were completely different recordings.
@Diane the 1991 movie "The Doors" features Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison and includes a crazy/chaotic scene of this song being performed live in concert.
"Break on through to the other side" is an invite to explore the other side of yourself, the part that has no boundaries, the zone that is free from the shackles that society imposes on us. It's a place beyond a door, the door of perception, the door that separates us from infinite. Jim Morrison was quite a peculiar guy.
At 4:44 I do know what You mean about it sounding beachy like party music that makes You want to dance, eat, drink, and dance. Alot of the 50's and 60's movies filmed at the beach have alot of dance music vibes sound to it.
At 3:15 since Jim Morrison sings Everybody Loves My Baby before Singing She get High. Looked up the lyrics. I always thought He was saying Shake it like She was Dancing on Stage to Entertain the Audience. It was the 60s though. This version sounded clearer than the version I've listened to on the Best of the Doors Album.
In the 60's, All cars only had AM radio that was mono. FM stereo started to get introduced into cars in the very early 70's, so before then, short mono songs translated best on AM radio. This song was off their first album. My personal favorites are off their second to last album, the Soft Parade.

Another reason that songs were shorter back then was that they had to be so that they could fit on 7, 45 RPM records that had only one song on each side. They were very popular back in the day because they were much cheaper than full albums.
Happy Wednesday to you Diane. If you haven’t listened to the song called In-A Gadda Da-vidda by Iron Butterfly, you should check it out, it is from the 1960s too. It is over 17 minutes long and was very influential on what became known as heavy metal. Rumor has it the name was supposed to be called In the Garden of Eden, but the title was supposedly misheard because the singer was high and slurred the words.

The Doors were originally from California. The bands that came out of California at this time had that sound. This would also include acts like The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean as well as other surfing themed groups.
Long songs were started in 67 which had to have the new FM Rock stations to reach the masses. Another phrase is Album Rock. With the Doors you should start with the first album and start your trip. For sure the greatest period in history to be young.
The Doors were a very "Theatrical" act in their concerts , but that side of Morrison also comes through in his lyrics . With your acting / theatrical background , I can see why you are attracted to them . But then , Morrison always did have a way with the ladies 🙂
Radio stations wanted song ti be between 2 & 3 minutes, so they could fit in more advertising breaks. It's the way radio broadcast was structured in those days. Most music artists wanted their songs longer, but they had to make a living. Much later, after years of experience & study, broadcasters changed, where longer songs were allowed.

Thanks Diane! I was thinking during the song that it sounded like a psychedelic 60’s song. So I guess a 1967 release date explains that! It reminded me of my dad’s older sister who was a full on hippy back in the day with every stereotype that name suggests. It was definitely a different sort of time back then.
While it was important for a band to have at least one track of an album to get airplay on broadcast radio, the bands of that time weren't as concerned about such things as the record companies who published their music. The Doors did release a number of successful radio singles, but the singles were sometimes cut-down album tracks. In 1967, F.M. radio wasn't a thing, so all stereo album tracks had to be remixed as monaural recordings for A.M. radio. The album tracks were always better, and sometimes longer. Their debut album is one of the greatest of all time. Dark, brooding, poetic, mysterious. Wish they had kept that sound throughout their career.
To have singles played on radio, they had to be short enough to fit on a 45rpm record for sale to the public.
Yes. About 3 minutes is the max. You CAN fit more time on a 45' with compression, but the quality tanks REAL QUICK.
Also, the 3 minute "rule" fit in better with the Top 40 format.
Love to see your reaction to "The End"
“When the Music’s Over” is odd and fun.
That's their best one, in my opinion. Personifying music as a demon that possesses you. The weird double tracked guitar solo. Just an excellent song.
The soft parade or celebration of the lizard
Tumble down the rabbit hole and go through their work.
The one thing you have to admit…no band before and no band since have ever sounded like The Doors…such an original sound
Thanks for reacting to it Diane!

The Doors is an interesting band to discover. Poetry and stories combined with really cool music.
